Sedate and sporty in one

“Oh no! I said out loud. “I’ve broken it!” “How do I get this car to start?” I’d just enjoyed a ﬁve-minute drive and decided to pull over and take a closer look at the body lines and the interior of the Kia Niro Hybrid SUV. “It’s quite a sweet ride,” I thought. Just something about the Kia Niro made me think ‘this might just be the perfect round town SUV’. It’s got friendly on-road manners and it’s cheap to run. It’s a hybrid – part petrol, part electric. “What’s not to like?” It was time to get driving again and see what a hybrid SUV could really do. Okay. Turn the key and let’s get going. Errrr… nothing. Silence. No engine noise at idle. All quiet. Turn the key again. Still nothing. Okay, think about it…“It’s broken Max. “You’ve broken your ﬁrst hybrid review SUV.” Then it suddenly dawned on me.

This is a Kia Hybrid. This SUV is part electric. What happens if you push the accelerator after the silent start? Bingo! Power to the people and power to the wheels. I was saved! My short true story reveals something about driving a hybrid car. It takes a slight adjustment to get used to the different way they work. But hybrid SUVs are going to be the game changer. I was about to ﬁnd out why.

SUV, except the petrol engine specs don’t really tell the whole story. The Kia Hybrid is a 1.6L, 6-speed crossover SUV, with the electric motor adding 32kW of power and 170nM of torque. Simply, the Kia Niro is a very stable and somewhat sedate, leisurely drive. It’s not going to get anyone over excited about its neck-snapping push or fun to drive SUV personality. Or will it?

Sounds of silence spark to life

After my silent start, the fun began with a very predictable and easy-going SUV round Tauranga drive. There isn’t a switch to turn on the electric side of life, but you know you’re looking at a new way of driving from the ﬁrst sight of the 3D-type dials in the Kia Niro. It doesn’t look like a normal speedo/rev counter cluster. In plain sight is a gauge showing the readout of the average kilometre per litre alongside indicators showing when the car is charging and when it is using the electric motor. That new-look dial will turn most drivers petrol-conscious as the constant average read-out is showing how much petrol the car is consuming, while also Petrol ybrid FWD H conﬁrming the on-board batteries l o L Petr Engine: 1.6 04KW@5700 rpm are charging. SPECS

Part-way through my drive I slipped the transmission lever to the right with a ‘solid clunk’, engaging manual sports mode and suddenly the sport logo came on screen and the car knew immediately what to do – get up and boogie. This wasn’t some minor squint-till-you-think you notice the difference – this is a sports pocket rocket SUV compared to the safe and sedate drive seconds earlier in standard mode. In sport mode, it’s snappier, more responsive and quick and it’s no exaggeration to claim this SUV is two SUV personalities in one. The sport mode is so markedly different, the Kia Niro will appeal to two quite different driver styles. One sedate, the other quite assertive. Put it down to the electric motor and petrol engine working together to give the Niro that boost in on-road performance. It’s snappy all right! Alongside the two driver modes the Niro EX has an impressive array of safety features including: Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, High Beam Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Trafﬁc Alert and height adjustment on both front seats. The upgraded LTD model also includes Keyless Start, Blind Spot Detection with Lane Keep Assist, leather interior with heated seats

and electric driver’s seat along with privacy glass and rain-sensing wipers. Also included is a range of entertainment options with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a 7” touch-screen with reversing camera and 6-speaker audio system with voice recognition.

A story of nuts and volts

I left the Kia Niro behind thinking this is where the automotive world is headed. Hybrid cars/SUVs/vans and electric cars will become the norm. They offer the same driving on-road demeanour as traditional petrol cars with the big bonus of economic driving with less fuel consumption. That is a very compelling selling point. Kia has built a great-looking, very responsive and safe hybrid crossover in the Niro. It is a compact urban crossover that is really is two SUVs in one chassis – one sporting, one standard. And it does it all in a great-looking crossover ride with low gas mileage. The aftertaste of the Kia Niro is one that excites and intrigues. It is an SUV that will appeal to the calm, safe driver in the home, while there is a sporty ride at the switch of a transmission shifter that will genuinely excite and get sparks flying. It will change a driver’s appreciation of running costs and may also alter their driving style along with it. The Kia Niro is a ride designed for those drivers who have had enough of high petrol costs and want an SUV with safety features, reliable service back-up (five years) and with few obvious compromises. Kia ticks all the boxes and does it in style. It’s a great looker, it rides superbly and it’s the future. Just remember to try that sport mode. Sparks will fly! Max Christoffersen
