March 9-10: The Gathering, Taylors Mistake Reserve, Whitianga

A Harley Davidson-only event. If you missed out on registering, or just want to check out the bikes, this is for you. The riders gather for the Harley bike show at Taylors Mistake Reserve, Albert Avenue at 9.30am on Saturday, March 10 with the group ride leaving at 11.30am. The Whitianga Sea Scouts are running a bike wash and sausage sizzle, and there will be food, craft stalls and live music in the reserve from 2-6pm on Friday, March 9, and 9am-6pm on Saturday, March 10.

March 10: Z Club NZ Taupo Track Day 2018, Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, Taupo As much track time as you can handle with driver training in the morning for those who want it. Established in 1981, Z Club NZ is the home for Nissan/Datsun Fairlady Z series GT cars, encompassing the 240Z, 260Z, 280Z/ZX, 300ZX, 350Z and 370Z. Suzuki’s sporty upgrade

It’s the leaner, meaner, swifter Suzuki Swift.You can’t have missed the ads for the new Suzuki Swift Sport. It’s yellow, it’s quick, it’s drifting across wet tarmac, and all in cartoon-style. The new yellow sporty Swift is everywhere. The new adverts are online, in print, on TV and in action on LCD screens at your Suzuki dealer. The new sport Swift 2018 model is everywhere. And so it should be. Suzuki is right to pump its new-look sporty version. The Swift is a hit. The Swift is the Ed Sheeran of small four-door hatch cars. It is the one that you see everywhere and it’s popular because it does so much, so well. It just works. And I should know. I drive one daily. The Suzuki Swift is the car of choice in my garage and it has proven itself to be an adept performer around town and on the road. It‘s nimble, easy to park, comfortable and cheap to run and even on long trips is

great for at-the-speed-limit highway driving. At the time of writing, I’ve just returned from a three-day drive to the Hawke’s Bay and back. My Swift never skipped a beat, tackling those hills and the long empty straights with ease. There was only one catch. I had driven the new leaner, meaner, swifter yellow Suzuki Swift Sport a few days before. And damn, on those open Hawke’s Bay highways I would have liked that new yellow turbo-charged Swift to play with. Because the new Suzuki Sport Swift is exactly as the adverts say it is. It’s Swift alright!

The black sections of the bumpers are ﬁnished in loo -a-li e carbon ﬁbre, while the rear door handles are located in the door pillar, giving the Swift a clean-line, two-door appearance from a distance. The new Suzuki Swift Sport comes in a range of colours, including the now familiar yellow, alongside red, blue, black, silver and white. Some personal driver customisation allows colour insert trims to be chosen across the dashboard, armrests and the centre console.

From the moment you’re in the Swift Sport’s snug sport bucket seats and push the throttle, there is push-back that says, ‘whoa this isn’t like the non-turbo Swift’. Those ultra-comfy black bucket seats are edged with red stitching that adds a quality touch to the overall interior ﬁt and ﬁnish. The interior is also equipped with a seveninch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink, climate control, reversing camera, and radio and navigation systems required to provide the assorted driver assistance. The screen is all touch-screen with no manual volume or selection controls. The new Swift Sport comes with two-tone 17-inch alloys and a more assertive front grill. Suzuki’s new under-spoilers are included alongside a new roof spoiler and a pair of exhaust tips that provide the all-round

The new Swift has some get-up and go that will shove drivers back in those comfy seats while they admire the new interior trim and beautiful gauge set as they easily accelerate past the other heavier non-turbo hatches in the next lane. Put it all down to the reduced weight (down by 80kg) with a newly re-designed chassis and the addition of the Suzuki Vitara 1.4L (138HP) turbo ‘boosterjet’ engine coupled to the 6-speed transmission. This model also features Adaptive Cruise Control and Auto High Beam Control. All the technical elements combine to give the Swift the right to call itself a Swift Sport. Purists may debate the use of the sports tag, but the Swift Sport is a quick hatch and it provides the right balance between outright pace and responsiveness to driver controls. The Swift Sport is not just quick and sporty, it’s safe too. Suzuki has added forward detection system, lane departure warning, dual sensor brake support, weaving alert and Electronic Stability Programme to aid in

traction control when cornering. And it feels like it. My own Swift always feels road-steady with few quibbles or odd driver quirks. The new Sport is the same, despite it being faster off the mark and more likely to put some ‘Gs’ into hard cornering than the stock Swift. The side seat supports are there to keep you in the cockpit and later on, it would become clear this is just a small change but it says much about the personality of the new peppy Swift. There is enough power on tap to throw the Swift around tight corners while drivers enjoy the grip and the snappy transmission paddles with ﬁrm steering.

To buy or not to buy?

This Suzuki Swift Sport will be an ongoing, ever-evolving work in progress. This is an established, popular hatchback platform that has been proven in various different styles. It’s popular because it is stable, with great road manners and it is a solid, dependable platform on which to plan and build future reﬁnements. For the driver who wants the reliability, stability and simple fun a Swift provides, the Sport version does all that and more. It is just as the ads say. The Suzuki Swift Sport hits all the key priority buttons. It’s quick off the mark, stable, road-friendly, safe, reliable, comfortable and responsive. This is the hot hatch the Swift has always wanted to be. As a Swift owner, it is easy to say I’ve seen my driving future. I’ll be a Swift owner for life. My next car will be the Suzuki Swift Sport. Kiwis call for tougher penalties for at-fault drivers

A Canstar Blue survey shows that 45 per cent of Kiwis would back harsher punishments for at-fault drivers, with a further 32 per cent calling for regular minimum standards tests to be introduced. As of March 1, there have been 64 fatalities on New Zealand’s roads in 2018. “No matter which way you look at it, per capita or per vehicle, New Zealand has one of the highest rates of road death in the OECD,” says Canstar Blue spokesperson Emma Quantrill. “For many, the current maximum sentence of ﬁve years imprisonment and/or a maximum ﬁne of $20,000 is simply not enough.”

Mercury has used leading Kiwi ingenuity to change a gas-guzzling 1957 Ford Fairlane to plug-in electric, creating a vehicle destined to be a poster-child for electric vehicles. “This car is the true embodiment of energy freedom, and a symbol of our escape from fossil fuel reliance. To have everyone enjoying emission-free vehicles would be wonderful for our country,” said Mercury chief executive Fraser Whineray. At the equivalent of 30 cents a litre compared with petrol, and delivering 2000kg of annual reductions in carbon emissions, households can halve their energy costs and signiﬁcantly reduce their environmental impact by having an EV, says Fraser. The bigger challenge was getting emotional buy-in. “EVs have always been an easy decision for the head. They’re a practical, economical, clean and quiet alternative to fossil-fuel powered cars. Now it’s time to capture people’s hearts.

“Converting a classic like this is the perfect way to get people to see how wonderful EVs are. We’ve kept the original beauty of the car and added a newer, cleaner engine that’s strong and powerful but just happens to run on electricity. It’s given the car a new lease on life.” Fraser says the company would use the car to continue to showcase the opportunity New Zealand has with renewable electricity powering our transport. “We’ve been showing Kiwis how much fun electric bikes can be, now we want to do the same with EVs. Mercury called on home-grown experts based in Dunedin, Hamilton and Auckland to manage the conversion of the car, christened ‘Evie’. “This is Kiwi ingenuity at its ﬁnest, drawing on our own pool of talent to come together on this project to deliver some ‘world ﬁrst’ innovations. It’s a labour of love, and we hope it’s going to help Kiwis get as excited about EVs as we are,” says Fraser. Evie will feature in a series of ads and billboards, and social media, telling the story of living life to the full with an EV.
