Kia’s honest to goodness

sports monster

Looking at Kia’s Stinger, you wonder if its at Kia, because this takes things to a whole new level. Maybe even several levels. outer beast is backed up by performance, The Kia Stinger knocks the world off its or whether its looks are just a front and the axis and leaves you in a state of confusion. real story is one of misery and the mundane. It looks like a Kia – it’s got the Kia-style Let me put you out of your misery straight away. There’s no tales being told here, this is 100 per cent animal. So impressed by the Kia Stinger, I’m starting a Givealittle page – because no one has invented a Givealot page yet. I would gratefully receive all donations so that this poor motoring journalist can buy a Kia Stinger. Not many cars in this world can boast break-neck speeds as well as breaking the necks of pedestrians who suffer from the over-extension of their necks because they simply can’t take their eyes off it driving past. I was even stopped in the street just trying to get into it by an ardent fan who longed to own one, rattling off his knowledge and research into the vehicle. It seems someone must have spiked the water cooler

grille of the other models – but something is amiss.

When size matters

For a start, it’s big. The Stinger is quite a long, wide car, sitting low to the ground. It smacks of aggression and is probably mumbling swear words under its breath. The interior is simplistic. Simple lines, smooth dash, everything in its place and functional. Our test model was the Stinger GT-Sport, or the mac daddy of the range. Under the hood comes a 3.3L twin-turbo charged V6, producing 365bhp, or 272kW in the local language. That’s powerful in itself, but couple that with 510NM of torque, and suddenly you’ve changed the rotation of the planet. I’ve driven more powerful cars, but somehow the Kia delivers it in such a way that it outstrips those others. The Stinger is capable of 0–100kmh in just 4.9 seconds. And the noise. Oh the noise! The sweet-sounding V6 is a dream, with aggressive growl yet without being obtrusive.

To the moon and back

With anything that’s capable of a round trip to the moon in under 30 minutes, safety is paramount. The Stinger boasts a five-star ANCAP safety rating, with a mix of

the usual safety features plus a little bit of Kia special sauce, making the body more rigid. The Stinger also comes with the best toys in the market, such as Apple Carplay, Android Auto and the like, but with extras like a full ‘around-view’ monitor to give you all angles of the car for parking and manoeuvring, rear-view camera, and smart cruise control, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to vehicles ahead, to the point where it will bring the car to a complete stop, and start you on your way again.

The choices

A premium sound option is standard in the GT-Sport, with the stunning Harmon/ Kardon sound system. Add to that, the Kia comes with a five-year/100,000km warranty, roadside assistance and four years – yes, four years or 40,000km free scheduled servicing to private buyers. If you don’t want quite as much grinning in your life, there’s a smaller 2.0L turbo on offer too, however this still produces an impressive 182kW or 244bhp. On the in-car smarts, there’s Bluetooth and all that jazz, but there’s also a driving mode for every occasion. There’s an Eco mode, which actually turns the car into a delightful cruiser, while saving you a bit of gas. Comfort mode is your normal everyday driving experience. Then we get to Sport mode, which transforms the car into a tiger that hasn’t eaten in many days and has just spotted a gazelle.

There’s also Smart mode. And Smart mode is smart, adapting to the driver to always keep you happy.

I want it

All in all, I would totally buy this car, and will gratefully receive donations to that end. It’s not often you get something that looks, drives and makes you feel the way the Stinger does. What’s even better, is that normally those features means the vehicle tends to live with the mechanic, but here you get the quality and reliability of a Kia, with all the fun of the fair. There are three flavours of Stinger available, starting with the EX-Turbo at $45,990, GT-Line at $59,990, to the very special GT-Sport at $69,990. Head to Tauranga Motor Company, 326 Cameron Road and take a glance at this beauty. You’ll be seeking donations very shortly afterwards too, but me first okay? Jay Burston

Helping keep motorcyclists safe Motorcyclists are being reminded to fine-tune their skills, and drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists as summer approaches and more motorcycles are getting back on the road. September is Motorcycle Awareness Month, an initiative to help all road users be aware of how they can help to keep motorcyclists safe. In 2017, 45 motorcyclists lost their life on the road and 7372 motorcyclists received treatment and support from ACC. The awareness campaign message is that whether you ride or drive, everyone plays a part in motorcycle safety. Ride Forever programme manager David Keilty says spring is an excellent time for riders to fine-tune their skills. “We’d encourage riders to refresh their skills by taking advantage of Ride Forever

coaching, so they can enjoy riding right throughout the warmer months. Riders who complete a Ride Forever course are 27 per cent less likely to submit a claim with ACC when compared to riders who haven’t completed a course.” Drivers can play their part by turning their head to check their blind spot, especially before changing lanes, and always looking twice at intersections. AA Driving School general manager Roger Venn says the AA is fully behind motorcycle awareness month. “We understand that bikers are vulnerable in any kind of interaction with other road users. We encourage all drivers and riders to look out for each other, to be courteous, to show respect for one another. “Remember we are all human and we all make mistakes – safety is improved if we expect and accept that.” For more information on Motorcycle Awareness Month visit: www.motorcycleawareness.co.nz
