Big change for small change

SPECS LDV D90 Engine: 2.0L, turbo-charged petrol Power: 165kW/350Nm Torque Transmission: 6-speed automatic

For those of you who hover around my vintage and hail from Old Blighty, you’ll recall LDV as a commercial vehicle maker, spawned from the depths of Austin/British Leyland into the mix and match of Leyland DAF Vehicles. That era went along with most of British motoring history – history being the operative word. Now, LDV has been born again under Chinese motor vehicle manufacturer SAIC, and what a rebirth it has been. LDV hit the ground running with highly successful commercial vehicles, and now they are turning their sights on the passenger vehicle market. Enter the LDV D90. The LDV D90 is a monster truck, around five metres long and almost two metres wide, packed with seven seats and all the technology you can expect from a modern, high-end vehicle. There’s one thing that will stop you in your tracks immediately though – the price.

Bang for buck

It’s fair to say price shock comes into play with the LDV D90 – you won’t believe just how much vehicle you can get for the price. Seriously, the price of this thing is ridiculous. You can barely get a mid-sized family sedan for the same amount of change. We all know the old saying ‘you get what you pay for’. The LDV D90 turns that on its head and presents us with a new saying ‘you must have been paying too much all along’. Enough about price, what about the car? Let’s be honest, many Chinese vehicles have left a lot to be desired. Basic tin boxes, with an essence of ‘some other’ manufacturer. The LDV D90, however, smashes that mould, with aggressive front styling and smooth lines to its tail. If you took the LDV badge off, most pundits would be left guessing as to the heritage of this vehicle. Similarly, the interior of the LDV is modern, well-laid out and extremely comfortable. And sure, there’s a certain amount of plastic where you might find leather in premium cars, but it’s plastic done well. There’s no rattles, squeaks or scrapes and it genuinely feels a well-built car. And let me just add, there’s more expensive SUVs on the market that can’t boast the same. Taking centre stage is a whopping 12-inch screen containing the infotainment system. The interface is beautifully designed and easy to operate. It contains all the latest do-dahs, such as Apple Car Play and Android Auto, reverse camera, Bluetooth phone connection and plenty of entertainment settings. Leg room is plentiful throughout, with the centre seats also

being on slide rails to refine the cabin to suit all passengers. Don’t forget, you can fit seven in here, and all seats are fit for an adult. Fold those seats down and you end up with a whopping great 2.3 cubic metres of space in the boot.

Smooth ride

Out on the road the D90 is a soft and cruisy affair. It feels like a big comfy armchair, sailing along the roads. That doesn’t mean it can’t go around a corner though – the D90 is very capable for a machine of its standing. Powered by a 2.0L turbo-charged petrol engine, it squeezes an average fuel consumption rating of 10.9L/100km. That may seem a little high for a 2.0 car, but it does pull along a large vehicle, and also has a two tonne towing capacity, so it’s no slouch for its size. Additional toys include adaptive cruise control, the set and forget of all cruise controls, adjusting your speed to the vehicle in front. The D90 also comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, and an incredibly impressive five-year or 130,000km warranty – outstripping pretty much everything in, and out, of its class. The D90 has only just launched in New Zealand, and LDV is offering a special deal on the two-wheel drive of just $39,990 + ORC. Go take a look at it, compare it with everything else on the market and tell me that isn’t a steal. In fact, don’t waste your time. I’ve already compared it to everything else in this class and it’s untouchable. Does that mean you should buy it? Well, that’s entirely up to you. I have to admit, I was expecting to be utterly underwhelmed when this test drive came about, and I ended up being very surprised. My bet is that you will be too.

Meet the maker

As the saying goes ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ – so it seems we should not judge a car by its maker. A maker that’s already got a proven fleet of commercial vehicles under its belt, and has backed its first line of SUVs with an impressive warranty. Leave your judginess at home and head to LDV Tauranga at 408 Cameron Road and take a look at it for yourself. Of course, you might want to phone and book first as once word gets out, you could be turning up to long queue. Jay Burston

Motor home rally ‘a meeting of minds’

Socialising is a key ingredient at the Auto-Trail Owners Club annual rally, which is coming to Tauranga later this month.

A procession of motor homes will cruise into Tauranga Racecourse from October 26-28 for the Auto-Trail Owners Club annual rally. Around 150 of the luxury, UK-made motor homes will attend the rally which will feature talks from experts on e-bikes, solar panels and batteries, electric cars, awnings and shades, fire extinguishers and fire safety and general advice on maintaining the Auto-Trail. There is also plenty of socialising on offer, including dinner at the racecourse and a sightseeing coach trip around Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. This is the first time the annual rally has come to Tauranga. Tauranga Auto-Trail owner and club member Martin Sydenham says the Auto-Trail model is relatively new to New Zealand, however the club has grown to more than 500 members in recent years. As opposed to many European models, the Auto-Trail is favoured by many because the habitation door is on the correct side of the vehicle for New Zealand roads.

Martin describes the rallies as “a meeting of minds”. “We’re all of a similar social standing,” he says, “and it’s a huge opportunity to exchange technical information and travel experiences. “When we travelled around the South Island we met up with people we met at the last rally in Waipu (Northland).” The luxury motor homes come with their own shower, toilet and cooking facilities, and members are responsible when it comes to how they camp and their impact on the environment. “Certainly we’re very interested in the rules around freedom camping,” he says. Martin and his wife Lynne, originally from England, are currently waiting on their newest Auto-Trail to arrive before planning their next road trip. “We’ve travelled around the whole of New Zealand in a car, but you’re always in a rush,” says Martin. “It’s much nicer to stop somewhere for a few days if you really like it, or move on quickly if you don’t. It’s great to be able to spend enough time at all the beauty spots to appreciate them and get to know them.”
