Guts, glory and gorgeous
If I was a betting man, I would stop wasting that money, give up betting and buy the 2019 Kia Sportage Diesel instead.
Upgrades from the LX include 18-inch alloys, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, electronic parking brake, tinted rear privacy glass, smart key and push button start/stop. All these upgrades are currently offered by Tauranga Kia for just $1000 on the LX price of $34,990, plus on-road costs.
Kia’s 2019 Sportage LX Plus Diesel, to use its full name, is probably the most performant vehicle in its class that I’ve ever driven. Our little red devil was the ultimate wolf in sheep’s clothing, although to be fair, it’s also got pretty wolfish clothing. The LX Plus is the better-than-entry-model version, with a few nice upgrades to boot. Having reviewed the previous model, not much has changed to the unmistakably Kia-esque exterior. A nip and tuck here and there, but I would say that’s a good thing – the Sportage was already a very nice-looking SUV. You still get excellent ride quality, and I’m still amazed at just how good it is. It feels planted, sturdy and smooth on the road, and a bit of rough black top is a walk in the park. The diesel engine itself is available across three different models – The LX, LX Plus and GT-Line. It’s a 2.0L Common-Rail Diesel Turbo pushing out 136kW, or 182hp in old money. That’s a fair amount in itself, but the torque from this engine – 400Nm! The acceleration is truly amazing, and I was left impressed.
Economical – phew
The power and performance is one thing, but economy is another. With the current ouchy fuel prices, you’ll be happy to know that the combined cycle fuel economy comes out on average to just 6.4L per 100km. Gently driving around an urban area, I was getting numbers closer to five. Having driven both the petrol and diesel variants, my preference would be the diesel. Coupled with the LX Plus spec, you get a very well-rounded package for very sensible money. Tell The LX Plus Sportage Diesel comes in at just $43,990 plus on-road costs, currently on promotion at Tauranga Motor Company for $35,990 plus on-road costs. You also get the super smooth eight-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to the six-speed in the petrol variants. All diesels also come with four-wheel-drive as standard.
Touch options
The 7-inch centre touch screen on the Kia houses a nice variety of options. All the usual players are here – Apple Car Play, Android Auto etc., plus connectivity to your Bluetooth phone. A nice touch is the two USB charging ports for your devices, because why should just one person get to charge their device? There’s also three 12v power outlets, so you can keep all the passengers entertained with various bring-along entertainment. Speaking of passengers, if the four spots for the usual passengers isn’t enough, try folding down the back seats. This unleashes a cavernous 1455L of space. With some careful planning, you could fit the contents of a furniture store in there.

The Kia Sportage comes in nine different flavours, from the base model LX 2.0L petrol (currently on promotion at Tauranga Motor Company for $29,990 plus on-road costs) or 2.0L diesel, to the range-topping GT Line, available in 2.4L petrol or 2.0L diesel. Most model variants are available in 2WD or AWD. All models offer great mileage, with the 2.0L diesel starting at just 6.4L/100km to the 8.5L/100km (combined cycle) of the top line 2.4L petrol engines – however, when you consider that the diesel offers similar performance figures to the 2.4L petrol, it becomes a very attractive offering. Safety isn’t an issue here either, with all models in the Sportage family achieving five-star ANCAP safety ratings. All in all, the Kia Sportage offers everything you could want in an SUV, in a very well-built package and at a great price. Kia’s latest corporate look is bold and stand-out, so if you like to turn a head or two, you might have found your vehicle. Jay Burston

An upgrade of the Omokoroa intersection on State Highway 2 is on its way.
Updated plans to improve the safety of State Highway 2 between Waihi and Tauranga have been announced, with some projects going ahead immediately and others on the back burner. The New Zealand Transport Agency has re-evaluated the transport plans for the corridor to align with priorities set out in the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport. It has confirmed the need for a new state highway on the current alignment of the Tauranga Northern Link, with new plans including a two-lane route – one lane in each direction – between Te Puna and Tauranga alongside the existing road. There is an option for additional lanes on SH2, which may include a range of uses, including enabling public transport to cater for growth to the west of the city. The construction timing and form of this route will depend on growth and funding priorities across the rest of the country.
NZTA’s Brett Gliddon says the first priority is making people’s journeys safer with improvements to the existing road, such as flexible median and side barriers, wide centre lines and protecting people from hazards on the roadsides. "The first section of the $101 million Waihi to Omokoroa safety improvements package is already under way. “Between Omokoroa and Te Puna, we will start with safety improvements, including an upgrade of the Omokoroa intersection.” The Katitaki bypass is not included in the new work, however NZTA says it will work with the community to improve traffic management. “We will continue to hold the land designations which protect the route between Omokoroa and Te Puna, the Katikati bypass and the Tauranga Northern Link. “This means we will still have the ability to construct in these designations when the timing is right,” says Brett. A speed limit review of SH2 between Katikati and Bethlehem is also under way.

Stone columns mark milestone Retrofitted seatbelt safety alert The NZ Transport Agency is urging vehicle for new road link owners who have retrofitted seatbelts to check the labels on their seatbelts following safety concerns leading to a recall.
An aerial photo of the Baypark to Bayfair Link showing how the new city-bound lanes from Baypark will look once completed. Photo: NZTA.
The first of 3400 stone columns, which would reach from Mount Maunganui to Waihi Beach if they were laid out end-to-end, have been installed on the Baypark to Bayfair Link project. The columns will improve the ground conditions throughout the site so it can eventually take the weight of the two flyovers. Installing stone columns involves putting vertical columns of stone (gravel) into the ground and using vibration to move the sand to make way for the stone. This is being done using an 80-tonne crawler crane with a 3.2 tonne ‘vibroflot’ attached – the vibrating element that carries out the compaction and delivers the stone. NZ Transport Agency project manager John McCarthy says the installation of the columns
is a significant milestone for the project. “The stone columns will cover more than two rugby fields and use enough gravel to fill eight Olympic-size swimming pools. “They push against the surrounding ground, increasing its density and enabling the ground to support the weight of the on and off ramps that will be built on top. “It will also protect the ground from the risks of liquefaction during an earthquake.” Construction of the 3400 stone columns is expected to take approximately 10 months. The Baypark to Bayfair Link is designed to reduce congestion and improve safety by separating local and state highway traffic and providing walking and cycling connections. The key features include the construction of two flyovers and improvements to the SH29A and Truman Lane roundabout, and the SH2 Maunganui-Girven Roads roundabout.
Seatbelts imported by Business Ventures Limited and manufactured by Changzhou BWD, China can be identified by a label located on the seatbelt strap. These seatbelts are the subject of an urgent safety alert following Transport Agency tests indicating they do not meet an approved safety standard. NZ Transport Agency spokesman Charles Ronaldson says BVL/Changzhou BWD seatbelts are mostly used for retrofitting into modified vehicles such as motorhomes, buses and vans. They are also commonly used to replace original vehicle seatbelts if they’ve been damaged and fail a vehicle inspection. The failures identified in testing were related to over-the-shoulder belts that have a ‘D-ring’ guide and retractor. Most lap belts do not have these features and are not included in this safety alert. “Safety is top our priority - we are urging people that if BVL/Changzhou BWD seatbelts are fitted in their vehicle’s driver seat, that they do not use their vehicle until replacements are fitted,” says Charles. Vehicle owners and operators who have purchased a BVL/Changzhou BWD seatbelt should talk to the retailer they purchased it from. If vehicle owners purchased a vehicle with the seatbelts already fitted, they should talk directly to BVL. Full information is available at www.nzta.govt.nz
The label is typically located between the door and the seat.
Crash testing found failure occurred in the shoulder anchor point (D-ring) and the retractor mechanism failing to lock and prevent run-out of the belt.
