Weekend Wheels December 1: North Island Saloon Car Championship, Mount Maunganui Baypark Family Speedway’s first championship event of the season is the North Island Saloon Car Championship. Club raises money for Rescue Helicopter Hundreds of people turned out at Masonic Park on The Strand in Tauranga for the Jaguar Anniversary Weekend recently. The Bay of Plenty Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club secretary/treasurer Tony Johnson says the cars, on display on November 10-11, ranged in age from 1947, through to 2019 models from local dealer Duncan and Ebbett. “They included both racing cars, sports cars and saloon cars, with Jaguars newest two SUV’s also on display - the F-Pace and the E-Pace,” says Tony. The meet up was to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Bay of Plenty Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club. A gold coin donation was collected from the public, with more than $500 being raised to go towards the TECT Rescue Helicopter. “Being a car club, we feel it’s important to support causes other than just drive cars. So the TECT Rescue Helicopter was chosen,” says Tony. “It does a lot of emergency work due to car accidents, so there is a link to our driving

outings. One of our committee members, John Bickers, has an association with the rescue base and is a strong supporter of the rescue helicopter. As a club we agree, and are also strong supporters of the essential service. “To add interest we invited other sister Jaguar Clubs from New Zealand to participate and had a few other Jaguar-related anniversaries to attract a wider cross section of cars. “Dave and Kim Ferens, from New Plymouth, had a faithful replica of the 1953 race winner, as did Murray and Jenny Mason from Wellington. “Having two C-type replicas of the 1953 race winner was pretty special. We had another Le Mans 24-hour race winner replica as well, and that was Larry Prices’ D-type, with the big ﬁn at the back. It is a stunning looking vehicle. “The most expensive Jaguar we had was a new build XKSS. It was originally built as the road going version of the 1955/56/57 Le Mans winning race car, the D-type.” Tony says that the event was extremely special and is unlikely to be repeated.
