More space than space itself

Just when you thought the Honda Jazz RS couldn’t get any better, Honda unleashes the 2019 model and manages to make even more improvements. Adding some pizzazz to the standard Jazz is the RS model, with a bigger engine, bigger wheels, bigger spirit and a much bigger attitude. The new MY19 Jazz RS comes with a 1.5L i-VTEC engine, producing 97kW and an impressive 155Nm of torque. That’s quite a lot of punch for a small engine. Coupled with Honda’s ‘EarthDreams’ transmission choices of seven-speed auto with

paddle shifters or six-speed manual, there’s a definite feeling of sportiness. All new 16-inch silver alloy wheels (not black as pictured), RS aero bumpers, diffusers, side-skirts and a spoiler add real flair to the RS. It gives off a menacing look - this Jazz RS would fight off anything that comes on to its patch. Ride and handling are uprated with RS sports suspension and steering, and you certainly can’t complain about the handling on this car. The ride quality is great too, considering it has those extra tweaks. The damping on the suspension is excellent, giving you a smooth ride despite the firmer suspension. Inside the Jazz you won’t be disappointed either. It’s quite amazing just how spacious a small car can be. Even Doctor Who would be amazed at how much bigger it feels on the inside. The dashboard is graced with a premium soft touch finish, a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter and sports fabric trim. Comfort wise, the Jazz RS offers up stylish, comfortable and supportive seats. The layout of the controls are very well thought out, with everything in easy reach of the driver. The infinitely-adjustable seats can suit any possible desired

posture, with ‘Magic’ 18-way adjustable settings. There’s also several modes of configuration, such as refresh mode, long mode, tall mode and utility mode, each converting the Jazz into a highly versatile vehicle. Elsewhere, the storage capacity is quite amazing, with a total load length of 2.4m, height of 1.2m and a boot capacity of 363 litres. Chop and change the configuration and this expands to a whopping 1323 litres of space! You could be forgiven for thinking the Jazz is a mini SUV, but it is probably the most practical and versatile small car on the market. You could comfortably go camping in it, should the need arise. Leg room in the back is no issue at all for adult passengers - even relatively tall ones. You can happily fit four adults with complete comfort, or squeeze in a fifth in the back seats and still have no one crying ‘are we there yet?’. Adding to the chill factor, the RS comes with cruise control and digital climate control, and also benefits from heat absorbing glass to help keep the interior that bit more comfortable. Centre stage is the seven-inch display, which houses a three-way reverse camera display and all the infotainment you could possibly need. The Jazz RS comes with a six-speaker audio system with a CD player and USB inputs. Out on the road, the Jazz RS is a very capable machine. City streets may be its

DNA, but highway driving is like a relaxing holiday to the RS. Zipping through the city is a breeze, parking is easy and, thanks to lower set glass lines, visibility is nothing short of superb. Our test model, the RS CVT Automatic, was a real joy to drive. The raucous 1.5L engine is spritely and responsive when pushed, yet it quietens down to a purr when cruising. The transmission always knows where it needs to be, so there’s never that feeling of lag or hesitation when hitting a hill or navigating a winding rural road. Price wise, the Jazz RS manual is a very worthwhile $25,390 + ORC and the CVT model a smidge more at $26,790 + ORC. These are very competitively priced compared to competitors, yet you get that allimportant, built in bullet-proof Hondaness. If you want something practical, sporty, comfortable and responsive that’s a joy to drive, then taking a look at the Honda Jazz RS is a must. It’s also practical. Did I mention how practical it is? It is. Very. To help get you in to a new Jazz, Honda is running two special promotions. You can score a new Honda with 1/3 down, 1/3 next year and 1/3 in the final year with 0 per cent interest, or finance from a super low 3.9 per cent over 36 months with $0 deposit (*excludes Type R). Point your old car in the direction of Bay of Plenty Honda on Elizabeth Street and get your dose of pizzazz in a Jazz today. Jay Burston

Racers ready to hit the dust It will be all engines go this Sunday for this year’s Waikato Challenge Cup. The event, held by the Waikato Offroad Racing Club, will take place at the club track at TECT Park and it’s a race spectators are looking forward to. The format for Sunday is simple. It’s two, one-hour forest enduro races, with a lunch break in between, and Waikato Cup president Justin Williams says the club has been working hard for the last couple of weeks in the build-up. “We have been connecting up the club track to the rest of the roads, to create an 8km loop and marking out the course,” says Justin. “With the use of the club’s short course track, spectators will have ample opportunity to see the cars.” Current Waikato Challenge Cup champion Dyson Delahunty is aiming to regain the title, and also debuting his new race car. His Polaris RS1 has undergone some major changes over the past couple of weeks. It has gone from an off the floor model, making it legal to race. With some testing already being done on his car, Dyson says he is looking forward to comparing it to the other cars speed-wise. “My RS1 is the first one built in the country,” he says, “so it will

The round of funding, from the government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund, focuses on projects expanding the use and potential of electric vehicles and other low emissions technology in the transport space. Some 31 projects will share the funding, made up of $4.3 million of government co-funding and $7.3 million of funds from the private sector. “This is by far the biggest round of new projects delivered by the fund,” says Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods. It will help more Kiwis make use of new transport technology, lower carbon emissions and contribute to the economy. From 100 per cent electric campervans for tourists to hydrogen fuel cell powered buses at the Ports of Auckland, to solar panel-charged electric vehicles and the trial of smart chargers in people’s homes, they are new technologies expected to make a difference. There’s also funding for a further 34 new public charging spaces for electric vehicles right around New Zealand, aimed at creating a national infrastructure so major trips around the country are available to EV users. “Transport is responsible for about 18 per cent of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions,” says Megan, “so one of the most effective ways for us to help tackle climate change is to transition our fossil-fueled transport fleet to run on clean, renewable energy sources.”

Another tragic year of road deaths The Automobile Association is urging drivers to think about how they can help make our roads safer in 2019. For a fifth straight year, the number of people killed in crashes increased in 2018, with a provisional number of 380 deaths. The number continues a tragic trend of more deaths and injuries from crashes since the record low year of 2013, when 253 people lost their lives. “When people think about fatal crashes, they generally think about behaviour like someone driving drunk or at extreme speeds,” says AA road safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen, “but this is only part of the picture. “A study by the AA Research Foundation found that about half of fatal crashes involved extreme and reckless behaviour, but the other half tended to involve ordinary, everyday drivers who might make a mistake or a bad decision behind the wheel with tragic results. “To turn around the terrible increase in road deaths we don’t just need to focus on stopping the extreme behaviour. “The AA encourages everyone to think about their own behaviour on the roads and if there are things that you could do better?” says Dylan. “The New Year is a good time to think about whether there were times in 2018 when you went too fast for the conditions, kept driving when you were tired, were distracted by other things or lost your cool behind the wheel,” says Dylan. “Along with all the big-picture actions from the Government

and authorities, improving safety needs the millions of individuals out on the roads every day to do what they can to reduce the risks. “Simple things like always buckling up, driving to the conditions, keeping a good following distance and avoiding distractions may not seem like much, but when you have millions of people doing them they add up to make a real difference.” Police statistics show that a third of drivers and passengers who die on our roads aren’t wearing their seatbelts. Regardless of how fast you are travelling, seatbelts save lives, and wearing your seatbelt properly will reduce your risk of injury or death. In the last three years, more than 284 people who died in New Zealand crashes were not wearing their seatbelt. Police say many of these people would still be alive today if they were safely wearing their seatbelt. Using your cellphone while driving can cost you more than a fine and demerit points – it can cost you your life. Using a mobile phone to make, receive, or terminate a phone call, create, send or read a text or a video message, or communicate in any way – including the use of social media – is illegal and can result in an $80 fine and 20 demerit points. The AA are urging people to drive to the conditions, stick to a safe speed, give yourself plenty of following distance and keep your focus on driving, avoiding mobile phones and other distractions. Never drive if you’re tired or affected by alcohol, illegal or prescription drugs, and always wear your seatbelt.

If you’re passionate about anything with wings or wheels, the Thames Wings and Wheels show on January 26 is the place to be. Come and see a static display of aircraft and vehicles, ranging from vintage and classic cars right through to new electronic cars and bikes. All manner and variety of aircraft and machinery will be on display. There will also be live music from Tim Armstrong and Band, as well as Crimson Coast, Andy Mac and Deb Standen. Food stalls, barbecues, drinks and ice creams will also be available to compliment an exceptional day out. The event will raise funds for Thames Air Cadets, and is held in conjunction with Hauraki Aeroclub and Thames Vintage Classic Car Club. Tickets cost $5 per person or $10 for a family. Children under-12 can attend free. Head to Thames Airfield on Ngati Maru Highway on Saturday from 10am for a wings and wheels spectacular. For more information, visit: www.saa.org.nz
