Hub’sfuturesecurefornow

Encouragementandfinancial helphavecombinedtosecurethe immediatefutureofTheHub TePuke.

TheHubrunsfoodsupportservices, includingTePuke’sfoodbankanda rangeofotherserviceseitheroffits ownbatorinpartnershipwithother organisations.

However,inDecember,aperilous financialpositionwasrevealed,witha worst-casescenariothatitmighthave hadtocloseonDecember20.

Theresponsewasimmediate,andthe servicessurvived.

Now,althoughtemperedwithanote ofcaution,thefutureisbrighter.

“ThelastweekofDecemberwasvery hecticandtherewerelotsofmeetings goingonwithallourfunders,”said CEOScottNicholson.

“Thefinancialsupporthascomefrom somanydifferentlevels.

“Inthecommunitythereseemstobe agrowingnumberofpeoplewhoare giving$10aweek,$5aweek,where theycanthroughtootherswhoare givingsubstantiallymore.”

Otherorganisationshavemade donations,andanewMinistryof SocialDevelopmentcontracthasbeen secured

“Withallourplanningand everythingwecanseeourselves throughtotheendofMarchthisyear easilyandwehavedonemodellingout toMarch2026andit’sdoable.

“Butthemoresupportwegetmeans themoresupportwecangive.”

Equallyimportanthasbeenthevote ofconfidenceTheHubhasreceived fromitscommunity.

“Oneofthethings,whenyougointo asituationlikethisis:Arewedoing anygood?Isthecommunitybehind whatwearedoing?Andarewedoinga goodjob?”

Theanswertoeachquestionwasa resounding“yes”.

“Ihadnumerouspeoplestopmein thestreetandtellmetheirstoryof howwe’vesupportedthemandthat thecommunitycan’tdowithoutus–whichisalittlebitsad,butatthesame timeisamazing.

“Thatinitselfwashugelybeneficialto myselfandtheteamintermsofgiving ustheenergytodowhatwecandoto ensurewecancontinue.”

Thereisstillaneedtoworktowards makingtheservicesmoresustainable.

Nicholsonsaidoneareawastolookat howTheHubworkswithothersocial serviceprovidersinTePuketopossibly findwaysofworkingclosertogetherto reduceoverallcosts.

Initiatives

“Weare[also]lookingatramping upwhatwecandointhefundraising spacewithanumberofinitiatives wearelookingatincludingpublic workshops.

“Andweareseekingsponsorshipfor someofthethingswearedoingand approachingourfundinginamore nuancedway.”

Whileshorttermthereisnoplanto reduceservices,thesituationisstill fluid.

“Rightnow,wecancontinueatthesame levelofservice,butmovingintothenew financialyearitisverytight.

“Ifwecan’tsecureanyextrafundingin thenextweekwhilewewillprobablyhave tolookatreducedservices,whetherthat isreducingouropeninghourseachdayor reducingthenumberofdaysweareopen.”

Services

TheHubprovidesadrop-incentre,various levelsoffoodsupport,socialservicesand advocacy,andhousingnavigationsupport. Otherservicesincludingbudgetservices, insuranceadvocacyandsupport,family courtnavigationandotherlegalservicesare

alsoofferedatTheHubinpartnershipwith otherorganisations.

“Ononelevelsadthatit’sneeded,butthe realityisweallhavecrisispointsatvarious timesandfamilyaren’talwaysinaposition tohelp.It’sgreatwecan,asacommunity, providearesponseorsupportforpeople.”

Whiletheseasonalworkofferedbythe up-comingkiwifruitseasonmeansthereisa possibilitydemandsonfoodsupportservices willreduce,thereisoftenanincreased demandforotherservices,particularly aroundhousingneeds.

Portable home auction to aid new clubhouse

Asthefinishingtouches arebeingputtoPukehina SurfRescue’snewbuilding, anauctionisabouttotake placethatcouldmarkthe endoffundraising.

Theclubissettoauctiona unique,portablehomecalled TheMotutoraisefundsforthe completionoftheclubhouse.

Thecustom-builtMotuhome, featuringasinglebedroom, bathroomandkitchen,would beidealasabach,sleepout, orAirbnbcabinandwillbe auctionedonTradeMe.

Clubandbuildingcommittee chairmanAndrewMcDowell saidworkonthetinyhome isongoinganditwouldbe finishedintimefortheauction scheduledforlateFebruary.

Thebuildingisnowinthesurf clubcarpark.

“It’snearingcompletion.We’ve putitinthecarparkjustso peoplehavegotahintofwhatit’s goingtolooklikeandit’sbeen gatheringsomegoodmomentum downthere.

Fundraisingplan

McDowell,whoownsKiwi CountryConstruction,has spearheadedtheinitiativeand personallybuiltthetinyhome duringweekendsandafterwork.

“TheideaforbuildingThe Motuforauctioncamefrom desperation,”hesaid.

“Ihadtocomeupwitha plantoraisemorefunds,and buildingiswhatIknow.My timeandeffortonthisprojectis mydonationtotheclub.

“Thisbachismanageable formetobuild,andIbelieve weallneedtohaveasocial conscience.It’saboutgiving backtoourcommunity.”

TheMotuhomeisvaluedat $120,000-$130,000.Bayof PlentyHouseRemovalshas offeredtocoverrelocation expensestoanapprovedsite withintheBayofPlentyarea.

“Butthere’salwaysplentyto putintoaclublikeshelvingand othertypesoffurnishingssothe money[fromtheauction]will bemorethanlikelygoingtogo intothosenicetohavesversus thewantsorneeds.”

“Weare veryclose tofinishing. Thetoweris operational,and we’vehadhundredsofpeople goingthroughittolookatthe newviewbecauseitisincredible.”

Sofarithasbeenan “exceptionallybusy”summerat thebeach.

“Ithinkbecausepeoplehave realisedwe’vegotabonafide surfclubtherenowwithnice toiletingandsoforth,it’sreally becomingaplacetogo.”

Despitethis,therehavebeen nomajorrescues.

“It’sreallyjustbeenbusinessas usual,afewminorfirstaidsand plentyofpreventativeactions, butwehaven’thadtodoany highendrescuesthankfully.

“Thebehaviourofmost peopleonthebeachhasbeen wonderful.Therehaven’tbeen anymajoranti-socialthings goingondownthere.”

AswithmanyBayofPlenty beaches,therehavebeenseveral sharksightings.

“Theweatherconditionshave beensogood.Thesharkshave alwaysbeenthere,we’vejust beenabletospotthemabit

PukehinaSurfClub

Lifeguardnumbershavebeen goodthissummer.Thejunior surfprogrammehasbeen“going greatguns”andthecompetition side,underheadcoachBoyd Harris,hasboomed.

“We’redoingextremelywellin thatareawithparticipation.The kidsarereallygettingintoitthis year.”

Theclubhoststheannual HarrisCupCarnivalonFebruary 8,acompetitionthatbrings togetherPukehinaBeach, Ōpōtiki,Whakatāne,Maketū andWaihīSurfLifeSavingClubs. Thecarnivalisnamedin honourofSelwynHarris,who establishedthesurflifesaving baseatPukehina.

Theclub’soldbuilding wasopenedin1997.Itwas removedinMarch2023.Work onthenewbuildingbeganin Septemberthatyear.

A&PShowshavebeena time-honouredfeatureof NewZealandrurallifefor decades.

ButorganisersoftheTePuke showareprovingthatdoesn’t meantheydon’tchangeand adapt.

Thisyear’sshow,setforearly nextmonth,willbethe119th andtheorganisingcommittee continuestoprovidesomething fresheachtimeitisheld.

Anewcompetitionforheavy horsesandtreeclimbing demonstrationsareamongthe newattractionsin2025.

A&PSocietysecretaryKim Cawtesaidintroducing newattractionskeepsthe

communityinvolvedinthe showandkeepsthingsfreshfor thosewhoattend.

“Andwhenyoudodifferent things–varietyisthespiceof life,”shesaid.

Theneweventsarejustasmall partofthedayofentertainment.

Livestock,ofcourse,provides themainstayofanyshowand thisyearthatwon’tbeany different.

Thedairycalfandcattlesection includesallbreeddairycattle, younghandlerclassesandan ever-growingprimaryschool boys’andgirls’calfsections.

Shearingclasseswillincludethe fullrange:junior,intermediate, senior,veteranandopenand therewillalsobeawomen’s

invitationcompetition.

TePukePonyClubwillruna noviceringearlieronintheday forotherponyclub’smembers andyoungerriderstocompete.

HorseoftheYearqualifying classesincludeParkHack, SaddleHunterandWorking Hunterevents.

Therewillalsobeafunevent forhunterjumpingforhorses andponiestojump80to90cm.

Theseeventshavebeen specificallydesignedsothatlocal peoplecanbringtheirhorsesand poniestotheshow.

Otherhorsesectionsinclude harnessandledhorsetoprovide experienceintheshowring.

Horseandponyrideswillalso beavailableforthepublicand RossWilsonwillbeproviding ridesinawagonbehindhis Clydesdales.

Butthereissomuchmoreto TePukeA&PLifestyleShow, withmechanicalbullrides,grass karts,afencingdemonstration andafundogring.

TePukeYoungFarmersClub willberunningtheladies’,men’s andchildren’sgumbootand horseshoethrowingcompetitions withprizemoney.

Thoseseekingmore competitioncanhaveagoin adigger,cantrytheirhandat drivingarallycaror,forthe seriouscompetitortheTePuke StrongestManandWoman

contestswillbeongoingthrough theday.

Thepetcornerwillhavetents fullofanimalsandbirdstopet andpurchase,Vada’sAngels AnimalRescue,TePukeFire Brigadewillbeonsite.

Afteranumberofyears withoutabarorbeertent,this yearseesaCocktailCartfor over18stobuybeer,wineand cocktails.

Thiswillcomplementthe morethan20foodstalls offeringvarietyforeveryone fromburgers,wrapsandsalad tocandyfloss,shakesand confectioneryaswellasawide rangeofinternationalfoods.

Tradesiteswillincludetractors andmachinery,electricbikes, BOPRuralSupportTrust,

motorbikes,powerequipment andotherruralandagricultural products.

Therewillbehomeindustries displays,theHargreaves Children’scompetitionand MasterandMisscompetitions forboysandgirlsbetween4and 11yearsold.

TeamsaroundNewZealandare hittingthegolfcoursetotakeona challengelikenoother–72holes, amarathon,or36holesahalf marathoninoneday,toraisefunds fortheCancerSociety.

It’satestofskill,staminaandmental strength,andonethatmanytakeonto showtheirsupportforthosefacedwith cancer–atest1in3kiwisarefacedwith intheirlifetime.

LocalsGreigandTomWilliamson (fatherandson),withfriendsBlakeSeath andAndrewWardknownas“Shanks-ALot”,willteeoffatTePukeGolfClubat 6amonJanuary31tomaximisedaylight, andtakeontheLongestDaychallenge, hopingtobedoneby6pm.

Theysharetheirdrivebehindsigningup tothechallengeforthesecondtime,with GreigandTomlosingtheirwife/mother

tocancerin1990,thenmorerecentlyin 2022aworkcolleaguepassingatjustage 47.Blakelosingaclosefriendaged36and anotherwhohasjustbeendiagnosedwho musttravel280kmonewayfortreatment.

“Theunfortunaterealityisweallknow someoneclosetousthathasbeenaffected byCancer.It’sthesupportfromthe CancerSocietythatisthereforpeople whentheyneedit,andwithoutthese servicesmanywouldnotgetthecarethey needordeserve,”saidGreig.

It’sachallengethat’sgainingtractionand excitement,somethingforgolferstotrain forandworktowards–justlikerunners foramarathon.Participantschooseaday inDecemberorJanuary,thecourse,and theteam–orplaysoloiftheyprefer.

HundredsofcalloutsforTePuke

TePukeVolunteerFireBrigade respondedto322callsin2024.

Ofthose,81(25%)weretofires,52 (16%)weremedicalcalls,40werevehicle incidents(12%),55werespecialservice andothercallswhichincludeweather events,animalrescuesandrescuesother thanthosethataremotorvehiclerelated (17%)and85(26%)werefalsealarms. Althoughfalsealarmsarehigherthan thebrigadewouldlike,theyareajustpart ofthedeal.TheriskinTePukeandthe surroundingareaissignificantbecause ofthenumberofpackhouses,other businesses,schools,resthomesandother accommodation.Wewouldmuchrather attendfalsealarmsthanactualfires.

Havinghadseveralmajorfiresatlarge businessesovertheyears,weknowtheyare challengingtoextinguishandtheimpact onthecommunitycanbefar-reachingas theyarekeyemployers.

Thisyearhasstartedaslastyearended–verybusy.

Wehaveattended18callssofar–sixto thesamepropertyonManoekaRd.We werefirstcalledtotheaddressonJanuary3 whenafirewasreportedatadisusedhouse. Itwaswellalightbutwewereableto extinguishthefirequicklywithonly moderatedamage.

Twodayslaterwewerecalledbackat 2.10amtofindthehousefullyinvolved infire.

Wewereagainabletoknockthefire downquitequickly.However,most oftheconcretetileroofstructurewas compromisedandwesuspectedasbestos waspresent,withthesefactorsmakingit unsafeforustoenterandensureafirewas totallyout.

TheremainsofthehouseonManoekaRd whereTePukeVolunteerFireBrigade visitedsixtimesinearlyJanuary.

therewasaninevitabilitytousbeingcalled backagainjustbefore7amthesameday assmokewasshowingfromthoseareaswe hadnotbeenabletoreach.

Wewererecalledagainlaterthat afternoonbecausewhentheowners demolishedtheremainstheycaughtfire again.Wedampeneddownandleftwhat wasbythenjustarubbishpiletocontinue toburn,butwerecalledoutagaintwice overnightbypassingmotoristswhocould seethefirefromthemainroad.Itseemed tobethegiftthatkeptongiving.

Theother12callssofarhavebeento twomotorvehiclecrashes,twovehicle fires,twovegetationfires,onepizzaoven firethatspreadtoahousedeck,andfive falsealarms.
