Anoutdoorswimmingpoolin winterholdslittleattractionformost people,butforQuinnBoyle,it’s whereheisonfire.

Boyle,broughtupinŌtamarākau, waspartofthe15-strongNewZealand iceswimmingteam,theFrozenFerns, thatcompetedatthesixthWorldIce SwimmingChampionshipsinMolveno, Italy,earlierthisyear.

The19-year-oldwonsilvermedalsinthe men’s18-24agegroup500mand1000m andwasfifthandsixthoverallrespectively inthetwoevents.

ItwasBoyle’ssecondworld championships,havingcompetedin Francetwoyearsago.

“Ididbetterintheagegroups,butthe wholeexperiencewaswaybetter.The sportisgainingabitmoreprofessionalism. TheyaretryingtogetintotheWinter Olympicsandit’sdefinitelygettingmore officialandmorewellrun,”hesaid.

Thereismoreprizemoneyforbreaking recordsandmoreprofessionalsentered thisyear’sworldchampionships,creatinga higherlevelofcompetition.

“Anditwasn’tthatlong.Ifeellike doingallthoseicebathsagesago,Idon’t reallyneedtodothat–IknowthatIcan swiminicenow.It’smoremental,the coldsideofthings.”

Hethinksswimmerscanswapto differentformsofthesportwithout muchdifficulty.

“There’sopenwater,there’spooland there’siceswimmingandIthinkyoucan transitionquiteeasily.Itjustcomeswith abitofpractice.”

Futureevents

NowstudyingagribusinessatLincoln UniversityinCanterbury,itisanadded bonusthatheisinthepartofthecountry wherethewateriscoldenoughforice swimming.

ThisyearQuinnwantstofocuson anotherattemptatswimmingCook Straitandwillalsolookatswimmingan icemile.

Heisundecidedaboutattendingthe nextworldiceswimmingchampionships intwoyears’time.

TePukeSportsnewheadcoachMartin Ashandhisassistant,formerSuper RugbyplayerDanHollinshead,have beenputtingplayersthroughtheirpaces sincelateJanuary.

AshisTePukeHighSchool’sdirectorof sports,butwascoachingatPaeroaSports lastseason,sojustcaughtthetailendof TePukeSports’BaywideRugbytitlewinning2024campaign.

“PaeroaSportslosttheThamesValley finalandafterthatIwatchedthe [Baywide]semifinalandthefinal.

“Thatwasmyonlyinteractionwith theclub,butworkinginTePukeatthe highschoolandbeinginvolvedinthe communityandknowinghowimportant theclubisinthecommunity,whenthe jobcameuptocoachtheteamitwas somethingIwasreallyinterestedin.”

Pre-season

Twopre-seasongamesagainstHamilton OldBoysand Morrinsville havebroughta lossandawin.

Afterthefirst game,Ash saidhewas pleasedwiththe performance.

“Weplayed acombination ofourpremier

anddevelopmentplayers.Thefinalscore was34-29toHamiltonOldBoyswhich doesn’tmeananythinginpre-season,it wasmoreaboutourpremboysgettinga decent40-oddminutestohaveacrack.”

Pre-seasontrainingbeganinlate Januaryandincludedaweekendcampon MōtītīIsland.

“Itwasareally,reallygoodcamp.We didn’tspendalotoftimesmashingthe boyswithfitnessandbitsandpieces,it wasmoreaboutbreakingdownbarriers withtheboysbecausewe’vegotanew playergroupthereandanewcoaching groupaswell.

“Theboysdon’tknowmefromabarof soap,sothebigconceptofthecampwas togettoknoweachotheralittlebitmore, butalsowedidalotofculturalstuff.

Everyonehadtoshareastoryaboutwho we’replayingforandwhatwe’replaying forthisyear.”

Theteamhaveadoptedthreevalues fortheseason:tobeconsistent,tobe accountable,andtohavefun;andit’sno secretthat theseasonlonggoal istoretain theBaywide premiership.

“Iwouldn’t havecome onboardasa coachandI’m suretheclub wouldn’thave

hiredmeasacoachifthatwasn’tmygoal. That’swhattheboyswanttodo,soweare onthesamepagewiththat.”

Ashsaidhedidn’twanttochange whatwasworkingandwaslookingfor consistency.

“Mywholephilosophyistomaketheboat gofaster.Whatwearedoingisworking really,reallywell,sowhatcanIaddtomake thingsmoreconsistentattheclub?

“It’sbasicallyjusttokeepyourfootonthe throttleatalltimes,whichisreallyhardto doforplayers.Theseasonislongandwe’ve gottokeeptheboysupateverytraining andeverygame.It’smassivelymental.”

Wealsohadfoursmokeinvestigations,onecallfor thetankertoassistwithastructurefireatAinsworth (butnotrequired)andsixvegetationfires.

OnMonday,wehadjustfinishedputtingouta smallfireonQuarryRdthathadjumpedfroma controlledburnnearbywhenwewerecalledtoa grassfireatHookeyDrive,TePuke.Uponarrival itlookedspectacular,generatinglargevolumesof smokefromanareaaround25mby15m.

Fortunately,itwasmoresmokethanfireand wewereabletoquicklyextinguishbeforeitcould spreadtoneighbouringproperties. Thereisacautionarytale,however.

Theoccupantsofaneighbouringpropertyhad litabrazierthepreviousnight.Thinkingtheashes wereoutandcoldtheyemptiedthemintothe vacantlandoverthefence.

Unfortunately,ashescanremainhotfordaysand caneasilyigniteitemstheycomeintocontactwith. NEVERemptythemintoaplasticbucketor rubbishbin,andifdisposingofthem,always thoroughlydrownwithwaterbeforedoingso.

Overtheyearswehaverespondedtomultiplecalls causedbyincorrectdisposalofashes,includingone majorhousefireinNo1Rdsomeyearsagowhen theoccupantsemptiedtheirfireashesintoaplastic bucketandsatthemonthebackporch.

Ittooksometime,butduringthenightthe plasticignited,whichinturnquicklyspreadtothe houseanddetachedgarage.

Heisassistinguswithourinquiriesinrespectoftheburglariesthat havetakenplaceoverthepastfourweeksandfurtherchargesare expected.Wearealsoexpectingtomakefurtherarrestsinrespectof theburglaries.
