Progresshasbeenrapidonthe constructionofanewTePuke communityhousingdevelopment, withthefirsttenantsexpectedto moveinthisyear.

Theproject,whichfeaturessixmodern, well-constructedunits,aimstoaddress thegrowingneedintheregionfor suitablehousingforolderpeopleand thosewithchronichealthconditions.

ConstructionofEvergreenHouse –WhareKatoacommencedinmidJanuarywithonetwo-bedroomandfive one-bedroomunitsplanned.

EvergreenHousehasreceivedLifemark 4provisionalcertificationforallsixunits, ensuringaccessibilityandsuitabilityfor ageinginplace.

Thiscommunityhousingdevelopment at8GeorgeStwasspearheadedbythe JabezInitiativeCharitableCompanyin partnershipwiththeTePukeBaptist Church,whichisnextdoor.

Priority

JabezInitiativedirectorAmyCumming saidafterextensivediscussionsitwas decidedpriorityfortenancywouldbegiven toolderpeople(55-plus)and/orpeople withachronichealthconditionwhoare onthePublicHousingRegisterandwould benefitfromhousingdesignedforageingin placeandmobility(Lifemarklevel4),with prioritygiventomanawhenua.

Shesaidtheprojectalsoreceivedcrucial approvalfromtheMinistryofHousingand UrbanDevelopmentforPublicHousing Use,allowingtheunitstoaccommodate tenantsontheNationalHousingRegister.

Thedevelopmenthadpassedsignificant

milestones,includingtheissuanceof thebuildingconsentinJuly,coinciding perfectlywiththescheduledstartof earthworks.

Overcominginitialsitechallengessuch asunexpectedsoakholesandaseptic tank,theteamdiligentlypreparedthe groundforconstruction.

“Thelastsixmonthshavebeenvery busyfortheJabezInitiativeteamaswe’ve donatedourtimeandexpertisetokeep thingsmoving,”Cummingsaid.

“It’salsobeenanamazinglyencouraging journeyandit’swonderfultoseetheunits startingtotakeshape.”

Buildinghomes

G.J.GardnerHomes,ledbyShaneand KirstyMcConnell,hadbeeninstrumental inbringingthevisiontolife.

“Buildingwarm,dryspacesforpeople tocallhomeandfeelsafeandsecurein,is

whywedowhatwedo,”Shanesaid.“It isaprivilegetobepartneringwithallthe stakeholders.”

JabezInitiativedirectorAirdrieGrylls saidincrediblegenerosityonmanylevels hadsignificantlyeasedthefinancial burdenandoveralloutcomeoftheproject.

“Therehavebeentimesthatithas beenhardtoseeawayforward,butan opportunityoutsideourinfluencehas alwayspresenteditself,”Gryllssaid.

Arecentvisittothesitebyagenerous donorhighlightedtheproject’simpact.

“It’ssuchaninspiringproject,andfor mywifeandIitspeaksvolumesofthe opennessofthechurchtocontributeto thewellbeingofthetownandthosein needofhousing.”

TheyalsoquotedJeremiah29:4-7, emphasisingtheimportanceofseekingthe welfareofthecommunity.

Bestoflocal theatreat SimplyShort

Sixoriginalplaysarebeing proudlypresentedbyTe PukeRepertoryatthethird biennialSimplyShortPlay FestivalinTePukethis month.

Festivalselectionpanel co-ordinatorOwenForcesaid theselectionpanelhad20 submissionsfromwhichtoselect agroupofsix.

“Itwasadifficultundertaking tochoosejustsixastherewere manysubmissionsthatwere excellentplays,”Forcesaid.

“Weendeavouredtochoosea groupthatworkedwelltogether whilestillgivingagoodvariety ofofferings.Wethinkwehave selectedagroupthatfulfilsour objectivesnicely.”

ThesixplaysselectedareNext, andMrAdamsReturnsbyDolly Varden-Chambers;Assassin byBrianJohnston;Me,Iby NinaMaryW;Heaven’sDoor byChristopherPeters;Youcall thatLovebyColleenPye;and RemainsUnknownbyMichelle Cliff.

Thefestival,whichhasbeen runningsince2020,isintended foradultsandyoungadults,with organiserssayingthequalityand numberofplayssubmittedeach timecontinuestogrow.

“Allofmyplaysaredrawnfrom real-lifesituations,”Pyesaid.

“Themeasureofmyplaysisnot abouthowmuchpeoplelaughed orcriedbutdoesitresonatein theirownlife.”

Apersonaltouch

Cliffsaidherplay,Remains Unknown,isamonologue, drawnfromherpersonal experience.

“Itintenselyexaminesthe treatmentofbereftwomenbut then,withhope,bringspeaceto thetroubledwatersofstillbirth.”

Johnstonsaidthat,asayoung actorinUKprofessionaltheatre yearsago,hewitnessedolder actorsbeing“outrightnasty” toothers.“Theyexpectedto betreatedasstars,wereoften dismissiveofstagemanagers, wardrobestaffanddressers.Iwas alsoinspiredtowritethepiece becauseIoftenthinktherearen’t

enoughmeatypartsforolder actorstogettheirteethinto. Ialsowantedtowriteapiece withanunexpectedtwist.”

Littlethings

Peterssaidhisplay,Heaven’s Door,isalight-heartedlookat someoftheideaspeoplehave aboutheaven–“thepearly gates,StPeter,gettingevaluated onwhetherwegetintoheaven ornot”.

“Butit’salsoachanceto realisethatlifeisabalance, and,whilewe’reallgoingtodo somethingswrong,it’sup toustodothingsrightaswell

–thatlittlethingsmatter.”

Two-in-one

Varden-Chamberwhohastwo storiesbeingperformedasone playinthefestival,saidboth havehumourastheirkeynote.

“Theidea[forNext]came whenmyneighbourfaileda cognitivetestandtoldmewhat shehadtodo,soIinventedMr Adams,anintelligentman,who deliberatelyridiculesthetestby takingeverythingliterallyand stressingoutthedoctor.”

ShesaidMrAdamsReturns‘ isafollow-uptothefirststory withthesamecharacter.

“Butthistime,IthoughtI wouldseewhatdifferencethere mightbeinmycharacterif hehadtodealwithafemale doctor.Eachplayisunique, creativeandfullofsurprises,” Forcesaid.

“Youwilllaugh,youmight shedatear,andsomemoments willleaveyouthinkinglong afterthecurtainfalls.Join usforthisone-of-a-kind celebrationoflocaltalent–you won’twanttomissit.”

“Connectingwithourcommunity,intheirplace,isan integralpartofthemahi(work)wedoattheCouncil,” saidWesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncildeputy CEOandstrategyandcommunitygeneralmanager RachaelDavie.

Communityforumswereintroducedbycouncilin 2023,togivepeopletheopportunitytomeetwiththeir localcouncillorsinaninformalsetting.

Lastyear,counciltrialledanewformat,hostinganexpotypeeventinTePukewherepeoplecouldexploreproject hubsaroundtheroomandkōrerowithcouncillorsand thecouncilteam.

“Itwasasuccessfulevent,andwereceivedlotsof valuablefeedbackfromthecommunity.

“Wearelookingforwardtorollingtheseoutacrossthe rohe,andgettinginputfrompeopleontheground,so wecanshapethefutureofourcommunitytogether.”

TePukefarmers shineatBOP DairyIndustry Awards

Te Puke’s s Young Farmers have been recognisedatthisyear’sBayof PlentyDairyIndustryAwards. Threemembersoftheclubplacedatthe recentawards.

AlanaFitzpatrickbetteredherrunner-up placinglastyeartotakeoutthedairy TraineeoftheYeartitle,whilethird placeinthecategorywenttoJulian Tambourlas,afarmassistantonJohn Fowler’s90-hectare,230-cowTePuke property.

NiamhMarkwastherunner-upin the2025BayofPlentyDairyManager category.

Fitzpatricksaidthatthroughtheawards programme,shewaspartofsomevaluable networkingandbuiltmoreconfidencein herselfandherabilitiesasafarmassistant.

The22-year-oldworksonDavidand LesleyJensen’s240ha,700-cowTauranga property.

Sheembracesthenewtechnologythat isavailableintheindustryandenjoys discoveringhowitcanbenefiton-farm systems.

Apassionfordairy

Sheholdsastrongpassionforthe dairyindustryandhascompletedNZ CertificateinAgricultureLevel3in farmingsystems,vehicles,machineryand infrastructureanddairyfarming,andis currentlystudyingtowardsDairyFarming Level4.

“Oneofbiggestchallengesisnothaving muchconfidenceinmyabilities,”she said.

“ThisisimprovingasIcontinuetopush myself,developnewskillsandbettermy problem-solvingabilities.”

Shethoughtmorelifeexperiencehelped hergoonebetteratthisyear’sawards.

“IdidjointheTePukeYoungFarmers

j justtoggetmyyselfouutthereand d to know morepeople,whichhelpedalot.”

Thisisherthirdseasonintheindustry, andsheisalsostudyingatToiOhomai.

“IalwayswantedtobeavetwhenI wasgrowingup,butdidn’tquitegetthe motivationtogetthere,thenIwanted totrysheepandbeefandwenttodoa cadetship,butdidn’tquitegetthrough,so IdecidedtotrytheToiOhomaicourse andendedupwiththisjobandhaven’t lookedback.”

Nextseason,shewillbecomesecondin chargeandhopeswithinfouryears,she willhavesteppeduptomanaging.

Awardsjudgingwasdoneatapractical dayoftasks,withthesixfinalistshaving sit-downinterviews.

Fitzpatrickwas“prettyshocked”when herwinwasannounced.“Thejudgesarea littlebitstone-faced,andyouneverreally knowhowwellyou’vedone.

“Itwasreallyexciting,especiallyhaving allmyfamilytherewithme—itwasvery special.”

Fitzpatrickwillpresent,alongwiththe othercategorywinners,attheBayof PlentyDairyIndustryAwardswinners fielddaynextMonday,April7,atthe OtamarakauValleyFarmpartlyowned byShareFarmersoftheYearAndreand NatalieMeier.

Dairymanagerrunner-upNiamhMark worksonPeterMark’s100ha,272-cow propertyatTePuke.

Shewasnamedrunner-upinthe2022 BayofPlentyDairyTraineecategory.

The27-year-oldholdsaBachelor ofAgriculturalSciencefromMassey UniversityandworkedforAssureQuality intheMycoplasmaBovisUnitbasedin Oamaruaftergraduating.

Sheidentifiedlivingwithdyslexia asachallenge,andsheisproudto havesuccessfully completedhr universitydegree andfurtherstudy.

“Dyslexiawill alwaysbeapart ofmylife,butI’ve learnttonavigate, whichhasbuiltmy confidence.”

Workingwith herfatheras herbosscanbe trickyattimes, distinguishing betweenherroleas hisdaughterandas anemployee.

w ere yo can get off farm,” o ng said “Oftenit’sjustyourselfandyourbosses onthefarmand,whenyou’vehadahard dayonthefarmandgohome,it’sjust you-youdon’treallyhaveanyoneelse.”

Nationalfinals

Allthecategorywinners,including Fitzpatrick,willprogressthroughtothe nationalfinalstobeheldatMercury ArenaBayparkinMay,andTePuke YoungFarmerschairwomanShanice Youngsaidsheandtheclubweretrying togiveherasmuchsupportaspossible.

TePukeYoungFarmershasseena growthinmembershipsince2022,from therebeinglittlemorethanasmall committeetowellover30members.

Oneofthereasonsforthatwastheclub beingopenedtoallsectors,including horticultureandforestry.

“Mymainmotiveoftheclubismaking agroupthat’slike-minded,havingaplace

Agoodproportion ofmemberswere fromoutsidethearea –withsomefrom overseas.

“Alotofthem havemovedaway fromfamily–andI knowwhatthat’slike becauseI’moneofthosepeople–butI amtryingtojustbuildtheclubup–it’s likeafamily,weareallcloseandifthey haveproblemsknowtheycancometo theclubwiththeirproblemsandstill beaccepted,eveniftheyarenotfeeling OK.”

Communityhelp

Oneregularactivitywashelpingfarmers covertheirsilagestacks,whichcreates bondsandbuildsconnectionswiththe farmingcommunity.

Sponsorshiphelpspayforeventsand activitiesandalsomeansmemberscanget rewardsdeals,andgetmembersoutinto thecommunity.

It’sbeenapre-season ofuncertaintyfor TePukeUnited.

Lastseason,theclub’spremier sideplayedintheWaiBoP LeagueOnethatincludedteams acrossboththeWaikatoandBay ofPlentyregions.

Thisseason,thatsameleague wastohavecontinuedandin Februarytherewere10teams whowouldhavebeeninvolved.

However,thewithdrawaloffour meanttheleaguewasnolonger viable,sotheremainingsixteams –includingTePuke–havebeen putintoregionalleagues.

TePukewillplayintheBay ofPlentySeniorMen’sLeague DivisionOne–thedivisionthey wonin2023.

“Hopefully,theinterestfrom theclubsreturnsin2026to allowustobringWaiBoP LeagueOneback,”saidWaiBoP communicationsmanager DwayneBarlow.

ForTePuke’snewcoachAaron Ashton,ithasmeantadisrupted pre-seasonandaswitchinthe playingstyleshewasinstillingin hischarges.

Ashtonsaidinpreparingfor thetougherLeagueOne,he hadbeenplanningonplayinga defensive-focusedsystem.

Playingstyle

“We’vegonebacktoa4:2:3:1. Wewereplayingfiveatthe

TePukeUtdarebackintheBayofPlentySeniorMen’sLeagueDivisionOne–adivisiontheywonin2023.

Whiledisruptive,Ashtonsaid goingbacktosomethingcloser tolastseason’sstylehasn’tbeen toodifficultwithacoreofplayers returningfromlastseason, alongsidesomenewfaces.

Amongthemarelastyear’s player-coachTomSkerten,who willbevice-captain,returning captainCameronRiley,Alex Johnson,ShaunBelland MohdeepSodhi.Afteraseason away,forwardNickJohnsonis alsoback.

“Wearelookingatasquad ofabout19sothere’sgood competitionforplaces.

“Themorale’squitehighinthe squadandtheboysarelooking forwardtothisyear.We’vegot agoodcoreandagoodspinein thatfirstteam,whichisgoodand lookingpromising.”

Resultsinpre-seasongames haven’talwaysgoneTePuke’s way,butAshton’shappywiththe waytheteamhasbeenplaying.

“We’vegotafewkeyplayers stillplayingcricket,sowe didn’thavethem,buttheteam’s

lookingverystrong.”

Hesaid“withoutadoubt”the goalwastorepeatthetitlewinningsuccessof2023.

“Bythelooksofit,weare goingtobeoneofthemore competitiveteamsintheleague, butwecan’tletthatgotoour heads,we’vestillgottogoout andputintheeffort.

Changingpositions

Ashtonwasaformerplayerwith theclub’sreserveteambuthad beenawayforatime.

“Ijustdecidedtogointothe

management.Theclubideally neededsomeone,andIdecided fortheclub,myrolewouldbe betterasacoachratherthana player.”

Theclub’sreservegradeside willplayintheSeniorMens’Bay Twoleagueandtherearehopesof fieldingtwowomen’steams. Thefirstteamopenstheirseason atLittParkonSaturdaywitha gameagainstTauranga’sWaipuna Rangers(kickoff1pm)whilethe reservestraveltoŌhope’sBluett Parkfora2.30pmgame.
