Changesareafootforthisyear’s KatikatiFestivalofCulturesflag paradeandfestivitiestomorrow.

Thefestival,nowinitsfourthyear,has introducedseveralchangestocaterforthe event’sgrowingpopularity.Thebiggest changehasbeenthevenue.

CommitteememberKylieWatkinssaid they’veoutgrowntheirprevioushomeat KatikatiWarMemorialHall.

“Wewantedtoworkwithcouncilto highlightaparadepaththatleadsinto abiggerspacetoaccommodatemore culturalstallholders,performances, activitiesandmorepeople.”

KatikatiFestivalofCulturesbeginswith theflagparadeofnationalitiesstarting fromKatikatiCollegeandmakesitsway alongCarisbrookeSttoMoorePark. AtMooreParktherewillbeapowhiri, followedbyculturalperformances, interactiveworkshops,artsandcraftsstalls andinternationalfood.Previouslytheflag paradestartedfromtheparktomemorial hallwherethefestivitiestookplace.

‘Powderthrow’

Thefestivalboastsmorethan30 foodvendorsthisyeareachofferingan experience,beitculinary,workshopor performance.

“Wereallywantedtohighlightthe diversitywithinourcommunity,soyou’ll findeverythingfromtraditionalMāori kaitoflavoursfromthePacificIslands, France,Philippines,China,Thailand, Nepal,Indiaandmore,”Watkinssaid.

There’salsotheHoli-inspired“powder throw”wherebrightlycolouredpowder

willbethrownwhichsymbolisesunity, joyandnewbeginnings.

WesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncil willhosttheeventonWednesday,April 9,atTheCentre-PātukiManawa DigitalHubfrom7pm-9pm,providing anopportunityforpeopletoconnect withwardcouncillorsAllanSole,Anne HenryandRodneyJoyce,andtogeta betterunderstandingoflocalinitiatives bytalkingtotheteamsbehindthem.

Projects

Otherprojectstoexploreattheevent includeimprovementstotheDave HumePoolandthereplacementof AthenreeJetty.

Thedistrictcouncilwillalsobesharing informationandinvitingfeedback onthefutureofwaterservicesinthe

district,aspartoftheLocalWaterDone Wellreform.

Thisisachanceforpeopleto understandtheoptions,askquestions andhelpshapethebestpathforward,a statementfromthecouncilsaid.

Therewillbeinformationtohandout onkerbsiderecycling,communitygrants andemergencymanagement–withthe chancetoexperienceanaturalhazard simulationthroughVRgoggles.

Communityforums

Thecouncilfirstintroduced CommunityForumsin2023asa wayforpeopletomeettheirlocal representativesinaninformalsetting.

Anexpo-styleformatwastrialledlast yearinTePukewherepeoplecould exploreprojecthubsaroundtheroom. Theformatprovedsuccessfuland valuablefeedbackwasreceivedfromthe community,andisnowbeingrolledout acrossthedistrict.

CouncillorAllanSoleencouraged peopletoattendtheevent,whichwasa valuableopportunitytostayinformed aboutlocalprojects.

Ahuntingandfishingcompetition justforchildrenwilltakeplace nextweekend.

ScottandSarah A AdamsonfromAongatete andafewoftheirfriends lovehunting,andtheir kidsdotoo.They’ve decidedtostartahunting eventforyoung ones.

“Wejust w wantedtohave somecompetition amongstfriendsandthen thoughtwemightgetthe community involvedaswelland italljustfellintoplace.Our kidsloveoutdoorsandweall enjoyseeingthemlightup,”said Sarah.

TheKidsHuntingandFishing CompetitionisonfromApril 11-13forages13andunder. Onthehuntin si eofthe

competitionispossums,rabbits,hares andmagpies(prizeforthemostmagpies) andfishingincludessnapper,ka awai, trevally,Kingfishandspotty and piper.

Sincekerbsiderecyclingbinswere introducedinJuly2021,thenumber ofvehiclesvisitingtherecycling centrehasfallenfrom1700a month,tolessthan500.Greenwaste visitshaveremainedsteadyatan averageof150vehiclesamonth. Recyclinghabits

“Aswecontinuetoexpandour kerbsidecollectionserviceacross therohe(district),weexpectthis trendtocontinue,withfewer peopleneedingtovisitrecycling centres.Thiswillhelpstreamline ourservicesandensurewe’re meetingtheevolvingneedsofour community.”

Ameetingwasheldlastmonthtodiscuss thenewtrustandintroducetheproject.

ThetrustinvitedClusterNavigators chiefexecutiveandfounderIforFfowcsWilliamstotalkaboutthebenefitof clusterdevelopments.ClusterNavigators hasdevelopedeconomicclustergroupsin morethan50countries.

Katikatilocalsarebeingencouraged torolluptheirsleevestohelptackle problematicpestplantsatafree, hands-onworkshopthisweekend.

“Wewantpeopletobeabletorecognise theseplantsintheirownbackyardsearly sotheydon’tbecomeamajorproblem,” saidSharonStrong,thecoordinatorof RenaturingKatikati,whichistheurban armofProjectParore.“Thesoonerwecan removethem,themorecost-effectiveand manageableitis.”

Participantswilllearnaboutidentifying pestplantsanddifferentcontroltechniques.

“Somecanbehand-pulled,whileothers requiretoolsliketheextractigator,which leversoutstubbornplantslikeprivetand Taiwancherry.Ifthat’snotpossible,then wemayneedtouseherbicides.Forlarger trees,wemighthavetodrillandfillwith chemicals,andifthey’renearawalkway, anarboristmightberequired,”explained Strong.

Thegoalistogivelocalstheknowledgeto managetheirownpropertiesfirstandthen toconsiderjoiningvolunteerswhotackle reservesandcommunityspaces.

“Asacommunity,wecanmakeabig differenceinsuchashortspaceoftime,”said Strong.“Somepestplantssuffocatenative seedlings,whileothersreplacefoodsources forbirds.”

ArecentwalkthroughofWaterfordReserve highlightedtheproblem.

“Icounted15nativeplants,but20nonnativespecieshadcreptinduetoalackof

management.BayofPlentyisknownforits greatgrowingconditions,whichmeanspest plantsthriveandwithoutaction,they’lltake over,”shesaid.“We’veallcontributedtothe problem,sometimesunknowingly,bybuying plantsfromgardencentresthatendupin ourreserves.Weallhavearoletoplayinthe solution.”

Volunteersarealreadymakingadramatic difference.

“Evendedicatingjustfiveminutesaday oranhouraweekcanhaveahugeimpact. Volunteersareeliminatingtheseplants,and theirworkiscrucial.Infact,80%ofthe mahiwedoisfocusedonpestplantremoval -that’showbigaproblemitis.”

Strongadmitswhenshestartedinherrole fouryearsago,sheimaginedanimalpeststo bethefocus.

“Pestplantsweren’thighonmyradar,but I’vecometorealisethey’reamajorthreatto ourecosystem,”shesaid.“Pestplantscan smotherandsuffocateournativebushin coastalareas,walkways,andreserves.”

Thescaleoftheissuecanfeel overwhelming,soStrongadvisestakinga methodicalapproachorjoiningforceswith neighbours.

“Prioritiseplantsthathaveflowersorseeds topreventfurtherspread,andtackleone plantatatime.It’saboutpreservingour naturalspacesforfuturegenerations.”
