BayofPlentyRegionalCouncil complianceteamleader(air, industryandresponse)Trudy Richardssaidthecouncil’s biosecurityteam“requiredthe landownertomanagethepest plantwoollynightshadeon thisproperty”.
Italsorecommendedtheuse ofalocalUAV–an Unmanned AerialVehicle –operatorfor “targetedandcost-effective control”ofthispestonthis property,saidRichards.

Onset

“It’sactuallyreallyfun,working outside,bouncingaroundthehill countryonquadbikes,evenmucking inandhelpingoccasionally.
“Theshowissimplestorytelling withnogimmicksortricks.Wetryto representpeopletruthfullyandgettothe heartoftheirrelationshipwiththeland.”
Challengesonlocation
Filmingisatthemercyofthe weather,technicalchallengesand timeframes.Whilepeopleare waterproof,thegearisn’tandRozis oftenseenholdinganumbrellaover thecameraandcameraoperator.

Thefirst1400treeswere planted in2013.Duringthefirstfiveyears,
thehazelnuttreeswerefedseaweed, andtheorchardwasconstantly mowedusingamulchingmower.

The2020Covid-19lockdown coincidedwithharvesttime,so thefamilyallstayedhomeand pitchedin.
Adecisionwasmadein2019 tostarttheprocessofcertifying theorganicorchard.Theorchard becamefullycertifiedorganicwith BioGroinFebruary2022along withfoodsafetycertification.
Workingwithintheorganicguidelines, weedmatwaslaidundersometreesas atrialtohelpcontrolgrassandweed growth.Thishasreducedtheamountof mowingrequiredandhashelpedwith harvesting.Prolificsuckergrowthisstill controlledwithregulartrimming.
Thehazelnutcalendar
Seaweedisfedingranularformin springalongthedriplinesofthetrees. Summerisspentkeepingontopofthe mowingandkeepingtheorchardfloor cleanandreadyforharvest.

Limeandgypsumareevaporites, formedmillionsofyearsagobythe evaporationofseawaterhighin
calciumintolayersofsedimentary rock.Today,theyarebothmined, althoughgypsumisalsosourced fromcoalburningpowerstationsasa byproductoffluegasdesulphurisation.
