Fitzgibbonsisalong-standing memberoftheBayofPlentyOrchid Societywhichisholdingitsannual showinTePukeonApril4-5.
“Mostpeoplethinkofcymbidiums asorchids,whichtheyare,butthere arelotsofotherstooandIgofor miniatureones,”Fitzgibbonssaid.
Hercollectionismadeupofmainly, butnotonly,tinyspecies.“I’mknown forsmallones.Forsomeyouneeda magnifyingglass,buttheyarecute–wellIthinktheyarecute,somepeople won’tagree,buttheyhavecharacter, theyreallydo.”
Shapeandsurvival Fitzgibbonsusedtohavemorelarger orchidsbuthascutdownbecause theyarenowtoobigforherto handle.Shesaidtheattractionofthe plantsistheirshapeandthechallenge ofkeepingthemalive,somethingshe seemedtomanagewithease.
Sheoftenhasasurpluswhichshe sellsatthesociety’sshow.
Manyhavebeengrownfromyoung plantsimportedintoNewZealandin flasks,withgrowingthemonanother challengefortheorchidgrower.
Fitzgibbonswasfirstintroducedto orchidswhenaworkfriendgaveher sixdifferentones.
“Mygrandmotherwasintoflowers,
soIsupposeIpickeditupfromher.”
Shewasinitiallygrowingcymbidiumsand cattleya.“Mymother’sneighbourswere goingtoa[BOPOrchidSociety]meeting andaskedmeifIwantedtogoandI’ve beengoingeversince.”
Thatwasin1979.“Theyareagoodgroup ofpeople.”
Whenthesocietystarteditsshow,it selectedanautumndateastherewereno othersatthetimeofyear.
Two-dayshow
Itprovedtobeagoodmoveandtheshow quicklybecamepopular.
FitzgibbonsisalsoaregularattheNew ZealandOrchidSocietyconferences,first
attendingin1985.“Youmeetpeople,talkto them,swaporscroungewhateveryoucan.”
Shealsogrowstillandsiaandother bromeliads,andsaidtheairplantsgrow wellwithorchids.
Thisyear’sshowwillfollowatriedand testedformula,runningacrosstwodays andfeaturingsalestables,growersfrom AucklandandNapier,displaysandsales ofotherplants,suchashoyas,andpots. Societymemberswillbeavailabletooffer adviceongrowingandmaintaining healthyorchids.
Theshowisopen10am-4pmonApril 4and10am-3pmonApril5atTePuke MemorialHall.Entryis$3foradults.

Theseriescomprisesonedayeventswheredriversand co-driversnegotiateanumber ofhazards.Eacheventhas overallpointsandclasswinners FogdenandGibbonsarechasing theirfifthtitleinthesport’s second-tierCClass,butafter adisappointingstarttothe season,neededawininSunday’s penultimateroundofthesixroundseries.

class,finishingfourthoverall.
“Wehadareallygoodday,we justmadeacoupleoflittleerrors butnothingthatwastoocostly,” saidFogden.
“Butyou’vegottotakeyour hatoffto[TowersandHadland] –theywerebattlingissueswith thetruckalldayandtheygot itbackon,andtheresultthey needed,socongratstothem.
“Thatwillmakeitpretty difficultforustowintheNew Zealandtitlenow.”
Inthepremierandmost popularDClass,itwasJarred BiggsandFletcheCrawford whotookthehonoursmakingit back-to-backwinsintheseries.
TheChrisGifford/Sam Thomsencombinationwas second,andnationalchampion ScottBiggs,withco-driverPhilip Walton,inthird.

Bupahasandiscontinuingtowork withresidentsatitsTePukeCare Homewhowillhavetomovedueto thefacility’sredevelopment.
Lastweek,BupaVillagesandAgeCare announceda$17millionredevelopment forthecarehome.Atthetimeofthe announcementtherewere70residents livingatthehome.
TePukeRetirementVillageandCare HomegeneralmanagerTraceyAlderton saidbecausetheredevelopmentwilltake atleast18months,resthomeresidents havebeenencouragedtoseeanymoveas beingpermanent.
“Wewantthemtosettlewellwherever theyare.However,neversaynever,[and] ifin18monthsthereisaroomavailable andcircumstancesalignsotheycanand wouldliketocomeback,wewouldlove tohavethem.”
Themajorityofresidentshaveeither movedorhaveplanstomovetoanew home.Somearestayinglocal,severalhave selectedotherBupalocationsintheregion
andsomeresidentshaveeventakenthe opportunitytomovefurtherafieldtobe closertofamily,Aldertonsaid.
“Wedeliberatelygaveourresidentsas muchnoticeaspossible,sotherewasno pressuretofindanewhomeandthey couldgoonwaitlistsoncetheyselected wheretheywantedtogo.Staffareworking closelywithfamiliesandtheDHBto findalternativeoptionsandsupporting residentsmoveinanywaythatisrequired.
“Myresidentsandstaffhavebeen amazing.It’sbeensadtoseepeople leave,andwe’veallfeltit,buteveryone understandsthatitisnecessary,because thebuildinghassimplyreachedtheend ofitsusefulness.”
Bupa’sdirectorofpropertyRichard StephensonsaidtheinvestmentinBupa TePukestrengthensBupa’spresencein thecommunityandprovidesitsresidents withamodernandcomfortablehomethat matchesthehighstandardofcaredelivered byBupa’speople.
“WehavestrongrootsinTePukeandare committedtocontinueprovidingcareand
FogdensaidSunday’seventhad fantasticsupportfromthelocal communityaswellaslocal businessesandnamingsponsor BFGoodrichTires.

HostedbytheBayofPlenty FourWheelDriveclub,asmall teamthatworksveryhardto stagetheevent,withmany ofthemputtinginahuge amountofworkinthelead-up andthenbeingon-siteuntil lastonSundaystartingwith theclean-up.“That’sallinthe backgroundthatnobodysees,” saidFogden.

Aldertonsaidtheresultoftheprojectwill beacontemporaryvillageandcarehome thatofferscurrentandnewresidentsa greatplacetoliveandbecaredforherein theheartofTePuke.
“Thecurrentresthomecommunity residesintheoldmotel,butitwasnever intendedtobeanagedcarefacility,” Aldertonsaid.
“Duetostructurallimitationsand theageofthebuilding,we’vemadethe toughdecisiontodemolishthebuilding andfocusallourcareofferingintoone building.
“It’ssadtoseetheoldmotelgo,butthe realityisthatwhileithadperformedwell uptonow,inthelongtermit’snotof astandardwewantforourcurrentand futureresidents.”

Forthepastthreeyears,the centrehasdevelopedamaara kai(foodgarden)thatincludes vegetablebedswithawide rangeofplantsandakiwifruit vine,providinganoutdoor classroomforchildrenatthe earlylearningcentre. Childrenlearnabout sustainablepracticesfor growing,harvestingand cooking.Thegardenisa resourcenotjustforthechildren andteachersatthecentre,but forthewholecommunityand isavenueforworkshopsand thesourceoffreshfruitand vegetablesthatissharedwith whānauandthroughvarious
patakakaiwiththecommunity.
