ThenewWaihīBeach libraryandcommunity hubhasreachedakey milestonewiththepouring ofitsconcretefloor.

WesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncillors,Waihī BeachCommunityBoard members,andWaihīBeach CommunityCentrecommittee memberswereonsiteto witnessthepour,celebrating thestrongpartnershipthat continuestoshapethis importantcommunityfacility.

“Pouringtheconcretefloor isalwaysanexcitingmoment –it’sthepointwhereavision startstobecomeaphysical reality.Thismarksasolid foundation,notjustforthe building,butforaspacethat willbringthecommunity togetherforyearstocome,” saidcouncil’sgeneralmanager infrastructuregroupCedric

Crow.Positiveprogresshas beenmadetodate,withthe $5.5millionbuildingon budgetandontracktoopen byJuly,saidCrow.

Newsharedservices

Thenewfacilityisbeing builtinfrontoftheexisting libraryandcommunity centre,providingan opportunitytocreateanew sharedservicesmodelthat wouldgivetheWaihīBeach communityaccesstoservices thatareotherwisenotoffered locally,andupgradethe existingfacilitiesofferedby thecommunitycentre.

Thisintegratedapproach ensuresboththenewand existingfacilitiesworktogether toservethecommunitymore effectively.

Oncecompleted,the developmentwilloffer increasedaccessibilityand awiderangeofamenities,

includingmulti-functional spacesandadditionalmeeting rooms,benefitingbothlibrary usersandcommunitygroups.

Collaborative

Acollaborativeapproach continuestobekeyincreating spacesthatmeettheneeds ofagrowinganddiverse community,saidCrow.

“We’veworkedcloselywith theWaihīBeachCommunity CentreCommittee throughout,tomakesure therenovationsandupgrades totheirfacilityareasuccess. Thispartnershiphasbeen invaluableinensuringtheir spaceremainsakeyassetfor thecommunity.

TheEchoWalkingFestivalhas steppedupitspresenceintheregion andoffersupseveralnewWestern BayofPlentywalkingevents thisyear.

TheEchoWalkingFestivalisorganised bytownpromotersinthedistrictwiththe aimofgettingpeopleenjoyingthegreat outdoors,appreciatingthebeautyofthe regionandstayingactive.

Thereare45walks(gradesonetofive) andoutdoorexperiencesacrosstheregion whichspansfromKaimaiRangetothe Coromandel.

HerbAwarenessMonthinNew Zealandisanannualinitiative whichpromotestheeducational andhealthbenefitsofherbs.This yearthefocusisonchamomile, karamu,greatercelandineand globeartichoke.

TheInternationalHerb Associationselectsaherbofthe yearandtheirsischamomile matricariachamomilla.TheHerb FederationofNewZealandthen selectsthenotherthree.

Thelocalherbgrouprecentlyhad ameetingtoshinealightonthese herbs.

Chamomile

Chamomileisawell-knownaid forrestfulsleepingandcalming qualities.Fromthedaisyfamily, itboastsotherbenefitsrelated tothenervoussystemincluding digestivehealth.KatikatiHerb SocietypresidentJennyAger-Pratt callsita“goodgutherb”forthe nervoussysteminreducingstress.

Otherusesofchamomilearefor thecommoncoldandtosooth respiratorydisorders.

Karamu

Anativeshrubtraditionallyused byearlyMāoriforitsmedicinaland spiritualsignificance.Itisbelieved bysometohavepropertiestohelp inflammation,bladderandkidney problemsandstomachupsets.

Theherbispraisedforitslivercleansingpropertiesaidingdigestive problemssuchasgastroenteritis, constipation,irritablebowel syndromeandliverandgallbladder disorders.

“Peoplearebecomingmore awareofthepowerofherbsin supportingtheirhealth,”shesaid. “They’rethinkingwhattheycando naturallyandinahealthierwayfor themselves,peoplearetakingmore responsibilityfortheirownhealth.” Withthecostofgroceries,many arealsoturningtogrowingherbs andvegetablesthemselves,AgerPrattsaid.

KatikatiHerbSocietymeetsevery secondWednesdayofthemonth totalkabouttheidentification, cultivationanduseofherbsin culinary,nutritional,health,firstaid, homeremediesandcrafts. Theyhaveguestspeakers,garden tips,demonstrationsandworkshops attheirmeetingswhichareatSt Paul’sPresbyterianChurchlounge at7pm.Meetingsareopentothe public.

KatikatiFestivalofCulturesreturnswithextendedflagparade

TheKatikatiFestivalofCultures returnsonApril5,tocelebrate thediverseculturesthatcall KatikatiandthewiderWestern BayofPlentyhome.

Thefestival,partoftheFlavoursof PlentyFestival,willkickoffwiththe much-anticipatedflagparadeat10am, startingfromKatikatiCollegeand proceedingalongCarisbrookeStto MoorePark.Thiscolourfuldisplaywill featureparticipantsfromawiderangeof culturalbackgrounds,showcasingtheir heritagethroughnationalflags,musicand traditionalclothing.

UponarrivalatMoorePark,awhakatau (aMāoriwelcomeceremonythat acknowledgespeople,relationshipsor events)willofficiallyopenthefestivities, settingthestageforanexcitingdayahead.

From11amto2pm,MoorePark willtransformintoahubofcultural

expression,offeringarichprogrammeof liveperformances,interactiveworkshops, artsandcraftsstallsandfoodvendors offeringflavoursfromaroundtheworld andmuchmore.

Waihī’s111challengeforanewambulancestation

HatoHoneStJohnis encouragingWaihīlocalsto takepartina111fundraising challengetoraisemoneyfora newambulancestationinthe township.

“Thereplacementoftheold stationhasbeenplannedfor sometime.Itwasbuiltinthe 1970sandwasnolongerfitfor purposeasitdidn’tmeetmodern earthquake standards,” HHStJgroup operations manager Coromandel South/Central WestJuliaTe Huiasaid.

TeHuia saidthe construction ofthenew JohnstonStstation,whichbegan inJanuary,isprogressingwell.
