A wolf in wolfs clothing By the look of things, 2019 is shaping up to be a great year for Kia. This year’s models are the most mature I’ve driven, and there’s no question that Kia is now a fierce competitor in its market segments. The MY19 Cerato confirms this. Refined, reliable, high tech and a real looker, this is easily the best Cerato yet. Powered by a two-litre petrol engine and mated with a six-speed auto, there’s power, fuel efficiency and smoothness all wrapped up with a bow. Two models will be available in the Cerato range – the LX and the EX. The LX is anything but ‘entry level’, with assets that rival some high spec competitors. The EX is the more luxurious model, with leather composite seats, extra safety features and some sportier styling options. Tauranga Motor Company is one of the lucky dealers to have a new Cerato available to take for a spin, so that’s exactly what I did. Our test model is the Cerato EX, and I’m sure that stands for ‘extra’ special. From the outset, the new Cerato is visually very different from its predecessor. A sportier, aggressive styling makes it a stand out - rather than a blend in - type of car. The LX comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, while the EX gets even bigger boots via 17-inch alloys. Similarly, the inside of the Cerato is grown up. For a car of the mid-sized segment, it is almost executive in its look and feel. Space is certainly no issue either. The cabin

feels incredibly spacious, and the boot is almost as big as space itself, less a few stars and the deadly radiation of course. Not only is it spacious, the Cerato is incredibly comfortable and could pass for a GT without a problem. Space front and back, highly adjustable driving positions and, in the EX, a beautifully supple leather-wrapped steering wheel all add to the feel of the car. In both the LX and EX, you get all the toys built in to the infotainment system. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and reversing cameras are all served up on a crisp, clear 8-inch display. There’s Bluetooth phone pairing and a sat-nav too. Most of those can be controlled by voice or via steering wheel, so there’s no excuse to take your eyes off the road – not that there’s ever a good reason to do that! The front seat driver and passenger also benefit from three-way heated seats, for those nippy days that insist on coming around once a year. There’s USB and AUX ports, so you can bang out your favourite tunes through the Cerato’s sound system if that’s your bag. The new Cerato is yet another car in Kia’s line-up with the coveted five-star ANCAP safety rating. The Cerato boasts electronic stability control, blind spot detection, lane keep assist, forward collision warning and rear cross traffic alerts. And let’s not forget Autonomous Emergency Braking. Hopefully this is not something you will ever need to use, but it is a huge benefit in terms of avoiding accidents. Out on the road, you’ll be more than happy with your purchase. The two-litre engine is a

match for the car, with a spirited take off when required and a relaxed cruiser for coasting along the highways. It’s also pretty economical for the size of the engine and car, coming in at 7.4l/100km combined fuel consumption. Agility around town is no issue. Even though the Cerato is well proportioned, the assistive cameras and collision detection alarms make parking a doddle. Steering is also highly responsive, so there’s no issue moving around those twisty inner streets. Price wise, once again Kia gives you a lot of car for your money. The LX has an SRRP of $27,990 + ORC (RRP $31,990 + ORC) and the EX is a snip at an SRRP of only $29,990 + ORC (RRP $35,990 + ORC). Both models come with three years’ free servicing, a five-year/100,000km warranty and five years’ roadside assist.

Although the Cerato is coming soon, Tauranga Motor Company on Cameron Road already have a lovely red EX for you to test drive so you can get your order in nice and early ready for delivery. If you can spare the extra pennies, the EX model is certainly the one to go for with its additional refinements, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be perfectly happy with the LX. Of course, Tauranga Motor Company can also deal with your finance requirements, and even take your old car as a trade in. Once you do trade in, you won’t look back. Jay Burston Model: Cerato EX Engine: 2.0 litre petro l Transmission: 6-speed automatic Price: SRRP of only $2 9,9 (RRP $31,990 + ORC) 90 + ORC

Take care of your car battery

New Zealanders need to get into the habit of regularly checking their car batteries, according to insurers State. The data comes from State Roadside Assistance, who responded to almost 1300 callouts across Aotearoa over the two-week Christmas and New Year period. Some 45 per cent of all call outs over the break related to the vehicle’s battery. Among the most common issues, 67 call outs were due to batteries being too old to retain charge, 49 call outs were due to batteries needing replacement and 454 call outs related to batteries that needed a jump start due to lights and electrics being left on too long or other electrical issues. “Batteries are definitely the reason most people call up for assistance,” says State’s Sean Craigen. “When so many people are travelling around the country for day trips to the beach or campsites, the state of the car may be last on the priority list. “Batteries can have issues for a number of different reasons. It might be that your battery is old or drained due to GPS or applications using the charge. “There’s also the chance that the good old

lights were left on or the doors left open. “Lastly, it could be that the vehicle has been sitting for a period of time and the battery no longer has enough power in it to start the engine. “The good thing is that, generally, most batteries carry warranties of up to three years, so we encourage vehicle owners to take advantage of this and get a check-up or a new one fitted before hitting the road.” Tyres were also a problem for many drivers with, with 57 call outs for help with tyre punctures, blow outs or damage. Elsewhere, 87 drivers needed assistance to replace a tyre or change their tyre for the spare. There were six unlucky drivers who had two flat tyres at once. Broken cambelts, overheated or flooded engines, faulty ignition switches, locked steering wheels and 100 pairs of key being accidently locked inside vehicles were some of the remaining reasons State’s roadside rescue teams were kept busy over the break. Sean also recommended vehicle owners check they have a compliant spare tyre in the boot which is inflated to the recommended level, and make sure all lights and electrics are off when the car is not in use to avoid draining the battery.

Toll road prices set to increase Toll prices on State Highway 2 and State Highway 29 will increase on March 1 this year. Tolls on the Tauranga Eastern Link, State Highway 2, will rise by 10 cents to $2.10 for cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles. An increase of 20 cents, to $5.20, will be enforced for heavy commercial vehicles. Tolls on the Takitimu Drive toll road on State Highway 29, will also increase by 10 cents to $1.90 for cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles and 20 cents to $5 for heavy commercial vehicles. NZ Transport Agency regional transport systems manager Rob Campbell says the toll increase has been kept to a minimum and is necessary to respond to inflation and ensure the toll road remains on track to repay debt as planned.

“The legislation covering the road toll allows for the tolls to be annually adjusted in line with increases in the Consumer Price Index,” says Rob. “The tolls were last increased in 2015.” The Tauranga Eastern Link is a 15km section of SH2 between Paengaroa and Papamoa which provides road users with a shorter, quicker option to its free alternative, the Te Puke Highway. The Takitimu Drive Toll Road, formerly known as Route K Toll Road, is a 5km road that bypasses Tauranga city centre and takes traffic from SH29 to SH2 in the direction of the Port of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. The alternative routes are via Cameron Road or Cambridge/ Moffat Roads. For more information about tolling, visit: www.nzta.govt.nz/tollroads

Motorists who use the toll roads in Tauranga are set for a price increase.

New tech could limit distracted drivers New technology able to capture images of drivers using mobile phones could help reduce the number of fatalities on New Zealand’s roads, according to an industry expert. The world-first mobile phone detection cameras were recently installed around Sydney following a successful trial in October, which caught more than 11,000 drivers using their phones behind the wheel. The cameras are capable of catching drivers using their phones even at night, in poor weather conditions or at very high speeds. Volvo’s New Zealand general manager, Coby Duggan, says diverted attention on our roads is also a significant issue in this country. New Zealand police figures show up to 2900 tickets are issued each month to drivers using mobile devices while driving. He says the latest Ministry of Transport research shows that drivers engaged in text messaging are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than those focused on the road. Coby says the Ministry’s data also shows that for every 100 New Zealand drivers or riders who died in road crashes where diverted attention was a contributing factor, 85 passengers and another 100 road users also lost their lives. “Distracted driving is a contributing factor in around eight per cent of fatal crashes in this

country,” says Coby. “In fact, mobile phone use while driving has become so prevalent, most of us will witness it during our daily commute. “As a country we need to take advantage of the latest technology and innovations to help prevent needless loss of life. “The relative efficiency of a stationary camera system would raise awareness and act as a deterrent for motorists, making our roads safer for all users.” Duggan says Volvo’s US research released last year found that, contrary to popular belief, older, Generation X drivers are more likely to use their phone while driving than Millennials. He says the Volvo survey also showed that respondents felt there were more driving distractions now than five years ago. “Fifty five percent of those surveyed said they believed the biggest issue in road safety was not in fact driving under the influence (31 per cent) but rather distracted driving,” he says. He adds that distracted driving affects all road users, including pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, and is not limited to any particular generation. “Car companies such as Volvo are helping to address emerging driving issues in the digital age by increasing on-board safety features to reduce distraction and avoid collisions.”

Cooper reclaims MXGP crown Nobody had an answer for the Bay of Plenty’s Cody Cooper at the Honda New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville last weekend. The 58th annual running of the iconic motocross, at the eastern end of the Manawatu Gorge, once again attracted the cream of talent from New Zealand and Australia, but Honda rider Cooper was determined to be the man to stand on top of the podium once more. With gale force winds and constant drizzle threatening to ruin an otherwise perfect event, organisers were forced to scale back the race programme, allowing only two races for each class, rather than the traditional three. But this was of little concern to 35-year-old Cooper, who convincingly won both the premier MX1 races on Sunday. He also won the event outright, making it three times that he has claimed the top trophy. The Mount Maunganui rider had previously won the coveted Woodville GP trophy in 2007 before repeating the feat in 2014. Runner-up to Cooper was visiting Australian Kirk Gibbs, with Taupo’s Cohen Chase rounding out the MX1 podium. “I didn’t realise that the Woodville trophy would not be a stand-alone, separate race this year and it all hinged on me winning the MX1 class,” says Cooper. “That meant I really needed to win both MX1 races. “So it didn’t really matter that I won the first race if I didn’t win the second one, because I could lose out on the count-back rule. That’s why I pushed pretty hard at the start of race two, to open up a gap over Gibbs and the others. I felt quite comfortable. “It seemed we were actually going at quite a slow pace until about halfway through the race, when Gibbs tried to come at me. So I put some heaters (fast laps) down and pulled away again, and I think he gave up after that. “I just need to keep doing what I’m doing for the nationals now.” Cooper is in the midst of a golden run at the moment.

Photo: Andy McGechan/ BikesportNZ.com

Since returning from the United States at the end of August, where he managed 11th overall in the 2018 National Motocross Championship series, Cooper has won the MX1 class at the Waikato Motocross Championships and dominated the MX1 class at the annual Honda Whakatane Summercross just after Christmas. Just a week before the Woodville GP, Cooper had ruled the MX1 roost at the annual King of the Mountain Motocross in Taranaki - the same venue that will host the opening round of the nationals next weekend. His MX1 class and GP trophy wins at Woodville have only further emphasised his readiness for the four-round New Zealand Motocross Championships. The six-time former New Zealand MX1 champion had to give up his national title to Aussie invader Gibbs last season, with Cooper settling for second overall in the 2018 nationals. But his dominance over Gibbs at Woodville, and the rest of New Zealand’s elite 450cc riders, must surely make him the firm favourite to win back the number one plate this year.
