The car for all occasions Subaru Forester
The Subaru Forester has long been the car for the moment. The hero of the hour. If it was a rugby position, it would be a hard working loose forward that turns up everywhere and saves the day. The latest version of the Forester doesn’t disappoint and is loaded with features to keep you safe and get you to your destination, wherever that may be. When you need a vehicle that can handle pretty much anything, this is it. High enough to get over most bumps, low enough to cling to the road like a limpet. Roomy enough to take five people and all their luggage.
direct injection, horizontally opposed Boxer, 4-cylinder petrol engine. It is nicely balanced and has a lower centre of gravity, reducing roll. The differences between the models is not huge and this is reflected in the small price graduations. I took the premium model for this review, although the photos here relate to the Sport Plus.
Attitude on a rocky road
Out on the road, I was immediately lucky enough to get a red light, so tuned the radio using the big touch screen and the steering wheel controls. The sounds are worth mentioning because they come from a Harman Kardon system with nine speakers – boom. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto too. The right balance I cruise slowly past Bayfair, gazing at what There are three models; the 2.5l Sport, 2.5l I always thought were roadworks. ‘Barriers Sport Plus and 2.5l Premium. They share on a Lumpy Road’ is actually a permanent, the same chassis, transmission and engine - a sculptural representation of the futility of life. Tauranga leads the way with these kinds of modern art installations. Finally, on the motorway, the active cruise control gets some action. Let’s say, for argument’s sake, you like to cruise at 100km/h. m miu Forester Pre , horizontally You cruise away for a few minutes ru a b u S : on Model irect injecti and then you come up behind d l .5 2 e: in Eng someone driving 98.5km/h. 7-speed oxer opposed b n: Lineartronic SLT Before you can say ‘omg, I have o si is e mod Transm to use my big toe again’, the ith manual m w to u a T CV 239N d n a car does a little beep, flashes a w k 6 Power: 13 0rpm little light on the windscreen 0 4 4 ), torque@ 0 (premium ,990 (Sport) and settles in at the new speed, 9 ,4 7 4 $ : Price s), $39 lu P rt o maintaining a safe distance to p $44,990 (S the car in front. horrible, tangled mess, no cramping in the big toe. Just brilliant. Acceleration is okay on the open road. It does everything you want it to do. Passing is easy, noise is low. There’s not much to worry about really. I turn off and head down Welcome Bay Rd, twisting and turning on the tarmac before turning off at the terrifyingly named Rocky Cutting Rd, where the real fun begins. This is where the Forester shines. Power and torque that was simply okay on the straight, open road, is nicely tuned for the steep, twisting, wet road. It skips around corners with ease, the collision warning system lighting up as the barriers on hairpin turns loom into view. The all-wheel-drive (standard across all models) handles the gravel roads with ease too and even fairly aggressive turns into loose metal are met with the same traction with no hint of a loss of control.
Billion dollar question
The 2019 Forester uses the Subaru Global Platform – a chassis shared across the Subaru’s range. It represents $1 billion of development and is incredibly stable and safe (Ancap 5-star rating). Combined with the boxer engine the platform provides great stability with very little sway or roll. I really didn’t have any suitable terrain to fully test the X-mode. This is for more serious four wheel driving, and should handle ski access roads and back country trips with ease. The AWD on its own covers almost every situation anyway. The premium model comes with a dual X-mode that has an extra setting for deep snow and mud.
Subaru has some pretty cool gadgets including facial recognition technology. When you plonk your caboose in the driver’s seat it will scan your face and automatically adjust the seat, mirrors and air con’ to your personal preferences. Both front seats have electric adjusters.
Plenty of safety features
One clever innovation that deserves a mention is the way the bottom sills are built into the doors. It leaves a sheer face on the main body, below the seats. This means you don’t get your trousers dirty when getting in and out of the vehicle and makes it easier for those with reduced mobility. All three models come with a Lineartronic SLT 7-speed CVT transmission. The safety features are not confined to the chassis and include symmetrical all-wheeldrive, (AWD) vehicle dynamics control, electronic stability control, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, traction control, limited slip device, 4-wheel disc brakes, hill start assist, rear view reverse camera, blind spot detection and lane change assist. The sport plus and premium models include side view monitors from cameras in the wing mirrors, front view monitors and an adaptive driving beam. The latter is a system that essentially allows drivers to operate high-beams all the time while preventing dangerous glare for both oncoming drivers and drivers in front. There are too many safety features to list here but the pre-collision braking systems and lane assist are notable features. The Subaru Forester is a family wagon at a family-friendly price. Five star safety rating Lower fuel spending dents retail card sales Fuel spending was down due to lower fuel prices in the March quarter, while spending in the remaining industries was up, says Statistics New Zealand. When adjusted for seasonal effects, fuel retail card spending fell 6.2 per cent from the December 2018 quarter. “The fall in fuel retail spending was driven by the lowest fuel prices since October 2017, coming after the high of more than $2.40 a litre in late 2018,” says retail statistics manager Sue Chapman. “Fuel prices dropped to just over $2 per litre in January 2019, rising to $2.20 by the end of the quarter.” Total retail card spending rose one per cent in the March 2019 quarter. This increase followed a 0.3 percent decrease in the December 2018 quarter. Despite the fall in fuel, growth continued for the core retail industries (excluding fuel and motor vehicles), up $219 million from the December 2018 quarter.
In actual terms, total retail card spending was $16 billion in the March 2019 quarter, up $395 million from the March 2018 quarter. However, the rate of increase has slowed, driven by the 8.8 per cent decrease in fuel retail spending compared with the same quarter last year. Retail spending was down in March. When adjusted for seasonal effects, total retail spending fell 0.3 per cent ($17 million) in the March 2019 month, after rises of 0.6 percent and 2.0 percent in the February and January months respectively. The decrease is largely attributed to the fall in the durables industry (appliances, electronics, and hardware), down 1.9 per cent. “Spending on groceries, fuel, and other necessities was up in the March month, while spending on more discretionary items such as appliances, electronics, and new clothing was down,” says Sue. “Fuel spending was up $4.2 million (0.7 percent), and consumables such as groceries were up $11 million (0.5 percent) on the previous month,” says Sue.
The all-new fourth generation Subaru Forester has achieved a five star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program. The 2019 Forester is fitted with industry-first safety technology, including a driver monitoring system which uses facial recognition to detect driver distraction and drowsiness. If the driver continues to look away from the road ahead, both the driver and passenger are warned through a visual and audio alert. It achieved 94 per cent for adult occupant protection and 86 per cent for child occupant protection. AA Motoring Services general manager, Stella Stocks, says it’s no surprise that the
Forester achieved five stars. “The Forester has been redesigned inside and out, with the addition of exciting new technology to improve the safety and comfort of all occupants,” says Stella. “It is a sign of great things to come for future Subaru models, and we can expect similar safety advancements across other manufacturers.” The Forester is popular among industry, Stella says. It won Best in Class – Medium SUV at the 2018 AA Driven NZ Car of the Year Awards, and was a top 10 finalist for the coveted AA Driven NZ Car of the Year title.
