Weekend Wheels June 2: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club invites everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. Oilers Hot Rod Club president Brent Woodcock says the club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their cool car along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event also. Pretty much anything goes, Woody says, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. June 4: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 Thirteenth Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions, usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year. June 8: ENEOS North Island Endurance Series Round 3, Hampton Downs This is the big final round of a championship series featuring some of the finest and fastest racing machinery in New Zealand. It includes the ENEOS One Hour and ENEOS Three Hour races. GT racers like those from McLaren, Audi, Porsche and more will all be racing, along with V8 machines that spent time in all of the V8 race series in this part of the world and have now been adapted and powered up for endurance. Throw in a few Porsche Cup cars, some TCR machinery and add to that a huge mixture of some of the smartest, and fastest home built endurance racing creations and you’ll have some idea of what to expect when you see these beasts unleashed. There’s practise all Friday with qualifying and both of the big races on Saturday. If you want to get up close and see some of these dream machines and meet some of the aces who put them through their paces you can walk through the paddock and get up close and

Why so many utes and where it began

This was after a Victoria farming family, or more accurately ‘the lady of the house’, wrote to Ford Australia. The family was unable to afford a vehicle to get to church on Sunday and a truck to take the pigs to the markets on Monday. She was disgusted at the state of their family’s vehicle from loading the market animals into the family wagon. Now, 85 Years on, five of the top 10 vehicles sold in New Zealand are utes. People seem to have taken to the versatility of utes, whether they’re throwing bikes in the tray for the weekend Mount bike ride or hooking the boat up to spend a weekend away fishing. Most late model utes are now capable of towing 3.5 tonnes. Also, the added space for all the gear in the tray, without crowding up the cab, is invaluable for a comfortable trip. Late model utes aren’t what they used to be either. They no longer barely have enough

power to make it over the Kaimai’s with all of them now being direct injection turbo diesel. With all the added creature comforts of radar cruise control, blind spot warnings, Bluetooth, hands-free, reverse cameras, keyless entry, why wouldn’t you seriously consider having one too? With all the accessories now available on the market, they have become the office of almost every tradie with central locking, air conditioning, canopies and hard lids etc. They can secure all of their tools with trade racks and draw systems. It is not only the office of every tradie, the ute has now become the so called “mall crawler” with huge offset rims and over sized tyres. Featuring big lift kits and shiny new bull bars, the ute has become an iconic New Zealand statement. Now don’t get me wrong, the ute is still a dominant vehicle within the farming industry and still being used as it was originally designed for; animals and gear in the back and comfort in the front. But the road from 1930s to today and into the future, sure looks very different! Alister Payne, East Coast 4X4 Super Centre

The design and engineering of the utility, now more commonly known as “the ute”, originated with Ford Australia.

When driver and car combine

Mazda has a saying; ‘Jinba-Ittai: Horse and rider as one’.

The LED screen in the CX-5 is wide but not too tall, fitting snugly into the console. The touch screen is simple enough. The environmental controls are standard buttons in standard places, so no surprises there either. Not quite so obvious is the big -5 GSX knob which sits just in front of Model: CX etrol the storage compartment and lp Engine: 2.5 6-speed armrest, between the front seats. : on Transmissi Once you learn how to work c ti a this dual dial/button, it is quite m to au 88hp) (1 w k handy for controlling many 0 4 1 Power: 000rpm 4 t a features of the vehicle. biggest SUV of its type, but the back seats fold flat to maximise storage and there is enough leg room in the back for all but the lankiest of goal defenders and prop forwards amongst us. That is a minor issue when you compare what this vehicle has to offer in almost every other department, compared with similar vehicles. Where this vehicle really excels is in its handling and performance. Even the nonturbo version provides plenty of grunt and the i-Activ AWD brings everything together nicely. Once we hit the motorway, the acceleration is excellent from the 186 horsepower petrol engine. The sports mode holds the rev’s a little longer, if that’s what you want. For me, this is more about enjoying the drive and knowing that the car has got your back, like one of those horses in a western movie. It is a testament to this vehicle that there really is very little to worry about, and you are free to try the new gadgets at your leisure. I turn off at Baypark and head out through Matapihi and it’s time to test the cruise control. This is the radar variety. You can set your desired speed and following distance to the vehicle in front and the car does the rest. Combined with the lane keep assist function, it makes for pretty cruisy motoring on the motorway and the wider state highways. Personally, I only use the active part of lane departure features on the really well-built highways. If you generally don’t trust robots you do have the option of just switching the warning on without the active assist part. As we head off up the highway to Mclaren

Falls some of the features in the CX-5 start to provide their obvious benefits, like the dynamic stability control and traction control. Other features are more subtle and are designed with the horse and rider principal in mind, like the G-vectoring control plus feature. Mazda has found people often overcompensate when cornering, because the vehicle does not immediately react the way they expect it to. With G-vectoring, a small amount of brake is applied upon cornering, which pitches the car forward a tiny amount. This means the vehicle holds better into the corners and satisfies the driver, avoiding the tendency to overcompensate. I arrive safe and sound at the falls, park the steed next to a babbling brook and wander over to a picnic table to eat a sandwich. It looks fantastic in its Soul Red Crystal paintwork. It has simple, sporty lines, typical wide Mazda grille and long, narrow LED headlights (these come with high beam control, automatically adjusting to oncoming traffic). Without even realising it, I had parked right next to another CX-5, and they look pretty good together. Who knows what the next generation will bring but if they keep improving on these genes, they will keep the riders happy. This really is great value for money so make sure you give it a try before committing to something similar. To test drive the CX-5 head down to the Mazda dealership at Ultimate Motor Group on the corner of Hewletts Rd and Totara St. Daniel Hutchinson

More power to the people They guzzle gas for breakfast up at The Lakes in Tauranga. On the first Sunday of every month, just before 9am, the air comes alive with the rumble of big engines. The Oilers have arrived and their mates aren’t far behind. Oilers Hot Rod Club president Brent Woodcock, or just ‘Woody’, will be there in his aptly named Model A Woody, and about 50-70 other car owners will add their rumble to the event also. Pretty much anything goes, Woody says, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. “Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people,” the advertisement says. Woody’s story is similar to that of a lot of car enthusiasts. His first pride and joy was a T-Bucket but, sadly, he crashed that on Range Rd when he was in his late 20’s. “I think everyone has grown up now. You could be 20 and own a hot rod and now you can’t unless you have got parents with plenty of money.” He has owned “a few” hot rods and big cars with big personalities. He’s currently offloading his “dirty old Chevy pick-up” so he can buy a ‘51 Chevy two-door coupe. His sales pitch for the pick-up will appeal to like-minded

people – “It’s a big old beast - long wheelbase. You want to get a sheet of ply or a sheet of Gib and it fits right in there”. And it turns a few heads when he rocks up to the hardware store drive-through. The replica Woody also turns a few heads. It came into his life as a pile of parts on a trailer. The wooden cab was just a piece of furniture and it had no engine. He has painstakingly put it back together and installed a 350 cubic inch engine and TH350 transmission. “It is terrible to drive. When I first got it the old tyres on it were crap. It used to wobble around and it was actually really horrible.” He fixed the wobbling with new tyres and a quick blast up the road reveals the appeal. The ear splitting noise, the rich

smell of petrol and the sheer acceleration and power, is what it’s all about. “You forget that you are in it and you are cruising down the road and people are staring at it and you wonder why. “You start to realise after a while why people are attracted to them.” Being part of a club is important. Members share expertise and stories. They host events and travel to those hosted by other clubs. Sometimes they will head up to Meremere for the drag races and once a month they have breakfast down at The Lakes. That’s where anyone can come down and sample the sights and sounds and smells of hot rod life. Do you have a car story you want to share with The Weekend Sun? Email daniel@thesun.co.nz
