Weekend Wheels June 15: Hampton Downs, Dodson Motorsport GTR Festival There’s something for every GTR lover, whether you own one yourself or simply have a soft spot for them. Expect to see every iteration of Godzilla, from the old-school Hakosuka and Kenmeri to the new-age R32, R33 and R34, and of course, the ultra hi-tech R35. From street cars, museum pieces and racing machines, this is set to be one of the largest gatherings of GTR’s that New Zealand has seen to date. The 2019 GTR Festival will feature everything from drag racing, to driving events, trade stands, show and shine events, and so much more. Make sure to check out our website and Facebook for all up-to-date information and cars coming to the event. It will be massive. July 7: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am On the first Sunday of every month, the Oilers Hot Rod Club invites everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event also. Pretty much anything goes, Woody says, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. July 2: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year. Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

Stepping out in the D-MAX If it weren’t for your gumboots, where would you be? Now, if I was an incompetent farmer and stepped out the door in a pair of wingtips, instead of red bands, I reckon I could still get a fair bit done in the Isuzu D-MAX. With the Shadow Kit on it, even if you did jump out the door, straight into a steamy welcome pat, nobody would stop and laugh at you – they’d be too busy looking at your truck. The D-MAX is a bit of a pin-up with this Shadow Kit. It includes the wide fender flares, heavy duty side steps, front bumper guards, tints and a mean looking decal set. The Shadow kit, with an RRP of more than $13,000, is available with any D-MAX for an extra $8750+gst, and is standard on the Limited Edition Fieldays Pack model, so it’s well worth mentioning here. The kit also includes premium Grappler A/T tyres and exclusive Pantera leather seats.

Heading for the hills

So, with my best pair of shoes on, and no intention of getting out of the truck (fingers crossed), I head for the hills. Having test driven a few vehicles, it always pays to ask if there are any hidden quirks to be aware of. I recently sat in the driveway of a car yard for 10 minutes, working out how to make it go forward. The answer is a simple ‘no’. This is no space age vehicle with buttons instead of levers. The steering wheel does not try to intervene if you stray to the edge of the lane. It doesn’t bark at you if you do something wrong or tell you what the speed limit is.

Getting the basics right

There are loads of safety features like advanced braking system, side intrusion bars and airbags and it earns a five star ANCAP safety rating. There are extras like trailer sway control but mostly there is just the things you need in a ute; traction control, high and low ratio 4WD, satellite navigation and a great sound system. There are none of the things you don’t need. The talk from Isuzu owners is that these things are indestructible, incredibly reliable and are great off-road and on-road.

SPECS

Get it regularly serviced and your ute will go for many hundreds of thousands of kilometres before stuff begins to go wrong. This reputation is backed up with a three year warranty, unlimited kilometres warranty - the only ute in NZ with an unlimited k’s warranty.

Pile it on

This is a truck that simply gets on and does the dirty jobs, year in and year out. The three-litre turbo diesel engine produces about 130kw of power while the recently re-worked rear suspension system provides a higher level of comfort, without sacrificing load capacity. The load capacity is pretty impressive too - you can put 1085kg on the back which is basically a 1000 litre tank. Towing capacity is the same as other utes in the workhorse class at 3500kg. So, I head for the hills to look for cows and mud and steep hills. I’m barely 10km up Oropi Rd when Hereford Rd appears. This is surely a sign from the motoring Gods because it doesn’t get any more rural than that. It is like a poster for rural life up here. It does for the D-MAX, what Central Otago does for pinot noir. So this is where the photos get done later on. However I doubt anyone wants me to tear up their lush grass and winter feed, so I head further up into the Kaimai’s in search of gravel roads and deep ruts. This 4WD handles the obstacles with ease and is crying out for more of a thorough test. I’m not sure what our insurance status is, so there’s no river crossings or perilous, rocky hill climbs.

The hard yards

Check out the more comprehensive test drive videos online and you will see this ute does have the credentials when it comes to the hard stuff. On the open road and around town the rear wheel drive and the suspension deliver a surprisingly comfortable drive. It is not jarring as you would expect from a serious ute. The three leaf suspension is still designed to handle a big load, but without sacrificing comfort.

Steel plates protect the length of the undercarriage from rocks and stones. Inside, you can put your slippered feet up and listen to your tunes on the eight speakers. If you get lost there is an eight inch touchscreen with a satellite navigation system – this is an essential bit of kit these days so it fits the brief for the D-MAX. All-in-all, this is well worth taking a look at. There are 12 models to choose from, including the single and double cab, 2wd and 4wd, auto and manual, starting from $32,990 + GST (the Fieldays special). The Shadow Kit can be added to any D-MAX model for $8750+GST and that really makes a statement. Dan Hutchinson

Tough terrain on the horizon Two Tauranga teens are taking on a unique motorsport event later in the year. It is called King of the Hammers in America or Ultra4. Here in New Zealand the four-wheel-drive racing event is known as King of the North. Organiser Caleb Thompson says the event started in the US when founders Dave Cole and Jeff Knoll decided to combine rock crawling and off-road racing. The main event each year is the King of the Hammers, in Johnson Valley, California. Caleb says 12 people turned up to the lake bed 13 years ago for the inaugural event. This year there was more than 69,000 spectators and 9000 RV’s. They witnessed UTV racing (4900 Class), Every Man Challenge (4500, 4600 and 4800 class), Shootout, T1 race (desert trucks), and the main race the 4400 Unlimited class. “Ultra4 in the US has a big racing series across the country, a new series launching in Canada, a new race launching in Mexico and a five round series in Europe that started in 2012 in England. In New Zealand, it is happening at the Polaris 4WD Park, Woodhill, Auckland, August 10-11,. Competitors can expect a new challenge and spectators can expect some exciting watching, Caleb says. They have designed a 5.5km loop track, with a sand base. “We plan to make some obstacles on to test man and machine to their limits as well as encourage safety and team work,” says Caleb.

Kieran Boston and Dyson Delahunty.

Driver training will save lives on our roads Kiwi motor sport driver Greg Murphy says training people to be better prepared and more responsible drivers is the answer to saving lives on New Zealand roads – not reducing speed limits or blaming the roads.

Photo: Caitlin Houghton

Dyson Delahunty (19) and Kieran Boston (16) are entering as a team, in the UTV section of the event, with a Polaris RZR. “King of the Hammers has been on my bucket list for a few years now.” “I’m most looking forward to being out there racing and seeing the sport grow in New Zealand as it’s been a dream of mine to go over and watch the King of the Hammers for many years. “My favourite part is watching the top guys battle it out over the tough terrain and huge rock steps and watching how their trucks handle the abuse,” says Kieran. For someone who didn’t know anything about Ultra4 or King of the Hammers, Caleb explains it like this:

Bay Driver

“It is purpose built vehicles, with the speed of off-road racing and the challenge of obstacles. “It is more than just the racing, it’s an event to let creativity shine with vehicle builds and ideas, a place to go hang out and compete against people that have the same passion. “Our good friend and race director of Ultra4 JT Taylor said it best – ‘Take all of your money, light it on fire and throw some big tyres on it’. “Some people live for boating, we live to go wheeling.” With this event being the first of its kind for New Zealand, Caleb says the golden question is ‘how big will the turn out for the event be?’ Caitlin Houghton

“If there is one message that needs to be heard it is to stop blaming the roads and the speed limits and start taking driver responsibility, training and testing seriously. I’m not saying that there isn’t a need for roading improvements, there most definitely is. Improving the country’s roading network will improve transport efficiency and in some cases it might assist in reducing injuries and deaths, but people will still crash if we don’t change the current driving culture.” “The real problem is how we are driving and until we have a system in place that puts people with the right skills behind the wheel, we will keep seeing more deaths and horrific injuries from road accidents.” “I drive New Zealand roads and every day I see people making terrible driving decisions – it’s not the fault of the roads.” “The best investment we can ever make in saving lives and reducing the road toll is by putting more resources into training people how to be safer drivers by providing specific practical training which will create much better driving awareness on our roads meaning drivers will be more focused and less distracted.” “As a parent I know, the driver licensing system in New Zealand is broken.” “I see my son getting six months knocked off his restricted licence just by doing a Defensive Driving course where he’s sitting in a classroom for eight hours. Is that actually going to make him a better driver at his most critical time of learning – I don’t think so.” “Nothing will change, unless we go to the root the problem which is how people are driving, how we are training them, how we are testing them. “When we have better, safer drivers, then New Zealand’s road toll will go down.”

4x4 Vehicle Recovery Someone very wise once said, “There are a million ways to mess it all up when you go off-road”. He wasn’t wrong. There are many forms of off-road driving, f from the farmer who takes the gravel road home from town on our many beautiful rural gravel roads around New Zealand, right through to organised tag-along trips through stunning farms and high country stations held almost every weekend. (Watch out for our next article with our story on our amazing four-week South Island 4x4 trip we did a while back). Firstly, we need to appreciate that there are many forms of recovery. Not only does it entail vehicle recovery which stems from a loss of forward momentum like going through mud etc, but it includes correctly stabilising a vehicle that may be in a dangerous, unsafe situation, to stop it from rolling over etc. Another form of recovery is one where a vehicle has already rolled and needs be to winched back upright. But most recoveries happening around New Zealand on a daily basis are probably like what we did this last summer which was pulling trees and king palms out of the ground on our small lifestyle property. These small and large jobs are done by farmers, bee keepers, lifestyle block owners and forestry workers around New Zealand every day. One only needs to look up ‘bad recoveries gone wrong’ on You Tube to see that there are lots of ways things can go wrong and very quickly. It always starts with the persons involved

not having any experience in proper recovery techniques whatsoever. What compounds this lack of experience even further is when incorrect strops (ropes) and incorrect recovery points are used. Factory toweye’s (where you connect a tow strap to the front of the vehicle) and tow bar balls, become missile’s when they break off. They hurtle back towards the other vehicle because of the kinetic energy built up, with disastrous results. To date many people have been seriously injured and many have lost their lives because of these three ingredients: lack of proper experience, wrong recovery gear and wrong recovery points. On most of our trips and especially beach runs it amazes me the lack of experience and lack of recovery gear people have on board. The amount of times we have come across a stranded vehicle which is being recovered by a very inexperienced person in another vehicle, is quite frightening. Wherever we go, we are always trying to equip people with knowledge so they can make it home safe every night. The responsibility lies with the person doing the recovery and the person being recovered. There are numerous safety recovery courses being run around New Zealand ranging from basic techniques (which we run), right through to detailed courses run by very experienced, licensed safety instructors that can even give you a certificate once you have completed the course. So please stay safe. When in doubt, and if possible, take your time thinking everything through. Thor Hein,
