Weekend Wheels June 30: Hampton Downs, Caffeine and Gasoline, 8am-2pm Caffeine and Gasoline is Hampton Downs’ very own car show which takes place on the last Sunday of each month in the top carpark adjacent to the new Cafe and entertainment Hub. It’s a meet up for all types of vehicles, from bikes to hot rods, muscle cars to supercars. There is plenty of parking so come along and check out all the cool vehicles, grab a coffee and/or meal or get involved with some of the optional activities we have available on selected days - track cruise, wet skid pan. June 30, Bay Rodders Winterblast, Spring St Carpark Building Hundreds of classic cars, hot rods, vintage, special interest cars and motorcycles will be on display on each level of the Spring St carpark building. There will also be an automotive swap and trade site as part of the event. More details inside today’s Bay Driver. July 7: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club invites everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event also. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. July 2: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year. List your event Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

Prowling around in the F-PACE
What does the Jaguar F-PACE and a game of golf have in common? Not much really, except it will look great in the carpark and everyone will definitely know you have arrived.
Nevertheless I was prepared for such a disappointment, and had a pretty good route mapped out that would test this big beast, without exceeding the speed limit, or offending the sensibilities of the local farming folk. So, I merge myself with the luxurious leather bucket seats while sales executive However, I did kind of feel like I’d scored Grayson Garrett explains the various a hole in one when the request to review idiosyncrasies peculiar to this car. With a touch of gas, it growls out onto Hewletts Rd, matching pace with the traffic almost instantly. Even though this is effectively a highly sophisticated hot rod, the acceleration is not as jumpy as the horsepower would suggest. It is easy to control the power and you need intent to fully use it. That isn’t to say the ease of acceleration doesn’t take some getting used to – you can be well over the speed limit in the blink of an eye if you are not careful, but there are warning systems for that as well. The seats are incredibly stylish and comfortable. The Meridian Surround Sound system boasts a total of 825 watts and it really pumps out the tunes. But you don’t actually want to leave the music on, on your first excursion in the F-Pace. This vehicle sounds good enough all on its own. I head out of town, through Bethlehem, over the Wairoa River Bridge and turn left up Wairoa Rd. This route up through Wairoa/Crawford/Poripori roads is excellent for testing performance vehicles when you need to stick to the speed limit. The twisting roads, steep sections and
short straights give some insight into what the F-PACE is capable. It can reportedly reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 283 km/h. The torque is an astonishing 680Nm which is achieved in the 2500-5500 rpm range. All of this adds up to a very fun ride. Powering up over the hills, it is easy to get a sense of the true nature of this vehicle although it would be great fun to test the acceleration, speed and handling on a proper track. There’s really nowhere else to test the full limits but there are plenty of on-line reviews if you are keen to see it really taken through its paces. For me, the grumble and crackle when accelerating and decelerating is quite fun but it can startle joggers and cyclists so you can tone it down a bit by closing those ports in the exhaust. Ninety minutes goes by pretty quick in the big F-Pace and soon I’m pulling back into Duncan and Ebbett’s yard and handing the keys back to Grayson. If you want a shot of adrenaline in your quest for the perfect SUV, then head down and try it for yourself. Dan Hutchinson

Classic cars and hot rods take over The Bay Rodders Winterblast is taking over a carpark building in Tauranga on the weekend. Classic cars, hot rods, vintage, special interest cars and motorcycles will be on display on each level of the Spring St carpark building in Tauranga on Sunday, June 30. President of the club Lynne Paton says there is normally 200-300 cars at the annual display but thinks that this year it may be up around 400 filling up the parks of the car park building. An automotive swap meet will also be part of the day’s activities. “This event on Sunday is part of our annual mid-year event that Bay Rodders host over the weekend with about 80 cars and 150-160 people attending from all over the North Island,” says Lynne.
For club members and those attending from out of town, the Winterblast starts Friday night at the Bay Rodders clubrooms. There’s a light dinner on Friday night, and a Saturday breakfast, before everyone sets off on a mystery drive and lunch. Saturday night is an evening of dinner and dance with the theme American Icon. “The Winterblast event goes all weekend, but on the Sunday the club loves to put on this display for the public to come and see.” Bay Rodders also invites all those with a classic car, hot rod, special interest car or cool motorbike to come along and show off their ride to the public. “The carpark will be open to entrants from 7am to 9am. We ask all cars and bikes to stay on display until 1pm for safety reasons.” Entry to the Spring St car park will be from the Wharf St end of Durham St. Everyone with a car or motorcycle on display will be eligible to enter the Entrant Prize Draw at 1pm. There are some great prizes up for grabs, including the club’s major giveaway of a 42’’ TV and a Hot Rodders Garage Neon
sign from ‘Neon Effect’. Entry to the show on Sunday June 30 is $5 for adults, families $12 (two adults and two children), and free for children under five. An ‘automotive swapper and trade’ site will be available on Sunday at the car display event. For more information on this contact Lynne 027 2233129 or Ross 021915418.
