Weekend Wheels August 4: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. August 6: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tu sday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year. September 21: Blossom Festival Car Display Street Machines and Customs is holding its 42nd birthday bash on Saturday, September 21. Again, it is being held with the help of Greerton Main Street, incorporating the Greerton Blossom Festival and School Gala, so no shortage of things to do. Al Dawson and the Wildcats will be rocking the rotunda, our famous no reserve auction is always a highlight and with the shops, bars and school all getting behind the day it becomes a real community effort. Chadwick road is closed for the car display between 10am-2pm with all cars in by 9am. Entry is via Greerton Rd Roundabout and is free to participate and for the public. Show is open to Hot Rods, Customs and Classic’s of American and Australian origin. Enquiries to Greig: 07 543 0803.

For over 45 years we’ve been making it easier for New Zealanders to get the things they need. We offer personal and business lending including pre-approval so you know exactly how much you have to work with.

While comfort is a big factor in making Citroen stand out at the moment, there are quite a few other things to like about this car. It has a Euro 6.2 efficiency rating that put it 15 years ahead of the Government’s CO2 vehicle emission goals. But don’t be fooled, this vehicle delivers fantastic power through its 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine. The C5 Aircross has the new eight-speed automatic which makes for easy low rev cruising of about 1600 rpm at 100km/h. Amazingly, 1.6 litres is the maximum engine size of any vehicle in the Citroen range. And the fun doesn’t end there – like its sister brand Peugeot, there are some really advanced smart driving features. The park assist is impressive, the active lane assist is impressive and the active cruise control also. These are not the minimal versions of this technology. They are well designed and reliable features that provide genuine benefits to the driver All of these things can, of course, be turned off but even the most assured drivers will benefit from learning one or two new gadget each week. There are some really thoughtful extras as well – like the window wind-up function on the key remote – just hold your finger dow on the door lock button and the windows go up too. The infotainment system is also shared with Peugeot and, once again is built for comfort and safety. Pretty much everything is voice activated as well. It doesn’t get much safer than that.

I took this car up through Bethlehem, then left through to Tauriko and on up Pyes Pa Rd, through Oropi Gorge and back down into town. This is a quiet achiever – very quiet. Noise reduction is all part of the efforts to make Citroen synonymous with comfort. That means you can fully enjoy Apple Car Play or Android Auto, without road noise corrupting your favourite music. There are too many features to list in this review but safety is front and centre with an ENCAP 5-star rating, six airbags, automatic emergency braking up to 140km/h, front collision warning and 180 degree rear reversing camera. You will be automatically advised of the speed limit on the dash, and it has a function that automatically adjusts high and low beam depending on approaching traffic. There i a hill start assist function and advanced grip control for those tricky, steep hill descents. Other extras include 3D satellite navigation, hands-free electric tailgate, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth connectivity and keyless entry. The driver’s seat has electric adjustment for height and tilt. So for the most epic of relaxing Sunday drives, take your Citroen, and a good book, head to your favourite spot, lie back and chill out. For an extra $2500 you can get a panoramic sliding sunroof so you can watch the clouds go by as you nod off, dreaming of easy turns and bumps that disappear. Daniel Hutchinson

A drive of a difference to make a difference

Bay Driver

Rebecca Cooke and Jono Boyd rev’ themselves up for their new challenge.

Imagine driving 18,000km across three deserts, five mountain ranges and 23 countries in th smallest smart car ever to help put the spotlight on mental health. That’s what a young Kiwi-British couple will do when they take to the road this week to drive from the UK to Mongolia in a 2002 Smart Passion City Coupe. This week, Jono Boyd (35), from New Zealand’s Great Barrier Island, and his English girlfriend Rebecca Cooke (28) kicked off a two-month journey across Europe, Central Asia to Mongolia as part of The Mongol Rally. Sponsored by Driveline, New Zealand’s leading car leasing and finance specialists, Team Smart Arses will tackle man challenges before crossing the finish line on, or before September 16. The adventurous duo aim to raise more than $10,000 along the way for their chosen New Zealand charity, I AM HOPE. “We’re always up for stepping outside of our comfort zones and the Mongol Rally ticked all the boxes for us – we can experience parts of the world we’ve never been to before while putting the spotlight on charities we feel passionate about,” says Jono, who will share the journey with the couple’s 18,000-plus followers on social media. “Rebecca and I don’t do things by halves, so we decided to make the rally even harder for ourselves by choosing the smallest car imaginable for the job, a 0.6L car we’ve named the ‘Smart Arse’.” Jono, a recovered methamphetamine addict who has overcome mental health issues says I AM HOPE, a charity founded by Kiwi celebrity Mike King to support those suffering mental health problems, resonates strongly with him.

Driveline CEO Lance Manins, who is a recovered alcoholic, met Jono nine years ago at rehab and wanted to support the couple’s drive. “Jono and I have both been on our own personal journeys with addiction and mental health and share the motivation to help others who are going through tough times. This is a great opportunity for Driveline to get behind Jono and Rebecca’s drive of a difference to make a difference!” The young couple, who met while hiking in the Himalayas in 2018, most recently travelled around New Zealand in a Toyota Hilux motorhome for six months, but Rebecca, a freelance writer, says this will be their biggest test yet! “During the past year we’ve been travelling the world together at a leisurely and comfortable pace, but this will be a bit different,” says Rebecca, who adds they are squeezing 40 litres of fuel supply into the tiny car, along with all other essentials – food, clothing and shelter –

during the traverse. Team Smart Arses plan to drive for up to 14 hours each day, with 300 other people from all corn4ers of the globe. With its flashing lights and unusual sounding horn, ‘Smar Arse’ is sure to turn heads. “We had to get a whole new clutch put in the car just two weeks ago as the original clutch was slipping, so we’re hopeful ‘Smart Arse’ will do us proud and get us all the way in once piece,” says Jono. “We’re very grateful to everyone that has had confidenc in us to do this, particularly Driveline – we wouldn’t be able to do this without all the support!” Team Smart Arses are also raising funds for Cool Earth, committed to protecting the planet’s rainforests from deforestation and Chilypep, an organisation that builds emotional resilience and improves young people’s mental health services, in addition to the mental health awareness charity I AM HOPE.

4x4 South Island Trip (Second Leg)

As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. We gave an account of what and where we went over the first five nights heading fro Tauranga through to North Canterbury. Here is our second leg of the trip from Lake Tennyson to Geraldine. After almost being blown away by the Canterbury north-westerly wind at Lake Tennyson, we packed up camp and headed south to Hanmer Springs, a quaint alpine holiday spot in North Canterbury. Before arriving there we opted to take a detour over Jacks Pass and try a new little track that was extremely steep going downhill. This little track was mostly over grown but followed the power lines, heading down into Hanmer. As soon as we were 400m in we knew this was going to be a seriously challenging track. Luckily for us the surface was dry as you would never attempt such a track in the wet. All was assured over our walkie talkies that

luckily we didn’t have to drive back up this gnarly trail, but after 3km or so, we arrived at an abrupt dead end, half way to the bottom. With no other option but to turn around and head back up. It was a very, very steep climb back out, but once we all got to the top safely, there was some great banter over the walkie talkies, with the wives and kids having their fair share added in there too. I must say, we do a lot of tag-along trips around New Zealand and we are very spoilt with landscapes and people. Having a walkie talkie in every vehicle makes the trips so much more informative and entertaining. Anyway, back to the story. We opted to stay two nights at the very well kitted-out Top 10 Holiday Park in Hanmer Springs and also spent some quality time soaking in the world famous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools. Then it was off to Amberley, to meet up with the rest of the group we would be joining for the next two weeks. For the next three nights we would be completely off the grid and away from civilisation, so a good restocking of everything needed was in order. By now we were 14 trucks and all heading

into the Lake Coleridge area, criss-crossing rivers and high country stations with spectacular scenery, going deeper into alpine country. By late afternoon, we reached our first campsite next to a river in a small valley with very majestic mountains flanking us on both sides. It was a very peaceful, quiet night once everyone had climbed into the sack. Next morning after everyone packed up and the group was heading off, a few members were complaining bitterly that they needed to find a blood bank as the West Coast sand flies had taken more than their fair share of blood through the night on a few victims in our party. We spent two more nights in various valleys before heading out through the Rakaia Gorge. What an epic, majestic river bed this is. Some parts of the river are so wide it could easily swallow whole rural towns. There was lots of chat about how you would not want to be anywhere near this river bed when it is in full flood mode Wives and kids were very happy when over the radios it was suggested that we stay in motels in Geraldine for the night rather than in tents again. Isn’t it amazing when you spend time with

like-minded people, doing the things we love? Even though we had only spent three nights with this other group, it felt like we had known them for years, such was the camaraderie and banter. Everyone was having a seriously good time. In the next chapter we will be continuing with our travels, through the McKenzie Country (my favourite). Please stay tuned for our next chapter coming soon. Thor Hein, East Coast 4x4 Super Centre.
