The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at th Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year.
September 8: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am
On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event also. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. List your event: Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

The motoring gods have spoken The sun is shining and the pressures of everyday life are fast disappearing in the rear vision mirror. It is a mild winter’s afternoon and with a few hours to spare, there can be no better idea than to hit the road and test out the latest offering from the motoring gods. And I’ve got just the car for the occasion – the Kia Rio LX; a medium sized car with a small price tag and a big list of features. There is a lot of car here for the money. It is packed full of great technology, and the best safety features. It feels simple, uncluttered and easy to use. Aside from the occasional bump of the steering wheel when the car corrects itself from drifting too close to the edge of the road and the 7-inch touch screen on the console, there is little to give away the technology that lies beneath. It is astonishing that a car in this price bracket has advanced features like the Lane Keep Assist system and Autonomous Emergency Braking (This means it will brake when it senses a collision is unavoidable.). Also pretty amazing for a car in this price bracket, there is Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The LX model doesn’t have satellite navigation but the higher spec EX, LTD and 1.0 litre turbo GT models do. This doesn’t really matter too much if you pair your phone to the car because then you have all the apps you want anyway. That’s the beauty of Apple Car play and Android Auto.

I took the Rio out of the Tauranga Motor Company yard on the corner of Cameron Rd and 3rd Ave and headed for Greerton. This is a car that is going to appeal to a lot of different people so I took it around the city, through Papamoa to the Mount before coming back down Hewletts Rd and into the city. There really is very little to complain about with this car. It drives well, corners well, the ride quality and comfort is good. It has a good range of safety features. The Lane Keep Assist works great on the big motorways. This feature is designed as a safeguard on long drives and is most effective and useful on motorways and straighter roads. Less so on windy roads. Inside, it is nice and roomy in the front seats. There is seating for three people in the back and there is good headroom in the back. The seats all fold down or can be laid down in a 60:40 split which makes this a really versatile vehicle for a young family, as a company car and for commuters. The interior is nicely designed with woven cloth seats. The steering wheel has tilt and telescopic adjustment and you will find a little bit of luxury with th composite leather steering wheel and gear knob. Fuel economy doesn’t disappoint at 6.0 litres per 100Km. That makes for pretty inexpensive motoring. Back on the road, the Rio LX cruises nicely and the 6-speed auto transmission doesn’t muck around during gear changes. We have already touched on some of the safety features that contribute towards this car boasting a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. One of the main features in this department is the dual front, side and sidecurtain airbags. The brakes are also worth mentioning – they are pretty important for most people afterall. It has ABS with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) – this adjusts the amount of brake force applied to each wheel, depending on the road conditions, load etc. All-in-all this is a fantastic vehicle for the money. This is a whole lot of car which is fun to drive, practical and safe. Kia Rio LX is also available in a 6-speed manual while three other specifications are available includin a 1.0L Turbo with 7-Speed DSG gearbox. Pop down and see the guys at Tauranga Motor Company, on the corner of Cameron Rd and 3rd Ave for a test drive.

Kiwis consider going electric Kiwis are on board the electric vehicle revolution with 74 per cent saying they would consider buying one for their next vehicle, according to a recent Trade Me survey. Head of Motors at Trade Me Alan Clark said more than 1,300 New Zealanders took part in the survey which looked at Kiwis’ perceptions of electric vehicles (EVs). “We were keen to see how much EVs had come onto the radar of petrol-head New Zealand. We were stunned to find out that nearly three-in-four New Zealanders would consider an EV for their next vehicle.” Mr Clark said New Zealanders had recently warmed up to EVs. “Just last year we asked Kiwi motorists the same question and only half of respondents said they’d look at an EV for their next vehicle. That is a huge shift in mind set in just 12 months. “With climate change top of mind for many people, a range of new models on the market, rising fuel costs and the government’s new plan to subsidise EVs, we think more Kiwis will make the switch in the near future. “The initial outlay, however, is the biggest deterrent
for New Zealanders with 69 per cent claiming the cost of buying an EV is the number one reason why they haven’t already jumped on the bandwagon.” Mr Clark said the average cost for an EV on Trade Me in June was approximately $25,000 while the average petrol/diesel car was just $16,000. Mr Clark said despite the leaps and bounds EVs have made, Kiwis are still more likely to buy a petrol vehicle than any other. “Cost, is of course a motivating factor to New Zealand consumers. While you can pick up a used EV onsite for around $13,000, they don’t fit into everyone’s budget. Mr Clark said there were not a lot of EVs in New Zealand in comparison to petrol and diesel vehicles. Of the 95,000 vehicles for sale on Trade Me, only 1000 were electric. Kiwis are also concerned about running out of charge before reaching their destination with range concerns being the second most common reason for not purchasing an EV. “These factors will be overcome by time and technology advancement though and it will be interesting to see how the Government’s proposed subsidy on electric vehicles will impact buying habits. Our survey suggests there’s certainly an appetite for EVs and we’ll probably see more of them on the road if prices dip.” “We’ve seen a growing number of Kiwis looking at EVs onsite. There’s been a 34 per cent jump in the number of EVs being added to Kiwis’ watchlists when compared to last year. “The number of EVs for sale onsite has also increased, rising 17 per cent on June last year.” Mr Clark said this had been driven by an increase in the number of dealers who are importing and supporting used EVs to offer New Zealanders a wider range.

New vehicle market continues bumpy ride
Fewer new vehicles were sold in July compared to the same month last year and it is expected the overall market for the year will be down on 2018. Motor Industry Association Chief Executive David Crawford says new vehicle sales were 3.5 per cent lower than July last year and year-to-date sales were down by 5.2 per cent on the first seven months of 2018. “The trend for 2019 is a bumpy ride but overall downwards compared to 2018.” Toyota remains the market leader with 18 per cent market share (2,185 units), followed by Ford with 9 per cent (1,040 units) with Mitsubishi regaining third spot with 8 per cent market share (950 units). When it comes to SUV and passenger vehicle sales in July Toyota was the market leader with 18 per cent market share (1,432 units) followed by Mazda with 9 per cent (713 units) and then Kia with 7 per cent market share (585 units). The top selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Toyota Corolla (500 units) followed by the Toyota RAV4 (442 units) and the Kia Sportage (302 units). In commercial vehicle sales, Ford retained the market lead for the month of July with 19 per cent market share (760 units) closely followed by Toyota also with 19 per cent (753 units) and Mitsubishi third with 11 per cent market share (451 units). The Ford Ranger retained the top spot as the bestselling commercial model with 17 per cent share (657 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux with 13 per cent share (534 units) with the Mitsubishi Triton in third with 11 per cent market share (451 units).

4x4 South Island Trip (Third Leg) 42 Dive Cres, Tauranga | 07 571 1161
Lake Tekapo
As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. Here is our third leg of the trip from Geraldine to Ranfurly. For anyone who hasn’t travelled the road from Geraldine to Twizel, past Lake Tekapo, you are missing one of NZ’s best scenic drives hands-down. The view of the turquoise water of Lake Tekapo is almost unreal, as is the view of Mt Cook in the distance. It was just after Lake Tekapo, we hit the dirt roads and went through a couple of high country stations, ending up by circling the outside of Lake Benmore and coming out at the dam wall. It was here that we saw the true impact of a type of rosebush that is getting out of hand, very quickly, with the total landscape
completely transformed from what it used to be. After passing through Omarama, we once again hit the dirt and took a DOC track which eventually (42km later), ends up in Ranfurly. This track, hands-down, must be the best track anywhere. The scenery was truly epic as we were on top of the world seeing the Alps in the distance almost all the time. This was not a track for the faint hearted as it has very big, steep descents and hill climbs, all on shingle rock. Unless you were very experienced, I wouldn’t recommend taking this track. We stayed one night on this track at a recommended hut in a peaceful valley, but once again, the north-wester made sure we had little sleep that night. In the next chapter we will be continuing with our travels further into the Mackenzie Basin. Please stay tuned for our next chapter coming soon. Thor Hein, East Coast 4x4 Super Centre.
