September 3: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga
The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tu sday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions, usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year.
September 1: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am
On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club inv tes everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event also. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Mill House and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people.
List your event: Do you have a motoring related event coming up? Send the details to daniel@thesun.co.nz and we will list it, for free, in the Weekend Wheels. Bay of Plenty events get preference and listings are subject to space.

maximum torque of 450Nm. The suspension is set up to cope with big loads but still manages a smooth ride on a rough road without the load to hold it down. Toyota has been doing this for a while and seems to have the balance just right. That’s important for a multi-use vehicle like this because it is not just a work ute – it’s got a social life too and comfort is important. The new 2.8 litre, four cylinder turbo diesel has been redeveloped from the ground up to provide power and torque while still maintaining its reputation for reliability. These engines really hold their torque and the extra power is a big advantage around town, when pulling away from the lights and on the steeper hills, especially with a big load like a horse float or a boat (up to 3500kg) Inside, there are a few treats for the driver like the all-important touch screen – a nice big 7” (18cm) screen. You can hook your smartphone up using the Bluetooth and either use the touchscreen to change songs or the controls on the steering wheel. It also comes with satellite navigation. In reverse the generous screen becomes the rear camera display. Safety-wise the Hilux carries a 5-Star Ancap rating and it includes some serious technology in the brakes including smart technology like brake assist which senses
when you should have braked harder in an emergency and does it for you. Hill start assist, traction control and trailer sway control are some of the other useful stability features. In addition to that you have active lane assist to keep you on track and active cruise control that keeps your speed steady and your following distance as well. You are living the high life in a Hilux and I can see why they are popular as a suburban vehicle. Sitting up high at the helm of the Hilux gives you a good vantage point on the surrounding traffic. You are above it all and have good visibility at intersections and roundabouts. And last, but not least, there is the fuel efficiency. The Hilux chews up the k’s with barely a murmur, achieving an average fuel consumption of 7.9 litres per 100km (6.6 litres on the open road and 10.3 around town). That is pretty impressive for a vehicle of this size. To try out something in the Hilux range, head down to see the team at Pacific Toyota on the corner of Elizabeth St and Cameron Rd.

Beat the winter woes It may be winter but that’s no reason to be woeful. AA Traveller is encouraging people to jump in the car and head for one of the many winter hot spots. It has released a new Must-Do’s Walking Guide and Must-Do’s Cycling Guide which aims to inspire and motivate Kiwis and international travellers to explore the outdoors. AA Traveller Editor Kath Webster says while getting outdoors might not be top of mind in August; the new guides features plenty of walks and cycle trails suitable for all seasons. “The great thing about the Must-Do’s Walking Guide is that it covers all sorts of walks around the country, from short 30-minute urban walks to multi-day hikes,” Kath says. “Urban walks such as the Auckland Foreshore Heritage Walk and the Harbourside Path in Dunedin are just as good to do on a winter’s day. The Rainbow Falls Walk and Hatea Loop Walkway in Northland are also very doable in winter, and if you get a clear day, Mt Maunganui (Mauao) Summit Walk is beautiful. Or people can go on an epic winter journey by heading south to explore the Mainland in all its winter glory. “If it hasn’t been snowing, the Mt Isobel Track above the Hanmer Springs Village in Canterbury can also be done in winter – but still dress warm

and prepare for all weather conditions, and I highly recommend heading to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa afterwards.” The Must-Do’s Cycling Guide meanwhile covers in detail the 22 Great Rides on Nga Haerenga The New Zealand Cycle Trail, ‘Heartland Rides’ which link the Great Rides, and a range of “beyondthesaddle” journey ideas. Safety is a key component of both guides, with details such as terrain, fitness level required and best times to walk covered in the walking guide; and New Zealand road rules and safety tips for cyclists covered in the cycling guide. The guides also feature maps, track and trail overviews, local tips and highlights, and information on places to stay. It is the first time AA Traveller has given the “Must-Do’s” stamp to its guides. “Our 101 Must-Do’s campaign was so popular over summer, with Kiwis ticking off ‘Must-Do’s’ in their backyard that we’ve decided to make all our guides ‘Must-Do’s’. We’re also planning North Island and South Island Must-Do guides,” Kath adds. The Must-Do’s Walking Guide and Must-Do’s Cycling Guide are available free at AA Centres, DOC Visitor Centres, i-SITEs, airports and many accommodation, attraction and tour operators. end to the emotive language and finger pointing associated with fuel pricing. “Generalisations about people being ‘fleeced’ are not helpful and just inflame the situation “We’re aware of members and their staff who have been verbally abused in the wake of those sorts of comments.”
MTA Chief Executive Craig Pomare said the report’s findings confirmed the concerns raised by the Association. “A serious lack of competition at the wholesale level and inflexible contracts that prevent resellers switching suppliers were two major concerns we highlighted in our submission,” Mr Pomare said. “We’re delighted that these two issues are key parts of the Commerce Commission findings “Quite frankly, we’re pumped with what we’ve seen today.” Mr Pomare said the MTA would review the preliminary report in detail and looked forward to working with the Commerce Commission to finalise the report and its recommendations. He said he hoped the release of the report would now see an
Mr Pomare said the MTA was delighted the Commerce Commission had steered well away from that sort of provocative language. “What the Commerce Commission’s report does do is shine a light on where the real problems in the retail fuel market are, and they are not caused by the retailers. Mr Pomare said the other factor in pricing that shouldn’t be forgotten is tax, which currently makes up around 50 per cent of the price of a litre of petrol.”

4x4 South Island Trip (fourth leg)
Poolburn Valley is beautiful but the weather can switch to bitterly cold, even in summer.
As discussed in our last column, a couple of Christmases ago we packed up the family and headed to the South Island for just over four weeks for a cracker of a summer break. Here is our fourth leg of the trip from Ranfurly to Ranfurly. (Will explain shortly). After staying a well deserved night in a Ranfurly motel, we hit the gravel roads heading to the Serpentine Church, in the Poolburn Valley. This church was New Zealand’s most elevated at 1000m and was a bustling place due to the discovery of gold, back in 1863. Seeing the rocks hanging off the sides of the building with wire (to hold the roof down), gave us an idea just how cold the southerly must blow through here. After having morning tea, we hit the next track only for me to take a slight detour on a parallel track and then break a left front axle. We limped another kilometre down the road before the axle well and truly gave way. My group stayed with us while the other group carried on. It was here we had two nights with the wind pounding us with sleet and minus degree winds. Yes, it was summer and it was snowing. Can’t even imagine how cold
it must get in the winter. Finally got the necessary parts flown from Tauranga to Dunedin ($795 later) and after fixing the axle and hub, we scrambled back to Ranfurly for the night only for the weather to start clearing. We will never forget how quickly the weather changed and how cold it could get there, and it wasn’t even winter. We would now have to play catch up due to the other group being three days ahead of us. But more car troubles would hit us the next day. More on that in our next chapter. Thor Hein, East Coast 4x4 Super Centre.
