Navara nirvana The best of both worlds Kiwis have a long-standing love for their utes but in recent times these two and four-door trucks have had to up their game. No longer considered as merely a machine to haul cargo, car manufacturers have had to match SUV comfort, safety and equipment. Farmer Auto Village’s Nissan divisional manager Roger Matthews says with more Navaras being used as a family vehicles “the ride has become more comfortable, the interior and exterior more visually appealing and a host of safety and driver assist systems have been added”.
“So the all new the NP300 Navara is perfectly positioned to meet these new-age market demands”.
No more springs
Nissan has set a new precedent with the latest Navara. Gone is the firm ride of the leaf-sprung suspension on double-cab models. This has been replaced by a new five-link coil system which provides a much more refined, SUV-like ride. The independent coils deal with potholes and speedbumps with ease, making it easy to forget you are in an off-road vehicle. However, off the beaten track the NP300 is just as dependable as ever with Nissan’s proven electronically-controlled four-wheel-drive system with three settings: 2Hi, 4Hi, 4Lo and the option of a locking differential.
Award winner
Available in 11 model variants – including six two-wheel drive options and five four-wheel drive offerings – the Bay Driver team was lucky enough to be invited to review the flagship 2.3L diesel ST-X Double Cab 4x4. And who better to put this exciting new ute through its paces than this week’s Bay Driver Peter Wayman. Peter and his wife Helen own Palmers Garden Centre at Bethlehem – and no-one understands the need to own a dualpurpose work and family vehicle than they do. When we pulled in to the Palmers carpark to meet Peter, he asked us: “Isn’t this the new model that just won Ute of the Year?” Well, it actually won the European 2016 International Pick-Up of the Year award to be precise Peter – but we’ll give you that one. Wow, you sure do know your utes. “We’ve been looking to add to our fleet so we have been doing some research,” says Peter.
Inside and outside
One of Peter’s first observations was the length of the new Navara. It is worth noting that dual-cab has one of the longest wheelbases in its segment. Peter also commented on the spacious and well-equipped cabin. “I see they have finally made some more room for the rear passenger.” Peter loved the technology too, it has satellite navigation delivered by a seven-inch touchscreen that’s also the control centre for the audio and communications equipment. “Check this out,” Peter said, as we reversed out of the carpark. “This screen is also the viewer for the reversing camera.” There are cup-holders everywhere and door pockets with bottle-holders,
Palmers Garden Centre co-owner Peter Wayman sizes up the all-new NP300 Navara. a low waistline for better visibility and in the ST-X we even tested an electronically-controlled pane in the rear window, a first for Nissan. “Handy for the fishing rods,” said Peter. Out the back the tray comes standard with a factory bedliner and longitudinal tracks for the four adjustable tie-down hooks – a clever feature carried over from the D40 previous model and the payload is a generous 930kg while the towing capacity is 3.5 tonne – the largest in its class.
Engine and transmission
In the age of engine downsizing, it comes as no surprise the Navara gets a smaller-yet-more-powerful replacement to the previous 2.5-litre single-turbo diesel. The 2.3-litre diesel has two turbochargers in the top-spec line-up, boasting 140kw at 3750rpm and a strong torque output of 450Nm peaking between 1500rpm and 2500rpm. Keeping with its intended off-road market, the dual-range gearing has a deep 2.717:1 ratio that’s responsible for the ute’s excellent off-road performance, especially in muddy or sandy beach conditions that really stretch a vehicle’s ability to maintain momentum.
Ride and handling
On the bitumen the Navara immediately impresses with a smooth and confident ride. Handling is excellent and it feels a lot like an SUV. The 70mm chopped from the ladderframe chassis creates a shorter wheelbase that’s reduced the turning circle, making the ute easier to manoeuvre than its predecessor. The dynamic performance is excellent for this segment. Where a leaf-sprung ute would bounce ungainly over ruts on the beach or on dirt tracks, the Navara keeps its rear wheels on the ground – and that results in plenty of traction and no bogging down. This is the key to the success of this rear suspension system and the decider for buyers. For farmers, tradies, families, off-road enthusiasts or part-time explorers, the back end is remarkably comfortable and ideal for poor traction conditions.
Verdict
The centerpiece of the Navara is its coil-sprung rear suspension; it has a noticeably better ride and offers significant traction advantages. As a family vehicle it offers a lot of room, features and comfort. And as a workhorse it maintains all the aspects that have made it one of most successful commercial vehicles on the market. Expertise and value for money Brian Roderick ready to help you find your dream car.
Brian Roderick knows imported cars inside and out – he’s been selling cars in Tauranga since the 1970s. And if you take a pit-stop at Brian Roderick Motors today, not only will you receive his expertise – you’ll also get value for money. Brian remembers the very first car he sold. “It was in 1972. I worked for the local Holden dealer and it was a brand new Holden Belmont. The price was $3422.” Brian Roderick Motors has been on the corner of Cameron Rd and Sixteenth Ave since 1982 – but Brian’s been selling his own cars since 1978. “I think I’m pretty much the only dealer left in town from the 1970s, it’s been great fun all the way.” One of the first to head to Japan in the mid-1980s, when importing Japanese cars
was emerging on the used cars market, Brian believes the Japanese cars are good value for money. “I just believe they’re the best value for money you can buy on the used car market; that’s what I’ve specialised in since 1988 when I first recognised that.” Testament to that is Brian does a lot of repeat business. “I sell to the grandchildren of customers. “I like to look after people when they buy a car off me; I like to think I go the extra mile.” And look after people Brian does. All of his imported cars have a standard six-month warranty, with verified and certified mileage, a full service; and Brian says he will fix any problems with his cars. “I believe I offer some of the best value for money you can get anywhere in the country.”

Baby boomer’s David’s drive to win championship best prepared Tauranga’s David Holder is driving into Rally Gisborne tomorrow with a six-point lead up his sleeve in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship.
Baby boomer motorists – drivers aged 50-59 – are best prepared for treacherous conditions according to a new survey by one company offering insurance in New Zealand. The IAG Safety Meter Index shows nine out of 10 baby boomers had checked the tread on tyres in the last six months ready for the colder weather. The same number of 50-59-year-olds store a spare tyre and jack in their boot – and more than 80 per cent know how to change a tyre. The survey, conducted through Neighbourly website in April with 748 sharing their views, is aimed at increasing people’s awareness of how to be safer on the road.
winter, which could explain why one in eight say they perform regular checks on tyre pressure, tread and spare tyre. But survey respondents are less concerned over vehicle parts that aren’t so easy to check such as brakes, water level etc. And 62 per cent of all drivers say they do not routinely check their battery before the change of season. While 47 per cent say they had not checked their brakes ready for winter either. And 74.9 per cent say they don’t carry survival items such as extra clothing, food, water and a blanket. “If your mindset is not prepared for winter driving, it could have a serious impact on driving safety,” says Chris. As result, Chris is sharing some tips before hitting the road this winter.
Simple checks
Helpful tips
Other results include a vigilant 93 per cent of baby boomers saying they had checked their windscreen wipers – front and rear – and refilled their wiper fluid bottle before the season had even turned. AMI national technical specialist Chris Kiddey says the survey results are encouraging and show the need for older drivers to pass on their wisdom to the young motorists. The study also shows driver of all ages are most concerned about their tyres during
Listen to local news and announcements from the authorities and check driveways for ice before using them. Drive to the conditions and focus on position within the lane as its untravelled borders may cause loss of control. For example, extra sludge, ice or deeper snow. Remember: any grit spread can help traction but does not provide a surface as safe as a normal dry road, so drive much slower than normal. And make sure your tyres and brakes are in good order.
But with two rounds left – at Gisborne and the Goldrush Rally Coromandel on August 20 – he and co-driver Jason Farmer have to decide on tactics to snatch their first championship. “It’s hard to know whether to go there [Gisborne] and go hard and get the best result we can; or play it safe and drive consistently and let other people fall off the road and see where we are at the end,” says Inset: David Holder.
