Katikati car enthusiast Graham Holley jokes about how he was literally born in a car. phone 07 578 0030 fax 07 571 1116 email ads@thesun.co.nz No.1 The Strand, PO Box 240, Tauranga 3140 www.sunlive.co.nz

“I guess I was just born a petrolhead,” proclaims Graham. “As it happens on the front seat of a ’42 Chev truck.” Over the years Graham has owned dozens of classic vehicles, including a ’42 Chev truck just like the one he was born in. Ironically for the all-American car fanatic, his first car was a 1938 Morris Eight in classic British racing green and white which he bought in 1963. “I completely rebuilt it and painted it in the second year of my apprenticeship as a mechanic. I owned it for a couple of years, lots of great memories.” Graham, who splits his time between the Western Bay and projects working overseas as an engineer, has brought back many cars from America where he was based for 20 years. He also raced midgets and sprint cars while living in the US. “I have brought in five vehicles from the States over the years since I lived there, and it is time to go back for a visit and look for something different to bring home.” While he has sold some of the cars there is no way he will part with the beloved 1967

Since his first car, its been all American for Graham Holley pictured with his ‘67 Chev Impala. Chev Impala he bought about 10 years ago. “I would not even like to hazard a guess at how many hours went into completing the car, although it was two years of late nights after I got it back from the painters.” When Graham first saw the Impala he wasn’t looking for a car for himself and checked it out for a friend who decided against buying it. “I had just bought a car, a ‘56 Pontiac, but then I saw the Impala. It’s quite different with all the body moulds and the interior modifications and it hadn’t been completed. I thought this would be a project worth completing.” Graham plans to display the Impala at Whangamata’s Beach Hop and at Katikati’s Happy Days car show of classic cars, hot rods and bikes on Easter Sun March 31 (from 9.30am, for details call 549 3218). “I try to get home for as many car shows, swap meets and speedway events as I can and love taking the car out on runs.” By Hamish Carter

Inside running on Outlander

Diesel versus petrol – it was a test to see which of the twin Outlanders ran best. Since the Mitsubishi Outlander made its entrance in 2006, it has become New Zealand’s firm favourite – but the test was on when Sideline Sid set out on his mission to see if all the sales brochure hyperbole for the twin all-new Mitsubishi Outlanders actually equalled performance on the road. While farmers in the Western Bay are praying for rain, another beautiful sunny Friday afternoon provided perfect driving conditions for Sid’s latest brief. With more of the features that Kiwis love, Outlander has clocked up more sales than any other mid-sized SUV. Now the more civilised SUV is back with more than ever. First out of the blocks from Bay City Mitsubishi in Cameron Road, was the XLS 4WD Petrol Outlander. Due to his advancing years, Sid needs a thorough briefing on the intricacies of each vehicle before embarking on a test drive. No longer do we have to fumble through pockets for the car keys – the doors are unlocked electronically as you approach the Outlander (with the

key in your pocket) and you just press the button on the dashboard to have the engine roar into life. Later it was the turn of the VRX 4WD Diesel vehicle to hit the road on a test drive. The only discernable difference when driving the two Outlanders was the slight purr of the diesel vehicle. While the specifications of both vehicles are the same, Sideline Sid believes that the Outlander diesel version has a slim edge with slightly superior fuel economy and higher torque (grunt) for towing. However balancing the equation is the lower price of the petrol model. A stylish body shape creates a good first impression. The new Outlander has a modern contemporary look, unlike many of the cars of today that seem to be no more than a stylised bubble. Sitting behind the wheel there is information to burn at your fingertips. The Outlander control panel starts with a touch screen audio system, which combines audio controls and the Bluetooth hands free phone controls, with the VRX having a turn-by-turn satellite navigation system. The information is displayed on a large seven inch touch screen, which is especially appealing for older drivers. However what really grabbed Sideline Sid’s

attention was the rear view reversing camera. As one who has banged into two cars in one day when trying to reverse, the combination of a rear view camera and reversing warning sensors should make banging into freestanding objects a long forgotten memory. Other unique safety features are the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) that kicks in when a vehicle in front alters its speed, with the Outlander radar cruise controls responding with appropriate adjustments of brake or accelerator. The FCM (Forward Collision Mitigation) radar identifies and warns of a potential collision and, if necessary, applies the brakes lessening the chance of a crash. Out on the open road, the only distinguishing factor between the twin Outlanders is that slight purr of the diesel version. Both vehicles are very responsive to a touch of the steering wheel and have acceleration to burn. Versatility is the name of the game inside the Outlander. Leather seats on the VRX are the introduction to driver comfort, unmatched in most vehicles. A driver’s seat with slide, recline and height adjuster, with the VRX having power-assisted adjusters, provides comfort in spades behind the steering wheel. However the space and versatility of seat-

ing is where the new Outlander comes into its own. It’s a five-seater with huge boot space for long trips away, or a family wagon that provides seating for seven utilising the comfortable third row. The Outlander photo shoot provided evidence of the room in the back, with a gaggle of youngsters happily jumping into the back seats for the inside photo shots. The Outlander would also make a grand business vehicle, with the fuel economy making even the bean counters smile. The new Outlander 2.4 petrol engine is nearly 20 per cent more efficient than its predecessor, with equivalent benefits in the diesel model. Major fuel savings are made with Eco Mode which gets the transmission to shift earlier. Final impressions on taking the second Outlander back to Bay City Mitsubishi, were of versatility from an around town family wagon that is also suited to longer family trips but could also easily transform into an all-purpose business vehicle. What would Sideline Sid choose to drive? The only way to answer the dilemma would be a toss of a coin.

Cooper charging ahead

Mount Maunganui motocross rider Cody Cooper is tightening his hold on the MX1 championship after a top event in Patetonga on Sunday. Cody, who races a RM Z450 for Moto City Suzuki, is now 20 points clear at the top of the class standings after the second of four rounds in this season’s national championship series. The seasoned international racer put on another impressive display in the Thames Valley, as he continues his campaign to regain the national title he last held in 2011. Cody is single-handedly keeping the overseas invaders at bay as a trio of international stars – Scottish former Grand Prix hero Billy MacKenzie and Australian pair Todd Waters and Kirk Gibbs – nip at his rear wheel. Billy is second in the standings and the two Australians third and fourth respectively, while in fifth position is the next best of the Kiwi

contingent: former national motocross and supercross champion Daryl Hurley (Action Suzuki RM-Z450), of Hawera. Moto City Suzuki team manager Andrew Hardisty, of Mount Maunganui, said that Cody’s dominance was a reflection of all the hard work he has been putting in during the past few months. “Cody rode really well on Sunday. The bike’s suspension settings are something we are still tweaking and we didn’t have it quite right for his final race of the day, where he finished second to MacKenzie.” His Mount Maunganui MX2 team mate Rhys Carter had mixed results, winning the first race before a couple of crashes cost him dearly in the following races (finishing fourth in race two and 11th in the third race). He finished fourth overall on the day and moved up to be third in the series. The series now heads to Pukekohe on March 10 before finishing in Taupo on March 31.

Chopper cruises into town A personal business trip to the US opened the door to a dream for motoring enthusiast Paul Collins. The Farmer Motor Group business manager, who returned two months ago from five months working in Memphis, had his eyes out for a few “toys” when he flew into Memphis, but has come back with more than he imagined. After checking out a few Harley Davidsons he heard of a one-off Orange County Chopper for sale in Nashville. Made famous by the TV programme ‘American Chopper’, the Orange County machines are highly sought after and something Paul knew was worth a look. “But I didn’t

expect it to be anywhere like as good as it was,” recalls Paul, who was particularly taken with the level of detail on the bike that boasts a nine foot stretch from tip to tail. Just as impressive was the low mileage on the 2006 bike – with only 1700 miles clicked up on what was primarily a display bike for the Ellensboro Volunteer Fire Department in West Virginia. “The artwork on everything is very impressive. The detail of the Orange County

Chopper is what makes make them the benchmark.” In particular, he loves how the wheels and disc-brakes were carved with matching artwork on billett alloy using a water-cutting CNC machine. Paul, who was familiar with the bikes from the programme, was particularly impressed with the blue and yellow flame paint work which was one of the last paint jobs the legendary Nub did for Orange County Choppers

before the father and son team broke the business in two. “It makes it pretty special. It carries a bit of history with it. Anyone who has been following the show will appreciate that.” He took it for a couple of short rides before packing it up to return home, and quickly learnt – with the long front wheel extension – it pays to choose your route to avoid tight corners. The chopper has a 1600 rev-tech engine, a Baker five-speed gearbox, does 110 hp and has a speedo that goes up to 140 mph (but Paul is unsure of its maximum speed). He does not know of any other Orange County Choppers in New Zealand and hopes to display it at various shows including the upcoming Whangamata Beach Hop. It will be on display at Farmer Auto Village’s Dodge showroom until Saturday (March 2). By Hamish Carter

Ford family reunion

Nina Englert expected great interest from Kiwis who had been waiting a long time for the availability of xDrive on a car in the Touring range. “We’re delighted to be able to offer it as part of our new model portfolio. We have high expectations that these models will establish themselves as the ultimate all-wheel drive sports wagon in the premium segment, as they are the perfect vehicle for an active outdoors-orientated Kiwi lifestyle.”

Bill Ward’s Kiwi A Salt, which raced on the Bonneville flats, will be on display at the All Ford Day.

Ford fans are in for a treat this Sunday with the annual All Ford Day at Blake Park. Organisers hope the show will attract 300 entries in classes ranging from vintage to competition, commercials and hot rods. Ford Muscle Club president Barry Gordon is expecting entries from around

the North Island and expects it to be a fun day for all. Highlights will include the rear-engine modified Bonneville car Kiwi A Salt that Bill Ward raced to become the first New Zealander competing on the US salt flats at Bonneville in 1979. Gates open to the public at 10am, with prize-giving set to start at 2.30pm. Cars can be entered on the day from 8am or phone Barry, 0272 010 428.

Rodder revival next weekend

Classic hot rods and bikes will be on display at the Mount next Sunday at the third annual Bay of Plenty Coastal Cruisers Bike and Hot Rod Show. Club president Mike Cochrane is hoping for a display of 200 vehicles from throughout Bay of Plenty and Waikato, with a focus on classic American hot

rods and British and American motorbikes. The show, at Cherokee Place Reserve (off Aerodrome Rd), will run on Sunday March 10 from 10am-2pm. Vehicles can be entered on the day from 8am. To register, or for more details, phone Mike, 0276 082 081.

All fired up for charity bash After hitting the road for two small fundraising adventures during the past two years, Tauranga’s newest Variety Bash team are fuelling up for the ultimate road trip next weekend.

Little Boys Dream team, which takes a fire truck on the annual big bash every year, Morris was keen to follow in the Tauranga team’s tracks. On Saturday (March 9) the two teams will convoy off together in their fire trucks to the Chateau, for the start-of the week-long rally and fundraising adventure. “It’s like being in a parade of all these weird and wacky, wonderful vehicles and even weirder people driving around the countryside raising money. We shake buckets, give out grants and make a lot of people smile.” As one of more than six fire truck crews going on the rally, out of about 24 teams, The 8th Tribe members will be involved

Morris Danks (Moo Moo), captain of ‘The 8th Tribe’ team, says everyone in the six-member team is excited about heading off on the annual fundraising trip for Variety the Children’s Charity of New Zealand. “We’re all very excited about it. Since fixing the truck up we’ve taken it on two mini bashes to try to create an identity for ourselves. It’s been lots of fun and great preparation for this, our first big Variety Bash.” Inspired by the experience of friends in Every

in many water fights along the way. Since buying the 1981 international fire truck two years ago, the crew - with the help of sponsors - have made some modifications to the truck, including replacing the industrial hose pump with a smaller pump ideal for water fights. “When we go past we can give the kids at schools a little squirt.” Morris describes the truck, which had been in service at Shelly Beach north-west of Auckland, as “gold”. “She’s an ’81 so we need to give it lots of special care and attention.” He says fire trucks have become popular on the bash because they can carry up to 10 people and offer good entertainment value. The six member crew taking to the road

includes Paul Bainbridge (Sarge), Tasha Stone (Tash), Leigh Warburton (La La), Andrea Berghan (Andy) and Tayla Arkwright (TaLah). “You can go to a community event then all these fire trucks rock up and all of a sudden they’ve got their hoses out and you’ve got a waterfight going on.” From The Chateau, the seven-day odyssey will head through Waipukurau, before crossing to Picton, and on to Akaroa before finishing in Kaikoura. “Along the way we rock up to schools and have a bit of a presentation with the celebrities who come along. “Then normally as we leave we like to find a safe place on the school field then the fire trucks can go at each other, racing around for a mobile water fight. It’s pretty impressive.” The team hopes to raise $5000, with all money raised helping sick, disabled or disadvantaged children with medical or mobility equipment or educational initiatives to help children reach their potential. He says help from sponsors including Kidicorp, Gaming Inc, Red Ant, Steel Fab and Imbibe made it possible. The crew is fundraising with a ‘Boogie Wonderland’ 70s night at Imbibe on Saturday (March 2). For details go to www.firetruck.org.nz By Hamish Carter
