Mazda the soul of motion The modern Mazda vehicles are said to be built upon a foundation of imagination and ingenuity. Sideline Sid’s latest car review mission was to try out a Mazda CX-5 GSX from the Ultimate Motor Group in Mount Maunganui, to see if the Mazda SUV lives up to the manufacturer’s claims.
The energetic leap of a cheetah reflected in the Mazda CX-5, with elegant lines, graceful details and a well-planted footprint make it stand proudly apart from other SUVs. Ingenuity in the Mazda CX-5 is provided by the SKYACTIV Technology, which reduces the vehicle’s weight helping to unleash agility more in keeping with a sports car. The dual exhausts with chrome extensions continue the sports car qualities of the Mazda CX-5. Sculpted and shaped without compromise The result of the Mazda imagination and is the start of the Mazda CX-5 imagination. ingenuity is a five-seat family SUV, which It’s a result of a Mazda ethos named Kodo, can meet the multiple challenges of which in effect means ‘soul of motion’. today’s world. in a traffic jam and temporarily shuts down the engine. The slightest touch of the accelerator results in the engine roaring back into action, thereby saving fuel and CO2 emissions. A further SKYACTIV feature is the six-speed automatic transmission that couples directly to the engine, over a far wider range than other automatics. Gear shifts are quick, accurate and smooth across the six speeds. The small electric parking brake right next to the gear shift is a perfect example of Mazda innovation. Driver comfort is assured, with front seats that slide and adjust with ease, with the driver’s seat having an additional height adjustment and drivers lumbar support. Driving in inclement conditions is made easy with front fog lamps, automatic headlamps and two-speed rain-sensing wipers. A big driver’s rear view mirror with autodimming function is complemented with two large power-fold exterior mirrors. Personal comfort on the road is provided by dual zone climate control, with easy to operate buttons, under the 7-inch colour touchscreen controls that also contain a brilliant satellite navigation system. The online link with Bluetooth, phone and audio connectivity keeps in touch with the outside world. However, what really caught the reviewer’s eye was the multiple driver aids. The rear camera and parking sensors were just the start.
The I-ACTIVE Sense Safety Technologies provide a suite additional safety features. Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert gives plenty of warning about encroaching vehicles. The Mazda CX-5 features an extremely rigid body, giving world class collision protection. Six SRS air-bags are integrated, including side front bags and curtain bags, front and rear. Seatbelt reminders feature throughout, while the front seats have pre-tensioners and load-limiters. Dynamic Stability Control is standard. The powerful disc brakes are equipped with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist. What the intrepid reviewer really likes about the Mazda CX-5 is the versatility of the SUV. Three comfortable rear seats with a plenty of headroom and a multitude of legroom are custom-made for long-distance motoring. The boot on the Mazda CX-5 can only be described as huge, which can swallow four big golf bags. For even more storage there is a 60/40 rear seat fold down, with an easy opening tail-gate that integrates a tonneau cover, shielding the boot space from the sun or prying eyes. Peace of mind motoring is provided by the Mazdacare five-year – or 100,000km – free servicing and the five-year unlimited kilometre warranty. The Mazda CX-5 will appeal to families wanting a versatile around town vehicle or the more discerning motorist that desires a quality vehicle at an affordable price, which is also fuel efficient.

Cruise the Fourth of July
American cars in all their glory will be cruising the streets of Tauranga as part of the Bay Rodders’ Independence Day Cruise tomorrow evening. Photo: Bay Rodders
If you go all red, white and blue over classic and modern American cars then come and celebrate Independence Day with the Bay Rodders car club this Fourth of July. Tomorrow evening owners of American cars of all shapes and sizes will be turning out in their droves and out cruising the streets to celebrate the US of A. Bay Rodder Cathi Barker says Independence Day really gets the club’s members engines roaring. “Independence Day is a celebration that we like to take part in because America is the home of our cars,” says Cathi. “We have pride in owning these American cars and like to show the respect we have for the era and the country that these cars came from.
“Typically, there is a great turnout of cars, so keep your eyes open for us in our red, white and blue cruising on Saturday.” Organising the Independence Day run are Bay Rodder members Keith Sawyer and Graham Collier, who say this event is open to absolutely anyone and everyone who owns an American cars. Cars and their owners will be dressed up in red, white and blue and will gather at Noel Leeming on Cameron Rd in Tauranga at 6.30pm. The run will see cars do a cruise together around town and end up at Worlds End, Fraser Cove, for a meal and catch up with friends. Bay Rodders’ American Independence Day Cruise is on tomorrow from 6.30pm. For more information, visit www.bayrodders.co.nz

The best British vehicles under the Sun
Tauranga’s Stephen and Janice Belcher, winners of ‘Best Car of Show’ prize at the 2014 Classic Cover Brits at the Beach Festival. Photo: Brent Shaw/www.kiwimotoring.com
SunMedia, owners of Bay Driver, will be the official media partner of the popular 2015 Classic Cover Brits at the Beach Festival in Whangamata. Brits is a celebration of everything British, including cars, bikes, music, food and culture, all in a beachside village fete setting from October 8-11. The best British cars from throughout New Zealand parade through the town and the Coromandel Peninsula, with last year’s festival seeing 700 vehicles registered. In the last five years the festival has seen more than one century’s worth of British motoring history, from a fabulous 1913 Humberette to the British High Commissioners elegant new Jaguar. Organiser Col McCabe says Whangamata is wellknown for embracing New Zealanders’ love affair with cars, as it’s the home of the hugely popular Beach Hop festival in March. “Brits offers another side of our Kiwi motoring his-
tory,” says Colin. “The Brits car lover is very different to the Beach Hopper; it’s chalk and cheese. “Beach Hoppers are loud and flashy, Brits owners are more reserved and want their cars to look like they’ve just left the showroom.” Colin is always amazed at the breadth and quality of cars showing up each year, along with being chuffed the youngsters also coming with their Angle Boxes, Cortinas and Capris. Some festival highlights include the opening night Whisky Dinner, Drive-in Movie, Pink Floyd and Bee Gee tribute band shows and the organised drives to Thames, Tairua and Pauanui. “The Village Fete, which is held on the Saturday, is always a blast with some very funny British games and a $1000 Best British Costume Parade,” says Colin. “The funds we raise from the Village Fete will be donated to local junior sport organisations.” For more information, a full programme of events or to register a stall or British vehicle – opens to cars, bikes, trucks, bicycles, commercial or military vehicles – see www.britsatthebeach.co.nz By David Tauranga

Bay of Plenty still the power base The power base for New Zealand motocross remains in the Bay of Plenty after the sixth annual Battle of the Clubs Motocross event at Taupo last weekend. The Tauranga Motorcycle Club won the event outright, becoming the fifth club to take the title since its inception in 2010 and the fourth club from the Bay of Plenty region. The six-rider Tauranga crew of Cody Cooper, Darryll King, Aaron Wiltshier, Tyler Steiner, Josh Tredinnick and Brodie Connolly were all in scintillating form and dominated the event. Team manager Bridgette Tolfrey says last year all their top riders were racing in Australia when the event was held. “Winning this event has really put the spotlight on our club; and of course it’s a great honour and a thrill.” Steiner was the best-performing individual at the event, winning both the combined junior 250cc and 85cc race, and combined junior 250ss and 125cc race. MX1 class rider Cooper finished 2-1 in his two outings after a couple of epic battles with fellow former national MX1 champion rider Ben Townley. “It was weird actually,” says Cooper, “because we were sharing the track with a lot of riders we don’t normally race against. So it was difficult to keep the flow going when we came around to lappers”. “This event is so important as a fundraiser for us, to send a squad to the Motocross of Nations in France in September, but it’s quite a relaxed event too and a lot of fun.” Cooper and Townley are both on the short-list of six riders being considered for the three-rider squad to France and the announcement of Team NZ will be made in the coming weeks. Host Taupo Motorcycle Club president Stu Groombridge says about $10,000 was raised last weekend, mostly from rider entry fees and donations from spectators. By Andy McGechan

Katrina says for the children, growing up with speedway was something they shared with their dad. “The old speedway used to be on our backdoor, we used to go through the hole in the fence. “For dad, racing was for the fun of it – but it was always competition when he

World’s fastest woman heads to NZ The world’s fastest woman on four wheels, American Jessi Combs, will be heading to New Zealand for next month’s CRC Speedshow.
American Jessi Combs, seen here with North American Eagle, will be at the CRC Speedshow on July 18-19. Showcasing the finest, fastest and coolest new and classic cars, motorcycles, wild hot rods and custom creations, The CRC Speedshow is on at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds on July 18-19. Jessi’s CV includes piloting the ‘North American Eagle’ to a top speed of 708km/h on the dry lakebed in Alvord Desert, Oregon in 2013 – breaking the previous record set back in 1965. Jessi will front the Speedshow’s Women in Motorsport display and says she can’t get to New Zealand quick enough for the show. “It’s wonderful to be involved in an event
that highlights a huge part of my personal mission to encourage women into motorsports. “It is always empowering to be surrounded by other women who are the ‘real deal’ – those who are out there building their own cars and bikes, getting behind the wheel, and making a name for themselves in the industry.” Jessi is a CRC Industries ambassador and has inspired millions with her creative and practical skills on TV shows such as ‘All Girls
Garage’, ‘Mythbusters’ and ‘Overhaulin’. She’s also an Ultra4 National Champion, taking the Queen of the Hammers title in one of the toughest off-road races in the world, and is also a Baja 1000 podium finisher. During the CRC Speedshow, Jessi will feature as a guest judge for the Teng Tools Grand National Rod and Custom Show, featuring nearly 50 of NZ’s best custom vehicles. She’ll also compete against Australasia’s best racing talent in the Right Karts Celebrity Charity Kart Challenge on the Saturday of
the show. For more information about the CRC Speedshow, see www.speedshow.co.nz By David Tauranga

Forty years in the making Ivan Allen could have built the Taj Mahal twice over in the time his own miniscule by comparison rebuilding project has taken him. “I am not finished yet,” says Ivan reassuringly. “But I’m not far from finished.” The distraught Emperor Shah Jahan built the white marble mausoleum for his late favourite wife in 20 years. Ivan’s motorbike, his living love, has taken more than 40 years to rebuild. Or thereabouts. That’s not quite fair though – because Ivan has only given the project his full focus and commitment for the last 18 months. “For 40 years I was collecting a lot of bits which were missing and that I knew I would need. And 18 months ago I had enough bits to do what I wanted to do.” However, from conception to this point where he’s just waiting for some parts to be nickel-plated, has been about 50 years. And “enough bits” is what Ivan needed to get started rebuilding the 1928 350cc overhead valve Humber motorbike. It’s not a pretty machine and it’s not fast. After climbing through the three-speed gear box the rider probably still wouldn’t be going fast enough to mess their hair or make their eyes water – 80km/h maximum perhaps. But there was no point in having a motorbike that went fast in those days. “The roads weren’t good enough.” And the bits still missing? “I would make them.” He is handy this Ivan. After 50 years, time became the essence.
“It’s creeping on,” says this fatalistic retiree. “I thought I better get my A into G and do it. Otherwise, I’m not going to see it done either.” Humber motorbikes are rare birds. Ivan knows of no others in New Zealand, there is one unrestored in Australia, three or four running in England and one in Denmark. “They’re thin on the ground.” I thought Humber built cars Ivan – the Humber Super Snipe, the Humber Hawk, the Humber 80 and later under the Rootes Group banner, the Hillman Minx and Hillman Hunter? They did, but only after manufacturing bicycles. Then in 1896 they produced the first practical motorbike by fitting a two horsepower engine to a bicycle. And it looked just like that – a bicycle with an engine screwed on. “The depression came along and things were hard to sell,” says Ivan. So when non-essentials like motorbikes weren’t selling well, they stopped making them. And that’s exactly what the Rootes Group did when they took over Humber in 1930. “My Humber is a 1928 – two years from the end of the line.” So it’s a valuable machine. Valuable but bum-numbingly basic. “You have got girder forks and rigid frame – no springs in the back end.” The only springs are what God gave you – your backside. “It’s a hard ride – she’s very bony in the backend.” Ivan has a love/hate relationship with motorbikes. His first was a BSA Bantam – he got at age 15. It cost him four quid – four pounds 10

shillings to be exact – a whole week’s wages. “Awful damned thing. Bloody two stroke! Go up a hill and it would cough, bang, back fire and seize up.” I bet that wasn’t in the manufacturer’s notes. After BSA experience Ivan did the unthinkable. He bought the Humber – the ghost of a Humber. “No, it wasn’t going.” Which is delightfully understating the situation because it was just a pile of scrap, a pile of “bits”. There was an engine, frame, gearbox, petrol tank, back wheel and back mudguard. Well, most of a back mudguard. But remember, he’d have 40 years to find the other “bits” and what he couldn’t find he would make. Now he’s within cooee of finishing his life’s work – well half his life’s work. Those “bits” are in being nickel-plated. “The price of nickel plating would scare you to death.” And when that’s done, it’ll only be a few months before the 1928 350cc overhead valve Humber motorbike is up and sputtering. And a “few months” is nothing in the scheme of things. “I will have spent several thousand dollars on it of course. But that’s well within its restored value.” And you don’t count the man hours. It’s a labour of love. “It’s the pleasure of rebuilding something – saving something – recreating a bit of history.”
And for that he deserves our gratitude I suppose. Now what’s interesting is Ivan’s personal satisfaction seems to stop short. He hasn’t given a thought to taking this meek beast out for its maiden run. “It’s one of those things – when the job’s done, it’ll be done. “I don’t think about riding it.” However, I suspect there will be many others in the Tauranga Vintage Car Club who’ll take immense pleasure from Ivan winding up the Humber and kicking it over, kicking it back into life. Then, if the job is done, as he says it will be, what will Ivan do with his days? By Hunter Wells
