Premium sedans make sense The last few years have seen big changes in the types of vehicles that we drive. From highly popular SUV models to hatchbacks and the new fleet of people movers that seem to be taking over our roads, it’s clear that our tastes and motoring needs are changing with the times. So what has become of the humble family sedan? How many can still be found among the thousands of vehicles for sale out there and who is buying them? Bay Driver had a scout around our advertisers’ yards this week and discovered that for many people, a good sized, well-spec’d sedan is still their first choice for getting from ‘A to B’ in comfort and safety. We also found that there is good selection of pre-owned sedans available locally that are loaded with the latest technology, safety and comfort features to make driving a lot less stressful – and in some cases, a lot easier to park with reversing cameras and parking sensors. Like all other types of vehicles, prices can vary widely and naturally depend on the level of specification. For this story, we sought out a small selection of cars that offer affordable luxury with features that are a cut above many others, while still offering pretty good value for money. Local motorists are also reminded by our dealers that buying a used imported sedan before the end of the year would be very wise, given that changes to government import restrictions come in to place on January 1, 2012, which will make some vehicles harder to find and almost certainly more expensive to buy. Appealing to a new generation With its handsome profile the Lancer SEi retains some of the ‘edgy’ looks of its bigger brother, the VRX.

If you were to take a survey among your wider family, it is very likely someone, your mum, your gran, an aunt or an uncle, will have owned a Lancer at some stage in their driving life. Next to the Corolla, the Lancer would have been one of New Zealand’s favourite small cars throughout the 80s and earlier 90s. It was re-styled a couple of years ago and has been a good seller. Now, Mitsubishi have turned things up a few more notches with the latest Lancer SEi model – re-vamped and back to win a few new hearts. Returning in sedan and hatch guise,

The SEi does, however, inherit the good looks of the VRX, with Mitsubishi making a conscious effort to deliver a style that stands out without being over the top. The grille and headlight assembly gives it an assertive road presence with a bit of an ‘EVO edge’, but the body styling just oozes class and sophistication – something often missing on these smaller sedans. It also offers a very occupant friendly drive, with excellent road noise dampening thanks to the low noise, soft ride alloys and an extra focus on absorptive materials.

Comfort plus

Inside, the Lancer SEi is very well-finished, with the ebony piano-look plastics giving a classy appeal, while the soft touch surfaces on the doors enhance the luxury feel to the cabin. It would also be hard to find a vehicle for under $30,000 that offers this

reversing camera nicely integrated into the rear view mirror. But it is also under the hood where the Mitsubishi techies have been working hard at re-inventing the Lancer.

Even though the MIVEC engine claims 10-12 per cent greater efficiency at 7.3L/100km, there is no sacrifice in power or delivery with that economy. The SEi’s 2.0 litre engine delivers excellent open road performance through its CVT transmission with no suspicious “hunting” as the transmission sorts out the best zone to operate in. It simply matches itself smoothly and quietly to the engine’s demands under acceleration. The SEi also includes the SmartBrake system, now inclusive on all new Mitsubishi vehicles. It is a clever bit of software that will ensure when

Fundraising for better travel Travelling from Te Puna across the Bay of Plenty and beyond every day, every week would take its toll on any vehicle – and after nearly 10 years, Avalon Incorporated is retiring one of its mini vans. The old van is being replaced by a brand new Ford Transit worth $57,000. The 11-seater (12 including driver) provides Avalon trainees with the transport they require on a daily basis. Training coordinator Stuart Gray says the old van was becoming a health and safety risk, being cold, run down and out of date – no longer suitable for the high usage of every day and long distance travelling. “We use these vans constantly,” says Stuart. “We often take trainees to Auckland or on outings to the Waitomo caves, Waihi gold mine and just for general use to the library or hot pools. “We also use the vans to pick up the trainees and take them home again daily.” Trainees also undertake volunteering for the Te Puke Recycle centre, Meals on Wheels and street appeal collecting. Avalon Incorporated is a charitable trust and a development centre

based in Te Puna where people with disability can reach their potential. With more than 100 trainees, this is an opportunity for them to get access to community-based activities, a sense of confidence and self worth. Avalon offers business enterprise, personal life experiences and NZQA training. Bethlehem Te Puna Lions, with the assistance of Ultimate Motor Group, have been working hard since September to raise the full expenses required to purchase the van. Te Puna Lions president Brian Wright says they were approached by Avalon to support renewing the van and since they began have raised more than $20,000 through raffles, market days and business sponsorship. “We though it is a good cause, that many people will get the benefit from,” says Brian. “It is a great job they do for the people, with their services aiding the majority of their trainees to get into the work force.” The major fundraiser is ongoing through to mid December with a raffle for two nights for two people at luxury apartments in Taupo.
