andpeacekeepingoperations.The AnzacDaydawnserviceinKatikati willbeheldonApril25,at6amatthe KatikatiWarMemorialHall.

Theservicewillbeprecededbya dawnparadethatstartsat5.45am fromtheTalismanHotelandmarches tothememorialhall.

Followingtheservice,membersof thepublicareinvitedtotheKatikati BowlingClub.

EveryyearonApril25thereare opportunitiesacrossthecountry tohonourmenandwomenwho haveservedinwarsatAnzacDay ceremonies.

Thisyearisparticularlypoignantasit hasbeen110yearssincetheGallipoli landingand80yearssincetheend ofWorldWarII,saidKatikatiRSA presidentTrevorGilbert.

“Lestweforget,”Gilbertsaid.

“It’simportanttohonourthosewho haveservedastherearemanyofus,not justthetwoworldwars,there’sbeen manyconflictssincetheendofWorld W WarII.” ”

NewZealandhascommemoratedthe GallipolilandingeversinceandAnzac Dayhasbeenapublicholidaysince1921. KatikatihasbeenholdingAnzacservices sinceWorldWarI,Gilbertsaid.

Fivecommunity boardstoremain inWesternBay

TheWaihīBeach communityboard boundarieswillstaythe sameforthenexttwo elections.

TheWesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncil’sproposal toreducecommunityboardstothreehasbeenoverruled bytheLocalGovernmentCommission.

Theproposalcamefromarepresentationreviewand would have aligned community boards within ward

wouldhavealignedcommunityboardswithinward boundaries.

Ithadbeenstronglyopposedbytheboards,whosaidit woulddiminishtheircommunityvoices.

ThecommissionheardanappealinMarch,and commissionersBrendanDuffy,BonitaBighamand GwenBullreleasedtheirdecisionlastweek.

Itsaidtherewerecompellingreasonstokeeptheclearly defined“communitiesofinterest”andexpandthereach ofcommunityboardstoensurecoverageacrossthe district.

Entiredistrictcovered

Thecommissionconsideredhowitcoulddelivera district-widecommunityboardmodelthatpreservedthe essenceofexistingboards.

Underthenewstructure,WaihīBeachandKatikati communityboardswillkeeptheircurrentboundaries.

ŌmokoroawouldexpandtocoverthefullKaimaiward andberenamedŌmokoroa–KaimaiCommunityBoard.

TePukewouldaddPaengaroa,Pongakawa,and PukehinatoitsrepresentationandbenamedTePuke–East.MaketuCommunityBoardwouldexpandits boundaryslightly.

Thechangesmeanttheentiredistrictwouldbecovered byacommunityboardexceptforMatakanaand RangiwaeaIslands.Currently,about40%ofthedistrict isnotrepresentedbyaboard.

Acommunityboardisagroupofelectedmembers whorepresenttheinterestsoftheirareaandactasalink betweenthecommunityandthecouncil.

WaihīBeachCommunityBoardchairwomanDani Simpsonsaidthedecisionwas“phenomenal”andher boardwaspleasedwiththeoutcome.

“It’sfantasticthatthecommissionersreallyunderstood wherewewerecomingfrom.”

Therewerealotofunitedviewsfromthedistrict’s communityboards,andthecommission’sdecision showedtherewasstrengthinnumbers,Simpsonsaid.

Thethree-boardproposalwas“diminishing”the community’svoiceand“erodingademocracy”,shesaid. Thecommissionheardappealsfrom10submitters, allbutoneagainstchangingthenumberofcommunity boards.

TePukeCommunityBoardchairwomanKassieEllis said they put up a “good fight” at the hearing and spoke

saidtheyputupagoodfightatthehearingandspoke truetotheircommunity.“I’mallforthatlocalised approachandwantingwhat’sbestforourcommunity.”

Paengaroa,Pongakawa,andPukehinadeserved communityboardrepresentation,Ellissaid.

Shewasinterestedtoseewhowouldrunforthose communitiesintheOctoberelection.“We[theboard] arelookingforwardtowhatthefutureholds.”

Benefittedcommunities

WesternBayMayorJamesDenyersaidthe commission’sdecisionbenefittedlocalcommunities.

“We’repleasedtoseetheoutcomedeliversdistrictwidecommunityboardcoverage—somethingcouncil andourcommunitystronglysupported,”hesaidin astatement.“Withfiveboardsnowspanningthe district,everycommunitywillhaveastrongerandmore equitableplatformtoengagewithcouncilandadvocate forwhatmattersmosttothem.”

Thecommissionrecommendedthecouncilengageand educatethecommunityabouttheroleandpurposeof theboards.

Thecouncilwasalsoencouragedtoempowerthe boardswithmoredelegations.

BeforetheOctoberelections,thecouncilwouldreview communityboardfunctionsanddelegationstoensure theywereequippedtoenhancelocaldecision-making andsupportcommunity-ledinitiatives.

Denyersaidthiswasanopportunitytostrengthenlocal leadershipandbuildamoreconnectedandengaged district.

“Communityboardswillbewell-positionedtowork alongsideexistinggroups,suchasratepayerassociations, toensurelocalvoicesareheard.”

Thenewrepresentationmodelwouldalsoreducethe numberofcouncillorsatthetablefrom11plusthe mayortonineplusthemayor.

AMāoriwardwouldbeestablished,representedbyone councillor,thatcoveredtheentiredistrict,calledWaka

KaiUruward.Thesechangeswouldbeinplaceforthe Octobercouncilelections.

ThecouncilreaffirmeditsdecisiontoestablishaMāori wardinSeptember.

Areferendumwillbeheldwiththeelectiononwhether theMāoriwardshouldremain.

Waveofharbourupgradesontheway

Workisunderwaytoreplace thedecades-oldjettyatUretara LandingReserveinKatikati withanewstructurenearlyfour timesitssize.

Thenew60m2jettywillbea similardesigntotheexistingjetty, whichislocatedonBeachRd,but muchlargerandbuiltwithmore durable,modernmaterials,said WesternBayofPlentyDsitrict Councilreservesandfacilities managerPeterWatson.Ithas alsobeendesignedtowithstand liquefactioneffectsintheeventofan earthquake.

Watsonsaidoncethejettyis completed,thesitewillbetidied upandsomenewparkfurniture installed.

“Duringconstruction,thejetty siteandadjacentboatrampwillbe closed.

“Theesplanadereservepathway, betweenStateHighway2and NobleJohnstonDrive,willremain open,buttheremaybesomeminor disruptions.”

Itisoneofseveralcoastalstructure renewalsbytheWesternBayof PlentyDistrictCouncilalongthe harbourfromAthenreetoTePuna, whichareexpectedtobecompleted bytheendofJune2025,Watson said.

AthenreeJetty,adjoiningRoretana Drive,isalsobeingreplaced.

“Followingcommunityengagement lastyear,thenewjettywillbethe samesizeasthecurrentjetty,butat alowerheighttomeethealthand safetyregulationswhichhavebeen

Katikati’screativehubisgettingsomemuch-needed attention,withweather-damagedpartsoftheArtsJunction buildingbeingrepairedduringthenextfewmonths.

Theworkwillfixissuesprimarilyaffectingthefront entrancewayandsouthernwallandwillseetheglass entrancewaypermanentlyremoved.

Thebuilding,whichisownedbyWesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncilandleasedtotheArtsJunction,willremain openthroughouttherepairs,withaccessviathebackdoor entrance.

FencingandsignagewillgoupafterEaster,withwork scheduledtobeginonMondayApril28.Therepairsare expectedtobefinishedbytheendofAugust.

TheArtsJunctionisahubforcreativityandconnectionin Katikatiandtheserepairsareimportanttoensurethebuilding remainssafe,dryandwelcomingforthemanypeoplewho useit,saidWesternBayofPlentyDistrictCounciloperations managerKerrieLittle.“Weknowhowmuchthecommunity valuestheArtsJunction,sokeepingitopenandaccessible

“Thesestructureshaveservedtheir purposeformanyyears,butthey’ve reachedtheendoftheirusefullife,” saidWatson.

“Weliveinacommunitywherethe harbourisabigpartofourlifestyle. Theupgradesareaboutmakingsure ourcoastalspacesaresafe,accessible andenjoyableforeveryone.

“Thenewjettieswillmakeiteasier forpeopletogetoutonthewater, whilereplacingtheseawalls willhelpprotectourharbour marginandreserves,sopeoplecan keepenjoyingandusingthesespaces foryearstocome.”

Adviceonhowtto prevent falls

HatoHoneStJohn’sinauguralFallsAwareness Dayeducationaleventhasbeendeemedahuge success,withmorethan100peopleattending theexpoinTaurangaonApril1.

AsecondAwarenessDayhappenedinTePukeon April9–andforthoseinterested,thereisoneevent lefttoattend–inKatikationTuesday,April29.

“DuringAprilFallsmonth,we’vebroughttogether peoplewhocaneducateseniorsonhowtoavoidfalls, howtofallsafelyandwhattodoiftheydofall,”said HatoHoneStJohncommunityengagementofficer BereniceLangson.

Theeventadvisesthatpreventativemeasuresarekey –sotominimisetheriskoffallspeopleshouldensure goodlightingintheirhome,removetrippinghazards, installgrabbarsinbathrooms,andwearsupportive shoes.

“Tofallsafelyasasenior,ifyoufeelyourselflosing balance,trytorelaxyourbody,tuckyourchinto protectyourhead,andaimtolandonyoursideto minimiseimpact,keepingyourkneesandelbows slightlybenttoabsorbthefall,”Langsonsaid.

“Andavoidstiffeningup–trytorollwiththefall insteadofbracingyourselfdirectlyontheground,” saidLangson,whohadarangeofspeakersplanned fortheexpostosharethistypeofinformationwith BayofPlentyseniors.

“Anotherthingis–ifyouexperiencefrequentfalls orhaveconcernsaboutyourbalance,consultyour doctortoaddressunderlyingissuesandtodiscuss furtherfallpreventionstrategies.”

AttendeesatTauranga’sApril1expoLindaBendall andMaureenShanlyhavebothsufferedfallsin thepast.

“Theexpohasgivenmesomefabulousinformation likegoingtoexerciseclassesandwheretogetafree hearingtest,”saidShanly.“Ilearnedwaystoimprove mybalancebydoingsimpleexercisesathomeand watchingwhereIwalkwhenI’moutside.”

Bendall,whoalreadydoesexerciseclasses,hasbeen told“becauseofmyfitnessthatIhaven’tbroken anythingwhenI’vefallen”.

“I’vehitmychintwice,though.It’sascary experience.”

AccordingtostatisticsfromAgeConcern,about oneinthreepeopleaged65-plusinNewZealand willhaveafalleveryyear.“Wewantedtogivepeople advicetopreventfallsinthefuture,”saidLangson. “We’velearnedthathearinglosscanaffectbalance, strengtheningexercisesshouldbestartedinour 50sandcontinueasweageandthereismobility equipmenttohelp.”

ScottandSarahAdamson,whoare keenfisherpeople,wereencouragedby friendsatabarbecueinMarchtohost afishingcompforyoungsters.

“Friendssaid:“Youguysshoulddo onesincethere’sisn’talocalcompthis year.Wejustkindofwent:‘Ohwell there’snotonehappening,solet’sdo one!’”

ButwithEaster,Anzacandduck shootingcomingup,theyhadto chooseadatebeforethen.“We wantedtohaveacompetitionbefore theharbourfishingquietenstoo–so wethought:‘Okaylet’sdoitinthree weeks’time!’”

Withacommitteeofsix–plustheir partners–theAdamsonsgottowork gettingwordoutandorganisingthe inauguralKidsHunting&Fishing CompetitionforApril11-13.

“Wehonestlydidn’tthinkwe’d get100kids–oursignwritermade enoughmaterialfor150goodie bags[oneforeachparticipant]sowe aimedforthat.Andwegot153kids entered!”

Thecommitteealsomanagedto secure$10,000worthofprizesto giveawayfromavarietyofbusinesses –mainlyfromKatikati.“Wemade surewehadaheapofprizessoevery kidwalkedawaywithaspotprizeat prizegiving.”

Thecompetitionwasopentokids13 andunder,andofferedcategoriesfor youngsterstohuntpossums,rabbits, hares,magpies,andfishforsnapper, kahawai,trevally,Kingfish,spottyand piper.

Whatwasweighedinandcounted waswellbeyondexpectations.“We had13magpies,330fish,55rabbits, and85haresentered,”saidSarah.

“Forthepossums,wehad115 weighedin–butbecausetheprizewas

fortheheaviestpossumweestimateat least300possumswereshotaspeople onlybroughtintheirbiggestone[for weigh-intotrywintheprize]butit seemedlikeeveryoneshotatleastfive.”

Foreachcategorythecompetition wassplitintotwosections–forthose aged6andunder,andchildrenaged 7-13.

Atprizegiving,heldtheafternoon ofApril13attheAdamson’sTrailor MadeNZpropertyonStateHighway 2,hundredsofpeople–youngand old–showeduptowatchyoungster claimprizesfortheheaviestpossum, hareandrabbit,thehighesttallyof magpies,andtheheaviestandaverage fishspecies.

Organiserscouldn’tbelievehow manyfamiliesturnedup.“Itwasquite hardtotellhowmanywerethere–buttherecouldhavebeenupto450,” saidSarah.

“We’reallstillthinking:‘Howdidwe fitthatmanypeopleinthatshed?’.It wasincredible.Weareveryproudof whatweachieved.”

Pesteradication

Sarahsaidtheideaofthe competitionisnotsomuchabout winningprizesbutencouraging familiestogetoutdoors,spendtime togetherandeducatetheiryoungsters aboutlandconservationandpest eradication.

“It’saboutteachingthenext generationlookafterourpartofthe world.Soforfishingit’saboututilising thefishtheycatchandonlytaking whattheyneed.Andforhunting, it’saboutteachingchildrenthatwe eradicatethesepeststolookafterour nativetreesandanimals.

“Wetookourownfour-year-old possumhuntingforthefirsttimeand explainedtoherwhywewereshooting possumsandshewassoon-board.”

Sarahthankedthecompetition’s committee,theirpartnersandthe manyfriendsandfamilywhosimply showeduptohelpout.

“We’vealreadygotbusinesses wantingtore-sponsorandnew sponsorscomingon-board,sowewill behostingthecompetitionagainnext year.”
