It’soneofthemost anticipatedeventson theTePukeareasocial calendarthatattracts attendeesfromPaengaroa, Pukehinaandfromacross Tauranga.

“Thiswillbethefirsttimewe’re goingmoreupmarketwiththe menu.Wefeedpeoplereally wellandgoalloutwiththe entertainment.”

Majorfundraiser

Thequiznightwasfirstrunin 1992andisoneoftwomajor fundraisersforthesmallrural primaryschool.Lastyear’s eventraisedarecord-breaking $50,000,whichturnedplans forshadesailsintoafull, weatherproofindoor-outdoor spaceforthejuniorblock.

“It’saplacewherekidscaneat andplayyear-round,whether it’srainyorsunny,”said Siemelink.“Thisyear,funds willgotowardmaintainingand expandingthatarea,aswellas otherschoolfacilities.”

Thepreviousyear,$40,000 wasraisedforanewschoolvan. “Sonowwehavetwobeautiful vanstotakekidstosporting eventsandoutings.”

Businessescansponsoraquiz roundoratable,donateitems asprizesorfortheauction orkitouta‘floorperson’in brandedgear–apopularoption thatwasintroducedlastyear. “It’samazinghowmuch supportwegetfromacrossthe district,”saidSiemelink.“Thisis oneofourtwobigfundraisers, anditjustkeepsgettingbigger. Thankstohistorian ChristineClement,asAnzac Dayapproaches,wecan acknowledgethesacrifice madebytwobrotherswhose namesareamongthose onthememorialgatesat TeKuraKaupapaMāorio TeMatai,nowknownas TeMatai–TeKuraaIwio TapuikainWaitangi.

Obadiah(Oparia),alsoknown asFrederick,andThompson Nichollswerethesonsof HumphreyNichollsandhiswife HareteNgakouraTamihana,of TeKahika,nearTePuke(Ngāti Tuheke,Tapuika).

ObadiahThompson

ObadiahattendedTePuke SchoolandenlistedasFrederick forserviceonAugust23, 1916,attheNarrowNeck CampbetweenDevonportand TakapunawiththeNewZealand PioneerBattalion.

Hegavehisdateofbirthas February25,1895,butthe TePukeSchoolrollshavehis birthdateasJanuary25,1900, meaninghewouldhavebeen16 onenlistment.

Obadiahgavehisoccupation aslabourerforMrMends,flax millerofTePuke.

HeleftNewZealandwith the12thReinforcementsand marchedintoSlingCamponthe SalisburyPlainsbeforeleaving forFranceinJuly1917,joining upwiththePioneerBattalionin thefieldinAugust.

OnSeptember1,thebattalion becameafullMāoriunitagain, knownastheNewZealand Pioneer(Māori)Battalion.

Pioneerswerenotfrontline fightingunits,butalabourforce trainedandorganisedtowork onengineeringduties,digging trenches,buildingroadsand railways,andtakingonany otherlogisticaltasks.

Thiswasessentialand dangerousworkthatwasoften carriedoutunderfire.

InOctober1917,theNew Zealandforceswereinvolved inthedisastrousattackon

thePasschendaeleRidgein Belgium.

October12,becameknown asNewZealand’sBlackestDay whenthecountrysuffered1190 deathsand2106injured.

Woundedinaction

OnJanuary4,1918,Obadiah wasadmittedtothe2ndNew ZealandFieldAmbulance sufferingfrombronchitisand re-joiningthebattalionon January16,1918.

OnOctober6,hewas woundedinactionwitha gunshotwoundtohisbackand side.Thiswasduringthepush fortheHindenburgLine. Hewasadmittedtothe49th CasualtyClearingStation, Grevillers,France,anddiedthere fromhiswounds.Heisburiedin theGrevillersBritishCemetery.

ThompsonNicholls

ThompsonWilliam(Tamihana Wiremu)Nichollswasbornin TePukeandattendedtheTe MataiNativeSchool,whichwas thenatTePaamu. WhenheenlistedonOctober 21,1914,hestatedhewasa memberofthefourth(Waikato) MountedRiflesRegimentand hadregisteredforcompulsory militarytrainingatTePuke. Hewasaseamanwiththe NorthernSteamShipCompany basedatTauranga.

Thompsongavehisreligious professionasMormon(Church ofJesusChristandLatter-Day Saints).Obadiahsaidhewas ChurchofEngland.

AftertrainingattheAvondale Camp,Thompsonembarked fromNewZealandonFebruary 14,1915,withthefirstNew ZealandMāoriContingent-B CompanyPlatoon5(TeArawa) boundforEgypt.

Alongwithothermembers oftheMāoriContingent, Thompsonlandedatthe DardanellePeninsulaonJune 30,1915.OnJuly1,hewas appointedLanceCorporal butonAugust21,1915,was woundedinactionwitha gunshotwoundtothethigh. Hewasevacuatedonboard theHSArcadianandadmitted tothe2ndWesternGeneral

HospitalinManchester.

AftertimeinManchesterandat theNewZealandConvalescent HospitalinHornchurch,Essex, here-joinedhisunitinFranceon April9,1916. Herelinquishedhisrankof LanceCorporalatthesame time,athisownrequest. OnNovember8,1916,he wasadmittedforanunspecified reasontoacasualtyclearing stationandthentohospitalat Wimereux,acoastaltown4.8km northofBoulogne.

Militaryrankings

Thompsonre-joinedhisunit onNovember17.However, ChristmasEve1916hewas punishedwiththestoppageof 3shillings6penceforlossof equipment.

Fromhismilitaryfileitappears helosthisbadges.Hewas re-appointedLanceCorporalon September9.OnSeptember27, hewaspromotedtoCorporal. ThompsonWilliamNicholls wasawardedtheMilitaryMedal forconspicuouscoolnessand devotiontodutyonthenightof October1and2,1917.

Hiscitationreads:“ThisNCO hadchargeofacarryingparty

workingonWieltje-Gravenstafel Rd.Theenemyshelledtheroad veryheavily,butNichollsgot throughwithhisloadandthen withdrewhismeninperfectorder andgotthemundercoverinshell holes.Onemanwaswounded, andNichollsescortedhimout ofdangeratgreatpersonalrisk. Hiscoolnessunderheavyshellfire andtheexcellentcontrolhe exercisedoverhispartysaved manycasualties.Hesetasplendid exampletohismen.”

Medicalissues

However,hewasnotawell man,and,onJanuary4,1918, Thompsonwasadmittedto the2ndNewZealandField Ambulancesufferingfrom bronchitis.HisbrotherObadiah wasalsothere. Thompsonwasdischargedeight dayslaterbutthenonFebruary 24wasre-admittedtohospitalin Boulognesufferingfrompleurisy. Hewasplacedontheseriously illlistonMarch12,1918, andadmittedtothe2ndNew ZealandGeneralHospitalat Walton-on-ThamesinSurrey. OnMay25,1918,hewas placedontheNewZealandRoll tobereturnedtoNewZealand.

Thehospitalreportsaidhewas sufferingfromacutetuberculosis ofthelung.Hewasshipped homeontheHospitalShip MahenoonSeptember28. ThompsonWilliamNicholls diedintheAucklandHospitalon November6,1918,duringthe worldwideinfluenzaepidemic, thoughhiscauseofdeathisnot noted.Hisbodywasshipped toTaurangaforburialintheTe Kahikaurupā,TePuke. Thompsonhasa CommonwealthWarGraves Commissionheadstone.Hehad servedfouryears17dayswith 133inNewZealandserviceand 1345daysoverseas,thelongest serviceoftheTePukemenon theTePukeWorldWarIwar memorial.

Afundraisingmovienightat

FairhavenSchoolhasnettedmore than$7000forTePukemum SarenaCranetohelpheronher cancerjourney.

CranewastoldinJanuaryshehada recurrenceofthecancerfirstdiagnosed in2023asstagefourbowelcancer.

Despitechemotherapy,ahysterectomy andremovalofsignificantsectionsof bowel,thecancerhadspreadtoher bonesandatherewasatumourinher pelvicarea.

Butshehasn’tgivenup,and,before January’snews,hadalreadyfound aclinicinMexicowhereshecould receivetreatmentfocusedonbio-based medicinethatusesmachinesand experimentaltechniques,someofwhich areunavailableinNewZealand.

Thefamilyhasatargetof$150,000to meettheassociatedcostsandSarenahas alreadymadeonetriptoMexico.

Cancerjourney

“Theyallsaid:‘Mumyoureyeslook widerandbrighter,youlookcalmand happy’andIsaid:‘That’sexactlyhow Ifeel’.”Herinitialvisithadatbe broughtforwardduetotherapidgrowth ofthecancer.

“Unfortunately,timeisn’tonmyside.”

Shesaidthethreeweeksattheclinic was“amazing”.

“Itwassuchaprofoundexperienceon allsortsofdifferentlevels–theguidance theygiveyou,theirwholethingisvery spiritualandthebiggestthingyoucan haveisyourmindandbeingintheright frameofmind,choosingfaithoverfear andtrustingtheprocess.”

Cranesaidthetherapiesaredesigned tosupporttheimmunesystemto supportitselfsoitisabletodestroythe cancercells.

“Theydoextensivetesting…ofall yourlevelsandtweakyoursupplements andyourprogrammearoundwhatstate yourbodyisatthetimeyougo.”

Nowsheisonanintensiveprogramme ofavarietyoftreatmentsandtherapies.

Consistency

Cranesaidconsistencyisthekey,andit isn’taquickfix.

“I’monaverystrictdietandavery strictregimeofeverythingIhavetodo, withmultiple,probablyupto45-50 vitaminsandsupplements,thatIhave totakealongsidethedifferentstuffthey havegivenmetobringhomeanddo.

“It’sintenseandtakesmeatleastfive hoursadaytogeteverythingdone.”

Itis,however,farlessinvasivethe chemotherapy,shesaid.

Cranefoundtheclinicwhenshewas firstdiagnosed.

“I’vefollowedpeople’sstoriesforat leastayeartoseehowtheytrackedand outofaboutsixpeopleIfollowedwith theirjourneys,onlyoneofthemfelloff thewagonbecauseitallgottoomuch.

Threeofthemarenowcancerfreeand theotherarestable.

“Butitisalongcommitmentandalotof money.”Shesaidshe’soptimistic.

“Ihavefourbeautifulchildren,andI’vegot todoeverythingIcantobehereforthem.”

Crane’snexttriptoMexicowillbeatthe endofJuneorearly-July.

Shesaidthemovienightwastheideaofa coupleofothermumswhogotagreement fromtheschool,withtwoteachers,Alicia BestandSandyHollinshead,alsojumping onboard.

HollinsheadwasSarena’sdaughterEsmae’s teacherlastyearandBest’sdaughterEdenis agoodfriendofEsmae.

FairhavenSchool.Cranesaidthesupport fromthecommunitywasphenomenal.“I’m incrediblygratefultobepartofsuchan amazingcommunitythatsupportseveryone, nomatterwhattheirhardshipsare.”

WesternBayofPlenty willkeepfivecommunity boardsensuringalocalised approachthatis“bestforthe community”,aboardchair says.

TheWesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncil’sproposalto reducecommunityboardsto threehasbeenoverruledbythe LocalGovernmentCommission.

Theproposalcamefroma representationreviewandwould havealignedcommunityboards withinwardboundaries.

Ithadbeenstrongly opposedbytheboards,who saiditwoulddiminishtheir communityvoices.

Thecommissionheard anappealinMarch,and commissionersBrendanDuffy, BonitaBighamandGwenBull releasedtheirdecisionlastweek.

Itsaidtherewerecompelling reasonstokeeptheclearly defined“communitiesof interest”andexpandthereach ofcommunityboardstoensure coverageacrossthedistrict.

Thecommissionconsidered howitcoulddeliveradistrictwidecommunityboardmodel thatpreservedtheessenceof existingboards.

Newstructure

Underthenewstructure, WaihīBeachandKatikati

communityboardswillkeep theircurrentboundaries.

Ōmokoroawouldexpandto coverthefullKaimaiwardand berenamedŌmokoroa–Kaimai CommunityBoard.

TePukewouldaddPaengaroa, Pongakawa,andPukehinatoits representationandbenamed TePuke–East.

MaketuCommunityBoard wouldexpanditsboundary slightly.

Thechangesmeanttheentire districtwouldbecoveredby acommunityboardexcept forMatakanaandRangiwaea Islands.

Currently,about40%ofthe districtisnotrepresentedby aboard.

Acommunityboardisa groupofelectedmemberswho representtheinterestsoftheir areaandactasalinkbetween thecommunityandthecouncil.

TePukeCommunityBoard chairwomanKassieEllissaid theyputupa“goodfight”atthe hearingandspoketruetotheir community.

“I’mallforthatlocalised approachandwantingwhat’s bestforourcommunity.”

Paengaroa,Pongakawa,and Pukehinadeservedcommunity boardrepresentation,Ellissaid.

Shewasinterestedtosee whowouldrunforthose

communitiesintheOctober election.

“We[theboard]arelooking forwardtowhatthefuture holds.”

Mayor’sresponse

WesternBayMayorJames Denyersaidthecommission’s decisionbenefittedlocal communities.

“We’repleasedtoseethe outcomedeliversdistrict-wide communityboardcoverage –somethingcouncilandour communitystronglysupported,” hesaidinastatement.

“Withfiveboardsnowspanning thedistrict,everycommunity willhaveastrongerandmore equitableplatformtoengagewith councilandadvocateforwhat mattersmosttothem.”

Thecommissionrecommended thecouncilengageandeducate thecommunityabouttherole andpurposeoftheboards.

Thecouncilwasalsoencouraged toempowertheboardswithmore delegations.

BeforetheOctoberelections, thecouncilwouldreview communityboardfunctions anddelegationstoensurethey wereequippedtoenhancelocal decision-makingandsupport community-ledinitiatives.

Denyersaidthiswasan opportunitytostrengthenlocal leadershipandbuildamore connectedandengageddistrict.

“Communityboardswillbe well-positionedtoworkalongside existinggroups,suchasratepayer associations,toensurelocalvoices areheard.”

Thenewrepresentationmodel wouldalsoreducethenumber ofcouncillorsatthetablefrom 11plusthemayortonineplus themayor.AMāoriwardwould beestablished,representedby onecouncillor,thatcoveredthe entiredistrict,calledWakaKai Uruward.

Thesechangeswouldbeinplace fortheOctobercouncilelections. Thecouncilreaffirmedits decisiontoestablishaMāori wardinSeptember. Areferendumwillbeheldwith theelectionon whetherthe Māoriward shouldremain.
