Let food be thy medicine The power of good nutrition

At Bethlehem Health and Tea Shop, they believe this quote is just as important in the 21st Century as it was some 2500 years ago. They credit good nutrition as a major key to good health. “I think people tend to underestimate the importance nutrition has to their health,” says Bethlehem Health and Tea Shop owner Jude Randell. “Refined and processed foods have become the easy option and as a result people are becoming more and more unwell.” This is why Jude and her team of health professionals always recommend supplements they believe are as natural as possible and promote raw, natural and organic food and teas that are beneficial. ‘The right advice, naturally’ is their company motto. Each of Jude’s team has their own area of expertise, including naturopathy and herbal medicine, and collectively have more than 25 years’ experience and knowledge in the field of health and wellness. Your health is their concern. Located conveniently at 229c State Highway 2, Bethlehem, opposite the Bethlehem Shopping Centre, Bethlehem Health and Tea Shop is a privately-owned independent health shop serving the natural health needs of Tauranga and New Zealand. When Life+Style contacted shop owner Jude on March 24, she was in high spirits. “It’s our 12th anniversary today.” The Bethlehem shop has been on SH2 since 1982, says Jude, who has proudly owned the Bethlehem shop for the last 12 of those years. Walk inside Jude’s shop and you’ll find an array of essential and therapeutic oils, healing creams and lotions, herbal infusions and teas, homeopathic remedies, supplements, natural skin, hair and body care as well as lots of natural foods. “Probably once a week I have customers saying: ‘I have been looking everywhere for that product’ and we have it,” says Jude. Jude prides herself in stocking those products that may be unavailable elsewhere, whether it’s pomegranate molasses, savoury

yeast, camu camu powder, cacao butter or foot rollers. “Newcomers to our shop are often amazed at the amount and variety of products on the shelves,” says Jude, who is always happy to try and source a product you’re wanting. “If you can’t find a product you want, just ask the Bethlehem Health & Tea shop if they can order it for you. Hopefully they’ll be able to help. “Organic and natural food has always been a huge part of our shop,” says Jude. “Our belief is in organic unrefined wholefoods.” Another thing the Bethlehem Health & Tea Shop has to offer is a treatment programme using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy. “This machine improves blood circulation aiding healing” says Jude. “It’s a remedial machine which can help provide better outcomes involving wound healing, tissue degeneration, pain, swelling, spasm, inflammation, mood, strength and mobility.” PEMF delivers a very short duration, high intensity electro-magnetic pulse combined with multiple frequencies,

which penetrates completely through joints and muscles in as little as three to 20 minutes. “It may improve circulation, not by increasing heartbeat or blood pressure, but by opening and dilating the arteries and capillaries. This also reduces oedema, helps to regenerate damaged and diseased tissue and repair torn tendons and fractured bones.” The friendly and experienced staff at Bethlehem Health and Tea Shop often confer with each other to make sure the best product is given to a person for their particular condition. They pride themselves on their ongoing relationships with their customers. Jude sends an email newsletter once a month to more than 4000 of her loyal customers. This newsletter contains recipes and lots of information about various products, including foods and teas. Each month the e-newsletter features a different company as the main feature article, and this April is Comvita month. The Bethlehem Health and Tea Shop proudly stocks the complete Comvita range, with the ever popular lozenges sold singularly. Zoe Hunter

Taking all the right steps New dance craze comes to Tauranga He stepped on stage and the whole of New Zealand cringed. But a scantily clad paso doble performance showing off his ‘dad bod’ proved the winning combo. Simon Barnett’s finale paso doble, danced to ‘Eye of the Tiger’, won the NZ radio host the closing spotlight in the reality television show ‘Dancing With the Stars’. The Christchurch dad worked hard to get his hands on the glitter ball trophy, sacrificing time with his family and his manhood as weekly spray tans were scheduled and eye-liner became a new trend. Tauranga dancers can experience a softer version of the long, arduous, but extremely rewarding, training sessions that are an integral part of the TV show, as a brand new Universal Studiosendorsed dance fitness programme comes to the city. It won’t be in front of the camera and the entire country won’t be watching, but there will be celebrities – for the beginning anyway. Tauranga dancer Helen Morgan trained in the United Kingdom to be able to teach the programme FitSteps to fellow dancers here. The programme was derived from ballroom dancers who appeared on the

British version of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Helen says the plan is for FitSteps, owned by Universal Studios, to come to New Zealand in the future to train more instructors, so they don’t have to travel to the UK for the teaching certificate. “Fortunately for Tauranga I’m the first person [trained] in NZ, and Tauranga’s the first place in NZ to have FitSteps, which is really exciting because they’re at the forefront of new innovative dance fitness. “They’re rolling it out in America at the moment, next will be Australia, and then NZ, so when it gets here it’s going to be big.” Started in 2013, FitSteps is a dance fitness programme based on 12 popular Latin and ballroom dances in mixed ability classes. It’s a collaboration by ballroom dancers Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite, and Olympic swimmer Mark Foster. They have mixed the graceful steps of ballroom and the up-tempo steps of Latin dances together to create a fun, energetic way to stay fit and keep trim that appeals to all ages. Helen says FitSteps is a brilliant fitness programme combining interval training with fun Latin and ballroom dance moves. “In a 40-45 minute session you can burn up to 700 calories.” She’s so far introduced the new fitness

craze to Bay of Plenty Performing arts, Matua Community Hall and Katikati. “The benefits of fitness through dance show for themselves,” says Helen. “It’s kept me in great shape and I’m in my 40s. “It works nearly the whole body, and the varied dances concentrate on different parts of the body more than others. “The biggest benefit of all for me is the endorphins it releases. “I’m passionate about teaching dance and love it when I see others enjoying it as much as I do.” For further information, email helen@createdtodance.co.uk or visit fitsteps.co.uk Zoe Hunter

A cool new look Hair care using power of ice Jenna Preest brushes her hair with her fingers and the blonde strands glide through. There’s no tugging at knotted ends, or hair pulling out. Her hair is silky and shiny, and it looks healthy and strong. “I didn’t do anything with my hair this morning,” announces Jenna. “I didn’t need to dry it, straighten it or anything. I don’t even need to use my detangling brush anymore, I just use my Inverse.” The Inverse looks like a straightening iron, but it’s the cooling effects of the hair conditioning system that locks in the moisture, keeping hair irresistibly healthy while making it soft and smooth with great shine and definition. They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but the Inverse Hair Conditioning System could be the next big thing. Made in Tauranga, the innovative hair tool works on the power of ice, cooled to sub-zero temperatures. It was an idea born from a wow moment at founding director and experienced hairstylist Dave Roe’s house. His wife Carolina’s head of untamed gorgeous brown curls had been well…tamed. “Wow, what have you done to your hair,” said Dave. “I just rinsed it in ice water,” said Carolina. Dave’s brain started ticking and the experiments with cold water on hair began. With the backing of Enterprise Angels, an investor group that connects start-up businesses requiring funding with investors, it wasn’t long before award

winning product development company Locus Research got behind the idea and Roholm Ltd was born. Following years of heat styling and damage, painfully long replenishing treatments and many expensive attempts to restore the condition of hair, women are still searching for the answer to strong, healthy and shiny hair. After extensive scientific research, the team found that treating the hair at a sub-zero temperature was the way to go. “When you subject your hair to a sub-zero temperature you lock in the moisture in your hair,” says Timothy Allan from Locus Research. Inverse is a tool that can be used on wet, damp, or dry hair. For best results, loosely towel dry your hair after showering before you begin. Just like what you’ve been doing for years with your straightener, simply work the frozen device through thick sections of your hair, starting at the roots and gliding down towards the tips. The heart of the Inverse are the Ice Cores, which are filled with a specifically formulated solution which hold the optimum sub-zero temperature when frozen. “To reach sub-zero temperature, you put your Ice Cores in your freezer,” says Timothy. “They have a special formulation that uses the phase change from water to ice. This formulation is designed to sit at about negative six degrees. “Once it’s in an ambient environment, about 24 degrees, it will sit there for about 25 minutes before it starts to climb.” Timothy says high temperatures remove the mois-

ture in your hair, stripping the goodness needed to keep it strong and healthy. “Inverse conditions your hair by locking moisture deep inside each strand, keeping it in a beautiful, healthy state for longer. Dave says the Inverse is his first point of call for women wanting to restore their damaged, lifeless hair and achieve silky smooth results. He says with Inverse, the hair becomes much easier to brush, style and manage. “Within a few uses, you can start to see the benefits of Inverse Conditioning. With frequent use, you can feel your hair becoming stronger, healthier and more hydrated. It also becomes easier to maintain!” Timothy says the Inverse directly strengthens each strand of hair with elevated hydration and deep restoration within the fibres. “What we’re trying to do is absorb the heat from your hair and lower the temperature to deliver the therapeutic effect.” “Generally what you’re seeing is an improvement in the actual hair fibre. “I think what most women want is hair that looks great. With something like this it helps to achieve that but its doing it in a way that’s great for your hair.” The Inverse is scientifically proven to work best from a damp stage, this is where the Inverses Ice Mist comes in. The Ice Mist works alongside the Inverse to naturally prepare the hair for the hair conditioning system. “This solution is a very low mineral, very low PH solution using deionised water and is

designed to close the cuticle of the hair which generally makes your hair looks nicer,” says Timothy. “It improves your hair without adding anything to it.” This was new for Dave, who has gone from salons with shelves of hair product, to a simple spritz of an Ice Mist. “It just eliminates the need to have a whole bathroom full of product,” says Dave. “Most of the hair types I see are simply lacking in moisture. “When the hair is hydrated you no longer need to cosmetically make it feel like that.” And the more you use Inverse, the better the results. Dave says prolonged use of the Inverse will hydrate, revitalise and heal your hair, giving better definition and less fly-away. The men admit it’s a bit of a paradigm change from straighteners, but they believe in their product and know women will too. “Anecdotal effects also include colour retention,” says Timothy. They’ll look into that next, as they continue to research their product. Number-one fan and owner of I Love Merino Mount Maunganui, Margarita Hammond-Smith, stocks the Inverse in store. “It’s fabulous,” she says. “I had long hair, and because I’d straightened and bleached it for so long, the condition wasn’t so good, so I cut it off – that was before I knew about this product. “This puts the moisture back in, repairing the damage from years of straighteners and treatments. Now I notice I hardly use my irons at all, and go Zoe Hunter for a more natural look.”
