Dave Holder Passion, rallying and faith I caught up with Dave Holder just as he was about to drive onto the Cook Strait ferry. He’d flown in from France, gone straight to Dunedin to race in the Isuzu Otago Rally and was now heading home to Mount Maunganui. “Coming home to sleep in my own bed for a few days for a change,” says Dave. “And see my wife!” In Otago he’d co-driven for Scott O’Donnell. The Dunedin Isuzu Otago Rally is the first round of the 2018 New Zealand Rally Championship. Last year Dave won the event, driving a Hyundai NZ-supported Hyundai i20 AP4. Becoming the New Zealand National Rally Champion in 2016, after only five short years, on a very limited budget, is an exceptional performance. He and co-driver Jason Farmer want nothing less now than to be world champions. Dave stretched across a narrow road in Corsica.

A stepping stone to that is the Junior World Rally Championship which the duo were accepted for in December. “There are 15 young drivers in the JWRC,” says Dave. “We all compete in the same class using the same car run by the same team. “This ensures parity between everything so essentially the best driver or best package comes out on top. “Because of the expense, the championship is just five rounds of the WRC, rather than all 14. These are Sweden and Corsica which we’ve completed, and next we’ll head to rallies in Portugal, Finland and Turkey. “I’ve never done any snow driving which is what Sweden was, nor any tarmac driving which is what Corsica was, so it was very challenging.” The remaining three events are all on gravel, which Dave has experienced rallying in New Zealand. “We got stuck in snow banks a couple of times in Sweden. In Corsica, we were really happy with the pace but just ended up making a couple of mistakes which cost us a result. “I’m there to gain experience. “We got the two bogey rallies out of the way. Now we are aiming to be in the top five in Portugal and on the podium for the remaining two events.” The teams all drive Ford Fiestas, keeping the same car all year for each of the five rallies. Dave’s team is based in Poland, so the car is returned there, prepared and then taken to the next rally. “We fly in, be ready to drive, and pay the bill,” says Dave. It’s costing NZ$400,000 to complete the five 2018 overseas rallies.

“It takes a lot of passion to get to this point and it’s taken a lot of people in the background who help me”

The Corsica rally, known as ‘the rally of 10,000 corners’ was three full days of rallying. “We left here Easter Thursday, arrived Saturday morning, had Sunday off to recover from jet lag, and then Monday we went and did a recce for three days,” says Dave. “That means driving the actual rally stages in a road car to write our pace notes. “We start the rally on the Thursday going through to Sunday. Then wake up Monday morning, get on a plane and fly back to New Zealand.” Back home, Dave is a mechanical engineer and his wife Adina works as a physiotherapist. “I started rallying six years ago. Growing up on a farm, driving was natural in terms of tractors,” says Dave. “Adina and I have funded it for a number of years with support from sponsors, but largely our own money to this point. With both of us working full-time, we’ve put one of our wages into rallying since marrying five years ago. Now we’re at the point where the financial aspect of it is much larger than what we personally can put in, so we are looking for sponsors and support, and have shareholders who are involved with us.” Dave is supported by a number of local Tauranga businesses, including Mount Wheel Alignment, Cooney Lees Morgan and KPMG to name a few. HWR Group, a Southland owned and operated company, recently brought Dave on board to be an ambassador for a new campaign they’re running. “As my profile grows there are skills that I can offer business,” says Dave. He’s also the Celiac New Zealand ambassador. Having the challenges of being gluten-free and

six-foot-six in height, Adina steps in, preparing food ahead of time for the rallies, making sure he’s taken care of. “It takes a lot of passion to get to this point,” says Dave, “and it’s taken a lot of people in the background who help me.” A member of a local church, his Christian faith plays an important part in his journey. “Rallying is for more than just passion,” says Dave. “I enjoy it, it’s an adrenalin sport. But one aspect I’ve always felt is that this is where God wants me, and doors have opened or closed at the right time, and it makes me see this is where God wants me to be.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Lunchbreak Battles are back! Lysaght Llamas call out CMW Rock Stars

Photos: Bruce Barnard

Mike Stott is ready to rumble. His Lysaght Llamas team won the 2017 Cooney Lees Morgan Lunchbreak Battle and this year they’re back to defend their ‘world’ title. “I want to call out Chris Lowe from CMW Geosciences,” says Mike, eyeballing CMW’s team leader Rob Taylor at a confrontation in downtown Tauranga. “You didn’t compete last year, but we don’t think you’ve got what it takes to overcome our Llamas. “We’ve been in training camp behind closed doors for months, priming our minds and bodies to compete in the most prestigious casual lunchtime business competition in the Bay.” Hosted by Sport Bay of Plenty, the Cooney Lees Morgan Lunchbreak Battle is an annual fun free event designed to encourage Tauranga businesses to get out from behind the desk and get active for up to 45 minutes during their work day. This year there is a new format, more zany games and even more prizes on offer. Sport Bay of Plenty recreation advisor Michelle Barns says you don’t have to be ‘sporty’ to enter as the focus of the activities is on having fun and meeting new people. “But,” she cautioned, “you will get sweaty – the aim of the event is to keep teams moving in some way for the whole 45 minutes.” Local businesses are encouraged to enter teams of three into the event, which runs over three

consecutive Thursday lunchtimes, and go head-tohead with other organisations in a series of physically and mentally challenging games and activities. “Studies show that physical activity during the day, in whatever form, is proven to boost your mood, increase productivity and enhance your focus,” says Michelle. “With most of us spending up to eight hours a day seated – including during our lunchbreaks and when we get home – this event is a quick, easy way to break up the day, chat to your co-workers and even meet new people from other local businesses. “Your bosses will thank us for it!” Michelle says the 2017 event was extremely popular, with 40 teams from Tauranga and Mount Maunganui competing for the top spots. However, this year a few changes will mean an enhanced experience for all. “Following feedback from our participants, we have made a greater focus on head-to-head competition,” says Michelle, “and due to the changeable nature of autumn-winter weather, we have moved all events indoors to Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre on 11th Avenue. “We’ve also got some new games, as well as a return of Clash of the Corporates for those who have unfinished business.” “We know we’re ready, and more importantly you know we are ready to take you down,” growls Mike fiercely at Rob. “Just like we did recently in our interoffice competition. Come on CMW, come at us – we know you want redemption.”

“There is a very healthy competitiveness between the two companies. Hence why we have called them out for this”

The two businesses have a twice-yearly inter-office competition called the Heptathlon of Mediocrity where they compete in an evening of ridiculously silly challenges and events for the glory of the Golden Survey Peg Trophy. “We have won every time so far,” says Mike. “So there is a very healthy competitiveness between the two companies. “Hence why we have called them out for this.” Rob Taylor fronted up to Mike’s stare in Chris’ absence. “Last year may have been a lucky year for the Lysaght Llamas, but that was then and this is now!” declared Rob. “With a clean slate of new challenges and more importantly new rivalry, CMW are here to herd these Llamas out of town.” The Cooney Lees Morgan Lunchbreak Battle will be held at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, 11th Avenue on Thursday, May 24, 31 and June 7, starting at 12.10pm. There are three unique challenges: The Week That Was, Clash of the Corporates 2.0, and Curve Balls. There are prizes for podium finishes in each event, as well as the overall top spots, thanks to The Barrel Room, Barrio Brothers Tauranga, Rye Bar and Grill, Virtual Reality Experience, Tauranga Musical Theatre and Escape Masters Tauranga. “It will be fun to challenge them in a different situation which is completely non-biased, and what better arena than the CLM Lunchtime Battle,” says Mike. “We have allowed you to have your time in the

Kirstin Brown, Deanna Simpkin, David Boston, Rob Taylor, Jessie Campbell, Conrad Donaldson and Mike Stott.

spotlight,” declares Rob, “but it is now time for a new champion, and that is going to be CMW Rock Stars!” Registrations for this event are capped at 40 teams on a first-in, first-served basis, with registrations closing 5pm, Friday, May 18. For more information and to register visit www.sportbop.co.nz/clm-lunchbreakbattle Post note: Motivational work quotes to inspire workers through a week are not dissimilar to

motivational sports quotes. A few include: ‘sometimes you win, sometimes you learn’, ‘everything you want is on the other side of fear’, ‘the harder you work, the luckier you get’, and ‘without sacrifice, there can be no victory’. Pro wrestling challenges include ‘I am the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be’ and ‘Feel the BANG!’ It will be interesting to see what challenges the teams lay down when they go head to head in the rounds of lunchbreak battles. Creamy mussel and leek chowder Ingredients 3kg-5kg bag fresh mussels 1 large white onion, sliced 70g-100g of butter 3 large agria potatoes, peeled and diced 6 leeks, cleaned and chopped to the green part 2 Tbsp fennel seed, crushed 1 large fennel bulb, sliced 2-3 cloves garlic, crushed Sea salt flakes to taste 1-2 Tbsp cracked pepper 1 can evaporated skim milk Chopped parsley Method In a large pot slowly sauté leek and fennel bulb and onion in butter for about 15 minutes until sweated down. Add garlic, ground fennel seeds, black pepper and salt and diced potatoes. Cover leek and potatoes with water and bring to the boil, then simmer for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, clean and remove beards from mussels and give them a good scrub. Once the leek and potato mix is ready blend well in a mixer or food processor. Transfer back into a clean pot. Add mussels and almost the whole can of evaporated skim milk. Stir well until they begin to open. This is the tricky bit: remove the mussels once they’ve opened and place in a separate bowl to cool slightly. Long-handled tongs or a slotted spoon are recommended for this task. Scrape out the mussel meat using half of a mussel shell. Chop roughly into chunks. Rinse the shells and the bowl with a little water and evaporated skim milk. Return this and chopped mussels to the pot. Discard any mussels that haven’t opened after five minutes of simmering. Add seasoning and chopped parsley, and serve.

Age no barrier Western BOP Rest Home Games

The annual Rest Home Games are back again this year with competitive teams from around the Western Bay of Plenty fired up, ready to participate and show that age is no barrier.

“The Rest Home Games is our event for the local rest homes to come along, play some games, meet other people and have a cup of tea at the end of it,” says Sports BOP recreation advisor Michelle Barns. Held at the ASB Arena on May 16, teams from 15-16 rest homes will dress up in this year’s Commonwealth Games theme. Great outfits are expected again, as last year’s teams got fully into the spirit of the games with costumes and attitudes to match. “The cool aspect is we have run this event for years,” says Michelle. “However in 2018 we are giving it back to the community with Klara Luxford, a dedicated rest home employee taking over the reins. This is her first year doing most of it and we are supporting her.” “Our rest home has taken part in these games for the last four years,” says Klara, who is the recreation coordinator at Radius Matua and president of the local diversional therapist support group. “It’s a chance to meet up with all the other rest homes. Each rest home sends a group of eight to 10 residents.

“They usually dress up and the games are run in a round-robin tournament style.” Klara works as the lead activities person at Radius Matua. As a registered diversional therapist, she organises and coordinates meaningful activity programmes which give residents a choice of leisure activities. These usually focus on helping maintain visual, motor and sensory skills, and encourage communication and socialisation. The activities also boost memory, orientation and emotional well-being. The modified games include balloon volleyball, bowls, cup stacking, boccia, ring toss, balloon badminton, ten pin bowling, and noodle hockey. Most of the games are undertaken sitting down. “These are the sports activities we do in our rest homes regularly,” says Klara, “but this event offers a chance to compete a little bit. “Everybody is quite competitive – even the 90-year-olds!” “This year when Sport BOP asked if our local diversional therapist support group could take over the organisation of it, it was a matter of getting in touch with all the other rest homes, and then following the programme set up by Sport BOP over the last few years. “Our rest home is quite big with over 150 residents, but if anybody from other rest homes need help, I’m quite willing to help them too.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Our changing cityscape Falling in love with buildings An iconic building dropped off Mount Maunganui’s cityscape recently. Built in 1977, The Hop House started off life as The Cream Can, a built-for-purpose ice cream parlour. It was a well-known New Zealand franchise, and similar buildings featuring the unique design popped up in cities and towns around the North Island. The Maunganui Road building was the last one still standing. Until now. I remember when it was built. The excitement of an ice cream parlour! I also remember jumping on one of the Hutt Valley trains with other tertiary students on Friday afternoons after our study was over for the week to go treat ourselves to pancakes and ice cream at a local parlour. These days it would probably be a fruit smoothie. The Cream Can at the Mount was popular with locals and holidaymakers alike, trading as an ice cream parlour for a while before becoming a steak house, and then a takeaway bar. “It stayed as a takeaway bar for quite some time,” says Dave Stanway, who showed me a photo of that era. “And then morphed into a pub-type environment which I believe may have been called ‘Our Place’ which was a pokies/kareoke bar. “It was that for at least 10 years, having a long run in that place. And then Major Toms was set up by three iconic surfies at the Mount. I think that was around 2000.”

An eclectic bar with a fun and young vibe, Major Toms became a notable music venue for alternative bands. As well as hosting some of New Zealand’s most up-and-coming musicians, all sorts of other entertainment was also offered, like dress-up nights, trivial pursuit evenings and album release parties. People enjoyed these good times. “We bought it in 2014,” says Dave. “Turned it into The Hop House and by the time we closed we had a pretty big reputation New Zealand wide for being an excellent purveyor of quality, real batch-brewed beers.” The Hop House also became one of Tauranga’s most popular quiz night venues and again attracted musicians and fans. In 2016, Mount Maunganui’s BSW Warbrick, aka Space, painted a mural on the low wall curving down from the building, in the outside garden fronting the road. Phoebe Robinson, aka Jeremiah, painted a long mural against the wall of The Social Club, showing faces looking across at the Hammerhead Shark mural on the opposite side. Nearby, the Mount Social Club and Satori Lounge are popular destinations. Lucas Fleury ran the Armazen restaurant and bar from 2009, changing the name to Mount Social Club in 2014. He’s given it a full make-over using mostly recycled and reclaimed building materials, fitting it out with funky, up-cycled furniture. It’s not only a restaurant and tapas bar, but also an events venue with live music every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon, from acoustic musicians to full bands and

“As the tattoo parlour building and The Hop House came down, it felt like all the mural faces were looking over the scene with a ‘what about us?’ expression”

DJs. Arguably one of the best places to go listen to Tauranga’s top jazz exponents. As the tattoo parlour building and The Hop House came down, it felt like all the mural faces were looking over the scene with a ‘what about us?’ expression. Their eyes seemed to follow the demolition crew as they went back and forth with their equipment. An uncanny experience as the tower finally toppled over. In June 2017, Dave Stanway decided The Hop House would celebrate the demolition with a party and to let everyone know they were headed over to the Tauranga CBD to establish the business again, with a new name – The Barrel Room in Wharf Street. The Hop House had one final soirée, which they called the ‘Hop House Funeral - Down With Corporations’. The free gig featured five bands who had rocked the 2mx2m stage and filled the venue to its rafters with mean local music over the years – Super Narco Man, Dead Recipe, Joe’s Van, Spoonfed and Mini Simmons. At the time, local musician Dylan Israel felt the demise of The Hop House would be a huge blow for the music community, with local musos having fewer options for places to hold gigs in. “The Hop House and its previous incarnations have been a staple of the gig diet for musos for a few years, for sure,” said Dylan prior to the last concert. “What made it so well-loved was the fact the venue encouraged original music – that’s what made it so popular with the local musos.

“So we wanted to get all of our friends’ bands who’ve played regularly at The Hop House for one big, massive and final hurrah.” The new building at 297 Maunganui Road will include four retail tenancies and two penthouse apartments. I feel nostalgia and a sense of loss and hope the new building rising in its place won’t be a box. Please give us a building we can again fall in Rosalie Liddle Crawford love with.
