House of the Year Pride, passion and perfection Twelve judges, in teams of two, have started their journey up and down the country seeking New Zealand’s top residential builds in the Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition.

More than 340 homes are being assessed, with regional award-winners announced at nine regional events during July and August. Two of the judges – architect Eric Dally and John Glover, a master builder – have visited Tauranga. The four categories they are judging are renovation up to half-a-million, renovation over a million, volume builders up to $450,000 and volume builders from $450-$700,000. John’s company, based in Albany, won the 2015 House of the Year Supreme Award for renovations over one million. “We’ve been building for a number of years there,” says John. “Eric was the judge when we won, so I’m giving a little bit back by helping with the judging.” “We always have an architect and a builder judging together,” says John. “So the same set of eyes are looking at the same houses throughout the country.” An industry expert, Eric has been judging for 18 years, has judged every category, and clearly enjoys it. They’ve been travelling two or three days a week to complete all categories. “It’s a way to give something back to the industry that has been good to me,” says Eric. The Tauranga house we meet in is in the ‘renovation under half-a-million’ category, has retained its original

footprint and had a complete internal makeover. Some of the trends Eric and John are seeing across the country include the use of black and white and wallpaper. “We’re not seeing any real difference between North and South Island homes,” says John, “just different ways of doing things. They call them dwangs down south, we call them nogs here. Cribs and baches.” “The biggest issue I’ve seen is the lack of land,” says Eric. “And when it comes on the market, it’s very expensive. “I think that is, to a degree, driven by the Resource Management Act. And building consents are expensive.” The judges have found a wide mix of property types. “Some have great views and some have what I call internal views,” says Eric, “where you look out on the landscaping and courtyards. “With judging of course, landscaping and the views don’t come into it. “And the land value doesn’t come into it either. It’s all about the craftsmanship, and it’s all about the build. It’s only the house. I look for three things - pride, passion and perfection.” “It’s going the extra mile, that’s what we’re looking for,” agrees John. “This competition sets a standard for the industry and showcases the range of materials and approaches the industry can use to meet the increasing demands of the sector,” says Registered Master Builders CEO David Kelly. “We are excited to see the range of homes this year and the innovation that is currently taking place in the industry.” For more information about the competition, visit: www.houseoftheyear.co.nz Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Damian Torwick Riding life’s rapids Damian Torwick developed his passion for the sport of canoe slalom by initially following his older brother Cody’s footprints.

Damian with parents Paul and Melanie Torwick

“Cody started kayaking before me,” says Damian. “He’s not the most athletic lad and he started it because you could sit down doing it. I didn’t really want to try it; maybe do rowing instead. But you have to get up early for rowing so I thought I’d give kayaking a go. “After just one time in the kayak I thought: ‘I love this!’ and so I just continued with it. “That was about four and a half years ago and I’ve never looked back. It’s the only sport I do now.” Damian is currently in his last year at Tauranga Boys’ College. “The college encourage us all to do a sport. “My brother joined kayaking but stopped during his last year of school to focus on uni.” Damian’s had a good year so far, competing in late March in the three-day New Zealand Secondary Schools Canoe Slalom Championships at the Hawea Whitewater Park where he won top overall paddler. He then travelled on to Tekapo for the national selection races over Easter weekend. “At the nationals I made it through to the finals, which is the top 10 paddlers, but then I missed a gate which means you have a 50-second penalty so I ended up coming second in the under 18s. “It’s been a good year so far and I’m happy where

I’m at with the paddling. “At the secondary schools competition, there’s different events. In the K1 you sit on your butt and paddle with two blades. In the C1 you kneel in the boat with one blade. I’m more of a K1 paddler.” Goals ahead for Damian include the yearly world cup and world champ events, and the Olympics. “They just took C2 out of the Olympics which is the one with two people in a boat. The whole kayak community’s in a bit of an uproar about that. “I feel like the world cups and the world champs provide more competition than the Olympics,” says Damian. “In the Olympics you’re only allowed one boat from each country for each event but in the world cup, it’s annual, and you’re allowed three, so there’s more depth and competition for the paddlers.” “This is my last year in the under 18s or juniors. “Next year I move up into the under 23 category. “After 23 you move to the senior category and compete at world cups and champs and Olympics.” This year Damian has been selected to compete with the New Zealand team in Italy, and faces the financial challenge not only around his chosen sport and an expensive year competing; but also his dayto-day family living situation. “Our family is not in the best financial situation at the moment,” says Damian. “We’re going to be looking at living in a caravan soon. We’ll get two caravans so my parents will have one. And my brother and I will be in the other.” His mum Melanie works teaching special needs

children at Tauranga’s Special School and his dad Paul is an automotive engineer. “We’ve been renting a home in Tauriko for about 12 years, but there’s going to be a development where we are living, so we have to move out of the house,” explains Damian. “We got denied our mortgage by the bank. So we thought: ‘alright, we can’t go and buy our own home so we can either go rent and not save up any more money for a mortgage because of the insane rent prices. Or if we live in a caravan, hopefully in a few years we’ll be able to afford our own home’. “For this year’s trip to Europe I was umming and ahhing about going because of our financial situation,” says Damian. “I’m scouting for sponsorship to make the trip possible.” Damian has been fortunate in that he is one of nearly 30 Bay of Plenty sports people, from a variety of different sporting codes, who are the recipients of the first round of BayTrust Athlete, Coach and Official scholarships for 2018. Along with five or six other canoe slalom athletes, he has gym sessions at the Sport BOP gym three times a week with French coach Pierre Labarelle, one of the BayTrust Coachforce staff. “He’s such an amazing coach,” says Damian. “He came along about 18 months ago and he’s worked wonders with all the athletes. Mostly I work on my upper body. You look like an upside-down triangle.” Damian is trying to figure out what comes next after college, where he is the college’s academic captain as well as an established sportsman.

“It’s an honour,” says Damian. “But it does give me some pressure to do something that reflects that.” Feeling pulled in two directions, he has decided to centre himself in Auckland next year. “There’s a whitewater course up there at the Vector Wero Whitewater Park,” says Damian. “We get to train on a world class course. I’ll probably study up there but don’t know what subject yet. Something that will help me to do the sport I’m Rosalie Liddle Crawford really passionate about.”

Dragon breath Entering the magical world of cosplay Last week I went to a seemingly typical Tauranga house, unaware I was going to meet a dragon six metres long, three metres high and with a wing span of about six metres. I paused to read the welcome sign: “In this house, we believe in magic. We have epic adventures. “Once upon a time, and in galaxies far far away, we do wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff while going where no man has gone before. We know the answer to everything is 42 and that the odds are ever in our favour. We do cosplay and passion and we aim to misbehave and we don’t care what others think because in this house, we do geek.” And with that, of course, I already felt right at home. I knocked, the door opened, and I ventured forward into a magical world of mythical creatures and film characters. Smiling down at me was a towering Ludo, the Rozanne and Paul de Wild

night troll from Labyrinth. Legolas, son of the Elvenking Thranduil of Mirkwood, and Tauriel, a captain of the Elven guard of Thranduil’s Woodland Realm, seem to have left their clothing on stands nearby. I turned to find PT Barnum and Jenny Lind moving towards me with friendly smiles. The ‘Greatest Showman’, aka Paul de Wild, shook my hand and I found myself being welcomed by him and his wife Rozanne, dressed as Jenny. Their son Stephen popped out into the foyer to say hi, and I realised why I immediately loved this family. They have so much heart shining out of their eyes. It’s not movie-fake, it’s real and warm. Absent, but part of the family team is Kali, a 2D animator at Auckland Animation Studio Mukpuddy, who initiated the family’s foray into cosplay after attending Armageddon 2008. Cosplay, a contraction of the words ‘costume play’, is a hobby in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character. Favourite sources include anime, cartoons, comic books, live-action films, television series and video games; and cosplayers often attend fan conventions. NZ’s Armageddon Expo is a pop culture convention that holds multiple events around New Zealand in cities including Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga and Christchurch, with a combined yearly attendance average of 120,000 people. Fan costuming and making realistic props is something that appeals to both Paul, a boat builder and construction manager at Pachoud Motor Yachts, and Rozanne, the events and functions

manager at Mills Reef. They’re both highly-skilled problem solvers in their real-life occupations, and they have applied their expertise to creating props and costumes, taking out top cosplay prizes along with Stephen, who also works at Mills Reef. “In December 2012, the Avengers movie came out, and we left the cinema with Paul all excited about Hawkeye’s quiver and bow,” says Rozanne. “Kali issued the challenge for us to enter the 2013 Auckland Armageddon cosplay competition as Hawkeye and Black Widow.” Paul and Rozanne won a technical award in the Open Section, and Kali, dressed as Merida from the animated movie Brave, won a technical award in the Novice Section. “Two years on, we entered as a whole family at Wellington Armageddon as characters from the hit TV series Game of Thrones,” says Rozanne. “Paul and I as the twisted siblings Jaime and Cersei Lannister, Kali as our son Joffrey and Stephen as Lord Baelish.” They won Best in Show for Wellington, and took the NZ National Cosplay Cup at the National finals in Auckland. Next was the NZ Sevens competition in Wellington in January 2016, which they entered as a family and won both Best Group and Supreme Winner. However, it was while returning home from winning Best Group at the 2014 Wellington Armageddon with their Lord of the Rings costumes, that Rozanne initially encouraged Paul to build a dragon from Game of Thrones.

He initially refused, but, inspired by the TV series Face Off, started work in October 2015 on Drogon, the biggest and strongest of Daenerys Targaryen’s three dragons. “Paul studied concepts and videos of dragon and dinosaur large-builds,” says Rozanne, as I wave my hand in front of the dragon’s mouth. It responds with a growl and a moving tongue, due to the cleverly placed motion detectors inside. “The meticulous scale detail in the body foam is from using a soldering iron to burn it into the foam.” To proportion the scale of the head they used a 3D paper programme. Paul carved a block of polystyrene into the rough shape, sanded it, then applied plasticine sculpting clay. “The process of sculpting the head and neck details took two years,” says Rozanne. “The whole character will be carried internally by a carbon fibre back and shoulder

frame.” Interestingly, the name of the silicone product they used for the head is “Dragon Skin”, which is also used in the medical industry to make prosthetic skin sockets on artificial limbs. Throughout the three years Paul worked on Drogon, the family continued competing in NZ cosplay events. A long journey and a mammoth achievement, Drogon is now ready for the public. “We’re really excited to be bringing Drogon to Tauranga Armageddon,” says Rozanne, “and we’re very thankful to Bill Geradts for allowing us space. “We hope that everyone who comes along has a chance to get a photo with him.” Tauranga Armageddon 2018 will be held at ASB Baypark from 10am – 5pm, on Saturday May 26, and Sunday May 27. Ingrid Fleming Mount Mainstreet champion With the redevelopment of the Phoenix Carpark underway, Mount Mainstreet manager Ingrid Fleming has moved her office a few metres away across the road.

Ingrid with Mike Brandt from Saya Suka

She’s used to change and growth, and developing distinctly New Zealand events. “Back in 1995, my ex-husband and I started an event company called Event Promotions,” says Ingrid. “Based in Taupo, it grew into the largest of its kind in New Zealand, at the time.” Their first Taupo event, a beer and food festival, involved a huge marquee. Geographically strategic, they pulled in people from Wellington, Auckland and the Hawke’s Bay for the Auckland Anniversary weekend. Three nights of festival were planned – a Bavarian night, a New Zealand rock music night and an Irish night with two different bands playing each night, as well as themed food and staff dressed appropriately. “We had to go through a lot to make that happen,” says Ingrid. “Council thought it was going to be a big piss-up in a tent and we’d be on national television with riots down the street.”

After convincing the local council it would be a great event for Taupo, they secured 10 boutique breweries from around the country, as well as Lion and DB. Then the Wednesday prior to the event a cyclone was predicted for the central North Island. “A lot of people that would have come, didn’t,” says Ingrid. “Although it was a great success for those who came, we didn’t have the gate sales we hoped for, so lost money on it. Fortunately we were working on sporting events at the same time that were operated in that same year. “We decided to diversify the Beer and Food Festival into a New Year’s Eve festival.” The couple quickly realised by focusing their energy on sport, they could build events such as The Great Lake Relay, The Day Night Thriller mountain bike event and The Tough Guy and Gal Challenge to name a few. They developed six events, growing the company over 13 years. “We were both very passionate about the company,” says Ingrid. “What we loved was we were encouraging people to put on their sports shoes, get out there and train, and work towards a goal. “Their lives become healthier,

“One of the most common comments from cruise ship passengers is how clean the Mount is. The presentation of the street is really very important to me. And to everybody here.” Recently Ingrid’s Mount Mainstreet office in the Phoenix Carpark was sold to make room for the new park. Relocating to an office across the road, she’s as busy as ever though, with ongoing promotions and planning ahead. “Keeping hold of our established events but diversifying a bit into new territory.” An example is the Bargain Bonanza event, previously called The Garage Sale event, which will be transformed into a food event involving every cafe and restaurant along the street.

Her role involves administration, financial management, promotions, marketing and events, member relationships, and communication with everyone, including the Tauranga City Council. “The directors of Mount-based events liaise with me, and we talk about how we can help each other,” says Ingrid. “I send them all a welcome message from Mount Mainstreet to forward to their competitors and supporters. “Letting them know there’s good shopping and great food here, and you can walk everywhere. “We’re a world class destination. Harbour on one side and ocean on the other. “It’s pretty special.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

“My role is to bring as many people into Mount Mainstreet as possible and to make sure that all

happier, and more productive. They came and had an awesome time with their teams, enjoying the camaraderie. We loved that.” Ingrid ran a luxury boutique lodge in Taupo for three years before relocating to the Bay, taking on a one-year maternity leave contract at Baypark as a business manager. She later accepted the position of manager of special events, applying her expertise to developing the Jetsprint event, firstly completing a feasibility study to establish whether the stadium could hold water. “I loved it because it was the craziest event idea in New Zealand or the world for that matter,” says Ingrid. “I was absolutely passionate to want to make it work. “Along with Jetsprint BOP we went for gold and managed to work the budget. “It was absolutely brilliant. “And we didn’t have a cyclone warning! “It was mayhem, carnage, crashes and jet sprints flying out off the track. “People loved it.” Bay of Plenty Jetsprints won the right to host the event again the next year after 15,000 spectators turned out to watch the world’s first V8 Jetsprints held inside a stadium arena. And it won New Zealand’s Best Emerging Event title for 2014. Following this role, Ingrid helped the new speedway promoter for a season and grew the demolition derby sponsored by Sun Media. “We held an FMX show on the same night

with over 7000 people in the stadium. “A huge success for speedway.” Over two years ago, when previous Mainstreet manager Peter Melgren passed away, Ingrid stepped in as interim manager before securing the permanent position. “I was very happy to be given the role because I love Mount Mainstreet, and I love the Mount. “My role is to bring as many people into Mount Mainstreet as possible and to make sure that all the members are happy. “Listening to them is very important.” Ingrid also manages the cleaning contract for Mount Mainstreet, with two friendly cleaners job-sharing the seven-day role.

Apple and Walnut Strudel Ingredients 8-10 Granny Smith apples Ÿ cup of brown sugar ½ cup of chopped walnuts 1 tablespoon of cinnamon 1 tablespoon of butter 1 egg 1 teaspoon white sugar 2 sheets ready puff pastry Method Peel and chop the apples. Cook in a pot with the butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon and cook until the apple begins to soften, after about 10-15 minutes. Add the chopped walnuts then allow the mixture to cool completely. Use just thawed-out pastry sheets and place an even amount of apple mix along one edge, then roll the rest of pastry over the mixture to enclose. Place on baking tray and run a sharp knife across the surface of the pastry to form small cuts in the pastry. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with white sugar. Bake in a hot oven at around 260-270oc for around twenty minutes until puffed and golden. Serve with vanilla ice cream or just whipped cream. (makes enough for six serves)

Greens to Foodbank Community garden donates surplus The Mount Maunganui Community Garden is following in the footsteps of the Bayfair Community Garden, with the establishment of a new initiative to provide fresh produce for the local foodbank. “We recently started a surplus programme,” says Mount Community Garden committee member Melissa Cox. “Our gardeners can elect to donate some of their produce from their personal plot to the Tauranga Community Foodbank.” The Mount Community Garden has recently celebrated its fifth birthday, with a Sunday morning tea and presentation from the Mount Lions Club. The Mount Lions Club received the District 202 Lions award for the Environment for 2018, because of the work they undertook to establish the garden. Mount Lions club member David Peart presented the award to Mount Community Garden president Lawrie Gibbons. “One of the crowning glories for our Lions club was to receive, on your behalf at the Lions District Convention, this wonderful award,” says David, who has relinquished his own plot at the community garden after five years. The garden comprises plots made from timber salvaged from the Rena, and has been supported and sponsored by Daltons, Farmlands,

Harcourts and Palmers. Now with the garden fully established and producing, the committee felt there was an opportunity to give back to the community in an organised way, from the surplus that some had grown. “We’ve already had one pick-up, where Tauranga Community Foodbank came to us and picked up the produce when they were at the Mount,” says Melissa. “We donated five grocery size bags of produce. Everything from roman lettuce to herbs. “That was about two weeks ago, and we’re going to do that weekly. “All our gardeners need to do is fill out a simple form, place it in a box at the Mount Community Garden, and then I and some of the other community members harvest it weekly. “That means the gardeners don’t have to come down every time, and then that way we can also donate it fresh. “We’re hoping to follow in the footsteps of some of the other community gardens, to share the wealth that we have here. “Bayfair Community Garden has been doing this for nearly 20 years.” “I think everyone involved should be really proud of what we’ve managed to create,” says Anne Ball, founding committee member and a past president of the garden. “We call this our small slice of paradise. It’s been a huge amount of work, but the rewards Rosalie Liddle Crawford have been immense.”
