Easy living in summer Outdoor is all right when white
Summer is heading to the Bay, and for Kiwis that means less time inside and more time outside soaking up the sun and enjoying New Zealand’s beautiful sunshine. More time outdoors means updating your outdoor furniture, and Contemporary Classics’ stores in Mount Maunganui and Cambridge are the perfect places to soak up the latest in outdoor furniture design. This summer, light-coloured woven outdoor furniture is on trend, and Contemporary Classics has a huge range to choose from. “There are several reasons why light, woven outdoor furniture wins,” says Contemporary Classics owner Grant Furniss. “It doesn’t attract heat and it doesn’t show the dust and dirt like darker colours, particularly black. “If you have a black car and a white car, which do you wash the most? The darker you go the more the dirt will show.” Grant knows his outdoor furniture and says stark white is not the best of white. It glares, and has no forgiving tones. “The biggest sellers are white wash; a white with a slight grey tint, and off-white; which again is a more cream white. “The natural tones of what we call stonewash shows practical thinking also. This mimics weathered wicker and timber.” Another drawcard of furnishing your outdoor space with woven furniture is the effort it takes to clean – or rather, the lack of effort. “Cleaning woven polyethylene fibre needs no more than a hose and soft brush,” says Grant. “If it’s left fully in the rain then nothing is required as the rain will do its thing.” But if you have the woven polyethylene fibre under a shelter, Grant says dust continues to drift in and so a hose-down to get rid of the dirt is recommended. “And with 100 per cent aluminium powder-coated framing, rust doesn’t happen
so there is no maintenance.” And when it comes to those finishing touches, there are a few things you should know about taking care of your cushions. “The cushions that are covered with Sunbrella acrylic fabric and filled with quick dry foam means these too can just be hosed down if needed,” says Grant. Highly durable, water-resistant and fade-resistant, Sunbrella fabrics are so well-engineered that Grant says you need to see them to believe it. The fabric is easy to wash, extremely low maintenance, and mould and mildew resistant. Due to the nature of Sunbrella fibre, the fabric doesn’t accent dye, meaning highly UV-resistant pigments are mixed in before it even becomes fibre. Sunbrella fabrics are designed to be breathable, so they are waterrepellent but not completely waterproof. Purchases from Contemporary Classics come with a five-year warranty, and the experienced team are more than capable of
helping you pick the best furniture for your style and needs. “Classics’ outdoor furniture is assurance value for money at the end of the day,” says Grant. After 29 years of importing, with lifelong customers returning and friends referring, Grant and his team have stepped into Australia’s busy 82 Bundall Road address. Contemporary Classics is becoming the furniture hub for the Gold Coast, with 600 square metres dedicated to the same indoor-outdoor mix found in the New Zealand stores, but with more emphasis on outdoor living. So what are you waiting for? Your perfect outdoor furniture is waiting for you at Contemporary Classics. Visit the showroom at 67C Totara Street in Mount Maunganui, or 81A Queen Street in Cambridge, or phone: 07 575 5573. For more information visit: www.contemporaryclassics.co.nz

Tauranga’s tapestry Telling our story in stitches Members of the Tauranga Embroiderers’ Guild have been working on a historical tapestry of Tauranga.

Photos: Bruce Barnard
Part of a national project called A History in Stitch, the tapestry is one of 120 regional, onemetre wide panels outlining the history of New Zealand from early Maori to the present day. The project is regarded as the New Zealand equivalent of the original 70m Bayeux Tapestry, created around 1000 years ago and depicting the Norman conquest of England. “The Tapestry Trust of NZ asked the NZ Embroiderers’ Guilds if any of the regional guilds would stitch a tapestry pertaining to their area,” says Carol Roband, treasurer of the Tauranga Embroiderers’ Guild. Otago businessman Fred Haslan first had the idea of a New Zealand tapestry, depicting the history of this country, in 2010. He approached then-president of the Otago Embroiderer’s Guild, Jeanette Trotman, with the concept. The Tapestry Trust was formed, and a Lower Hutt mill produced the specially-woven wool for the panels. The Trust consulted historians at two departments at the University of Otago (History and Art History, and Design Studies) to define the historic themes and events depicted in the panels, and the designs were drawn by artists before being sent to the guilds. The final design for the Tauranga tapestry has the Tauranga Embroiderer’s Guild emblem in the
lower left corner. Mauao, a pohutakawa tree, the Mission Cemetery and Gate Pa also feature. “We didn’t have to supply anything, just our time”, says Carol. “From the beginning until now has taken four-to-five years. “We’ve been working on this for many months. “We’re rather pleased with ours because of The Elms and Reverend Brown being depicted rather nicely.” “It’s set up at the guild meetings every Wednesday,” says guild member Jenny Thomas. “Every member of the nearly 80 members of the guild is asked to put in a stitch or two. Regularly there’s half-a-dozen people working on it.” The guild plans to complete the tapestry by 2020. During the last week in September, the tapestry was worked on at The Elms. “This is because of the Rooms exhibition, and the connection with embroidery at The Elms, which has been going on for 170 years,” says guild member Jenny Thomas. “Celia Brown’s sampler was stitched here, so it just seemed right that we should be back there stitching.” Each panel costs about $5000 to produce and it is estimated each panel takes about 300-400 hours of stitching. The Tauranga Embroiderer’s Guild usually meets weekly on Wednesdays at the Tauranga Rowing Club in Memorial Park, from 10am2pm and from 7-9.30pm. Rosalie Liddle Crawford All are welcome to join.

Luiz Vasconcelos Dog whisperer Luiz Vasconcelos has trained more than 3000 dogs of different breeds. His extensive experience over more than 10 years includes learning advanced dog training methodologies with SWAT Police and completing courses with the best trainers in the world. He has been involved with search and rescue work, helping train dogs for the Brazilian Army paratroop brigade and Brazilian Fire Brigade; and security operations for the Red Cross at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Luiz used to breed German shepherds, Belgian malinois and Dutch shepherds and wants to introduce Belgian malinois into the New Zealand Police. “I was originally from Brazil, but my family background is from Spain, Germany, Portugal and England. So I’d say I’m the result of mixing breeds!” Training as an environmental engineer, Luiz was worked six years in the field, five years of that in Brazil and one year in New Zealand. He started training dogs by himself, beginning with a German shepherd. “It was kind of a hobby. When people broke into my house. I got really angry and started a course using my dogs to provide protection for my mother. “After finishing my engineering degree I bought a German shepherd puppy from the best breeder, with my first salary. Then I went to seminars, and did
courses with the best in the world. “I had the opportunity in 2013 to train with Kenneth Licklider, who is the host of the National Geographic reality series ‘Alpha Dogs’, a training facility that produces a large portion of the USA’s police and military dogs.” He also became interested in dog sports, training in track, obedience and protection dog training with Mario Verslype, who has been six-times world champion in dog sports. “After having all this knowledge and training my dogs, I knew I needed better dogs, so after finding the best dogs in Brazil, I started breeding them – German shepherds, Belgian malinois and Dutch shepherds. They have a high degree of trainability, and are the most used dogs in the army and police around the world. “The police started getting interested in my dogs, because mine were working differently, in a much faster, accurate and happy way. “When I train my dogs, I never force them, I always like them to enjoy it. “This will ensure a higher probability that the dog will work for you because he loves to do it. “This is what interested the police.” Luiz had the opportunity to work with the Red Cross, and use his dogs for search and rescue. The dogs were useful for finding people after earthquakes. He ran search and rescue dog seminars for the fire brigade in Joinville, Brazil in 2013, and for the paratroop brigade of the Brazilian Army and Marine Army in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2014. a member of the World Team in Search and Rescue Dog for Structures Collapsed since 2013 and was a member of the security dog team to the Red Cross at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014. He has been a volunteer visitor to nursing homes and orphanages with show dogs in Florianópolis, Brazil, and provided dogs for police, fire departments and families across Brazil. Luiz made the difficult decision to leave his home country and move to New Zealand. Leaving his dogs behind was the hardest moment he’d ever faced in his life. “I needed to make the best of the opportunity here.” He found new homes for his dogs and relocated to New Zealand, spending one year in the South Island working as an engineer before obtaining his residency visa in 2017. After a two-month visit back to see family in Brazil, he returned in May 2018 and started dog training in Tauranga. “I just love Tauranga. I like the lifestyle, and I love working with dogs.” Luiz observed a lack of knowledge in New Zealand about training dogs, and felt he could bring his expertise to create something that would help others. “Many children may be bitten by a dog by the time they are 12 years old. “The majority of these bites will be by the family dog, or by a dog that they know already. “Some dogs were about to be put down, and I was able to save some lives and those dogs are now happy with a family.
“Most of the training that I do is to build confidence in the dog. Most people treat dogs like they are humans but actually they have their own way so it’s important to allow the dog to be a dog itself. Most of the problems in the future happen because we don’t introduce a dog in the right way to the world.” Luiz teaches puppy socialisation and management, obedience training, off-leash exercising, and building communication between owners and dogs. He trains dogs in search and rescue by providing physical and mental stimulation through a series of fun ‘hide n’ seek’ activities. A true animal-lover with excellent understanding of advanced dog training methodologies, Luiz is well-versed in developing training plans for individual dogs. He offers positive behavioural reinforcement, bad behaviour modification, security dog training, and teaches dogs to run and bike with their owner, pull skateboards and even learn to surf! Bret McKenzie Bass guitarist Bret McKenzie is looking forward to the upcoming tour with Congress of Animals.

Photo by Mingle Media TV - https://www.flickr.com/photos/minglemediatv/˜°˜˛˝˛˙ˆˇ˜˘/in/set72157642252193135, CC BY-SA ˆ.˛, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=31986449
“It’s not only because we’re friends, but a big part is just wanting to tour New Zealand and do some songs,” says Bret. “And then I’m kind of exploring a different thing for me. It’s not comedy, it’s not film, it’s more music for music’s sake. “The Caravan Tour is a new project for everyone so it has a kind of fresh energy and people getting to try something different. They’re a bunch of very experienced musicians. Age Pryce has written a lot of songs, and Ben plays in Trinity Roots – they’re a big Wellington band. Justin is a legend Wellington guitar player who is an astonishing musician.” On the tour Bret, who is an Oscar and Grammywinning comedian, actor, musician and producer, will be playing a lot of bass guitar. “Bass and some drums on a few songs. “But mostly bass guitar. “A song I’m going to try on this tour is called ‘This World is Broken’. It’s a slightly darker song but very catchy. A lot of the material in many of the songs I’ve been writing have been about America and about New Zealand. I’ve lived between the two places, so I have this unusual perspective on the two worlds.” Bret lives in Wellington and appreciates the friendly city vibe. “The city is great for that, because it’s not a big city. It’s really a very big town, because of the geography. “There’s something about Wellington, where there’s not really a showiness or celebrity culture.” He has toured here previously with his old band
The Black Seeds, playing at Papamoa Tavern. In October 2018, he filmed an HBO concert special with Jemaine Clement as Flight of the Conchords at the Apollo in London. At the 84th Academy Awards in 2012 his song, Man or Muppet, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. “The night I won the Academy Award was a really awesome night. Growing up, Hollywood and the American entertainment industry seemed just so far away and strange, and then I started working there and understanding it. That was the night where it all came together and I felt like I’d kind of ticked that box. It was like, done! I’ve done Hollywood! Let’s look for something else to do. That was a really amazing night in terms of career.” There’s a sense of optimism in many of his songs. “I’ve worked with New York comics who are so dark and cynical. They’re not very much fun to hang out with. I do find their stuff funny but after a while it gets very depressing. Maybe that’s part of being a New Zealander – there’s plenty of darkness in New Zealand, but there’s also so much joy. The beauty of the world around us in New Zealand helps lift us out of darker times, whereas if you live in a big city like New York, it can really grind you down.” These days Bret is concentrating more actively on music than film. “You have to travel a lot if you want to be an actor. “And live in other places for quite a long period of time. It’s not that great with a family, and not that compatible with bringing up children. Writing is great, because I can work from home.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

The Strange Caravan Tour features five legendary Wellington musicians and songwriters who will be backing each other’s songs. Bret McKenzie, known for Flight of the Conchords, Age Pryor (Fly My Pretties, Woolshed Sessions, Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra), Justin Firefly (Fly My Pretties, Woolshed Sessions), Nigel Collins (Flight of the Conchords, Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra) and Ben Lemi (Trinity Roots, French For Rabbits) will take to the stage in Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Leigh, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Auckland and Tauranga. The tour will showcase another single release, this time from musician, actor and writer Nigel Collins, who presents his new track, Depends on You. Nigel is a multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist who has also trained as an opera singer. He’s toured globally with the Flight of the Conchords as their string section of one – AKA ‘The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’. Back in Aotearoa, his regular band the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra has helped spread the virtues of the uke both at home and away. He’s also guested on records by Ed
Sheeran, Fat Freddy’s Drop, fellow CoA member Age Pryor and The Stereo Bus’s Dave Yetton. Initially starting life as a folky acoustic instrumental, Depends on You has grown into a lyrically thematic piece about the offering and potential acceptance of support. “It was an experiment – jamming the tune and lyrics live as I recorded them, and what came out seemed to be about trying to offer someone help”, says Nigel. “Or maybe – as I began to think further – perhaps my higher self giving my lower self some advice about accepting it.” Nigel is ably backed by the Congress of Animals collective – in fact, the track has the honour of being the first recorded song from the project. “We were with Lee Prebble at the Surgery in 2016. While the band were still setting up gear, Bret asked me to remind him how one of my songs went – we had previously worked on fleshing out the track in previous home jams. “We strummed through Depends On You, and off he went to the drum kit and just started playing the groove. Ben came in and picked up the bass and Justin plugged in his guitar and the song was recorded in only a few takes – with cellos and lead guitar later added at home, and a one-man woodwind band (courtesy of Oscar Laven) added on the hoof back at the Surgery to complete the track. “It came together kind of effortlessly – pretty cosmic really.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Sister Florence Duckett Memories of Gallipoli A unique personal collection of autographs, notes, cartoons and poems penned by soldiers from the Gallipoli campaign has been launched at the Mount Maunganui RSA.
Kate McCarthy presenting ‘Memories of Gallipoli’ to club support manager Peter Moss from Mount Maunganui RSA.
Sister Florence Duckett.
Crafted into a book with the assistance of Kate McCarthy, a personal historian with Forget-Me-Not Life Stories, ‘Memories of Gallipoli’ gives a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers that served during the campaign. Dating from mid-1915 to early 1917, the collection, filling three autograph books owned by Sister Florence Duckett, are the personal, poignant and sometimes humorous signatures, notes and drawings of the soldiers she nursed. Florence served on the HMHS Galeka, a Red Cross hospital ship transporting the injured from the battlefields of Gallipoli to hospitals in Egypt or Malta. In mid-1915, Florence sailed to Alexandria, Egypt to serve in Gallipoli, where the battle had been raging since February that year. Her daughter Joyce Atkinson, 89 and now living in Auckland, felt it was important the autograph books were shared with the public. “Sister Florence Duckett was my mother; a compassionate, loving person who volunteered and nursed the wounded coming off the Gallipoli battlefields,” says Joyce. “She cared deeply about these young men and the autograph books were her way of giving them something to do and a way to express themselves.” A warm and engaging person, in her spare time
Florence visited wounded soldiers in their hospital beds and asked them to write an entry in her autograph book. She wanted to give them something to do and a chance to take their minds off their plights. The three resulting autograph books, the pages of which were photographed for ‘Memories of Gallipoli’, contain the odd proposal among the cartoons, poems and autographs from the allied soldiers. Endorsed by the Returned Services Association of New Zealand, with a foreword written by former Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae, ‘Memories of Gallipoli’ has been published in remembrance of Sister Florence Duckett, hospital ship, medical and ambulance staff and the thousands of soldiers who fought in the Gallipoli campaign. Each dated entry from the New Zealand, Australian, Canadian, UK and Indian soldiers carries the writer’s name and rank. “It’s now time to bring these autograph books to public notice and to remember them; what they gave up, and the tremendous personal sacrifice they made,” says Joyce. “They gave up their today, so we could have our tomorrow and they need to be remembered.” Joyce was unable to travel from Auckland to the launch at the Mount Maunganui RSA, where Kate presented the first book to club support manager Peter Moss. One copy of the book has been sent to every RSA club in New Zealand for people to view and copies are available for $25 plus postage from: www.forget-me-notlifestories.co.nz Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Unearthed treasures Women’s Lives Matter Hidden away in Tauranga Library’s archives are some interesting items that tell stories about early Tauranga.

Stephanie Smith with the exhibition
Some of these relate to the women who have lived in Tauranga since the Suffrage petition was signed 125 years ago. Librarian Stephanie Smith has brought out these relics of yesteryear to display in the cabinets on level two of the city library. I went to meet Stephanie, and found her dressed in period costume as an early Tauranga lady, Miss Margaret Galbraith. “Two women in Tauranga signed the petition in 1893,” says Stephanie. “One was Alice Maxwell of The Elms, and the other was Margaret Galbraith. Margaret was born in 1846, came to Tauranga in 1880 and lived in a house on Sixth Ave. “The family was well-to-do. Margaret lived quietly, didn’t work outside the home, played the organ in the Presbyterian Church and was musical. “Her brother, Robert Galbraith, died as mayor of Tauranga aged 32, and her sister was sick too. Margaret was called upon to care for her sick family. It’s extraordinary that she lived a circumscribed life and yet she signed this petition. “We don’t know a lot about her, but we know she was a Presbyterian lady, so she was likely to be negative about drinking, and would have had a strong sense of truth and justice.” Stephanie has been telling the story about Women’s Suffrage in Tauranga through inventing the character of Margaret. “It was a way of telling the story about Women’s
Suffrage by telling the story of a woman who lived in Tauranga, without boring my audience,” she explains. “I haven’t been able to find a photo of Margaret, and would love to know if any of her family have one.” The display Stephanie has set out in the library actually has nothing to do with Margaret Galbraith. The exhibition is called Women’s Lives Matter, and runs until December. It highlights the lives of individual women, such as Joy Drayton - who was principal of Tauranga Girls’ College for 22 years - and groups, such as the Tauranga Bowling Club. A small lady-shaped bell was once used by the Women’s Institute of Tauranga South to call their meetings to order. Another display tells part of the story of the women’s emergency corps of World War Two. “They were so keen and mobilised themselves into a series of committees even before war was declared,” explains Stephanie. There’s a letter sent from Madame Chiang Kaishek of China in 1947 to the Tauranga Federation of Women’s Institute, thanking them for looking after Chinese war orphans. There’s badges, pins, a flag, scrapbooks and an excellent tapestry of the Tauranga Women’s Bowling Club, plus memorabilia from the 1993 Suffrage centenary celebration. In another 25 years, perhaps a photo of Stephanie dressed as Margaret may appear in the 150th Suffrage celebration display case. Rosalie Liddle Crawford

The art of the cordwainer Nick Eggleston and his pirate issues Nick Eggleston jokes that he has ‘ish-shoes’ about his shoes. I try not to smile so gaze past him at one of his paintings. It’s an amusing shoebill with a sock monkey. I can’t help it, I’m laughing. The charming eccentric Nick has caught me again, lacing me up in his off-beat humour. He reminds me that he doesn’t like the term ‘quirky’ being applied to his work. Lacking a replacement synonym, but with a tickled interest, I decide to ‘purshoe’ the topic further, asking him about his cobbling passion. “Cordwainer,” replied Nick. “Cord-what?” I ask. “Cordwainer. I’m a cordwainer.” I discover that a cordwainer is a shoemaker – the word having been introduced into the English language after the Norman invasion of England in 1066. The finest leather was used to make the finest footwear in Europe. Cobblers, on the other hand, repair shoes, or ‘cobble together’ new shoes from old. “Is that crocodile?” I ask anxiously. He’s holding a pair of newly-made shoes and brandishing a hammer. “These are my Captain Hook shoes,” replies Nick. “Cowhide embossed to look like crocodile. All my shoes are piratey.” Suddenly, after nearly a decade of knowing Nick, it dawns on me that yes, he has a bit of pirate about him. Also some Doctor Who, Charles Dickens, steam punk and a sense that he’s slipped through from an
alternative universe. I look around, keen to find the fold in the time matrix that he came from. “I got so busy with the painting,” says Nick. “I wanted to diversify and do something different that was still creative, but something with my hands.” I point out that he already does pottery and wood carving. And he paints. “I wanted to do something different,” he explains, “so I went to Tasmania to do a five-day shoe-making course.” He’s now designing his own shoes, after learning patternmaking as well. “There’s not much you can change about the shape of a shoe, as it’s obviously got to be footshaped,” says Nick. “I will be doing shoe-making workshops so people can come and learn how to make shoes and come out with a handmade pair of shoes at the end of it.” Distracted, I ask him what a particular tool is. “It’s a heavy-duty, old-fashion jiggerjigger,” he says. I have no idea if that’s a technical or whimsical term, but I don’t really care, as I’m enjoying watching the process. He’s skilled at sizing up a person’s foot to ensure the shoe fits. “Made to measure,” he smiles. “I had all the men’s size shoe lasts, but it was proving difficult to make the women’s sizes. Then Auckland shoemaker Minnie Cooper closed down, so I bought two styles of women’s sizes shoe lasts from them.” At that moment I see the pirate emblem stamped into his shoes. I look up. Nick the pirate cordwainer looks bemusedly back, a quirky grin playing across his face. Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Christmas biscotti It’s that time of year when we start to think about the coming festivities and gifts. A simple but always appreciated gift is home baking. There are many options that will please and a really nice one that is easy and makes a lovely looking gift is Christmas biscotti. These lovely ‘hard’ biscuits are great for after dinner with a coffee or a special afternoon tea. Once you’ve got the basic recipe down pat then you can add whatever you feel will make them your own. Pack them up into pretty bags with some festive decoration and your secret santa or take a wee something to a friend’s is done… you’ve got it all covered. Make a few batches of different flavours and mix it all up for a wonderful Christmas treat. Ingredients 1 cup sugar 3 free range eggs 2 cups flour ½ tsp baking powder
½ cup dried cranberries ¼ cup dark and white chocolate callets ½ cup toasted chopped almonds
Directions Preheat oven to 140°C. Beat sugar and 2 eggs together until pale and creamy. Add plain flour, baking powder, dried cranberries, chocolate bits and chopped toasted almonds, then mix well. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until firm, adding a little more flour if necessary. Divide dough in half and shape into logs. Place on a greased baking tray and brush with 1 egg white, lightly beaten. Bake logs for 40 minutes, then remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. While warm, slice biscotti logs into 1cm-thick slices and place in a single layer on oven trays. Reduce the oven temperature to 80°C and return biscotti to the oven for 30 minutes to dry. Remove from trays, cool and store in an airtight container. For some added fun dip one end into melted chocolate or drizzle melted chocolate over. You can substitute a variety of flavours such as: diced ginger and dark chocolate / diced apricot, sour cherry, pistachio and white chocolate / white chocolate, cranberry and macadamias / cranberry, finely diced rosemary and dark chocolate / mixed peel, chopped ginger and dark chocolate - use your imagination and have fun.
