Building on the beauty business You ‘O’ it to your skin
This is one of Sanctum Beauty Therapy and Spa director and owner Lisa Shea’s favourite quotes. It’s printed on the outside wall of the Mount Maunganui spa and is a perfect introduction to this Life+Style article. The professional team at Sanctum are specialists in advanced treatments and skincare. Operating in the heart of Mount Maunganui since 1999, the beauty spa has built a reputation as a place where you can “experience the Sanctum difference”. “We like to base all of our treatments on results, but it still has to have a touch of luxury,” says Lisa. “For us it’s about making sure our clients get the best.” Now, an exciting edition has been made, with experienced skin therapist and Sanctum’s new spa manager Leanna Murray joining the team of 10. This is just what’s needed for Lisa to take Sanctum to the next level – advanced skin therapy. That’s where O Cosmedics comes in. Newly launched at Sanctum, O Cosmedics is a cosmedical range made from the purest combination of medical grade ingredients and cosmetic science, blended harmoniously with nature. The science-based range is a chiral, chemical preservative-free, organic where possible, and a professional-strength product. “O empowers you with self-confidence throughout the ages and allows you to be who you want to be, comfortable in your own skin.” Highly qualified skin therapist Leanna is the ‘O guru’ and brings years of beauty experience to Sanctum. After owning a successful skin care business in Papamoa for three years, Leanna has joined forces with Lisa, who she met five years ago when she moved to Tauranga. “It’s been wonderful to reignite our friendship and shared passion for beauty,” says Leanna. “We’re excited to be working together.” The partnership means new ideas, but not new beginnings. Sanctum will remain the place where you can relax, unwind and rejuvenate the body and soul. The launch of O Cosmedics is a step towards the future. “We pride ourselves in making sure we are one step ahead in our knowledge of skincare products,”

says Leanna. The O Cosmedics range is made using the most potent, most concentrated active ingredients in base creams that have a natural and perfect skin affinity, and is emulsifier-free. “There’s no nasties in it.” But that doesn’t mean it’s not for people who have sensitive or compromised skin. “That’s the thing with O, it’s very scientific, but it’s not complicated,” says Leanna. “There’s something for everyone.” Lisa says your personal skin needs can be analysed via an Observ consult – an advanced skin diagnostic device – and Sanctum now also offer skin DNA testing to see what your skin is more susceptible to. “These modalities take out the guesswork, you get exactly what you need – it’s a truly personalised skin plan.” With a personalised skincare and the ability to take ‘O’ to the next level by combining facials with dermal needling and microdermabrasion, Sanctum is now giving an advanced Medi Spa treatment. “We’re working with the natural function of the skin, were not breaking it down, we are re-teaching the skin to work efficiently,” says Lisa. “It’s based around a slow beauty movement. It’s not about a quick fix but working both from within and topically. With the client’s participation we will gain amazing results.” As the O quotes go: “You O it to your skin. “O Cosmetics lays the foundation for timeless beauty and gives you the chance to show your skin’s true beauty.” Zoe Hunter Sanctum is proud to give you O. Giving orphaned children a brighter future Isabel Betts has always wanted to help children in need. She has worked for a nonprofit missionary organisation called Youth for a Mission for more than 30 years. But it wasn’t until Isabel met a young woman in Uganda that she realised she was able to do what she had always dreamed of. The 53-year-old Tauranga woman works on orphan projects and helps run a school in Uganda right from her living room. “It was almost seven years ago when I felt it was finally time to pursue my passion to help orphaned children in Africa,” says Isabel. Before landing in Uganda, she came across the Orphans kNOw More charity. Just prior to her departure from Uganda, their leader told Isabel about a young, single woman who was struggling to survive caring for ten orphaned children. “He said he wanted to take her on board but there was no financial support for the ten children. “That’s how it all started. I felt a connection, I wanted to help her.” Praise Namisi was born in Uganda as the seventh child to her 22 year-old mother. Her father was killed by his brother before she was born. Since her mother was unable to care for her, she was raised by her grandmother in a slum of Kampala, in a tiny room that was also home for her 24 siblings and cousins. As Praise grew up, she started caring for children who were living on the street. By the time Praise was 18 years old she was looking after eight children. “She was trying to pay her own way through school. She would sing gospel music and sometimes get a little money from that, but
mostly survived on very little”, says Isabel. When she met Praise, she was looking after 17 children. Isabel was touched by her past and how far she had come in caring for these children. “I cried for a few hours when I left. Praise was doing exactly what my dream had been since childhood: picking up children from the streets and other public places, others being brought by the police.” And she did. Isabel wrote about Praise’s story on her blog. From that she was able to raise money for Praise which allowed her to pay rent for three months. In February 2012 she went back to Uganda and discovered Praise had moved to Kikuku Village, away from the Ugandan capital, and had built a make-shift school together with the children as there was none in the area. Praise, now 29 years-old, leads the Maisha Africa project which aims to give orphaned and vulnerable children a better future. When Praise came to New Zealand in 2013 for a training course, she asked Isabel to be her adoptive mother and also help her lead Maisha Africa from her home, which Isabel happily agreed to. Together they joined to care for the orphaned and vulnerable children and run the school. It now has more than 300 children from pre-school to intermediate and is financed by donations. Praise came to Tauranga earlier this year. She visited Bethlehem College Primary and Secondary speaking about her life and work with Maisha Africa to more than 1,500 students and 500 people at Changepoint and St Columba churches as well as the Tauranga Business Women Network and Youth With A Mission. Timeless quality Inside Neptunes’ love affair with linen As a child, at the start of spring, a little Yvonne Perry would bring bunches of flowers from the garden – and the neighbours’ no doubt – and insist on arranging them in Agee preserving jars around the house. “I recall how proud it made me feel to brighten up the house and see the family smile,” says Yvonne, who as owner of Neptunes Linen Chest & Gifts at the Mount now puts flowers into designer vases. Having bought Neptunes from Jan and Lyndon Tong, who founded the store at 188 Maunganui Rd in 1980, Yvonne says the store was already a renowned linen store. And she’s continued to develop and establish the business with a successful website and is now clearly visible on social media, while still maintaining the great face-to-face customer service. For newcomers it’s possibly the best-kept boutique secret, awaiting your discovery. New to the retail and linen trade, Yvonne lived and worked in Morrinsville and once the children moved overseas she was looking for a new challenge. “I was always keen to have my own business,” says Yvonne, who has always held an appreciation for quality linen. Yvonne happily embraces change, but holds true to fine quality and sincere customer service. There are many styles and designs in bed linen, comforters, cushions and throws, table linen, baby bed linen, devine giftware as well as plush towels, bathmats and face clothes to bring style to the home.
Inside Neptunes, a warm, fuzzy feeling takes you to a place of comfort. The iconic bed sits front and centre, lovingly dressed in a different and luxurious design each week. This week showcases Bianca Lorenne in neutral and bright red shades, with towels to match and a posy of red roses. Snuggled in front is a flowerpatterned ottoman with spiralled legs. The bed always looks cosy and inviting. Yvonne’s closeknit co-worker Sheenah Baker says the bed has been a ‘must-see’. “I can always remember being keen to visit Neptunes and check out the beautiful bed on holidays to the Mount.” At left the store bursts with every colour of cushion imaginable. At right a window display features a sumptuous duck-egg comforter with complimentary towels and gifts to complete the look. Neptunes also offer an extensive range of NZmade Alpaca and Mohair throws that compliment any decor. Some items take you back in time, such as a stand of beautiful hankies and a selection of handcrafted doilies. Yvonne and Sheenah pride themselves on friendly informative service backed with a sound knowledge of linen and textiles. “We often suggest customers bring a sample or an item for colour and possibly a photo to help get the ball rolling with the selection process. Finishing touches are our specialty.” The ladies’ fathers worked together decades ago at Morrinsville’s butter factory, and now their daughters work together. “I think it’s divine intervention,” says Yvonne. Helping out on the streets A night in the life of a Street Help van volunteer Acorn Foundation operations manager Margot McCool joined the Street Help van volunteers on one Saturday night. She shares her experience with Life+Style.
What do you look forward to doing on a Friday or Saturday night? A social drink with friends? A night in front of TV? Or even just a night off from regular duties with an easy takeaway meal? Not so for one man. Every third or fourth weekend, at about 7pm on either a Friday or Saturday night, grandfather-of-12 Max Brew packs a small bag with warm clothes and drives the 83km from his home in Morrinsville to Tauranga. He heads to the Get Smart building at the Historic Village to meet up with the other volunteers in his team – Carol, Jeanette, Duncan, Taro and Easter. Max and his team are one of seven groups which dedicate one night every third or fourth weekend to supporting the young people of Tauranga, who might need help during the course of their night out. Earlier in the day another Street Help volunteer has stopped by Raymons Pies in Judea and BakeShack on Hewletts Rd to collect pies donated by the local bakers. The team heats the pies in the kitchen at Get Smart, ready for their night out – whatever that might shape up to be – and loads up the van. The night I joined one of the teams, our
first stop was some way down Cameron Rd. A young boy, aged nine or 10, comes out from a house across the road and asks for a pie – it’s about 9.30pm but he’s hungry. He’s back about 10 minutes later asking politely if he can have a couple more pies for his cousins, who are casually hanging around the front yard watching the Street Help van. Soon after he’s back again with one of the cousins to see if Mum and Dad can have a pie as well. They are happy to stop for a chat with the Street Help crew, and all seems okay in their house, which is home to a big extended family. It’s just that money is tight for everything, food included. Then it’s in to Tauranga CBD, to be greeted by throngs of mostly 18-23 year olds heading in for a night of action. It’s a well-oiled machine – the donated pies, along with pizzas from Domino’s Bethlehem are eagerly devoured by mostly young people for whom a night out in town often didn’t have food factored in. The Street Help van is well-known to many and there is no shortage of takers for pies, pizza and sometimes a coffee or Milo. Often the van will give a lift home to young people who have got separated from their friends, or who just need to remove themselves from the situation they are in.
There’s never a fixed schedule – the team will help anyone who needs it, and their night only finishes when it looks like the evening’s revelries are coming to a close for most. That might be 2.15am, or it might be 5am if there’s a big event on in town. Only after that does the team head back to base, clean up the pastry flakes and spilt Milo from the back of the van, and finally head home to their own beds. For Max that means heading back over the Kaimai Range to Morrinsville. It’s a trip he’s made regularly for the last 25 years, since he and his wife signed on as volunteers at the very start of the Street Help van in 1991. For Max this is a calling from God – to provide a safety net for the young people of Tauranga, and he’s not about to hang up the van keys any time soon.
