New year, new you? Exercise tips to stay active – for the long haul Christmas lunch. Boxing Day leftovers. New Year’s drinks. New Year fish and chips on the beach.

Eating, socialising – and overindulging – are as much a Kiwi Christmas tradition as presents and pohutukawa trees. But then comes that overriding sense of guilt and a sudden realisation that summer means beach days, leading to the ultimate self-promise: New Year’s Resolutions. Along with giving up smoking and alcohol, weight-loss and living a healthy lifestyle are two of the most common resolutions, but are often as easily broken as made. So how do we stay true to our health and fitness goals, creating a new, improved you for the New Year?
Bodyzone head trainer Ben Gemmell recommends investing in a REPs registered professional personal trainer. Although PTs can cost you a pretty penny – with some charging about $50-plus for a half-hour session – the investment is invaluable if you need that extra motivation or direction. “Your health and wellbeing are the most important things in the world. Invest in the best that is worth your time and money.” He also suggests training with someone who is going to hold you accountable for your actions, such as a work colleague or your partner. The Gym Tauranga owner/manager Lisa Chan agrees a PT is a great way to keep you focused, as they not only offer accountability, but knowledge. “They are invested in giving you one-on-one focus and will create a specialised programme for you.” There are other options for the budget conscious too, such as small group trainings. The Gym offers RPM classes and a 10-member HPA (High Performance Arena) class, which are “a good way to get into the community of that class”. One of the biggest factors that will make or break your New Year’s Resolutions is goal setting. The key, says Lisa, is not to dream too big straight away and overcommit yourself – because when you come up short, it’s easy to fall into a negative cycle of guilt for not achieving your goals. “You need to be realistic about making small goals. While a big goal is awesome, you need small checkpoints as you go along your health and fitness journey that you can really celebrate.

“Forget about flashy gym equipment and focus on why you are there and how we can help you”
“Don’t start by saying, ‘I’m going to the gym every day and I’m not eating carbs and will drink 10L of water every day and sleep 10 hours a night’. Just one change a week is much more manageable and will help you stick though for the long term.” Sue Murphy, manager of Oceanblue Health Club in Papamoa, advises scheduling a no-fail time in your diary to work out – just like you would a dentist or doctor’s appointment. She also agrees starting small and easy is the best way to get into a new or returning routine. “Although you may be enthusiastic, you don’t want to suffer from burnout or being too sore to come back. Start with 20-30 minutes maximum in your first session after an extended break away.” Picking the right workout for you is also an important thing to consider. If you’re a gym bunny and thrive on the indoor, social environment it offers, there are a few aspects to consider. The first being location, location, location. “Pick a gym that is about 15 minutes from your home or work,” says Lisa. “That’s a big barrier that stops people from coming back.” Time ties in nicely with location – and if those group classes you love aren’t easily accessible, any excuse will do to get out of a workout. All gyms should offer new clients a free trial, to ensure you are getting a gym that works for you. “Focus on the social environment and staff interaction with you,” says Ben. “Forget about flashy gym equipment and focus on why you are there and how we can help you.” However, if the thought of being confined within four walls with a myriad of other sweaty humans is not appealing, there’s plenty of other ways to get active this summer – such as joining a social sports team.
Like choosing a gym, Sport Bay of Plenty recreation advisor for Western BOP Jen Riley suggests finding one you really enjoy so it won’t feel like a chore when it comes to exercise. “The Western BOP activity directory lists more than 200 different activity options around the Bay so it’s a good starting point when looking for a new activity to try.” There’s also much to be said about the great outdoors. The benefit of these excursions are twofold – it’s a great way to see more of the beautiful Bay and doesn’t cost a weekly membership.

“Walking is free and so easy to do, plus there are many scenic trails to explore around Tauranga. There’s more than 28 free walking groups you can join through Sport BOP’s City on its Feet programme. “Cycling is also a great way to keep active and there’s a lot of new recreational cycling groups starting up that explore the great network of off-road trails around the city.” And if there’s one thing our health and fitness professionals all agree on, it’s that exercise is far more fun when there’s a social element to it.

“Joining a group that meets regularly can help you stay on track. Meeting others can keep you motivated and it’s always a lot more fun when exercising with others,” says Jen. “Getting a workout buddy can make it fun, motivating – and sometimes a little competitive,” adds Sue. With our increasingly sedentary lives, desk bound and computer addicted, it’s important to get active and exercise regularly for a better quality of life. Make this New Year about creating a new you! Recipe to success Carving a career in a coupette Sam Wilson was very good at maths and physics. “They were my favourite things.”
Photos: Tracy Hardy.
And a proud father had high hopes of his son becoming an engineer – constructing buildings, roads and bridges. But a gap year turned into six years and rather than steel and concrete Sam’s building things with beetroot chutney, egg whites, crème de cacao, rum and “a whole bunch of Angostura bitters”. He’s a bartender, a cocktail barman, and his creations are artforms. “I enjoyed going out too much to be an engineer.” His father, a man who enjoyed a beer only occasionally, was naturally disappointed with Sam’s career path until he won a competition. “Then he was talking me up on Facebook and is very happy with me now.” But it wasn’t a cocktail that drew Sam into the hospitality industry. “It was more the lifestyle, the community of bartending, the chat and the people.” It was his cocktails and his cheeky, engaging self that won him competitions and a reputation. Like his ‘Together We Achieve’ concoction that got him to the final eight of the New Zealand Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge. “Kind of earthy” is how Sam describes it. “A deep, dark texture and a nice savoury cocktail” That’ll be $16 thank you, a standard bar price for a drink like this.

The incongruous component here is, of course, a condiment – the beetroot chutney which would be more at home on a platter or a roast lamb sandwich. And he’s transformed high tea into a cocktail with his ‘Together We Aspire’ – jam of all things in a gin-based little number which he calls floral, refreshing and very summery. “I am always looking for different ingredients I can pull together. I spotted the chutney while I was looking for jam for the other cocktail. Anything that makes it standout.” A good cocktail maker comes down to knowledge. “You should always have your head in a book looking for new things,” says Sam. And what sets a good bartender apart from a good cocktail maker? “The chat. I am good with b*** s**t. It’s how I got this far. There is a million bars out there, but at the end of the night it’s who’s behind the bar. Keeping people entertained, making sure they are having fun, defusing problems, figuring out what people like and getting them onto new things.” But don’t you get sick of hot, sticky, crowded bars, sweet perfume and equally sweet cocktails. “You just go home, wash it off and do it all again the following night.” And what about the name ‘Together We Achieve’. It’s part of the Trinidadian motto, “together we

aspire, together we achieve” – Trinidad being home to Angostura. Sam had the ideal mentor when he entered the industry, an Australian woman and bar owner who grilled him each week about what he had learned – 15 to 20 questions on everything to do with cocktails. “An awesome boss.” “I was a glassie to start with, someone who picked up used glasses. But then I was working alongside some guys who’d been Australian Bartender of the Year. Everyone threw their knowledge at me. I picked it up and ran with it.” This is a canny cocktail maker and not a one trick pony. He is studying marine engineering. “It’s contract work, which will subsidise my passion for cocktails and hopefully one day will buy me into a bar of my own, or two bars, or three.” Then there is the obligatory tattoo. It’s a Buddhist mantra, a mantra of compassion. “No, I don’t think I am spiritual.” Especially not in the wee small hours in a cocktail bar when the night is rocking and Sam’s doing the chat. “I just believe there is more to life than being here doing nine to five.” Sam finished outside the top three in the Global Cocktail Challenge, but he’s irrepressible. He’s back at the supermarket looking for ingredients for his creation. The faith and the flair lives on. And Mum and Dad are happy with whatever their Sam is doing as long as he is doing it well. Hunter Wells
These are Sam Wilson’s recipe entries for the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge. They are named from the motto of Trinidad, ‘Together we aspire, together we achieve’.
