Racing past 150 years! Whatever day you go to Tauranga Races – whether it be tomorrow’s free race day to celebrate 150 years of the club’s existence or on a normal weekday – the exhilaration of the spectacle never dwindles. Each time, there’s a thrill in the air as the horses and jockeys get set, wait for the race to start, then hurtle effortlessly round

the course while people – from visitors enjoying watching all the action through to those who are trainers, horse-owners and more – are kept on their toes until the winner crosses the finish-line. This thrill has been taking place in Tauranga for 150 years this year – since the city’s first-ever race meeting was held on the Government Paddock course on January 1, 1873.

To celebrate, Racing Tauranga is hosting a free-entry day of racing and fun activities for young and old to thank the community for their support, which it says has kept the sport alive and well in Tauranga. Find out more about this Saturday, November 4’s special celebration on page 7. Photo: John Borren.

The Day My Car Ate Me... ...and other damned nuisances

35 Monmouth Street, Tauranga

www.allurenailstudio.co.nz

‘The Day My Car Ate me’. I know it smacks of those outrageous British tabloid headlines – like ‘I’m having a martian’s baby’ or ‘Adam and Ed – gay couple were first humans’. Now that was a scoop. On a quiet news day Fleet Streets tabloid sub-editors ferret around in the weirdest recesses of their imaginations and come up with a ‘what the hell?’ headline to sell newspapers. It was an artform. ‘Man buried in 1967 still alive – hasn’t aged a day’. That’s a good billboard. Of course you want to know more. Even the bowler hats poring pretentiously through the Financial Times on the train to their London stock brokerage would be titillated. ‘Aliens abduct cheerleaders’, ‘Hillary Clinton Adopts Alien Baby’ and ‘Statue of Elvis found on Mars’ – lots of extraterrestrialflavoured headlines with a caveat that the facts couldn’t be independently verified. That’s surprising. What about ‘People Sticking Random Things Up Their Bottoms Cost Taxpapers $700,000 a year’. Like what and why? ‘Grounded Beef – fat people not allowed to fly’. It’s not okay to vilify the marginalised, however great a headline.

A staccato of clicks

Now – returning to reality and ‘The Day My Car Ate Me’… It consumed me, literally. Picture this. I climb into my car in an internal garage at home. Pitch black about 5.45am. Put the keys in the ignition, a light flashes ominously followed by a staccato of clicks – four of them. All the doors had locked on me and I couldn’t UN-lock them. Felt like Jonah – swallowed whole by a sperm whale for three days and nights. In this case a Honda CRV. Try to start the car and all bedlam breaks loose – alarms wailing, lights flashing and me thrashing about on the brink of an industrial-strength panic attack. Ever had one? Now they’re a joy. I live in a townhouse with lovely

neighbours only a building block away on either side. I can imagine they’ll be sitting bolt upright and wondering what the hell’s going on. Then my alarm starts wailing again. They’re designed to blast wax from your ears. And that oppressive darkness. Even if the neighbours do respond, they can’t get in. I am sitting here, perspiring freely and my heart beating a tattoo on my rib cage. I hear you – what about your phone or the manual instructions to stop the alarm? Too obvious. I prefer to respond to a crisis with panic. That’s the way I’m wired. After the third round of wailing alarms I’m waiting for the fire crews to burst through my garage door with the jaws of life. Or the cops to beat down my front door. What a mess! I had my own little Armistice moment 20 minutes later when calm fell on the Western Front. Alarms went silent, garage door went up, a shirt drenched in sweat was changed and angst levels eased. It’s a wonderful sensation coming out the other end of a panic attack. Neighbours told me later they didn’t hear a thing. Bloody lovely! I could have died in there and no-one would have known!

Later that day…

Later the same day, same car, different issue…this time road rage! I’m exiting a slip lane into Chapel St, about to “merge like a zip” when a small zippy car undertakes me. I made the mistake of tooting.

Next minute there’s a two-finger salute from the driver’s window. She’s mouthing something pertaining to sex and me being born out of wedlock. Things scale up – a half-full plastic bottle of Coke is lobbed from the driver’s window. It was perfectly executed, because it arced and smashed into the front of my car. Then came the cartoned remains of a KFC meal – bones, potato and gravy. She was angry and I got the full menu. A hundred metres up the road at the traffic lights, the door flies open and a young woman in a onesie and bare feet strides toward my car. She’s florid with rage, fists clenched, nostrils flared – I suspect my toot is going to cost me a good slapping. I hit the central locking – this time by choice. A third party saved me – “Don’t do it lady!” he yelled, and she didn’t. Scary – I was shaking. A wee bit of patience and a little road courtesy would have cost nothing. For my part, it wasn’t a long, angry toot, more a surprised ‘what the hell?’ toot. But you never know how it will be received.

Wait! There’s more!

Five hours later when leaving work I discovered someone had swiped my rear fender. No note, no sorry; nothing. Just a $400 insurance excess bill, a whole lot of inconvenience and another major mood shift. Have a happy day everyone! Email: hunter@thesun.co.nz

New closing times a ‘tough’ move Bars in Tauranga’s CBD are worried an earlier closing time will be tough on businesses that are already quiet. From next February, city centre bars will close at 2am instead of 3am; and one-way door restrictions will start at 1am. People won’t be able to enter a licensed premise after 1am; and if they leave, they can’t return. These are provisions of the Local Alcohol Policy adopted at a Tauranga City Council Strategy, Finance and Risk Committee Meeting on Monday. The policy has gone through several changes and public engagement since November 2021. The council waited to adopt it until after the Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Community Participation) Amendment Act 2023 came into force in August. The 2am closing time is a shift from what the committee decided last June and consulted on. The last draft policy retained the 3am closing time.

Pretty quiet

Cornerstone Bar opens until 3am on weekends with live bands playing until close. One of the managers, Natalie McDonald, says weekends have been “pretty quiet” so to lose an hour of trading was “pretty tough” for Tauranga’s hospitality venues. “Having that whole hour cut off is quite a lot of business to lose.” The committee wanted to prevent people travelling from bars in Mount Maunganui to Tauranga to continue drinking. Commissioner Stephen Selwood

From next February, city centre bars will have to close at 2am instead of 3am. Photos: Supplied. said: “I think a consistent closing time is the most important”. “Otherwise you’re just encouraging people to go from one side of town to the other, to get their last hour in.” There was confusion over when Mount bars closed, but staff informed the committee it was 1am. This prompted the committee to include the oneway door policy from 1am. Commission chair Anne Tolley said: “That’s what we’re trying to stop. They leave the Mount and come to the centre city.” Natalie says if people were at a point where they shouldn’t be drinking anymore, then that was fine. However, those that could continue their night should be allowed to. “It’s a lot of business that we could potentially have that will be now...not be coming over here. “Everyone knows the Mount is busier than the city at the moment. You only need to walk

down the street on a Friday or Saturday night to see how quiet it is in the CBD.”

Not a fan

Crown & Badger operations manager Katja Halbgewachs agreed it will prevent people coming from the Mount. The English-style tavern has a licence until 2am so will only be affected by the one-way door policy. “We definitely think it’s going to be bad for the city centre. We’re not a fan of the decision.” Miss Gee’s Bar & Eatery opens until 3am Friday and Saturday. Owner Ashleigh Gee declined to comment. The Local Alcohol Policy, which includes other changes, will be publicly notified on November 11. The changes come into force February 12, 2024. Public Interest

4 Powerlifter Karen Humphreys is now a Commonwealth record-holder! Photo: John Borren.

Karen’s got the power! It was one of those slow-mo movie moments when Karen Humphreys realised she’d won gold at the world champs, leaping into her coach’s arms as she was carried off the stage in victory! The Omanawa woman had travelled to Mongolia to compete in the International Powerlifting Federation’s World Classic & Equipped Masters Powerlifting Championships 2023, from October 8-15. She cleaned up against her competitors, winning gold for a 117.5kg squat and a 145kg deadlift, and taking silver for a 60kg bench in her division. What’s more, Karen’s squat, deadlift and overall total broke a new Commonwealth record!

‘Astonishing’

The 60-year-old began powerlifting in 2019 after her daughter suggested the sport to her. “I was too old for boxing anymore and I don’t like doing things unless I can compete, so I jumped into a little local club, went into one of those typical 12-week challenges…and went from there!” Did she think she’d end up being a world champ a few years later? “Absolutely no way…it’s astonishing really.” It shouldn’t be a surprise however, as Karen trains

hard at Ruthless Barbell Club in Tauranga City. “My training sessions take up to three hours a session, and I’m doing it four days a week, that’s a lot of time away from family and home. It’s a lot of commitment if you want to be competitive.” Karen’s diet also has to be very “controlled”. “There’s a percentage of protein that you must eat, a percentage of carbs you must eat then a percentage of low fats.”

Victory moment

Karen was the last lifter in her division at Mongolia’s world champs and knew if she succeeded with her last deadlift, she’d be the victor. “I knew that no one was going to be after me…so if I got that final lift – that it was mine.” And of course she did! Throwing down her 145kg weight, Karen got her gold champ movie moment. “My coach Mike Jones ran up the ramp clapping and I came off the stage quite quickly and I just leapt into his arms then he carried me off the stage! “It was really cool and singing the NZ national anthem standing on that podium…I got through twoquarters, then the tears started. That’s when it really hit home…very special.” It’s no rest for the wicked however. Karen says: “I will be targeting for worlds next year in South Africa”. Watch this space! Georgia Minkhorst

Speed limit consultation in WBOP Western Bay of Plenty Council is asking residents to submit feedback on its draft Speed Management Plan 2023, with public consultation closing November 23.

According to council, the draft plan – which can be viewed at: haveyoursay.westernbay.govt.nz/smp – is in response to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Road to Zero national road safety strategy aimed at reducing deaths and serious injuries from crashes. The plan focuses on lowering speed limits around schools, rural roads and in town centres. Western BOP James Denyer says with a growing and increasingly busy community, it’s important to make sure our roads are safer for everyone.

Balance

“As a council, we want to balance Waka Kotahi’s recommendations for significantly lower speed limits with a pragmatic approach that achieves community buy-in. We want to improve safety on our roads, whilst not excessively hindering their primary purpose, which is to move people and goods around efficiently.” WBOP’s draft Speed Management Plan includes the following. Safer speeds around schools, including a variable speed limit of 30km/hr at drop-off and pick-up times and 50km/hr at other times for urban schools and 60km/hr for rural schools. A 50km/hr speed limit in urban areas with the exception of schools, marae, town centres and community identified areas. A proposed 80km/ hr speed limit in rural areas with the exception of schools, marae, town centres and communityidentified areas. For Te Puke and Ōmokoroa town centres to h ave a 40km/hr speed limit. Waihī Beach is already 40km/hr;

Add a secondary/minor dwelling

and as Katikati’s main road is a state highway – Waka Kotahi has proposed a 40km/hr speed limit, which the council fully supports. Changes will unfold by prioritising areas with highest need first in the next three years; including schools, Māori communities, town centres, identified rural roads and community identified-roads. The Mayor says where a current speed limit is lower than outlined, the lower limit will remain. According to WBOPDC, a range of criteria has been used to determine appropriate speed limits for local roads, including safe speeds identified by Waka Kotahi, community feedback and local knowledge, and talking with schools, Māori communities and community boards. “We listened to the strong community feedback and took this into account when suggesting some lower speed limits. We want to improve the safety on and around our roads, while making sure local people and commercial vehicles can move around our district efficiently,” says the Mayor. “These conversations have guided our thinking – but before we go any further and begin to make these proposed changes, we want to check-in with you and see whether we’ve got the balance right? Have we missed anything?” The Western Bay Speed Management Plan only applies to the local road network. Waka Kotahi has developed an interim Draft Speed Management Plan for the State Highway network.

A culture and football clash!

Cultures will be kicked about in a positive way as a football tournament – which aims to bring ethnic communities together via sport – returns to Tauranga tomorrow.

The Ethkick five-aside football tournament – hosted by Multicultural Tauranga – is on this

Saturday, November 4, from 10am at Blake Park. Multicultural Tauranga president Premila D’Mello says last year Ethkick was cancelled due to Covid and bad weather – but this year’s event will go ahead rain, hail or shine! The five-aside football tournament draws teams from a diverse range of cultures and ethnic communities, allowing them to connect on and off the field through their love of football. “Many of the ethnic communities are crazy about football and playing this sport together fosters unity,” says Premila. The first Ethkick was held in 2010 and won a New Zealand Diversity award that year, after being “started as a medium to bring ethnic communities together around sports”. This year’s Tauranga tournament will have 14 teams compete – with players from about 25 countries including from Czech Republic, Solomon Islands, Chinese, Nepalese, Fiji and Kiribati. Captain of the Czech Republic team, Jindrich Hahn, says his team had their biggest Ethkick success in 2019 when they made it into the national finals. Yet they saw victory pipped in the game’s final moments. “I ruptured my Achilles in the final game – two minutes before the end of the actual tournament,” says Jindrich. Tied at zero, the Czech Republic team lost by penalty shoot-out to the Palestinian Panthers. “We’ll be

happy if we’re lucky to get to the finals [held in Wellington] and can win the tournament.” No matter how they do at this weekend’s tournament, Jindrich says: “What I like about Ethkick is that there’s different nationalities coming together”. “They’re putting their culture aside and you can see only the passion from each continent. It helps bridge all forms of diversity – whether it be religion, social or language and it promotes social cohesion,” says Premila. “I believe it’s good for the mind and the soul of people to be playing together and playing the sport,” says Jindrich. “Especially because we’re living in a very fragile world now, with lots of things happening... so it’s just about putting that voice to the side and just playing, and having good fun.” Ethkick starts 10am Saturday, November 4, at Blake Park – spectators are welcome to watch the beautiful games for themselves!

Wairoa Cycleway nearly complete The 19km Ōmokoroa to Bethlehem cycleway is expected to be finished at the end of this month as contractors now work on constructing the final part of the project. According to Tauranga City Council, its contractors are now constructing the signalised crossing – traffic light – on State Highway 2 to provide a safer path for cyclists to reach a new connection to

Carmichael Rd. “This will enable safer cycling on the narrow strip of SH2 between the Wairoa Bridge and Bethlehem. “To reduce potential congestion, this work will take place at night. “These works are not expected to impact traffic flow in the area during the day.” For more on the project, see: letstalk.tauranga.govt.nz/projects/ wairoa-cycleway

A historical garden party The Tauranga Historical Society invites you to step back in time this weekend for an enchanting experience at the Brain-Watkins Garden Party! It’s the 44th year that this annual event will be held and promises to transport you through Tauranga’s history. Hosted at the Brain-Watkins House Museum, the garden party will have plenty to intrigue people attracted to times gone by. “We are thrilled to invite the community to join us in celebrating the rich history and unique charm of Brain-Watkins House Museum,” says Tauranga Historical Society president Debbie McCauley. “The Brain-Watkins House Museum dates back to 1881 and holds a unique treasure trove of history, particularly the story of women with an extensive textile and costume collection.” Of course it wouldn’t be a garden party without tea and cake! Delicious Devonshire tea will be only a pour away under the Tremains Marquee and an abundance of cakes will be on offer from the Vintage Café. There will also be stalls to browse,

This event is not only a window into the captivating past of Tauranga, but also a wonderful way to ensure this precious piece of our history lives on,” says Debbie. All proceeds from the garden party will contribute to maintaining the Brain-Watkins House Museum. “Your presence at the BrainWatkins Garden Party supports the preservation of this historical gem!” The garden party is 11am-3pm on Sunday, November 5, at Brain-Watkins House Museum, 233 Cameron Rd. In recent years the unwanted organism has spread in New Zealand – now Kiwis are asked to help slow the spread to protect our taonga species and help to track its movement. “Taking care of our planet is certainly an intergenerational effort – and TMBC is working hard to educate people of all ages to engage with the protection of our flora and fauna,” says TMBC co-chair Beccy Ganley. “The Protectors of Papatūānuku Creative Challenge is one way that TMBC helps ignite interest and passion in our local community.” Submissions were put up for public votes and winners could win from a $2000 prize pool, with the ultimate prize including the opportunity

to showcase the artwork on a series of digital billboards throughout the rohe. Beccy says biosecurity is an important concept for all of Kiwis to understand. “Protecting our flora and fauna from predators, diseases and pathogens is something we can all play a part in. “This challenge is particularly timely as myrtle rust could decimate our beloved pōhutukawa – a tree that plays a role in our environment’s stability and is culturally significant not only to tangata whenua but to all New Zealanders.” Out of dozens of entries, the overall compeition winner is Stella Bardsley, who was inspired to create her artowrk by Aotearoa’s natural beauty, culture, unique flora, and animals. “My grandmother always had baby lambs on her farm in spring and bottle-feeding them is one of my best memories,” says Stella. “My favourite tree is the pōhutukawa. It’s a great climbing tree with bright red flowers Debbie Griffiths representing our Christmas.”

Vitamin C is essential for your skin’s health The concept of taking Vitamin C as an oral supplement for good health is nothing new. However vitamin C is also essential for the health of your skin.

What most people don’t know is when taken orally very little, if any, actually gets to the skin at all. For this reason, a topically-applied

vitamin C should be part of every person’s daily skincare regime. Vitamin C – when topically applied – is one of the most effective and powerful serums for skin health. It is taken orally because of its amazing antioxidant properties – that’s also the case when applied topically. Antioxidants fight harmful free radicals in the skin caused by the environment, smoking, stress, some foods and alcohol.

Free radicals cause havoc with the skin’s cells leading to premature ageing – so protecting your skin cells from this damage results in a stronger, more vibrant-looking skin. Vitamin C is also essential for formation of new collagen. Building new collagen enables you to maintain a more youthful, smoother skin, which is essential as we age. This remarkable product also strengthens cell walls, providing healthier cells and therefore visibly healthier skin. Vitamin C also acts as a

melanin inhibitor that inhibits formation of pigmented spots forming in the skin, giving you a much clearer, even-toned appearance. Everyone should use vitamin C daily as it has a life in the skin of about 18 hours. Vitamin C can be applied on all

skin types – but I recommend visiting your beauty therapist for advice. Talk to our therapists about the best option for your skincare.

Cosmetics, veins and much more... With her experience in hospitals and general practice and a dozen post-graduate qualifications, Cosmetic & Vein Clinic’s Dr Anuya Deshpande is a medical Swiss army knife.

Cosmetic & Veins Clinic owner Dr Anuya Deshpande in her happy place.

This gives both her cosmetic and varicose veins patients access to diagnostic and clinical systems that safely get results, with great follow-up care. After graduating from Manchester University Medical School in 2001, Dr Anuya practiced as a GP for eight years. In the 22 years since she graduated she’s completed around 12 postgraduate qualifications including in cosmetic medicine, dermatology, skin cancer medicine, skin cancer surgery, varicose vein treatments, and ultrasound. “All of the qualifications I gained were to fill a need. When I was practising in Gisborne six years ago there was a need for skin cancer treatment and dermatology, so I trained to provide that.” Last year she attained a fellowship with the Australasian College of Phlebology, which classes her as a veins specialist, and allows her to train other doctors. While much of her clinical work is in varicose

vein treatment, she also maintains a busy cosmetic practice that’s currently expanding with the addition of a medical-grade, multi-platform laser skin resurfacing system for the treatment of acne, rosacea and melasma, as well as anti-aging through resurfacing and collagen stimulation.

“Medical grade lasers are like Ferraris – they are a lot more powerful, you need to know how to drive them and where to use the power. There is a shortage of medically-trained cosmetic dermatologists who combine the medical knowledge with the aesthetic skills.”

School therapy dog ‘Roxy’ Have your ever heard of a school having a therapy dog? Well, Te Manawa ō Pāpāmoa School has one named ‘Roxy’.

BOOK ONLINE

A favourite

Roxy started going to school one day each week, but since becoming a favourite she’s in all the time. “Everyone loves her,” says Cath. “She gets very excited when we get to school. Just as we arrive at school she’s always jumping around the car,” says Cath. “She’s

breeder, Cath says Roxy’s breed makes her particularly perfect for the job, with a good temperament and wool instead of fur making her hypoallergenic. “She was born for the role!” Cath says Roxy – the gentle, lazy dog – has made a difference at school. “The kids respond to her really well. We’ve found a really big difference having Roxy around.” Younger children a bit anxious

about coming to school are often told: ‘Get out of the car – look, Roxy’s here to see you! Do you want to walk Roxy to your classroom?’ “This kind of breaks the separation in the morning from the parent. It gives them something else to focus on.”

Calming effect

Moreover, Cath believes pets in schools are a great way for kids to settle into school – especially for those with diverse needs. “If children are ever heightened or need to talk things through we always sit them with the dog first and just give them a chance to calm down.” Children who may be doing the wrong thing, or exhibit escalating behaviour, are sat down with Roxy before teachers talk to them. “They’re always way calmer and able to talk through things.” Cath says with Te Manawa ō Pāpāmoa, staff take the time to ‘meet and greet’ with each family “and Roxy is part of this process”. Cath says having Roxy at school is a point of difference. “I’m heavily involved in learning support – so children with additional needs. “For me it’s just one more way of ensuring everyone is calm and happy at school.”

Ayla Yeoman

Keep pets happy and calm this Guy Fawkes Guy Fawkes can certainly be an enjoyable event. However, this time of year can also be a very stressful time for our pets. Fireworks can cause a lot of anxiety in animals, as well as be the cause of horrific injuries to not just pets, but wildlife and stock. Our clinics receive lots of enquiries during this time from owners worried about how to help their pets cope with Guy Fawkes – which is on this Sunday, November 5.

After seeing the positive impact of therapy dogs in schools, prisons and older peoples’ care facilities, principal Cath Humphries decided to pitch the idea to her board of trustees. “We had Roxy assessed to check her ability to be around children,” says Cath. Now Roxy’s happy face lights up classrooms and children’s eyes daily at Te Manawa ō Pāpāmoa School, with her tail constantly wagging. Cath says Roxy is just about to turn 13. “Now that she’s getting old she’s pretty quiet at school and at home; there’s a lot of sleeping. She’s pretty placid, she always has been.”

Here’s some helpful tips. Where possible keep your pets inside during the celebration. Reduce the amount of noise and bright flashes by closing windows and doors, drawing curtains. Turn the TV or radio up louder. If your pet becomes frightened, give them somewhere to hide until it is all over. Under the bed in the bedroom is always a safe haven. Leave them there until they come out on their own. Remember: this Sunday, November 5 – keep your pets inside and safe on Guy Fawkes night!

HELP STOP THE SPREAD OF EXOTIC CAULERPA Exotic Caulerpa was first found in New Zealand waters in 2021 and since then has been found in waters at Great Barrier Island (Aotea), Great Mercury Island (Ahuahu), Te Rāwhiti Inlet in the Bay of Islands, Kawau Island, and Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. These exotic seaweeds can spread rapidly, forms vast dense underwater fields and could affect native species. As far as we know it’s not currently present in the Bay of Plenty and we need everyone on high alert to ensure that it doesn’t arrive and establish here.

HOW YOU CAN HELP • If you are heading out of the region on your boat check the locations where exotic caulera has been found and what legal controls are in place.

• Learn how to identify it and check your anchor, chain, and fishing gear every time you move locations.

• If you find exotic Caulerpa, don’t put it back in the sea. Place it in a plastic bag or bucket and put it in the rubbish back on land.

Fishing comp to hook funds for new boat! Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard invites the public to enter its firstever fishing competition next weekend in an effort to hook remaining funds needed for its $2.7m new vessel arriving next month. The Cast Your Line For Coastguard competition is on November 11, tasking keen anglers to catch the longest measured fish in three categories – snapper, Kingfish and tarakihi – with more than $10,000 in prizes, raffles and auctions up for grabs. Tauranga Coastguard operations manager Dane Robertson says his unit’s first fishing comp is aimed at fundraising some of the remaining $120,000 needed to fund their new vessel being built. “We thought it’d be a great idea because we’re a charity involved with water and

Tauranga Moana. And that goes hand-in-hand with people who use the same water for recreational activities such as fishing.” Dane says the first 50 skippers to enter will receive a skipper’s pack, including an official measuring ruler. “If people aren’t in the first 50, many will have a ruler – if not, they can purchase them at Tauranga Sport Fishing Club.

Measure and release

“The idea of the competition is that anglers measure and photograph each fish, then release it back into the water. “We have a video on our website on how to effectively and safely do this.” Funds raised will go towards the last $120,000 the coastguard needs to pay for its new vessel. “The vessel initially was supposed to cost $2.3 million but prior to the start of the build in 2022 the builders came back to us saying the price would go

up to $2.7 million – mostly due to the record high aluminium prices. “The unit opted to go ahead – as it will never be cheaper to build the boat than now, so we’ve just had to find the extra money. We’re nearly there.” The new vessel will sport the latest technology – and be a huge asset to the East Coast during emergencies. “In terms of some of the electronic equipment – we’ll have the same kind as the US Coastguard. “An incident management team will be able set up a search pattern and email it to the boat – the boat will have the ability to automatically conduct the search pattern.” The boat will have a FLIR camera with 30-times zoom and night vision. “This means we can pick things up on the radar, then spin the camera round and focus it on that object.” The camera will also detect moving – or warm – objects in water. “The on-board equipment

Tauranga Coastguard’s current rescue boat will soon be replaced by a more sophisticated, vessel. Photo: Coastguard NZ.

will be much more sophisticated. It will definitely save lives,” says Dane.

A strategic boat

The new vessel will use about 40 per cent less diesel than Tauranga Coastguard’s current rescue boat and will move faster. “Our current vessel’s maximum speed is 27 knots – the new boat will have a maximum speed of 42 knots, which is very fast, almost 80km/hr.” As such, Coastguard New Zealand view Tauranga’s new vessel as a strategic boat for the coastline from the Coromandel down past Tauranga to Whakatāne. “It has the ability to support other units if there’s a need;

and the ability to go 50 nautical miles from shore, which is a long way out.” Cast Your Line For Coastguard’s competition briefing is 6.30pm Friday, November 10, at Tauranga Sports Fishing Club – with fishing to begin straight afterwards until 3pm, Saturday, November 11. Prizegiving is 6.30pm. Entry is $50 per adult and $25 per junior. Enter online at: www.tsfc.co.nz/ event/tauranga-coastguard-fishingcompetition-2023 Entries will be accepted up to 6.30pm, November 10 at Tauranga Sports Fishing Club. A host of talent

Featuring with John and the brothers are a host of talent, from band guitarist Mike Kirk – a veteran of B-Side Band and Kokomo – to John’s son Dylan Israel of Summer Thieves on keyboards, Lewis Martin on sax, Nick Ririnui percussing, Porina McLeod supplying backing vocals and Mike Butler on harmonica.

Grant Haua

The Mount’s Matty Buxton also has a new single ‘Either Way’, which follows last month’s ‘Sober’ and is more up-tempo and guitar-oriented but equally catchy. He sounds a bit like Ed Sheeran to me and it’s a well-crafted piece of pop music. And last thing. It’s being ‘officially’ launched at The NZ Blues & BBQs Festival in Rotorua at the end of this month but, if you just can’t wait, Grant Haua’s new album has sneaked its way onto Spotify. It’s called ‘Mana Blues’. Unsurprisingly, it’s rather good. ****************************************** Hear Winston’s latest Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7f6v2I3wFHJn GD8sD5SYfT?si=d1de6d8e4d79432e

Epic chance to win and pay it forward! shopping-spree “Shoppers can enter at: www. tepukeonline.nz with their receipt or in participating stores.” The winner is drawn Monday, December 4, and will receive a ‘shopping spree morning’ to spend

$800 of their prize – including the $100 pay-it-forward money. The remaining $200 can be spent later. “Past winners have had an absolute blast – so don’t forget to enter the competition this month!”

Get your shopping groove on in Te Puke this month to be in the draw to win an epic cash prize in the township early-December! That’s the advice from Rebecca Larsen, who runs the EPIC Te Puke Shopping Spree – on from now until December 2. Rebecca says anyone who spends any amount of money on products and services at participating Te Puke businesses during November has a chance to win $1000 worth of EPIC Te Puke dollars. “The competition is unique because it utilises our EPIC Te Puke dollars – which support our

local businesses – and there’s a pay-it-forward component. Each year the winning shopper can spend up to $100 of EPIC dollars in each participating store, until they reach $900. “The remaining $100 has to be paid forward to a charity or group doing good in our community. “In the past foodbank has received the $100; a kindy received the funds to buy books; someone put $100 credit at a pharmacy for those struggling to afford prescriptions; things like that...” Rebecca says Te Puke businesses really come together for the promotion – a list of those participating this year is at: www.tepukeonline.nz/p/63651-christmas-

Art and creative crafts to behold or buy It’s almost time for the Te Puke Arts Society’s annual exhibition, where amazing art and creative crafts will be on display and available for purchase.

The exhibition will be held 9am-4pm from November 3-12 at the historic Constable’s Gallery on Commerce Lane in Te Puke. “Normally, the exhibition runs for one weekend – but this year it is being held for a week-and-a-half, to give people more of a chance to come and see the arts and crafts,” says Te Puke Art Society secretary Ali Thomas. There will be lots of new art on the wall, created by members of the Te Puke Arts Society within the past year, with a range of styles, mediums and subject matters on display – including painted rocks. The Quilting Exhibition at Te Puke Arts Society will put artists’ amazing quilts, sewing, knitting and crafts into the exhibition as well.

The annual People’s Choice Award gives visitors the opportunity to vote for their favourite piece of art or craft work, which then gets tallied up at the week’s end. The winning artist will receive a certificate and a boost to their confidence. There will be raffle prizes, which will be drawn at the end of the week, for $2 per ticket or three for $5. The money from the raffle goes back into the maintenance of the Constable’s Gallery. Eftpos is available for purchases, and “prices are pretty reasonable, too,” says Ali.

Enjoy the Masters of Melody! The symphonia will present full orchestral forces, a brand-new commission, and a star violinist all under the baton of up-and-coming conductor Euan Safey. The concert opens with the evocative overture to Mozart’s most famous opera ‘The Magic Flute’ which will transport the audience into a world of light and dark, truth and mystery, in true Mozart fashion. The ‘2nd Violin Concerto’ by Polish composer Henryk Wieniawski requires a master of the violin to perform. Enter Andrew Beer, who is sure to rise to the task and dazzle audiences with his virtuosity – as he did in his 2021performance of the ‘Four Seasons’ with BOP Symphonia. Thanks to a generous bequest, BOP Symphonia has commissioned noted New Zealand composer and performer – and Tauranga Girls’ College old girl – Briar Prastiti to write a new composition

Where we find true hope... As we start approaching the end of another year, and reflect on it, it’s not unusual to feel a little downcast and perhaps even a sense of despair. For despite the optimism we feel at the start of each New Year, ultimately the world has not really improved or become a better place.

Ladies from 18 upwards - if you fancy getting out on the water - contact the Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club as WOW starting soon

Romantic melodies and lush violin sounds will fill Holy Trinity Church when Bay of Plenty Symphonia takes to the stage for their final concert of 2023 – titled ‘Masters of Melody’.

specifically for this orchestra. In her piece ‘Pegasus’, this year’s Douglas Lilburn Trust Composer in Residence draws inspiration from both her Greek heritage and upbringing in Tauranga. The concert will close with Mendelssohn’s ‘Symphony no. 5’, nicknamed ‘Reformation’. Rich in variety, listeners can expect to be surrounded in rich orchestral resonance, fiery strings, luminescent dances, prayerlike moments, and finally a mighty chorale reminiscent of Bach. ‘Masters of Melody’ Andrew Beer. is on November 19 at 3pm at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport Rd. Tickets cost $20 for adults and under18s can attend without a ticket, from: www.eventfinda.co.nz

The good news, though, is many of the Psalms in the Old Testament speak directly from this place of despair and down-heartedness, and point to where we find true hope. Psalm 44:5 asks the question directly: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?” The Psalmist then continues by pointing to the one true source of hope: “Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God”. In the New Testament of the Bible, this hope of salvation in God has its ultimate fulfilment in the God-man, Jesus Christ. This is why, in a few weeks, we’ll begin to celebrate Advent – the first coming of

Jesus when He was born in the lowliest of places, an animals’ stable in Bethlehem. In Ephesians 2:12, the Apostle Paul reminds the common people of the day when – although they formerly had no knowledge about God and of His great love for them, and consequently they had no hope – things had now changed because of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. And then after His ascension into heaven, the giving of the Holy Spirit became a reality for anyone who believes in or trusts in Jesus. Christ is now the source of true hope, real joy, and always-lasting peace. In Romans 15:13, Paul puts it this way: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope”. Dear reader, have you found true hope and come to know the love of God for you, personally, in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ?

Meet’ Bruce Tait, is also hoping the day will go off with a bang.

For some years now this event has been staged at the Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club’s clubrooms venue in Cliff Rd Tauranga. “The event has grown like topsy – and once again we’re expecting a good turnout from the motoring fraternity as well as the general public,” says Bruce. There’ll be a good assembly of classic and vintage cars on display and the BOP Vintage Car Club is keen to hear from anyone who has an older car that they’d like to bring along. “If you come along with an older car for display purposes, we’ll let you in for free,” says Bruce.

not only old car parts, but on the search for something quirky and unusual. “It’s always interesting seeing the smiles on people’s faces as they leave our Cliff Rd venue carrying all sorts of stuff that they probably weren’t expecting to own 30 minutes earlier,” says Bruce with a laugh. “What with the Vintage Car Club also preserving older cars, I guess you can say that we promote recycling!” The Annual Family Show is affordable entertainment and there’ll be plenty of refreshments on hand to suit the tastes of older and younger visitors. Gates open to the public at 10am, those setting up stalls and bringing their vehicles ideally should be there by 7.30am. Admission on the day is just $5 per person or $15 per family.
