A FALL MESSAGE FROM SUNNYVALE RECREATION
There’s been a lot of bad news lately! So here’s some good news about your forward thinking Sunnyvale Library and Recreation Services Department. Our focus continues to be on supporting our community. Here are some things we’ve done already, some things we are doing right now and some things we have planned for the future. This Summer, we had a very safe and successful Camp experience for hundreds of Sunnyvale kids. And, our Aquatics team dove right in to open the Sunnyvale Swim Complex at Fremont High School to the community when the long-time operator had to cancel their contract. Currently, our Sunnyvale Serves team continues to provide meals and grocery delivery to Sunnyvale’s at-risk seniors while offering online programming keeping people connected and active. We have created a daily distance learning and recreation experience for kids currently housed at the County Homeless Shelter in cooperation with local school districts. And the Library is providing an average of 3,000 books and other materials every day through our Sidewalk Services. Coming up, we are hosting Celebrate Sunnyvale, a virtual event where you can hear the State of the City address, on Saturday, September 19, 2020 (see page 7). This description of all the great things happening in Sunnyvale will be followed by a presentation of the 2020 Community Award winners. The Washington Pool Complex is on schedule to open Spring 2021 while the renovation of Fair Oaks Park and the inclusive playground have final approval and should be ready for unveiling in the summer of 2022. And the new Master Plan for Public Art is in place, ready to guide programs promoting accessible public art across Sunnyvale. As we head into Fall, we are making plans to offer a variety of safe classes and activities to keep you and your family healthy and engaged. Feel free to send your program ideas and questions to recreation@sunnyvale.ca.gov. Sincerely, Cherise Brandell Director of Library and Recreation Services 4
See page 6 with an updated information from the Director.
OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19 UPDATED Dec. 7, 2020 See next page for additional information
What We’ve Done
We have created a new approach to our 2020 Fall programming to fit the needs of our current state of shelter-in-place, using the most strict State and/or County guidelines. Our staff are constantly working to make more classes, both virtual and in-person, available to you. Since our class offerings continue to grow and change, we have made a new type of Fall Activity guide: Class titles are all highlighted to help you quickly identify what classes are Currently Available or Not Available at This Time .
We will continue to update the this guide online noting the edition date on the front cover so you can easily see if anything has changed. Staff has written new class protocols so that those who are high risk or not comfortable attending in person have virtual options available, and those who attend in-person classes have options that are consistent with applicable State and County guidelines.
Class Modifications, Class Sizes & Social Distancing • Increasing virtual class offerings to make our recreation programs available from the comfort of your own home. • Our indoor facility capacities are closed (Purple Tier). • Our “drop-in” programs are currently not offered (shelter-in-place). • See Actvities Registration Policy and Procedures in the back of the guide for more information on Youth participation requirements.
Check Sunnyvale.ca.gov/ virus for possible postponements
• All of our in-person art, sports, dance and fitness classes are canceled for the remainder of the Fall session.
Face Coverings & Health Screenings Staff are required to wear a face covering at all times (indoors and outdoors). All customers, participants or members of the public over the age of 2, are required to wear a face covering* at all times (indoors and outdoors). *For a list of exemptions from wearing a face covering visit the Santa Clara County Public Health website.
State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy
TIER PURPLE: SHELTER-IN-PLACE
In August, the State released its Blueprint for a Safer Economy, which created a tiered system of COVID-19 restrictions that must be followed. As our county moves into new tiers, staff plans to evaluate class offerings and expand them as resources and health orders allow. As of Dec. 7, Santa Clara County has issued a shelter-in-place order. County officials are encouraging everyone to following protocols as cases rise in the coming weeks of winter. Continue to keep your distance, wear your mask and get tested to help our County prevent the spread and move to Red Risk Tier (Tier 2). For more details on the different orders visit: https://bit.ly/UpdatedSCCHealthOrder. 5
A Letter from the Director of Library and Recreation Services on the Most Recent COVID-19 County Update Dec. 7, 2020 Dear Participant, Thank you for registering for a Sunnyvale Recreation program. We continue working hard to follow all health protocols for all our classes with your safety and the safety of our staff in mind. Today, the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health moved to implement the State’s new regional stay at home order that will go into effect on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. The intent behind this order is to reduce gatherings in public, slow the spread of COVID 19 and lessen the impact on hospital ICU’s and health care workers. Considering this information, staff have reviewed the protocols for this new order and are implementing the following changes: Effective Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, the following programs are canceled (see * for exception). Participants will receive prorated refunds. • Kidz Love Soccer Classes
• Outdoor Zumba
• Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League classes and camp
• Meditation and Visualization
• Chang Tai Do Karate • Futsal Kingz Outdoor Soccer
• Outdoor Yoga and Outdoor Yoga Lite • Seated Fitness / SunnyFit (*class has been changed to virtual only)
• Aqua Zumba, Deep Water Fitness and Water Fitness Classes The following programs will continue to operate: • Lap swim at Sunnyvale Swim Complex (with a 12 ft social distancing check-in line) • Super Safari Preschool • Distance learning • Holiday camp • Santa at the Orchard Drive-Thru event, Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020. We understand these are challenging times. Staff will begin to process prorated refunds next week. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain our excellent safety record. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our team during office hours, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. by 408-730-7350 or by emailing recreation@sunnyvale.ca.gov. Sincerely, Cherise Brandell City of Sunnyvale Director, Library and Recreation Services For more information about the new order, please review the Bay Area Health Officer press release.
