Spooky Savannah

If your love of history leans more to the supernatural this time of year, Savannah, Georgia offers plenty of ghost tours that can introduce you to the eerie and unexplained, complete with a bit of the chills.

6TH SENSE WORLD

Three miles from downtown Savannah is the 100-plus-acre famed Bonaventure Cemetery, immortalized in the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil novel. It’s free to roam the beautiful cemetery on your own, but a tour will bring so much more of it “to life.” 6th Sense World’s original Bonaventure

Ghostly treats await those who tour one of America’s most haunted cities

Cemetery Tour is available twice a day, seven days a week. You’ll learn about the famous people who are buried here, including songwriter Johnny Mercer, sculptor John Walz, Pulitzer Prize poet Conrad Aiken and author and screenplay writer Harry Hervey. The company also offers an evening walking Sixth Sense Savannah Ghost Tour, which they tout as “The Truthseeker’s Tour.” Highlights include the Espy House, the Mercer House, Calhoun Square and more. 6thsenseworld.com

GHOSTS & GRAVESTONES

Hop on the Old Town Trolley for a nighttime “frightseeing” tour through Savannah’s Historic District. You’ll hear spooky tales of Savannah’s past from your “Ghost Hosts” while you drive by antebellum mansions, battlegrounds and Savannah’s squares. The brave can step off the trolley and into two of Savannah’s most haunted buildings with exclusive access. The first stop is the Andrew Low House. A wealthy Savannah businessman, Low commissioned renowned architect John Norris to build his mansion, which combines Grecian, Italianate and Gothic Revival styles. Tour the home, which was also where Andrew Low’s son lived with his wife Juliette Gordon, the founder of the Girl Scouts of The USA. GHOST CITY TOURS

The Grave Tales Ghost Tour is both familyand pet-friendly, making it a good choice for all ages. It includes Savannah’s history and most haunted spots, such as Colonial Park Cemetery, which opened in 1750, and Madison Square, home to such haunted houses as the Sorrel Weed House, the Green-Meldrim House and the location where the Battle of Savannah took place. The Beyond Good and Evil Tour for ages 16 and older focuses on the city’s macabre haunted history. Visits include the MercerWilliams House, 432 Albercorn and Colonial Park Cemetery. The focus is a bit darker and demonic on The Dead of Night Ghost Tour for ages 16 and older. Ages 21 and older can enjoy the Ghost City Haunted Pub Crawl, visiting historic and haunted bars and pubs and hearing their stories. ghostcitytours.com

HEARSE GHOST TOURS

Real hearses are transformed into eight “live” person tour vehicles to escort you on a spooky journey. SKY-HIGH VIEWS

Elevate your sightseeing experience in New York City

Visitors hoping to get a bird’s-eye view of the Big Apple during their trip to New York City will find several vantage points overlooking one of the most famous cities in the world.

One of the best places to take in the scenic views is the Empire State Building. Guests will be ushered through a series of exhibits on “The World’s Most Famous Building” and New York City before reaching one of two observation decks. The 86th Floor Observatory not only provides an open-air, 360-degree view of New York from 1,050 feet in the air, but also views of five nearby states on clear days. For an even more impressive vantage point, the reimagined 102nd Floor Observatory stands 1,250 feet tall and features a 360-degree view that stretches up to 80 miles into the distance through floor-to-ceiling windows. esbnyc.com

For those who want the Empire State Building in their skyline photos, Top of the Rock offers unobstructed 360-degree views of New York City all the way to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. Visitors will learn about the planning and creation of Rockefeller Center before boarding a minutelong elevator ride that takes them to the 67th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Guests can then continue to the 70th floor, open-air roof deck located 872 feet above ground, which has no glass or metal enclosures so visitors can take the perfect picture. topoftherocknyc.com

One World Observatory boasts spectacular 360-degree views of the city and its surrounding waters as well, including Ellis Island. As visitors travel to the top of the indoor observatory, they’ll enjoy various multimedia experiences that highlight the evolution, history and vibrancy of New York City. Once guests are 1,250 feet in the air, they’ll be able to see up to 45 miles in every direction. oneworldobservatory.com

AUSTIN MUSIC LIVE

Three iconic venues helped make Austin the live music capital of the world

From the moment Allegiant passengers step inside Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, it’s clear why Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World. Live music plays on six different stages throughout the terminal. But that’s just the beginning, from restaurants to retail stores, music is everywhere.

ANTONE’S NIGHTCLUB

Since 1975, blues greats have performed at Antone’s Nightclub. Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and B.B. King headlined at Antone’s, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Triple Threat Revue got their start here. If that weren’t enough, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles and Eric Clapton have stepped onstage at Antone’s, too.

The club’s new 5th Street location features photos of these and other greats hanging on white walls, a long bar under a tin ceiling and space enough for 400 music lovers. Big Henry’s, an attached record store, sells a selection of carefully curated albums. antonesnightclub.com

STUBB’S BAR-B-Q

Christopher B. Stubblefield opened his original barbecue joint in Lubbock in the 1970s. While the focus was great barbecue, great music was always a given. Over the years, Johnny Cash, George Thorogood, Willie Nelson, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others “played for their supper” at Stubb’s.

Today, the music continues to complement Stubb’s smokey fare, served in a historic 1850s limestone building in Austin. At night, concertgoers listen to rock, country and other genres at the property’s outdoor

amphitheater. On Sunday, they can atone for their revelries at Stubb’s Gospel Brunch. stubbsaustin.com

THE ACL LIVE AT THE MOODY THEATER

Although the Moody Theater opened in 2011, the PBS television program “Austin City Limits” (ACL) dates back to 1974, when a still relatively unknown Willie Nelson performed before the cameras. Since then, everyone from Jerry Lee Lewis to the Foo Fighters have appeared on what has turned out to be the longest-running music program in television history.

Allegiant passengers can buy tickets for one of 100 ACL concerts held at the theater every year. Tickets are also available for the more intimate 3TEN ACL Live venue next door. acl-live.com

THE MARVELOUS MURALS OF PUNTA GORDA

With temperatures and humidity falling to more comfortable levels, this is the perfect time of year to take a self-guided walking or biking tour of Punta Gorda’s stunning murals. Vibrant and steeped in storytelling, the 32 murals preserve the rich history of the Punta Gorda area.

Free walking/biking guides are available around town, including the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce and area hotels. These guides provide mural locations and a map, or visitors can download the mural map at their website. Each mural wall contains a QR code that can be scanned by your smart phone or tablet to access information about the mural, the artist and the scene depicted. Established as a non-profit in 1995, the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society (PGHMS) is the driving force behind the preservation of Punta Gorda’s history through its creation of public murals.

Rich in history, culture and color, these murals tell powerful stories

“The murals are considered a cherished Punta Gorda treasure,” said Kelly Gaylord, president, Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society. “Thanks to strong community support over the past 27 years, the society has created a visual roadmap of the area’s local history with its murals.”

The first mural, the Hotel Charlotte Harbor, was finished in September 1995 and dedicated the next month. With the first mural completed, the organization was off and running.

Peace River Panorama illustrates a tranquil Peace River setting surrounded by the vast diversity of flora and fauna indigenous to the area The End of the Line mural features town founder Isaac Trabue. Originally painted in 1997, it was repainted in 2009 restoring it back to its original state. Movie Memories was originally completed in 2000 but then destroyed by Hurricane Charley in 2004. example, the End of the Line mural features town founder Isaac Trabue, who was instrumental in getting the railroad built to Punta Gorda. The town prospered when the railroad arrived, and it was the “end of the line” for the west coast of Florida from 1886 until 1904.

Work on the newest mural, Boating in Paradise, was completed in July. It depicts the 70-plus year history of Punta Gorda’s first boat club.

Interestingly, artist Keith Goodson painted the mural onto mural cloth. This technology allows the artist to paint the mural in the studio. The society has used this new technique on its last three murals. For this mural, aluminum panels were installed on the front exterior of the Punta Gorda Boat Club, and then the painted mural cloth was installed on the aluminum.

In addition, the society offers History Classes and Mural Walking Tours. Learn more about the Mural Program and the rich local history of the area by attending a class or taking a

The Glass Coast

Florida’s burgeoning glass art scene has a new home

Surf, sun, sand and glass? It may be surprising to find that Sarasota is more than just a pretty place. There’s a burgeoning glass art scene that has earned it the moniker of The Glass Coast. Artists from around the world clamor to be included in the storied halls of Florida’s State Art Museum, The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and have their work exhibited in The Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion.

The 2,000-square-foot gallery space is free to visit 7 days a week, with a rotating display from the Ringling’s 300 works of glass art. This is a growing area in the museum’s permanent collection, totaling over 44,000 works, and is well worth a visit alone. Designed by Lewis + Whitlock, the Glass Pavilion fits in well amongst The Ringling’s other venues, which are as distinctive as the namesake proprietor. It’s astounding that even next to the grandeur of the 1920s mansion, Ca’ d’Zan, The Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion stands on its own, thanks to a sculptural glass and aluminum façade that enables captivating glimpses of the many beautiful works inside.

These unique works of art are more contemporary than what you’d expect to find in a museum that also houses artwork dating back to the 1500s. “There are wonderful examples by major names in the glass field. The American Studio Glass movement was really burgeoning in the 1960s and 70s,” says Curator of Ca’ d’Zan and Decorative Arts, Marissa Hershon. Pieces on view range from the 1930s to the present, illustrating the historical arc and advancements of this artistic medium over time.

“The Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion primarily focuses on 20th and 21st century glass, however, I hope to curate juxtapositions down the road with historic and

contemporary to show how artists today are often looking to art history, and even looking to techniques that date back to ancient times and reviving them.”

These glassmaking techniques date back to Renaissance artists as well as ancient Mediterranean civilizations lost to time. “There’s a great deal of Italian influence on glass artists. You’ll see different techniques that go back centuries to Venice on the island of Murano, that American glass artists of the 20th and 21st century are continuing to mine, and then giving them a new expression.”

A perfect example is Richard Marquis’ Vase which utilizes a practice named after the Venetian isle on which it originated. “That pattern you see is actually murrine, one of Marquis’ most often used techniques. Where you see those squares with the polka dots on them, each one of those was a separate slice of murrina that he’s then laid out on the marver table and rolled up into a molten glass bubble, and then formed this Vase by glass blowing.” The colorful Vase evokes both a kitschy aesthetic while exhibiting an ancient craft, creating something brand new by combining elements of the past. “He’s taking age-old techniques and giving these a completely new look.”

While the Glass Pavilion celebrates long-practicing contemporary artists, there’s still room in the medium and museum for a bit of innovation. “Amber Cowan is an artist I’ve been following for years,” says Hershon, ”She really is a trailblazer. She takes vintage glass that was made in the early 20th century at an industrial factory… and she’s taking cullet or the scrap glass that was thrown away into the trash heap, and she’s given it a whole new life by recreating it by flame working.” Those who have watched Netflix’s “Blown Away,” a glass blowing competition show, may be familiar with the technique, where instead of melting the glass in the fiery glory hole, “she uses a torch to melt the glass and reshape it and sculpt it.” The result is a beautiful collage of interrelated elements that make up the piece Bridesmaid Returns to the Shore of her Full Moon. “It’s really a showstopper, it stops you in your tracks.”

focusing on blowing glass and creating these vibrant biomorphic shapes that are just art for art’s sake.”

The museum’s acquisitions span from the functional to the decorative, literal interpretations to the more abstract. “There are a lot of artists in the glass world that find inspiration in nature,“ says Hershon, indicating

Debora Moore’s Paphiopedilum Bamboo, “and each one of them has their own unique vision.”

Gorgeous glass orchids trickle down the side of a hollow piece of bamboo that looks so life-like, you’d be forgiven for thinking it wasn’t glass.

It shares a room with Marvin Lipofsky’s San José Group 2004-06 #6, which takes inspiration from nature and turns it into something a bit more enigmatic.

“He’s another American pioneer who is pretty well-known in the glass world for his work. He really stretched the potential of glass as a sculptural medium. So, instead of it simply being a functional design, he was really

The Glass Pavilion showcases not only a high level of technical skill but also creative vision. The fragility of glass makes ambitious projects like Karen LaMonte’s Rose Dress inherently risky endeavors. The massive, life-size glass sculpture is composed of three separate pieces that were made by pouring molten glass into her own carved molds and letting them cool for months in the annealing oven. The amazing craftsmanship is evident in the sculpture, which comments on the depiction of the female figure in the history of art by its absence within the dress. “She’s basically taking the idea of the female nude and turning it on its head.”

Rose Dress is an example of Hershon’s vision for the glass collection. Both technically impressive on the surface, while expressing a deeper meaning. “I want to feature artists whose technical virtuosity is spot on,” says Hershon, “and whose work also can be enjoyed on multiple levels. It’s visually beautiful, but also, there’s symbolic meaning behind the imagery. That’s what I look for and why I put works on view… It’s that the art can speak to people on different levels.”

A DIVERSE DESTINATION

Discover the delightful coastal town of Dunedin

Travelers looking for a destination along Florida’s West Coast that has a quaint, small town feel while still boasting many big-city amenities needn’t look any further than the charming town of Dunedin. Pronounced done-ee-din, the diverse coastal town is sure to have something for everyone to enjoy.

Two of Florida’s most beautiful state parks call Dunedin home: Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island State Park. Known for its emerald green waters and baby powder-like sand, Honeymoon Island is the most visited state park in Florida. Meanwhile, Caladesi Island State Park was named the second-best beach in America on Dr. Beach’s 2022 Top 10 Beaches list thanks in part to its sparkling azure waters and soft, crystalline quartz sand. Guests can go swimming, shelling, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing at both parks, as well as look for wildlife.

A mecca for recreation lovers, Dunedin not only features 29 parks and more than 350 acres of green space, but is also regarded as the heart of the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, a 47-mile linear trail extending from St. Pete to Tarpon Springs that runs through downtown Dunedin. Guests can bike, walk, skate or jog down the paved trail, which has a multitude of unique restaurants, bars and shops to stop at along the way.

The shopping in Dunedin is actually as unique as the town itself. Guests will discover an array of locally owned businesses that specialize in handmade artisan lines not found in typical retail environments. Shoppers can purchase merchandise imported from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and other areas influenced by Celtic culture at the Celtic Shop of Dunedin; buy a variety of gifts for women, including candles, apparel and kitchen accessories, at The Ivory

Downtown Dunedin also has an organic grocery store, Nature’s Food Patch, with its own café serving smoothies and scratch-made fare like soups and sandwiches.

Dunedin is a great place for beer aficionados as well. The town has seven craft breweries located within a mile of one another — HOB Brewing Company, 7Venth Sun Brewery, Caledonia Brewing, Soggy Bottom Brewing Co., Woodwright Brewing Co., Cueni Brewing Co. and Florida’s oldest microbrewery, Dunedin Brewery — with an eighth brewery (Beach Island Brewery) located only a mile-and-a-half away from the others. There’s also a veteranowned and female-owned distillery downtown, Cotherman Distilling Co., for those who prefer vodka, gin, whiskey and rum to beer.

For visitors who would rather play a round of golf than enjoy a round of drinks, Dunedin Golf Club was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. Open to the public, the par-72 Donald Ross-designed course is one of the top courses in the Tampa Bay area.

Dunedin’s entertainment and arts scenes aren’t to be missed either. Not only does the town host more than 50 special events annually, like the Dunedin Wines the Blues music and wine festival happening on Nov. 12, but it also has the Dunedin Fine Art Center that regularly hosts classes and exhibitions. Be sure to check out its “Our Finest: DFAC Faculty Works” exhibit on display through the end of the year, featuring works by the faculty that showcase their exceptional artistry in the media they teach.

For those wanting to explore the surrounding area during their stay, the Jolley Trolley connects guests to Clearwater Beach, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs. The Clearwater Ferry also runs from downtown Dunedin to Clearwater Beach, helping visitors avoid traffic. However, with so much to experience in Dunedin, guests will never grow bored during their visit. In fact, it’s not uncommon for visitors to inquire about moving to the delightful town after seeing everything it has to offer!

BASEBALL IN DUNEDIN Make plans to attend a spring training game

In 1977, Dunedin scored a home run with Major League Baseball fans when it became the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The only MLB team to have just one spring training home, the Toronto Blue Jays play 14 to 18 games at TD Ballpark every year. The ballpark was renovated in 2020 to not only increase fan capacity from 5,500 to 8,500, but also to add such new attractions as a 360-degree boardwalk around the outfield, an air-conditioned bar along the third base line and an outdoor bar in rightfield. Bathrooms, concessions and suites were renovated, too, and other amenities were added like special group areas.

Spring training games run from late February through the end of March. Visit milb.com/dunedin for the 2023 schedule when it’s released in September, and catch the Dunedin Blue Jays — the Toronto Blue Jays’ Single-A affiliate — play their final 2022 home games at TD Ballpark Sept. 6 through 11.

Stone Crab Season in Florida

This delicious crustacean is an annual treat

Stone crab season in Florida is upon us, the time when throngs of people visit to get their fill of this delicate, sweet crustacean. From October 15th through May 15th, commercial fishermen are permitted to harvest the larger parts of the crab’s claw which must measure at least 2 ¾” to allow for regeneration. Only then can the legal catch appear on restaurant menus.

Not only are stone crabs incredibly delicious but they’re also easy to eat — just add a tub of drawn butter, a bunch of napkins and an icy cold beer, and you’re on your way to seafood heaven. Stone crab’s popularity is so high that three Clearwater Beach restaurants launch the season with festivals. Each entice visitors with live entertainment, games, souvenirs, thirst-quenching beverages and plates heaped with claws that are sold by the pound.

SERENITY IN ST. PETE

Those in search of a little serenity during their trip to St. Pete needn’t look any further than its oldest living museum, Sunken Gardens.

A lush botanical paradise located in the midst of the bustling city, Sunken Gardens is one Florida’s last remaining roadside attractions. Originally a sinkhole and ancient lakebed that was purchased for development in 1911, the 4-acre botanical garden is now home to some of the oldest tropical plants in the region. Meandering paths guide visitors of all ages through a living collection of more than 50,000 tropical plants and flowers, including bromeliads and bougainvilleas. Guests will also pass by cascading waterfalls, koi ponds

and an assortment of wildlife that call the gardens home, such as macaws, kookaburras, tortoises and even a flock of flamingos!

all-new History Center so visitors can learn more about its legacy. Scheduled to open this fall in the attraction’s original 1940 entrance — a building that until recently housed the gardens’ tropical birds at night — the History Center will feature exhibits showcasing Sunken Gardens’ history and its important role during the era of Old Florida roadside attractions. WHAT’S BREWING?

If you are a brewery hopper, historic downtown Sanford is a must-visit

Historic downtown Sanford is home to four distinctive craft breweries, each offering unique brews, delicious food and Southern hospitality. There’s no better time for Allegiant travelers to pick up the Central Florida Ale Trail map and check off the Sanford breweries than during Oktoberfest.

DEVIANT WOLFE BREWING

Indulge in creative suds at this family-owned craft brewery and taproom. Selections range from the more classic Nefarious Nebulas, a traditional hefeweizen wheat beer; to Best Florida Beer 2019 Silver Medal winner I Ain’t Afraid of No Roast, a robust porter with a dark malty body; to the popular Sourmanjaro, a kettle sour blonde ale conditioned on African coffee beans. They also serve guests ciders, kombucha and a selection of wines. deviantwolfebrewing.com

DEES BROTHERS BREWERY

What started as two brothers with a humble home brew project in their garage has now turned into a state-of-the-art brewery in a 100-year-old building located in the historic district of downtown Sanford. Their beer menu offers rotational beers, core beers, special recipes and seasonal. Core beers include Cotswolds Ale, an English amber ale; Dees Bier, a hefeweizen; and Thunder & Lightning, an American IPA. deesbrosbrew.com

SANFORD BREWING COMPANY

This lively brewhouse, taproom and gastropub serves up a large variety of handcrafted beers, meads and ciders complemented by Southern comfort food. With 24 house craft beers on the live tap

menu, you won’t leave thirsty. Selections range from the Drinkin’ Beer, an American pale ale; to the red ale Razzmatazz, a spiced herbed beer; to Route 46, an IPA Imperial/ Double. They also have bottled beers and guest taps. sanfordbrewing.com

WOP’S HOPS BREWING COMPANY

Opened in October 2014, Sanford’s first microbrewery is in the historic Stokes Fish Market building, adorned by a Sanford landmark mural. This veteran owned and operated business is not only family friendly but has a dog friendly fenced beer garden. The live tap lists 18 draft beers including a British-style Honey Nut Brown Ale; Veteran’s Pride, an American pale ale; and Hopsic Waste, a hazy IPA. A ONCE-IN-ALIFETIME ADVENTURE

Dinner guests will enjoy a performance by Twi’lek musical superstar Gaya in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room on the first night of their voyage

One of Walt Disney World Resort’s newest experiences lets “Star Wars” fans step aboard the same luxury vessel where Leia Organa and Han Solo celebrated their honeymoon.

An immersive vacation unlike anything Disney has created before, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser debuted in March as part of Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration. Offering guests of all ages a cruise-like experience on land, the two-night adventure takes place onboard the Halcyon starcruiser, a vessel known for its impeccable service and exotic destinations. Guests will become the heroes of their own “Star Wars” stories during their stay while encountering familiar characters like Rey, Chewbacca and Kylo Ren, relaxing in well-appointed cabins and enjoying out-of-this-world entertainment.

As passengers journey through “a galaxy far, far away,” they can participate in a variety of thrilling onboard activities, like discovering their own connection with the Force while learning about the ancient ways of the lightsaber. Storylines from Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser continue to play out on the second day of the voyage, too, when guests travel to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to experience the land’s two signature attractions: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Both Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Star Wars: Galactic

Starcruiser were designed to integrate from the outset, so actions guests take while at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge may have ramifications when they return to the Halcyon starcruiser.

To further enhance the role-playing vacation experience, guests can visit The Chandrila Collection boutique located onboard the Halcyon starcruiser to shop for a wide assortment of apparel and accessories to wear during their voyage. Headwear can help guests transform into alien species, or passengers can dress like their favorite human heroes by wearing robes, tunics and other authentic fashion apparel that evokes such popular “Star Wars” characters as Padmé Amidala and Leia Organa.

No vacation would be complete without savoring some exquisite fare as well, and Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser boasts a robust and imaginative dining program developed specifically for the unique experience. Of particular note is the “Taste Around the Galaxy” dinner experience that takes place in the vessel’s supper club, the Crown of Corellia Dining Room. Each course hails from a different planet, with highlights that include smoking cheeses and bread reminiscent of the molten planet Mustafar, and beef and seafood native to the Wookiee home world of Kashyyyk.

While reservations for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser are not cheap, the experience is simply priceless for fans who have always dreamt of becoming a part of the “Star Wars” universe. Cabin space is limited, though, so be sure to make your reservation as soon as possible. starwarsgalacticstarcruiser.com

PopStroke brings another can’tmiss experience to Orlando

One of Orlando’s newest attractions is sure to score a hole in one with visitors looking for an affordable activity to enjoy with family or friends.

Not your typical mini golf course, PopStroke opened in Waterford Lakes this past June. Offering guests a one-of-a-kind elevated golf and casual dining experience, the Orlando location marks Florida’s fourth PopStroke, following openings in Port St. Lucie, Fort Myers and Sarasota.

“We are bringing people together across generations to enjoy the game of golf in an affordable, fun and competitive environment,” said Greg Bartoli, who co-owns PopStroke with Tiger Woods’ TGR Ventures.

Suitable for players of all skills even if they’ve never held a club before, PopStroke features two 18-hole putting courses designed by Woods and his professional golf course design team and built entirely with synthetic turfs. Just like golfers would see on a traditional golf course, both courses incorporate fairways, bunkers and

choice — a Bridgestone ball that they get to keep — to play each course and can track their scores and display them on a giant leaderboard by using the virtual scorecard feature on PopStroke’s app.

After a round or two, players can cool off with one of 24 flavors of ice cream or a signature milkshake. A full-service restaurant is also located on site, serving everything from sandwiches and flatbreads to wine and beer. For those still in a competitive frame of mind, PopStroke has an outdoor game area where guests can play cornhole, foosball or table tennis. A playground for kids to enjoy completes the PopStroke experience.

PopStroke is open daily from 9 a.m. until midnight. Guests can putt all day for just $25, with discounts available for groups, seniors, military members and children ages 12 and

A Taste of Jacksonville

Must try dishes for your Jacksonville stay

On the water, downtown and in historic neighborhoods, Jacksonville’s culinary scene offers travelers diverse dishes that are sure to please any palette.

DUCK CONFIT HASH, RESTAURANT ORSAY

Say yes to weekend brunch and French techniques with a Southern flair at this French-American bistro in the Historic Avondale district of Jacksonville. The Duck Confit Hash incorporates the classic country French-style duck confit and roasted fingerling potatoes with fried eggs and a Tabasco-beurre rouge (Tabasco and red wine butter sauce), which is served on the side in

a pitcher. The restaurant boasts a lounge and bar area that offers modern industrial décor, while the Park Street Dining Room exudes an old-world ambiance with an open kitchen. restaurantorsay.com

FISH CAMP SHRIMP & GRITS, NORTH BEACH FISH CAMP

Jacksonville has its own self-guided Mayport Shrimp Passport for those serious about finding the top shrimp dishes in the area. The shrimp are caught locally at the namesake nearby fishing village. One of the 30 stops included in the passport is North Beach Fish Camp in Neptune Beach. Choose the Fish Camp Shrimp & Grits with white wine butter sauce or the Fried Shrimp Basket that comes with Mayport shrimp, fries, hush puppies and coleslaw. Owners Ben and Liza Groshell focus on “Southern fare” and “fresh coastal cuisine” at their four “Fish Camps” and other area restaurants. The Neptune Beach property located at Beaches Town Center offers a casual beachside atmosphere for diners. thenorthbeachfishcamp.com

SEARED FILET MIGNON, MARKER 32

Another restaurant owned and operated by the Groshell family and on the Mayport Shrimp Passport also just happens to be a place to get a really great piece of meat. Served with truffle-parmesan potatoes, haricots verts, a red wine demi-glace and bleu cheese fondue, the Seared Filet Mignon at Marker 32 is a must for meat lovers. No need to miss out on the seafood specialties when you order the Rosemary Grilled Octopus as a starter. It comes with a smoky tomato puree, giant white bean and arugula salad, chorizo, sherry smoked paprika vinaigrette and potato crispies. Ask for a window seat overlooking Palm Cove Marina and the Intracoastal Waterway. marker32.com

SILKIE’S BISCUIT SAMPLER, SILKIE’S CHICKEN AND CHAMPAGNE BAR

Former “Top Chef” contestant Kenny Gilbert is the owner and head chef of what he describes as “an upscale casual restaurant” with counter service. Gilbert opened Silkie’s in November 2020 in Historic Springfield near downtown Jacksonville after starting to make meals of fried chicken and biscuits out of his home during the pandemic quarantine. Silkie’s offers four types of fresh baked drop biscuits: Buttermilk, Jalapeño Cheddar, Truffle Smoked Gouda with Chives and Plantain Ginger with Turmeric. The biscuits are served with different complementing butters, jams and pickles. Silkie’s Biscuit Sampler gets you all four types. You can also pair a biscuit with a choice of chicken styles for tasty sandwiches that can include a combo with one side and beverage. Even Oprah Winfrey, who Gilbert has personally cooked for, is a fan. meetatsilkies.com

SOUTHERN-STYLE BUTTERMILK CHICKEN, THE BREAD & BOARD

The Southern-Style Buttermilk Chicken was “inspired by the best fried chickens we’d

had as kids in the South,” says The Bread & Board chef Dwayne Beliakoff, who is also the co-founder with Jonathan Cobbs of the “funloving sandwich shop and fine dining kitchen.” The chicken breasts are soaked for 24 hours in buttermilk, house hot sauce, fresh garlic and other spices before they are fried. The dish is served either on fresh house baked ciabatta or as an entree board with sweet slaw, homemade dill zucchini pickles, white BBQ sauce and a spicy pimento spread with blue cheese. The Bread & Board has two locations: St. John’s Town Center and downtown Jacksonville at the VyStar Credit Union Headquarters. thebreadandboard.com

Allegiant’s business model is built around the idea that travel should be accessible to everyone. This philosophy is at the heart of our partnership with Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), a Pennsylvania-based organization that breeds, raises, trains and places dogs to assist children and adults with disabilities in their day-to-day lives.

The foundation of our relationship with SSD is built upon two pillars: puppy transfers and airport training.

In order to best guarantee a successful partnership between pooch and person, it is of utmost importance service animals in training (aka adorable puppies) receive the highest quality instruction possible –sometimes involving travel to a different state. This is where Allegiant steps in. The airline donates flights for the animal and an SSD representative. Often, the representative will be dropping off a puppy and flying home with a graduate of the training program. Funds that might have been spent on airfare can be re-directed to

nonstop

another area of need within the nonprofit. The flights serve a dual purpose: travel for the puppy and training.

Just as an airport can present unique challengers for travelers, it is a new and hardto-replicate environment for service animals. This is why we work diligently with our operations team to identify an opportunity for SSD handlers to bring the dogs to the airport for a trial run. The service animals practice going through TSA, boarding the aircraft, and nestling under the airplane seat in front of them while keeping a close eye on their human companion.

After graduation, the dogs, equipped with over 40 cues and skills, are ready to be matched with their person.

Our partnership with SSD makes a lasting impact in the lives of so many people who are now confident to travel by air.

Recognizing Excellence

The airline industry can often be a world of numbers. Flight numbers, miles, airspeed, altitude… all require impeccable precision and dedication. Beyond the seriousness of their day-to-day roles however, Allegiant Team Members’ passion for the numbers can translate into memorable milestones and achievements.

Read on for highlights from Team Members across our network.

Emmy Bartling

Manager of Pricing and Revenue (HQ)

Emmy Bartling’s days are centered around numbers, of course, but she also tracks how many miles she flies with one of the great perks of working at Allegiant — our flight benefits.

“During my 4 years with Allegiant, I have personally flown 35,244 miles, 19,551 miles on G4 routes, and I have been able to treat friends and family to an additional 115,985 miles at free or discounted fares. Combined, we’ve flown over 135k miles — enough to circle the earth more than 5 times!”

“My flight benefits allow me to share the gift of travel with the people I care about. My parents fly for free, and it is rewarding to see my flight benefits get them to all of the great Allegiant destinations.”

Cory Petersman Flight Attendant (CVG)

Every customer really does count. In his 3.5 years with Allegiant, Cory Petersman has celebrated the 100,000 and 200,000 milestones of passengers flown!

“The most exciting part about being a flight attendant, aside from our amazing team and customers, is that whenever I am not working, I have the freedom and flight benefits to go anywhere I please, either by myself, with my parents, or with my travel companion.”

Eli Dunlap

Customer Service Ops Agent (LEX)

When Eli Dunlap started counting how many flights he worked, he would have never guessed the serendipitous moments.

“When I counted my 276th flight, plane number 276 pulled in. Then 3 flights later, number 279, Aircraft 279 pulled in!”

“I’ve been working at the Lexington airport for less than a year and just hit the 500 flight mark. I track my flights worked by taking a photo of each one. Through winter storms and summer heat, each day is different and I love being around airplanes — it’s my favorite part of the job!”

TRAVELER INFORMATION

SAFETY FIRST

Customer safety is Allegiant®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following:

• Location of the nearest emergency exit

• Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed

• Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency

SEAT BELTS

Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.

CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS

Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD

The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.

SMOKING

Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.

These devices should be able to be easily secured in a seat back and not impede emergency access to the aisle.
