A Friendship for the ages ‘RON’S GONE WRONG’ IS SURE TO CONNECT WITH AUDIENCES For the past five years, English filmmaker Sarah Smith (“Arthur Christmas”) has been working hard on Locksmith Animation’s first feature film, “Ron’s Gone Wrong.” The hilarious and heartwarming tale of a socially awkward middle schooler named Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer, “Luca”) and his malfunctioning robot, Ron (voiced by Zach Galifianakis, “The Hangover”), the movie hits theaters on Oct. 22. Sunseeker caught up with Smith, who not only co-founded Locksmith Animation, but also executive produced, wrote and directed “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” to talk about the film and its important message.

ONLY IN THEATERS

Where did the idea for the story come from? The idea first stirred when I watched the Spike Jonze film, “Her.” I just thought we [Smith and her longtime friend Peter Caynham, who co-wrote “Ron’s Gone Wrong” with her] had to make a film like that for kids. I was very aware of my 4-year-old entering the world of iPads, etc., and not having any awareness of the bigger world, agenda or voices behind what she was watching. Pete and I both had the experience of seeing our kids grapple with friendship issues — that feeling we’ve all had as a kid, and adult, that everyone else at the party has friends to talk to except you. That pressure becomes so much more complicated when you add social media. Suddenly, you have this brilliant tool for meeting people you have things in common with, yet you end up worrying even more about being on the outside. So, we wanted to find a way to show, basically, an animated iPad that is sold as “your best friend out of the box,” and the B*Bot was born! What makes “Ron’s Gone Wrong” such a great back-to-school movie for kids to enjoy? One of the key images in the movie is Barney standing on the edge of the schoolyard, staring out at every other kid who appears to him confident and socially sorted (because they all have B*Bots). I think every kid has that experience at some point. But Ron changes all that for Barney because he teaches him he’s worthy of friendship and shows him that all the others are going through the same stuff.

It’s also just a heap of fun. It shows what happens when the socially awkward kid brings this crazy, unafraid, broken bot to school that just wants to rush around making friends with everyone. Without giving away too much, Ron triggers a huge chaotic bit of mad hilarity in the school in which every rule is broken — it’s every kid’s wish fulfilment!

Were you at all awkward in middle school like Barney? If so, would you have loved to have had something like a B*Bot by your side? Wasn’t everyone? It’s a nightmare of selfconsciousness! A B*Bot would have been awesome — a brilliant alternative to having to be funny and charismatic to other kids!

The movie has a great cast. What did the main actors bring to their respective roles? Jack is one of the most versatile voice actors I’ve ever worked with. He gives six different versions of every line, and he can make you cry in a heartbeat. Zach, meanwhile, is a comedy genius who totally got the helpful deadpan of Ron with just a hint of cheek! Ed Helms is a brilliant improviser. He’s so warm as Barney’s dad but also gave us reams of hilarious additional material and alternative lines that make his character so alive and real. Then there was Olivia Colman, dancing up and down to Bulgarian songs. They were such a lovely, generous cast to work with.

If you had one electronic device you’d consider “your best friend out of the box” today, what would it be? Gotta be my iPhone — is it possible to live without them?

What message do you hope viewers take away from the film? Things may be tough today, but you will find friends. And they don’t have to be anything like you, or agree with you or like the same things as you. It will be more fun if they don’t — if they bicker and argue and laugh, like Pete and I do.

Ever since Ernest Hemingway penned such literary classics as “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” while living in Key West, the Florida city has been synonymous with the American author. Not only can visitors enjoy various experiences inspired by the legendary writer — including a tour of Papa’s Pilar Distillery, which was named after Hemingway and his fishing boat — but they can also drink and dine at Hemingway’s favorite hangout, Sloppy Joe’s, which was owned by his good friend and fishing companion, Joe Russell. Once considered one of South Florida’s best-kept secrets, word is getting out about Fort Lauderdale’s thriving art scene. The city is home to several notable galleries and museums, including what many consider to be its premier art museum: NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Located in downtown Fort Lauderdale’s vibrant Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, NSU Art Museum was founded in 1958 and became a part of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 2008. The 83,000-square-foot building the museum is currently housed in opened in 1986 and was designed by renowned architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Inside the modern architectural landmark lies more than 25,000 square feet of exhibition space, as well as a 256seat auditorium, gift shop and café.

Participants have just 24 hours from Friday until Sunday to sculpt their pieces, which can look like they were carved out of marble due to the beauty and cleanliness of the sand. In addition to creating a large community-sponsored sculpture that’ll be the centerpiece of the festival, the master sculptors will build eight solo sculptures and eight team sculptures in hopes of winning some prize money. A panel of judges will then announce the winners on Sunday after-

While the master sand sculpting competition may be The Siesta Key Crystal Classic’s biggest draw, the event also features live music, more than 70 retail vendors, six food trailers and a Barefoot Beach Bar pop-up party tent that has food, music and a full bar. Additionally, guests can take complimentary sand sculpting lessons with the master sculptors, watch them compete in a Quick Sand speed competition and register to show off their own sand sculpting skills at the Amateur Competition. The Siesta Key Crystal Classic takes place each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Saturday, so that guests can see the sculptures under colored lights at night. Celebrating its 18th anniversary on Sept. 27, local dining favorite Farlow’s on the Water is giving guests in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach even more to savor.

Known for its Caribbean cuisine with a Southern twist, the relaxed waterfront restaurant underwent some permanent changes last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the changes that got the most positive feedback from guests was deciding to serve the restaurant’s full lunch and dinner menus on its boardwalk overlooking Ainger Creek. Visitors can now enjoy signature dishes like the tasty St. Croix Cranberry Chicken Salad while watching fish and the occasional manatee swim by. With more people wanting to dine outdoors, Farlow’s also expanded its patio seating. Several enhancements were made to keep diners comfortable outside throughout the year, including adding misting fans and umbrellas for shade during the summer months and outdoor heaters when the weather gets cool. For the first time ever, Farlow’s also began taking reservations by phone and processing orders online. Its delivery and to-go options became so popular, the restaurant now has its own delivery vehicle and designated curbside pickup parking spots. Farlow’s installed clear acrylic panels between each of its 12 indoor booths, too, and introduced

several new menu items, including a Pork Stuffed Cornbread appetizer. Pickleball may have gotten its start on Bainbridge Island in 1965, but today, the game is one of the fastest growing sports in America — especially in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach. According to the USA Pickleball Association, pickleball was initially created by congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell to keep their families entertained when they couldn’t find a full set of rackets to play badminton with one summer day. Pritchard and Bell decided to improvise with what they had, and their families played on Pritchard’s badminton court with ping pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball instead. Over the weekend, players realized that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface, so the net was lowered from 60 inches (badminton height) to 36 inches. The following weekend — with the help of Barney McCallum, who was introduced to the game at Pritchard’s home — rules were created and pickleball was born. While there has been some debate as to how the game got its name — Pritchard’s wife claimed she called the game pickleball because the combination of different sports reminded her of “the pickle boat in

CAFÉ AMELIE Brunch is such a big deal at Café Amelie that it’s served Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Even with so much time devoted to it, a brunch reservation is still needed or some extra time to wait in line for an open table. While there’s no bad seat in the house, a spot in the courtyard where fountains, shade trees, potted plants and lights strung overhead lend the space a charming, Southern feel.

Allegiant returns to making dreams come true

Allegiant is built around the idea that travel should be accessible to everyone. That philosophy is at the heart of our national partnership with Make-A-Wish®, the nonprofit organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children facing critical illnesses. Wishes not only help hope and joy to shine through the toughest of circumstances, but can also make a real difference in improving health outcomes for many children. About 77 percent of those wishes involve travel, and since 2012 Allegiant has provided free, nonstop flights for nearly 2,000 wish kids and their families to reach dream destinations across the country — from Florida and California theme parks to sports events, concerts and celebrations in New York and Las Vegas. We’ve also been honored to help design and host special wishes, including a visit to Allegiant’s west coast training center, where prospective pilot Eric flew a full-motion professional flight simulator, and where honorary flight attendant, 5 year-old SJ, handed out snacks to his fellow passengers during his wish trip to Orlando. When the pandemic delayed the fulfillment of wishes involving air travel, Allegiant team members stepped in to help fill the void. Pilots and flight attendants delivered messages of hope and gifts of encouragement to the homes of wish kids in Las Vegas. Administrative staff helped with a functional and beautiful bedroom makeover for 9 year-old wish kid Annay. And, across the country, hundreds

of team members participated in “virtual” walks and fundraisers during this most unusual year. This fall, our team will once again welcome wish kids on board Allegiant flights as they resume travel to fulfill their wishes. You, too, can help support MakeA-Wish and their important mission during your flight. This type of spirit and teamwork will pull us through these difficult days.” “Several of my coworkers and I had the recent pleasure of traveling on a flight that Captain Acoba (LAS) was in

Before the main cabin door was closed, Captain Acoba came out of the flight deck and introduced himself from the forward galley and thanked everyone for coming out and flying.” “While flying home from vacation, Karl (Line MX Inspector, SFB) heard a gate announcement that the flight would be delayed due to a maintenance problem.
