TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL RETURNS TO THE SUNSHINE STATE FOR SPRING TRAINING By H. Wadowski
T
here’s no better place for baseball fans to be flying to this February and March than Florida. That’s when some of Major League Baseball’s finest will once again report to the Sunshine State for spring training. An annual tradition for many baseball enthusiasts, more than 26 million fans have attended a spring training baseball game in the state of Florida since the year 2000. In fact, last year during the 35-day 2016 Florida Grapefruit League spring training season, each of the 215 games had approximately 7,096 fans in attendance—the first time the average attendance topped 7,000 people in a single season!
Home to 13 spring training ballparks, Florida has a rich history of hosting spring training games. Five Florida communities— Bradenton, Clearwater, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Lakeland—have actually hosted spring training since the 1920s! In total, 15 teams call Florida their spring training home, four of which will be hosting games this season in newly renovated or new stadiums. Lakeland’s Joker Marchant Stadium will debut new renovations for the Detroit Tigers; West Palm Beach will welcome The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, a two-team complex for the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals; and Tampa’s Steinbrenner Field will unveil several new ballpark enhancements for the New York Yankees. Arguably Major League Baseball’s most popular team, the New York Yankees attract thousands of fans every year to Steinbrenner Field. This year’s spring training schedule runs from Feb. 24 to March 30, with the first home game scheduled for Feb. 24 against the Philadelphia Phillies. Even though Steinbrenner Field is one of Florida Grapefruit League’s bigger ballparks, with a capacity of 11,076 people, tickets go fast, so fans are encouraged to buy them as soon as possible.
The Tampa Bay Rays have made Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte their home since 2009 16
FLORIDA
The Yankees’ longtime rival, the Boston Red Sox, also call Florida their spring training home, playing at Fort Myers’ JetBlue Park. One of Florida Grapefruit League’s newer—and larger—ballparks, JetBlue Park opened in 2012

and can accommodate 11,000 fans. The Red Sox will play a total of 17 spring training games there this season, starting on Feb. 24, when the team hosts the New York Mets and ending on March 30 when they play the Washington Nationals. Fort Myers is the spring training home of the Minnesota Twins as well, who play at Hammond Stadium at CenturyLink Sports Complex. The stadium, which was renovated in 2015, can hold 8,730 guests, with each game averaging just under 7,000 fans in attendance. The Twins’ spring training schedule kicks off at home on Feb. 24 against the Tampa Bay Rays, with their final home game of the season also scheduled against the Rays on March 28. The Tampa Bay Rays play all of their home games at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte. The team’s spring training ballpark since 2009, the stadium can accommodate 6,823 fans, with more than 5,000 fixed seats and general admission areas that can accommodate more than 1,000 additional people. The Rays’ first home game this season is scheduled for Feb. 25 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. One of the oldest teams to hold spring training in Florida, the Pittsburgh Pirates play their home games at McKechnie Field in Bradenton. Renovated in 2013, the stadium can accommodate 8,500 fans, with the first home game of the season scheduled for Feb. 25 against the Baltimore Orioles. Those visiting Sarasota can catch the Baltimore Orioles playing at their spring training home, Ed Smith Stadium, which was renovated in 2011 and can accommodate 7,500 people. The Orioles’ first home game is scheduled against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Feb. 26, with their final game of the season scheduled at home on March 30 against the Detroit Tigers.
Fort Myers' JetBlue Park is the spring training home for the Boston Red Sox
Champion Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee always scores a home run with Atlanta Braves fans, as it can accommodate 9,500 people for each home game. The Braves’ spring training season begins at home on Feb. 25 against the Toronto Blue Jays and concludes at home on March 29 against the New York Mets. ulfport is the perfect example of a hidden gem. A short 15-minute drive inland from its famous neighbor, St. Pete Beach, Gulfport is a tiny 2.8-mile hamlet. This scenic community on Boca Ciega Bay’s waterfront is considered by many to be a modern day throwback to the Florida Cracker days when life was simple, towns had a sense of togetherness and people never moved away. This is Gulfport today, home to “Old Florida” charm, where you won’t find a parking meter anywhere and friendly greetings from residents and merchants alike are the norm.
O’Maddy’s is a popular local favorite
The Gulfport New Year’s Eve Gala is a fancy affair
You’ll discover lots to see and do along Gulfport’s bustling, historic, waterfront village. A colorfest of brightly painted buildings entice you to browse, dine and explore funky boutiques, contemporary galleries and locally owned shops. Be sure to check out eclectic Gulfport Beach Bazaar, home to over 20 unique vendors. A small strip of beach and the 470-foot Williams Pier overlook scenic bay views, and the historic Gulfport Casino, now regularly used for public dances and special events, makes for an interesting photo op. For food and drink, the choices are many—and good. Try Stella’s if you love big breakfasts (and fried green tomatoes). O’Maddy’s Bar and Grille is home to a come-as-you-are attitude, an open-air bar overlooking the waterfront and really awesome pub grub, including local favorites such as Michael’s Mussels and Ashley’s Lobster BLT. Gulfport is seen as a jaunt for day-trippers for the most part, although there are several bed and breakfast lodgings. One particular beauty is The Historic Peninsula Inn, where owner Veronica Champion’s 1905 charmer has been transformed into 12 beautiful suites and rooms (do ask about the reported ghost). The comfy veranda beckons you to relax with sweet tea before dining on “Southern cuisine with a modern twist” at on-site Isabelle’s Restaurant. Live music entertains guests in the bar Tuesday to Saturday. Gulfport is known for its recurring and special events. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Gulfport Art Walk blazes a path through its cultural side, and the weekly Tuesday Fresh Market entices with produce, local honeys, gourmet foodstuffs and specialty handcrafts. The funky Gecko Fest is a legendary feast of fun held each September right before Labor Day. The merriment includes a parade, street performers, costume contests plus the quirky Gecko Ball and pub crawl.

I just wanted to say that traveling with you has been wonderful for my family. If it wasn’t for your airline, we wouldn’t be able to travel, so thank you and all of your staff, they have just been wonderful as well.

My husband and I flew you for the first time in April from Cincinnati to Tampa / St. Pete. We were initially nervous about flying a lower cost carrier as we have historically used Delta for most all of our trips. We had a great experience and thought the flight attendants were wonderful!

Calmly and professionally she addressed my issue and assured me that she could correct the error, which she did! The customer service she provided was outstanding and greatly appreciated. Thank you!

CLEARWATER DOLPHIN TRAIL A WELCOMING AND COLORFUL POD By Judy Jauregui and Auriyon Butler
E
xploring the St. Pete/Clearwater area, you may notice a large number of decorative dolphins. This colorful tradition was started in 2012 by the Clearwater Regional Chamber, along with support from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the City of Clearwater, and began with just 50 six-foot tall fiberglass bottlenose dolphins. Each one individually designed by local artists using elements such as glass, ceramic, fiber art and decoupage, the colorful pod has now grown to over 200! Check out the spots below to view some of the collection’s most impressive pieces. You can see where all of the dolphins are located at visitstpeteclearwater.com. HYATT REGENCY CLEARWATER Sandee C. ALLEGIANT AND MAKE-A-WISH® GRANTING THE WISHES OF CHILDREN FOR OVER FOUR YEARS By Brandon Meyers
O
n Aug. 25, 2012, Allegiant provided travel for its first Make-AWish® Wish Kid. Since then, over 600 Wish Kids have flown on Allegiant to their wish destinations, over $400,000 in cash has been donated directly by Allegiant and over $270,000 has been donated by passengers through purchases of the Wingz Kids Snack Pack. To date, Allegiant has flown over 600 Wish Kids to their wish destinations including Serena, age 17, who on July 6, 2015, was Allegiant’s 300th wish kid. Serena flew to Hawaii for her wish to learn how to surf. In April 2016, Allegiant was proud to announce the expansion of its partnership with Make-A-Wish by donating office space to Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. The office space will be used as the Make-A-Wish chapter’s new headquarters, and will be located on Allegiant’s campus. The space will also be used for volunteer training, meetings and a place of support for families of children receiving wishes.
joy. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true has positive impacts on the health of children. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illness, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Headquartered in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 28,000 volunteers, Make-AWish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 35 minutes. It has granted more than 270,000 wishes since its inception in 1980; more than 14,800 in 2015 alone. Visit MakeA-Wish at wish.org to learn more. To learn how you can help make travel wishes come true, visit allegiant.com/maw.
Allegiant also sponsored nine Make-A-Wish fundraising events around the country, including the annual Southern Nevada Walk for Wishes event held in Allegiant’s hometown of Las Vegas. TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR
VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel. SMOKING Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
