Happy 101st

Miriam Esther Schwartz

Reaching the remarkable milestone of a century is a momentous occasion, and brothers; Wayne and Les Schwartz are blessed to announce the 101st birthday of their mother, Miriam Esther Schwartz.

Her journey through life has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by decades of living in the vibrant communities of Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, and Hallandale. We delve into the story of a woman who has witnessed the transformation of a city and embraced the joys of family, community service, and a love for classic music.

Miriam’s connection to the sun-kissed shores of Miami Beach runs deep for over 75 years. She first discovered the allure of this coastal paradise in 1948 when she started vacationing here with her parents. Over the years, she witnessed the evolving landscape of Miami Beach as it transitioned into an internationally acclaimed destination. As Miami Beach changed, so did her life, and her resilience in adapting to these shifts is nothing short of inspiring. Miami Beach has been her permanent home since 1965.

Both of her sons attended Miami Beach High School and graduated the University of Florida.

With a family, that extended beyond her sons, Miriam has also had the joy of

three stepdaughters. Her family has grown to nine grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren.

Her goals in these late years of life have been to outlive her mother who lived to 101, two months and 10 days -which she has done- and her current goal is to live long enough for the birth of her first great great grandchild from her oldest granddaughter, timed for June 2025.

Miriam worked as a bookkeeper for two independent small businesses on Miami Beach for over 35 years. Her work ethic then transitioned to community service and volunteering. Miriam’s talents also extended to knitting and crafting beautiful Afghan blankets. These handmade creations have become cherished heirlooms for her family.

Miriam’s love for Asian cuisine and appreciation for classical music enriched her life in countless ways. She savored trying different Asian dishes and reveled in the melodies of classical composers.

One of the greatest gifts she ever received was a full series of CDs featuring the works of classical composers.

As we celebrate Miriam Esther Schwartz’s 101st birthday, we honor not only her longevity, but a life worth living. Happy 101st birthday, Miriam Esther Schwartz.

Following Old Footsteps

World Traveler

Reconstructs Family’s Fascinating History

The thrill of a new place fades quickly for Caroline Topperman when she moves from Vancouver to Poland in 2013. As she delves into her family’s history, tracing their migration through pre-WWII Poland, Afghanistan, Soviet Russia and beyond, she discovers that the layers of their complex experiences mirror some of what she felt as she adapted to life in a new country. How does one balance honoring both one’s origins and new surroundings?

Coaxing memories from photographs and relying on voices from the past to guide her in her search for identity and belonging, Topperman takes an emotional and fascinating journey as she explores where personal history intersects with global events to shape her family’s identity. The result is her new book, Your Roots Cast a Shadow: One Family’s Search Across History for Belonging.

“While writing Your Roots Cast a Shadow, I relied upon old letters and a book written by my grandfather,” Topperman said. “During one of my deep dives, I found that his book is referenced atThe Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.”

From the bustling markets of Baghdad to the quiet streets of Stockholm, Topperman navigates the murky waters of history as she toggles between present and past, investigating the relationship between migration, politics, identity and home. Her family stories bring history into the present as her paternal grandmother becomes the first woman allowed to buy groceries at her local Afghan market while her husband is tasked with building the road from Kabul to Jalalabad. Topperman’s Jewish grandfather, a rising star in the Communist Party, flees Poland at the start of WWII one step ahead of the Nazis, returning later only to be rejected by the Party for his Jewish faith. Topperman herself struggles with new cultural expectations and reconciling with estranged relatives.

A study in social acceptance, Topperman contends with what one can learn about an adopted culture while trying to retain the familiar, the challenges of learning new languages and traditions even as she examines the responsibilities of migrants to their new culture, as well as

A Showcase of Skill and Community Spirit: The Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo

Everyday heroes often operate in the background, unnoticed yet indispensable. Such is the case with bus operators, professionals whose expertise and commitment ensure the seamless movement of a bustling community. But once a year, they step into the spotlight for an event that celebrates their skills, precision, and dedication: the Broward County Transit 2025 BusSafetyRoadeo.

This year, for the first time, the Roadeo leaves the closed gates of its traditional venue at the Copans Garage and moves to the open spaces of the Amerant Bank Arena Park and Ride Lot at Gate 7 Scheduled for Sunday, February 2, 2025, this historic shift transforms the competition into a public display, inviting families, transit enthusiasts, and curious residents to witness firsthand the incredible talents of BCT’s finest bus operators.

The thrill begins as 11 of BCT’s most skilled operators navigate an intricate obstacle course, their movements precise and their focus unwavering. Each turn of the wheel and every maneuver showcase the expertise needed to guide massive buses through Broward County’s busy streets, a task they perform daily with unmatched professionalism.

The 2025 competition welcomes “Flash” Jacquan, the 2024 Broward County Roadeo winner and standout participant. In 2023, he secured the Rookie of the Year title at the state level, ranking seventh out of 19 skilled competitors—a testament to his expertise and dedication. Though Jacquan isn’t competing this year, his presence exemplifies the camaraderie and shared passion that makes the Roadeo special. But this isn’t just a test of skill; it’s a celebration for the entire com-

munity. The Roadeo has evolved into a family-friendly festival with food trucks offering diverse cuisines, family-friendly games and activities, giveaways, and a festive atmosphere. With live DJ and radio broadcasts, the day promises memorable entertainment for all ages.

At the heart of the event is a deeper message: public transit’s critical role in connecting people to jobs and essential services. Events like the Roadeo offer a glimpse into the professionalism and dedication behind each bus ride, reminding us of the often-overlooked individuals who keep Broward County moving.

“This year’s Roadeo is a unique opportunity to bring our community closer to the transit system,” said Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO/General Manager of Broward County Transit. “It’s a celebration not just of skill but of the community

connection that underlines Broward CountyTransit.”

The day culminates with an award ceremony at 12:30 PM, honoring the operators who have excelled in the competition. Beyond the trophies, the winners earn the privilege of representing Broward County Transit at the 2025 Florida Triple Crown Roadeo in Gainesville later this month. If they win at the State level, they will have the distinct honor of representing BCT at the International Bus Roadeo in Austin,TX in April.

So, mark your calendars, grab your loved ones, and head to the Amerant Bank Arena on Sunday, February 2, 2025, beginning at 8:30 AM for an unforgettable day of fun, community, and awe-inspiring skill. For more details, visit Broward.org/BCT or call Customer Service at 954-357-8400.

You Snore? Are You Always Tired?

Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!

It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea

What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?

When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.

Can This Condition Be Treated? How?

There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

Miami New Drama Announces A World Premiere

Bad Dog, A Bold & Hilarious New Play Exploring Art, Identity, and Power

Miami New Drama is thrilled to announce the world premiere of Bad Dog, a provocative play written by Harley Elias and directed by Miami New Drama’s Artistic Director, Michel Hausmann. The production will open at the historic Colony Theatre on January 23rd, 2025, offering audiences a darkly comedic look at the high-stakes contemporary art world.

Bad Dog unfolds in a Miami art gallery, where a performance artist embarks on a bizarre and boundarypushing project: living as a dog for an entire month. As the artist’s intentions emerge, the outrageous experiment sparks chaos, exposing deadly workplace betrayals, a gallerina uprising, sharp commentary on identity politics in art, and the levels at which a Miami gallerist would go to achieve Art Basel Banana notoriety.

At the heart of Bad Dog is the artist David, played by Caleb Scott, whose audacious performance piece transforms him into “Buddy,” a dog who takes up residency in the gallery. For a month, Buddy bites visitors, sleeps, eats, and undergoes training and domestication—all in full view of the public. The play’s provocative nature intentionally unsettles audiences as it explores the line between art and absurdity, forcing us to confront our discomfort, judgments, and the nature of performance itself.

“Harley Elias is nothing short of a genius,” says Michel

Hausmann, Artistic Director. “This play is wildly entertaining and deeply thought-provoking, a perfect fit for our mission of creating socially impactful theater that resonates with our community.”

Playwright Harley Elias adds, “I’m fascinated by how we use art to question identity, power, and truth. With Bad Dog, I wanted to craft a story as absurd and hilarious as it is uncomfortably human.”

Set against the backdrop of a Miami art gallery, each actor masterfully brings their character to life. Liba Vaynberg shines as the poised and enigmatic Gallerina, embodying the allure and sophistication of the gallery’s public face. Mia Matthews portrays the Gallerist with gravitas, perfectly capturing the air of an established gallery owner whose every gesture suggests a life immersed in art and commerce. Caleb Scott delivers a riveting performance as David, an artist who transforms himself into “Buddy,” offering a thought-provoking and visceral portrayal of his final, provocative performance art piece. Meanwhile, Krystal Millie Valdes breathes urgency and ambition into the role of the Assistant, skillfully depicting a young woman eager to escape the grunt work of carrying boxes and seize her shot at success, no matter the cost. Together, the cast creates a dynamic interplay of ambition, creativity, and the peculiarities of the art world.
