Chronic Disease

Epidemic

No matter where you stand politically, the return of Donald Trump to the White House presents a chance to reshape America’s approach to health and nutrition. His administration will have the opportunity to overhaul outdated federal dietary guidelines, which lack scientific rigor and have long contributed to our chronic disease epidemic.

Every five years since 1980, the government has published its Dietary Guidelines for Americans, advising people to get 52 percent to 56 percent of their calories from grains and other carbohydrate-rich foods, while largely avoiding the natural saturated fats found in whole milk, butter, and meat.

Grain mixed with skim milk is a well-known formula for fattening pigs — and it turns out that it fattens humans, too. In 23 states, the adult obesity rate now meets or exceeds 35 percent.

It’s not just our collective waistlines that have expanded.

Broward County Transit Bus Operator Recognized

Visually Impaired Resident Across Busy Intersection

In the bustling rhythm of Broward County, where nearly two million residents and visitors weave through their daily routines, extraordinary moments often unfold quietly, unnoticed by the masses. These moments, however, have the power to inspire and remind us of the incredible people who make our community thrive.

One such moment happened at one of Broward’s busiest intersections, Flamingo Avenue and Pines Boulevard—a place where traffic seldom pauses. On what seemed like an ordinary day, Jean Marcelin, a three-year Broward County Transit (BCT) bus operator, turned it into something extraordinary.

While completing his bus route, Marcelin noticed a visually impaired gentleman struggling to navigate the chaotic eight lane intersection. Recognizing the man’s difficulty, Marcelin didn’t hesitate. He stopped his bus, stepped out, and guided the man safely across the bustling roadway to the correct bus stop, ensuring his safety and comfort.

This act of kindness didn’t just impact the passenger; it caught the attention of a Broward County resident who witnessed the entire scene. The community rallied to commend Marcelin for his selfless action.

“I just thought about what I’d want someone to do for me,” Marcelin later shared. “There’s always an opportunity to help people.”

that guide public service professionals like him. More than just a bus operator, Marcelin embodies the compassion and commitment that form the heart of Broward County Transit.

This moment, amplified by the community’s appreciation recently led to Marcelin receiving the prestigious County Administrator’s Shining Star Award. The award honors his exceptional service and the lasting impact he’s made on the community.

Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO/ General Manager of Broward County Transit, praised Marcelin:

“Jean represents the very best of what it means to be a transit professional. His empathy, quick thinking, and dedication to our community are inspiring. He’s a shining example of how one small act can leave a lasting impact.”

Marcelin’s story of resilience adds even more depth to his character. Growing up in one of Miami’s toughest neighborhoods, he faced the unimaginable loss of both parents at a young age. Despite these challenges, Marcelin found his way forward, eventually becoming a trusted and respected BCT bus operator.

His journey is chronicled in his book, The Good Guy, where he shares his experiences navigating loss, independence, and the complexities of life. It’s a story that mirrors his daily work—connecting with people, helping them find their way, and always striving to do good.

A Community Hero Jean Marcelin’s story is a powerful reminder that the people behind the wheel of Broward County Transit are much more than drivers; they are connec-

Rates of nearly every chronic disease have soared in recent decades. More than half of adults have Diabetes or Prediabetes. Up to 10 percent of kids suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Americans aren’t growing fatter and sicker in spite of the government’s dietary guidelines but because of them. Now is the time to reverse this trajectory.

For more than a decade now, the most reputable scientific studies have shown that the government’s dietary advice does not prevent or reduce obesity, Cancer or other diseases. People who eat diets lower in carbohydrates consistently achieve greater weight loss and have bet-

Ultra-low-carb or “ketogenic” diets have even been shown to completely reverse Type 2 Diabetes without costly medications or patented meal replacement formulas. A large clinical trial found that nearly 56 percent of people with Type 2 Diabetes who adopted a ketogenic diet saw a reversal of the disease within 10 weeks while decreasing their medications.

Despite the evidence, the government’s dietary guidelines are stuck in 1980, having barely changed since the old “food pyramid.”

Their reward for following the official advice? Americans are sicker than ever. The current guidelines have likely spawned a chronic disease crisis that has caused millions of premature deaths and accounts for the vast majority of America’s $4.5 trillion annual healthcare spending.

As president, Trump should order the U.S. Department of Agriculture to implement recommendations made in a 2017 National Academies of Sciences report. This report warned that the guidelines process used a methodology that “lacks rigor” and listed 11 concrete steps to

During the last revision of the guidelines, the committee ignored about 20 review papers concluding that there is little or no reliable evidence for advising people to limit their saturated fat intake. The guidelines must also add an option for the roughly two-thirds of Americans with at least one chronic disease.

Do You Snore? Are You Always Tired?

Snoring Is No Laughing

Matter!

It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea

What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?

When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.

Can This Condition Be Treated? How?

There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy.

This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

An Autonomous World Starts with a Robotic Chanukah

Chanukah is known for the miracle of the Menorah that took place in the Temple, but the holiday was called Chanukah from the word Chanukat Habayit (lit Dedication of House), because it was the rededication of the Temple, after being occupied by the Greeks. Chanukah also comes from the word Chinuch, which means education. During this holiday we are supposed to gather our families together and educate our children and ourselves, about the miracles done for us on a constant basis. Together with recalling the original Chanukah miracles, we remind our families about the personal family stories that we each have, that brought us to where we are today. Chanukah (sometimes spelled Hanukkah or Hanuka), which is also known as the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Wednesday, Dec 25, 2024, and concludes 8 days later, on the evening of Thursday, Jan 2, 2025. It recalls the victory of a militarily weak Jewish people who defeated the Syrian Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and prohibit religious freedom. They also desecrated and defiled the Temple and the oils prepared for the lighting of the menorah, which was part of the daily service. Upon recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn only one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight. In commemoration, Jews celebrate Chanukah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah (the 9th branch is to help light the other 8). Today, people of all faiths consider this holiday a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness. Additional information about the holiday is available at ChabadChayil.org/Holidays.

This year’s menorah lighting is done with the recognition of the crucial need for a message of hope during a time that is so difficult for the people in Israel. The menorah serves as a symbol of light and hope for us today amidst the world’s craziness, as it did for generations before us. The flames of the menorah shine out into the night, reminding us that even when confronted with much darkness, a tiny light can dispel it all. Each additional act of goodness and kindness, fills that corner of the world with light, slowly catching on and spreading like wildfire. One act of goodness and kindness can make all the difference.

Uniquely, at the core of Chanuka’s observance is sharing the light with others who may not be experiencing it. What better time or place to celebrate, than at this year’s 21st annual Street Fair celebration in Highland Lakes! This year’s theme will be Robotic Chanukah, featuring the world-renowned Sophia the Robot, Robodog and several other robot celebrities! The free family-friendly event will this year take place on Sunday, Dec 29, 2024/5785 beginning at 3:30 with pony

The idea behind a Robotic Chanukah is, as the world gets ready for Moshiach, where we will all be busy with studying Torah and doing Mitzvahs, we will have robots helping us with our regular daily mundane tasks. Since Chanukah comes from the word Chinuch (education), we need to educate ourselves and prepare ourselves for an autonomous world, so that we can stay focused on what really matters!

Sophia is the most realistic humanoid robot capable of displaying humanlike expressions and interacting with people.

She’s the world’s first robot to hold a passport and an Ambassador for the United Nations (whatever that’s worth). This will be Sophias first official Chanukah Celebration and her first time lighting a Menorah!

Festive Fumbles: 3,000 Women Identify the

Worst Christmas Gifts They Have Received

Finding the perfect Christmas gift for the woman in your life can be a bit of a minefield; yes, you theoretically should know her well enough by now to be wise to her loves and hates, but it seems that time after time, men just get it a bit (or a lot) wrong. There’s the supposedly sexy underwear that’s either too big or too small (both are insulting), the item of clothing that is definitely not in her preferred color or style, the perfume set that is definitely not her favorite fragrance, or the recipe book that suggests she should spend more time in the kitchen — looking after him. Sometimes men get it so wrong that their choice of gift could do more than annoy the women they love; it could even bring about the end of their relationship!

Conducting a survey of 3,000 respondents, DatingAdvice wanted to find out which presents Florida women have received that would cause them to call time on their relationship. Men of Florida, if you want to avoid being single over Christmas, we suggest you read this carefully…

#1 Cleaning Supplies or a Vacuum Cleaner Let’s face it, no woman wants to be made to feel as if she’s no more than a mere maid, whose only job it is to clean up around her man. We’re not in the 1950s anymore, Toto!

#2 A Diet Book or Weight Loss Program Membership

This gift is particularly thoughtless given that Christmas is one of the times of year that people usually eat the most, splurging on turkey or ham, stuffing,

mashed potatoes, gravy, cornbread, cookies, the works! No one wants to receive a gift that makes them think their partner believes they’ve turned into a tubby butterball, especially after eating one.

#3 Personal Hygiene Products

Ah, that slight whiff of suggesting you might have… a slight whiff about you. Anything from mouthwash to deodorant basically says, ‘You stink.’

#4 Last-Minute “Panic Gifts” from Drugstores

Nothing says ‘I literally gave this no thought’ like a generic ‘present’ from the likes of Walgreens or CVS. From a random perfume gift set to a cheap, ownbrand lipstick, these should be avoided at all costs.

#5 Unrequested Self-Help books

Woooo boy, this is a screaming no-no, for it suggests that you think something is seriously wrong with your lady love. Yes, many men like to think that they can offer a practical solution to any problem, but this, my friends, is not the way to do it. #7 A Book On Improving Social Skills

Any book on life skills, or social etiquette could be seen as a negative critique on someone, even if you have the best intentions. There is no quicker way to get on someone’s bad side than by gifting a book that could potentially be seen as a criticism of their personality or decision making.

#8 Fitness Equipment Or Gym Membership

Many of us have weight loss goals set for our New Year’s resolution or plan on taking out a gym membership come 2025 - while it may seem like a good idea to cover the cost of this for someone you love it could also be seen as a big insult. To that end, its best to steer clear of any fitness related gifts, such as at home gym equipment, gym clothes, or health supplements unless someone specifically requests these.

The survey also had some other interesting findings; the main thing that partners said was the hardest part about buying gifts for women was: ‘She already has everything’ (28%) — patently not true, just ask her for ideas if you’re stuck! Another 23% lamely said, ‘I have no idea what she likes’ — er, hello, you’re dating her — if you don’t know by now, you never will. Clearly, you’re just not paying

attention to her. Another 17% said both ‘She drops hints I can never pick up on’ (sigh) and ‘She’s impossible to shop for,’ (really!?) while some scrooges out there (16%) claimed ‘She has expensive taste.’

The most last-minute gift women have ever received was a gift card with the amount written in pen (42%). Nearly a quarter (22%) said they received a supposedly ‘thoughtful’ IOU, which essentially just says the man couldn’t be bothered. Even worse, 19% gave something they got at the gas station, and most pathetic of all, 17% got a random item from their own closet!

Women can be very forgiving, however, and over a third (38%) said they would put the situation behind them if they got an amazing, surprise, follow-up gift (unlikely, if DatingAdvice’s survey is anything to go by). Tying at 31% was a heartfelt apology (okay, plenty of groveling) and a romantic dinner or similarly sweet gesture.

It’s not like women expect something expensive and unattainable, either; if their partner had to buy a gift on a budget, 28% said they would appreciate something homemade and thoughtful, while 25% would be over the moon with a sincere love letter. Another 20% would love a cozy blanket or candles for relaxing, 15% would be very happy with a subscription for a small indulgence, like coffee or chocolates, and 13% would just love a simple but meaningful piece of jewelry.

Finally, if their partner could have one gift-free Christmas, what they would like to do instead would be spending the entire day together with no distractions (31%), followed by planning a romantic getaway (28%) or cooking an amazing holiday meal (26%). Another 15% said they would want him to write them a

opportunity to travel alongside thirty-two participants to support the Jewish people of Cuba. Jewish Federation of Miami sponsored the trip. At first, I had mixed emotions about going but after considering we may not ever have the chance to go in the future, it was to show solidarity with our fellow Jews living under Communist Dictatorship that we attended. The four-day trip to Havana made a profound impact on me in a way I would never have imagined.

On my return home, I deliberated whether I would write about the trip. Many of my friends shared their concerns about me becoming a target since I am an elected official and now have even stronger views on the Cuban Communist government. I also had mixed emotions on how my Cuban friends would view my trip. I will share that I now have an even deeper understanding and respect of the opposition I have heard against entering business with Cuba. I understand the pain and suffering many endured leaving the country they loved and more importantly their families. I did not want to open wounds or have individuals judge my allegiance to fight for a free Cuba.

If this article is offensive or painful I apologize. I almost did not write it at all until I was encouraged by the owner of Padrino’s. The irony of just returning from Cuba to attend the last ribbon cutting ceremony of the year at Hallandale Beach’s landmark Padrino’s Cuban Restaurant seemed like fate. Meeting the entire family and hearing their history

My Reflection Of My Trip To Cuba

Cuba for tourism. For a brief while under the Obama Administration Cuba was open, in 2015 reopened the Embassy. Our guide shared with us that during the time the embassy was reopened there was an excitement Americans would finally be able to visit and more importantly their Cuban family members and friends. Since the trade embargos have been strengthened and Trump in his first term made them stronger due to Terrorism and their relations with Iran and North Korea.

Just this week there were protests in Cuba blaming their economic conditions on the U.S. sanctions that were put in place in the 1960’s. Many of their Communist counterparts have reduced their exports to Cuba due to their own economic situations. Venezuela has stopped shipping much needed oil to Cuba impacting their energy plants. The propaganda I have now seen firsthand. In reports of the incident the million plus protesters reported by Cuba could not be confirmed. I have been to that location and 1,000 to 2,000 people could fit in that area. During the days up to our trip there was a major failure of the main power plant in Havana. We were assuring that “tourism” is one of the main income producing sectors for the country and all the areas we would be going to were up and running. We boarded our plane and left at 9:30 on the one-hour flight. Looking out the window of the plane I thought how true the statement “going back in time,” was so true. The landing strip was safe

but was old and cracked and grass and weeds were shocking to see. The Jose Marti Airport was built in 1930 and has not changed much according to individuals I spoke with. The people greeting us and all the service workers were amazing. They have immigration checkpoints where eve rything went smoothly. We all had to say we were writing “to support the people of Cuba” As a note we were all told only to bring cash in the form of twenty’s, ten’s and 5-dollar bills. They do not accept credit cards. We boarded the bus and were greeted by our tour guide Alexis, bus driver and Batia, a Cuban American from the tour company in NYC. Ironically Batia turned out to own a part time residence at the Parker Dorado here in Hallandale Beach. Our first stop was Revolution Square.

Our journey began where Castro gave his first speech televised throughout the world on his successful invasion and control of the Government from Batista’s. Batista was a cruel and brutal dictator. The Square was designed in the 1938 competition which is the largest state in the world dedicated to writer Jose Marti. It was not actually built until the fifties when Batista seized power in 1952. It was completed in 1958 and was meant to be called the Civic Square with its main statue of Jose Marti who is still revered by many of the Cuban people as the Father of the Country. Castro renamed it after his coupe.

Tragically the large area is surrounded by many government buildings that used to house the Department of Tourism, Department of the Interior, and others like

Guevara. The area left me with the thought of what it was like before oppressive dictators and communism. When it was a place for art control and the gateway to America. We would soon find out simply what Jose Marti meant when he wrote Socialism will be the prison of people. He was the Father of Cuba; he wrote and fought for Cuba’s freedom from Spain. He wrote against Karl Marx and supported an ideology of shared responsibility and freedom for families to produce wealth. We got back on the bus and traveled through the city. It was then we would truly see the failure of Communism. I will continue with my reflection of Cuba next week. As you celebrate your various Holidays this week, I wish you a Happy Holiday!

MODS Awarded Grant For Character Development Children

Building a Better World Together Permanent Exhibit to Open in 2026

The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to advance the Museum’s commitment to fostering positive character development in children. The grant will support MODS’ efforts to cultivate essential character traits through its exhibits, programs and events. Central to this mission is the development of Building a Better World Together, a permanent exhibit designed to empower the next generation by integrating character development into the Museum’s offerings and inspiring young people to become confident, thoughtful leaders. MODS received the prestigious grant through Fostering Character Through Children’s Museums, a Lilly Endowment initiative that aims to help museums develop new or expand existing efforts that explore and encourage the development of positive character traits such as curiosity, empathy, compassion, integrity, kindness, teamwork, respect, responsibility, courage and community awareness in children. MODS is one of just 15 children’s museums around the nation being funded through the initiative.

Slated to open in 2026, the 5,000square-foot Building a Better World Together permanent exhibit will engage children and adults in a creative atmosphere that inspires innovative thinking and empowers them to make meaningful contributions to their families, communities and to the world around them.

“At the core of Building a Better World Together is a powerful question: How can a child take meaningful action to address today’s challenges and build a better world?” said Joseph P. Cox, President and CEO of MODS. “We champion education, which fosters knowledge, capacity and character traits — essentials for 21stcentury learning. We are deeply grateful for this grant, which will enable us to place character at the forefront of our efforts to inspire hope, spark innovative solutions and empower the next generation to shape a brighter future.”

In 2022, MODS was designated as the Hub for Resilience Education by the Community Foundation of Broward, recognizing the Museum as a pivotal force in leading the community’s conversation, education and action regarding sustainability and resilience.

What sets this project apart is its focus on character development. Through extensive research and feedback from more than 1,500 Museum guests, educators, community partners and staff, MODS identified four foundational traits — critical thinking, caring, cooperation and confidence — as essential for empowering children to navigate challenges and act with purpose, rooted in hope. Building a Better World Together will be an immersive exhibit designed to inspire children of all ages to take meaningful action for a sustainable future. Highlights will include a digital theater exploring Florida’s past, present and future; live coral reef research station and an aquifer model showcasing conservation efforts;

learn about the importance of caring for our planet. Cox added, “As children grow, their experiences and lessons evolve and they have the opportunity to gain deeper understanding and a greater capacity to contribute. This project goes beyond teaching facts; it inspires lifelong values and empowers them to make a positive impact on the world.”

“Children’s museums are places where children of all ages can learn informally, sensory experiences and self-expression,” said Ted Maple, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for education and youth pro grams. “We are excited to see how the museums funded through this initiative will help children and their families to explore various character traits and reflect together on ways these traits can be practiced and strengthened.”
