Holiday Tips When Shopping For A Device For Your Son Or Daughter
(Family Features) It’s the time of year when you may be shopping for a digital device for your son or daughter, but you worry about the world they may come in contact with. Keeping a watchful eye on your kids requires an increasing level of tech savvy and many parents find it intimidating. Not only are your kids vulnerable to bad actors online, but your family’s personal information could be at risk, as well.
Learn how to protect your children and family in this digital age with these tips:
Elementary-Age Children
• Encourage open communication. Have conversations about what your kids see and do online and talk with them about potential dangers. Avoid lecturing in favor of an open exchange of information.
• Make their inherent interest in privacy work in your favor. Kids in this age group, particularly toward the middle
school years, understand the concept of privacy and value it immensely. Use that context to help them understand what goes online is there to stay. Talk about what kinds of information should always be kept private, including identifying details like addresses and social security numbers.
• Stay on alert. Not all apps are completely safe (even the ones you can access from trusted stores) and not all filters are foolproof. Keep close tabs on what your kids are downloading by reading comments and reviews, and regularly monitoring what kind of content they see.
Middle School and High School Kids
• Continue talking about privacy. You can never have too many conversations about privacy. What seems like harmless sharing on social media can be quite revealing. For example, frequent posts about visits to a favorite store or
restaurant can allow a predator to begin tracking behavior patterns that make your child a target. It’s also important for kids to understand how their privacy settings work. For example, settings that allow exposure to friends of friends make their visibility to strangers much broader than they may realize.
• Help manage their online reputation. Behaviors that once resulted in a day or two of hallway chatter can now live forever. Documenting mischief online is only fun until it spills over into real life and everyone sees those mistakes in full color - including prospective future employers.
• Be clear about your position on bullying. From the safe distance of a screen, it’s easier for kids (and adults) to say things they’d never say in person. Teach your kids to handle problems constructively offline and avoid engaging in attacks on others through social media, email and
other platforms.
College Students
• Reinforce the risks. Once they’re on their own, kids may feel more liberated to make their own choices online. However, college students are easy prey for identity theft and worse. Remind them what’s at stake if they fail to protect their identity and private information, like where they live and what they do on a regular basis.
• Teach smart practices. With all the independence that comes with college life, this is an ideal time for your student to take personal responsibility for his or her online security, including learning about virus protection, updating software, avoiding scams and backing up data.

Holiday Travel Tips: For Those Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia
One of the busiest travel times of the year is approaching, with nearly 80 million Americans planning to travel during the long holiday period, according to AAA estimates. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering tips to help those traveling with a loved one with a dementiarelated illness make their trip as easy and comfortable as possible.
“A family trip to visit a loved one, friend, or favorite destination can be a great way to spend the holiday season, including for those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementiarelated illnesses, including those affected by Dementia.” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services “Whether traveling near or far, there are preparations and adaptations family caregivers can make to help their loved one feel more comfortable and relaxed throughout the trip.”
Before The Trip
Make sure travel is advisable. Someone in the early stages of Dementia may still enjoy traveling, but as the dis-
ease progresses, travel may become too difficult. Factoring in the trip’s duration and/or the stage of the person’s illness, consult with their physician to make sure travel is recommended.
Plan according to the person’s abilities. Plan the travel mode and timing of your trip in ways that minimize anxiety and stress. Assess the person’s abilities and needs when making arrangements; if they travel better at a specific time of day, try to schedule plans for that period of time.
Preserve the person’s routine. Small or unfamiliar changes can be overwhelming and stressful to someone with Dementia so to the greatest extent possible, maintain the person’s routine. For example, if they normally eat at a certain time, build that into the itinerary.
Stock up before leaving. Bring snacks, water, activities and supportive items (i.e., a blanket, a soft pillow). Include an extra and comfortable change of clothing that adapts to climate changes. Take important health and legal-related documentation, a list of current medications, and physician information with you.
If Traveling by Mass Transit
Know the security procedures. Check in advance with airports/train stations about security screening procedures and arrive early for a less stressful experience. This way, you can familiarize the person ahead of time about what will happen at the checkpoint. This can reduce potential anxiety. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers assistance with the screening process to air travelers with certain medical conditions, including Dementia-related illnesses; contact their TSA Cares Helpline at least 72 hours prior to your flight to learn more.
Advise the airline. Let the airline know that you’re traveling with someone who has cognitive impairments and inform them of safety concerns and special needs.
If traveling by car build in break time. Take regular breaks on road trips for food, bathroom visits, and rest.
Families with questions about traveling with someone who has a Dementiarelated illness can speak with a licensed social worker through the AFA Helpline by
phone (866-232-8484), text message (646-586-5283), or webchat (www.alzfdn .org). The helpline is available seven days a week.
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA)
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related Dementias nationwide and to fund research for better treatment and a cure. Its services include a National Toll-Free Helpline (866-232-8484) staffed entirely by licensed social workers, caregiver support groups, educational programs and publications for caregivers, dementia-care training for healthcare professionals, the National Memory Screening Program, and more.
For more information about AFA, call: 866-232-8484, visit: www.alzfdn.org, or: connect with them on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, or LinkedIn. AFA holds Charity Navigator’s top 4-star rating.
This holiday season, take Broward County Transit to your favorite festivities, shopping and more. Sit back, relax and enjoy the wonderment of the season. It’s easy, simple and affordable! Just try it. BCT takes you where you want to go.

Kwanzaa are only a short 20 and 21 days away. It looks like the holidays around the town. Gulfstream Park kicked off the holiday with the Symphony of Lights Tree Lighting Ceremony this past Saturday, it was the first time I had the opportunity to do the countdown with my grandchildren. I highly recommend it as one of your holiday stops. It’s a beautiful display with magnificent light shows set to music. It is free to the public and will continue until December 31st. You can also shop at home goods shops and clothing stores and even enjoy one of the many restaurants.
Our City has also begun to install our Christmas lights around town. I’m always asked why all the medians aren’t decorated. Not all medians throughout the city are wired with electrical service. We received permission from FDOT over twenty plus years ago to hardwire the two main medians on East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. This location was where we held our Holiday Festival through a part-
Staff has been working on our “Holiday in the Park” that will be held this Friday, December 6th. Each year the City kicks off the holiday season with this wonderful family event for all ages. The family friendly event featured Children’s Activities, Holiday Crafts, Community Performances, Visits with Santa, Holiday Music, Inflatables, Amusements, Food Trucks and more. There is no entry fee to attend. A $5 arm band allows unlimited access to the amusements and inflatables. For more information on this year’s event, visit: www.coHB.org/Holiday.
As the holidays are upon us, we want all our residents to know we understand that the season brings even more traffic to our roadways. We remain focused on providing alternatives. To our neighbors just coming in for the season, we have “The Hallandale Beach Cloud Bus.” This is our new and improved minibus system. It is electric and free to ride.
We have reduced the wait time by adding more buses on the routes. We also
to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday with some days until 7:45 p.m. Visit: www.theCloudHB.com for more information.
Do you need to get somewhere and cannot get the bus? We are providing 10dollar ride vouchers for Uber and Lyft citywide to visit any business in our CRA boundaries. This is everything west of 14th Avenue. We did a pilot program with Freebee but found that the cost per ride was not cost beneficial for the limitedservice area. We want to make sure we support buying from and visiting local businesses. We encourage our residents to visit our many stores and restaurants by taking not just our bus but Uber or Lyft. Do not worry about parking or about designating a driver. Leave the drive to us and enjoy our entertainment options safely. Visit the CRA’s website to find out more at: www.cohbCRA.org
Our CRA offers many assistance programs for residents and businesses within the boundaries. We know many are strug-
program that fits your needs. Last meeting we approved a new program. Many of our restaurants have been struggling through the season and are dealing with increased costs. One may ask why it’s important to help a restaurant or business. Many of our local businesses provide jobs for our residents. If they go out of business that means more people won’t be able to make ends meet. Just like our rental assistance program this program provides gap funding to stay in business. 68th Annual Candy Cane Parade On Hollywood Beach
The 68th Annual Candy Cane Parade is lighting up the iconic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk this Saturday, December 7th, starting at 7 p.m. This year’s theme, “Favorite Children’s Christmas Movie,” promises a nostalgic evening filled with holiday cheer.
What began as a creative initiative back in the mid-1950’s by a group of enterprising Hollywood merchants has blossomed into one of the longeststanding holiday parades in the nation. The inaugural parade was conceived as a clever strategy to entice patrons to peruse the local shops and businesses. Over the decades, this simple yet ingenious idea has grown into a beloved tradition, captivating audiences with its array of bril-
liantly illuminated floats and vehicles. Today it features dozens of lighted floats and vehicles along the parade route entertaining the thousands of spectators who line the Broadwalk. The parade kicks off at Missouri Street, traveling south along the Broadwalk, passing the parade emcee stationed at the Hollywood Beach Theatre on Johnson Street, and concluding at Harrison Street. Guests can enjoy prime viewing by bringing a lawn chair or securing a table at one of the many seaside restaurants lining the route. Marvel at the festive floats, energetic marching bands, and imaginative displays crafted by civic groups, nonprofits, and children’s organizations. To “Help Keep Hollywood Beautiful,”
parade participants are encouraged to hand out candy instead of tossing it from floats, helping to reduce waste along the Broadwalk and beach. Parade-goers can also show their commitment to sustainability by bringing reusable water bottles and be #SeenBeingGreen. Due to the high demand for parking on the barrier island, beginning at 5:00 p.m., parade goers are encouraged to park in one of the Downtown Parking Garages and take the free patron shuttle to the beach. The Downtown Parking Garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Shuttles will circulate non-stop throughout the evening with the last shuttle leaving the beach at 10:00 p.m. Downtown
