Free Dental Clinic

Coming To South Florida To Address Limited Access To Care

The clinic will open its doors at 6 a.m. on both Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27, with services provided on a firstcome, first-served basis.

Access to dental care is one of the most significant health challenges in the United States today. According to the American Dental Association, nearly one in four Americans struggles to access basic dental care due to various factors such as geographic barriers, financial constraints and lack of insurance.

As a result, millions of Americans go without necessary dental services, leading to pain, infections and worsening health conditions. In Miami Gardens, Florida, this issue is particularly pressing for many residents,

where economic challenges and limited healthcare access leave a significant portion of the community underserved.

To address this pressing need, Remote Area Medical (RAM), a leading nonprofit organization focused on providing free healthcare services to underserved communities, is bringing its renowned dental clinic to Miami Gardens. The event will take place on April 26th - April 27th, 2025, at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, located at 3000 NW 199th Street, Miami Gardens, Florida 33056. This free clinic will provide essential dental services to residents of Miami Gardens and surrounding areas who may otherwise not have access to care.

As industries rapidly evolve, there’s an urgent need to connect the brightest minds— founders, investors and professionals—to foster collaboration, spark creativity and drive growth. One of the most highly anticipated events of 2025 is poised to do just that: the 1st Annual Tech

Set for May 1st, 2025, at the Miami Dade College Auditorium in Downtown Miami, this landmark gathering will bring together over 500 entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and tech professionals for a day full of insightful discussions, networking opportunities and inspiration. It’s a conference designed to spark new ideas, forge gamechanging partnerships and elevate the startup ecosystem to new heights. Since its inception in August 2023, the Tech + Startups

Community has seen rapid growth. Born in the vibrant city of Miami, this community has expanded to over 12,000 members across 24 cities in 8 countries. Its mission is simple yet ambitious: to connect the brightest minds in startups, technology, and investment, creating a global ecosystem where innovation thrives. The conference on May 1st marks a major milestone for this fast-growing organization, providing a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge, strategies, and insights that will shape the future of the

Breaking Down Barriers to Dental Care

The lack of access to dental care is a multi-faceted problem. For many people, particularly those without insurance, paying for even routine dental procedures can be prohibitively expensive. According to a 2022 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 45% of U.S. adults said they did not visit the dentist in the past year due to cost concerns. Moreover, in areas like Miami Gardens, access to care is further hampered by transportation issues, economic challenges, and a lack of available providers.

To help address these barriers, RAM’s free dental clinic in

History of South Florida Pride Bands

In 1986 Mort Jonas and Bruce Freeman decided to form a musical group for the Gay and Lesbian Community in South Florida. Jonas had recently returned from a vacation in San Francisco where he had connected with an organization called the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA) that was performing at the Gay Games II. Freeman had just moved to Fort Lauderdale from Washington, D.C. where he had been a founding member of the DC’s Different Drummers, one of the more established

The South Florida Pride Bands has had the great honor of hosting the annual convention of the LGBA six times. The 2009 LGBA Conference, hosted in New Orleans debuted the first ever LGBA Honors Jazz Ensemble, which featured 6-time Grammy Award winner Gary Burton on vibraphone. The most recent conference, “Fiesta Caliente,” was held in 2014 and featured a concert band of about 250 musicians onstage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ AuRene Theater.

The Concert Band, Tropical Winds Band, Jazz Band, Youth Band and Marching Band produce two major concerts per year at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to formal concerts, they perform at pride events from Jacksonville to Key West, Christmas on Las Olas, Christmas Eve at MCC Sunshine Cathedral, the Tuesday’s Angels

Bike Ride, and many other events as requested. The bands regularly share the stage with local performers and believe strongly in supporting local talent. The Concert Band has enjoyed collaborating with the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, Lambda Chorale, In Harmony, MCC Sunshine Cathedral Choir, and the Florida Singing Sons Boychoir. Along with these local collaborators, singers, dancers, special lighting and video presentations all add to the bands’ large-scale productions.

The Pride Jazz Ensemble is also very active in the community, playing at several events yearly. Most recently, they had the honor of playing at a fundraising event where former President Bill Clinton was the guest speaker.

Members of the South Florida Pride Pride Bands, as part of a massed concert or marching band of the LGBA, have participated in several Gay Games and marches on Washington, three Inaugurations and parades as far and wide as Palm Springs, CA., Montreal,

Canada, Superior, Wisconsin, Las Vegas, Nevada, and most recently at the Southern Decadence Parade in New Orleans, Louisiana.

While the band has definitely grown and changed throughout the years, one thing remains constant. Their primary function is to entertain audiences in South Florida and support the community through our various performances. Thank you for supporting them through attendance at their performances. By doing so, you allow them to continue to supply South Florida with quality musical performances.

The South Florida Pride Concert Band is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to enriching the community through music while fostering an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ youth. Now celebrating its 38th Season, the band continues to be a beacon of artistic excellence and advocacy in Florida.

Tony DeSare Trio Brings ‘Sinatra & Beyond’ To Amaturo Theater

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience

Tony DeSare Trio: Sinatra & Beyond a night of timeless music, live at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

With a voice reminiscent of Sinatra and a musical style all his own, Tony DeSare brings the timeless magic of swing to life with the Tony DeSare Trio in a muchanticipated show, Sinatra & Beyond. Set for Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 7:45 p.m. at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this unforget table performance celebrates the Great American Songbook while showcasing DeSare’s original compositions and fresh interpretations of Jazz classics.

With more than 17K Instagram Followers, more than 47K Facebook Followers and 21K Subscribers on YouTube, Desare is a musician for our time. Recognized for his velvety vocals and masterful piano artistry, Tony is more than a Sinatra interpreter—he is an acclaimed singer and songwriter with original works. His albums Radio Show and Song Diaries, blend seamlessly with jazz and pop influences, making his per formances both nostalgic and refreshingly contemporary.

“It’s really about making sure that the music happens in the purest way possible. It’s not about impressing them,” says DeSare. “As any performer knows, when you get in front of people, everything changes. It becomes about a musical exchange, a conversation, a constant exchange of energy.”

Backed by his dynamic ensemble— David Rourke on guitar and Chuck Bergeron on bass—DeSare delivers a night of swinging classics, heartfelt ballads, and inventive arrangements. The synergy among the musicians enhances his charismatic stage presence, transforming each set into an intimate and immersive experience. Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of beloved Sinatra favorites interwoven with DeSare’s own compositions that highlight his unique artistry and passion for Jazz.

field of wine. To become a Master Sommelier, candidates must pass a grueling series of examinations that test their knowledge of wine, including their ability to identify wines by taste, sight, and aroma. This prestigious designation is awarded to only the most skilled and knowledgeable professionals in the industry, making Miliotes’ achievements not just impressive but extraordinary. His passion for wine is evident in his unrelenting pursuit of knowledge, which has taken him to renowned wine-growing regions across the globe—from the rolling vineyards of France to the sun-drenched hills of South Africa.

Miliotes’ deep connection to wine is not just academic; it is rooted in a true love of the craft. He has spent years studying and curating a portfolio of wines that reflect his dedication to quality, and his unique approach to wine education makes his tastings both informative and fun. For Miliotes, wine is more than just a drink—it’s a medium for storytelling, a gateway into cultures, history, and the art of sensory exploration. This philosophy is what makes his blind tastings at Marti’s Bistro a must-attend event for anyone interested in elevating their wine experience.

A

Blind

Tasting Like No Other

One of the key features of Miliotes’ upcoming wine tasting is the “blind” element. Guests will be served six carefully selected wines—both red and white varietals—without knowing what they are in advance. The goal of a blind tasting is to focus purely on the sensory experience: the taste, aroma, and appearance of each wine. As participants sip and savor, they are encouraged to engage their senses and use their instincts to identify the wines’ characteristics, including their flavor profiles, origin, and varietal.

For many, a blind tasting is a fun challenge that encourages learning through discovery. Each glass reveals a new layer of complexity, and Miliotes will be there to guide guests through the experience, sharing his insights into the nuances of each wine. The tasting is not just an opportunity to sample wine; it’s a chance to understand the story behind each bottle. Miliotes will discuss the vineyards, winemaking processes, and the factors that make each wine unique, giving guests a deeper appreciation for what they’re tasting.

A Feast for the Senses:

Charcuterie and Scenic Views

The intimate setting of Marti’s Bistro, with its picturesque views of the New River and downtown Fort Lauderdale, sets the perfect stage for this wine adventure. Guests will sip their wines while overlooking the tranquil water, creating a sensory experience that engages not just the taste

DeSare has headlined venues from Jazz at Lincoln Center to major symphony halls, drawing comparisons to legendary crooners while infusing his performances with a modern sensibility. The New York Times praises his ability to “put a fresh spin on old-school classics,” while DownBeat Magazine hails his musicianship as “a perfect balance of tradition and innovation.” David Bowden, music director of the Philharmonic, lauded DeSare as “a supreme showman,” noting, “He clearly understands how to engage an audience and how to find ways to connect.”

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Tony DeSare Trio: Sinatra & Beyond—a night of timeless music, dazzling musicianship, and captivating storytelling—live at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a NotFor-Profit Organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, educational programs, a jazz scholarship program and musical services provided by the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band.

The History of Gold Coast Jazz Society Frederick G. Ruffner, Jr. had a vision to bring more jazz to the “Gold Coast” area of South Florida. In 1992, Fred and a group of avid Jazz buffs made this vision a reality by forming a Non-Profit Organization called the Gold Coast Jazz Society in Fort Lauderdale.

Following its formation, the GCJS developed a concert series, which was presented in the main dining room of the historic Riverside Hotel, located on the

famous Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. As the concert series continued to grow and expand, a larger venue was required. The concert series was eventually moved to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located in the Arts & Science District of Fort Lauderdale. Today, the sevenconcert Jazz series continues to be presented in the Amaturo Theater each year from November through May. Over the years the Society has grown and expanded to include the presentation of jazz education and community outreach activities, the Jeanette M. The selection of meats, cheeses, and accompaniments will be carefully curated to pair perfectly with the wines, enhancing the tasting experience. Whether you’re savoring a rich red or a crisp white, the charcuterie will provide the perfect balance of salty, savory, and creamy flavors to elevate each sip. In addition to the incredible food and wine, the breathtaking views from Marti’s Bistro add an extra layer of magic to the event. The Trap Of Low Expectations

How much you accomplish in life is influenced by what you expect to accomplish. Those with low expectations have a low threshold for what they will be satisfied with. For them mediocrity or less, is good enough.

People with high expectations have a standard of excellence for themselves and what they want to achieve. They push themselves to accomplish challenging goals. They set the bar higher than may be comfortable.

Your expectations are the first step for programming your mind to work towards a particular goal. Your expectations determine what you will be satisfied with. Typically, your mind will not accomplish more than you expect.

What would happen to an athlete who expects to lose each race? Their training would never be at a winning level. They would not put much effort into preparation. They would not push themselves during a race. That’s why you won’t find competitive athletes who expect to lose. What expectations do you have for yourself? What expectations do you have for the future? Your mind will only meet, not exceed your expectations. If you have low expectations, the best you can achieve are low results.

Let’s look at some examples of the negative impact of low expectations. An athlete who expects to lose has no chance of winning. A small business owner who expects to go bankrupt will not succeed. A teenager who expects that no one will like him or her will have a difficult time socializing. A performer who expects to deliver an awful performance will disappoint the audience.

Low expectations create a self-fulfilling

prophecy. Since your mind strives to at best, meet the expectations you set, low expectations severely limit your achievements. Success demands high expectations.

Can you imagine an Olympic skier who expected to fall? Of course not. Such a mindset would make winning impossible. They would not be training to win. During the race, they would not be competing to win.

Would a person who is opening a new business expect to go bankrupt? Such an attitude virtually ensures bankruptcy sooner than later. If bankruptcy was a foregone conclusion in their mind, they would then make endless poor financial decisions.

A person who expects that no one likes them, or will like them, subconsciously acts in a manner which repels the people they come into contact with. Their behavior creates a self-fulfilling prophecy, which then reinforces their low expectations. What would happen to an actress or actor who expected to give a terrible performance before going out on stage? Would they have any chance of delivering an award-winning presentation? Of course not. Their mind subconsciously limits their actions because of their low expectations.

Any low expectations you have for yourself also create a self-fulfilling prophecy. You bring about the same results you are expecting. This is the trap of low expectations. The only way to break free is by elevating your expectations. Take some time to thoroughly and honestly assess the expectations you have for yourself and for your life. In order to make positive changes you must have high expectations. Don’t waste time formulating justifications for any low expectations.

Dania Beach Celebrates Earth Day With Annual Beach Clean-Up To Keep Shoreline Shipshape

Ahoy, Dania Beach! It’s that time of year again, when locals and visitors alike come together for the highly anticipated annual Earth Day beach clean-up. On Monday, April 21st, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the City will host its fifth annual event, offering an exciting and meaningful opportunity to protect the shoreline and enjoy some fun along the way. This year’s theme, “Pirates for a Pristine Beach,” will add an adventurous twist to the clean-up, transforming it into a thrilling treasure hunt. Volunteers of all ages, from local schools, non-profits, neighborhoods and businesses, are invited to scour Dania Beach’s shoreline for litter “booty,” all while helping preserve the coastal beauty the city is known for. For five years now, the community has come together each Earth Day to help keep Dania Beach’s coastline clean and healthy. Commissioner Joyce L. Davis, who has been instrumental in organizing the event, is passionate about its longterm impact. “For five years, we’ve been bringing the community together to care for our beach, and this year, we’re making it an adventure,” said Davis. “Keeping Dania Beach pristine is a commitment we all share. It’s not just about one day—it’s about preserving the beauty and health of our coastline for generations to come.”

Dania Beach, located in Broward County, Florida, boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoiled coastal landscapes in the area, and residents take great pride in the natural resources that

surround them. The annual clean-up is a vital part of maintaining the beach’s environmental health. Every year, volunteers play an essential role in removing litter and debris that can harm local wildlife and pollute the waters.

Volunteers will be tasked with searching for and collecting litter “booty,” such as plastic bottles, wrappers, and fishing nets, all while embodying their inner pirates. The concept is designed to make the clean-up experience more fun and interactive, especially for kids and families, while still emphasizing the serious responsibility of keeping the beach clean.

The event will also feature several pirate-themed contests and activities, making it a perfect opportunity for families, friends and groups to come together for an afternoon of community involvement. Volunteers can expect to see fun prizes, face painting, even some light bites and sweet treats to keep the energy high and the atmosphere festive.

Participants will also enjoy music throughout the event, helping set the tone for a lively and enjoyable afternoon. Whether it’s dancing to some tunes or simply enjoying the vibe, there’s something for everyone at this Earth Day celebration.

As a token of appreciation for their hard work, volunteers will receive a commemorative T-shirt and the opportunity to log community service hours—perfect for students looking to fulfill service requirements. Additionally, free parking will be

available for all volunteers, making it easy for everyone to participate, regardless of where they’re coming from.

The event is a fantastic chance for residents, tourists and those who may not have participated before to get involved in environmental stewardship. It’s a reminder that taking care of our planet is an ongoing responsibility, one that extends beyond Earth Day itself.

Earth Day, Every Day

While the annual clean-up is an exciting occasion, the City of Dania Beach reminds everyone that Earth Day should be every day. To help residents continue their environmental efforts year-round, the city has set up clean-up stations along the beach. These stations are equipped with baskets that visitors can use to collect litter while they enjoy the coastal environment. It’s a simple yet effective way to ensure that the community remains engaged in protecting the natural beauty of the area.

The clean-up stations are a great resource for those who may not be able to attend the annual event but still want to do their part in keeping Dania Beach clean. The city’s commitment to sustainability is evident in these small but significant efforts, which help create a more environmentally conscious community.

The Dania Beach Earth Day clean-up isn’t just about collecting trash—it’s about fostering a collective sense of environmental stewardship and building stronger

community connections. Every piece of litter removed from the shoreline represents a small victory in the battle against pollution and the preservation of marine life. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together each year with one shared mission: to make the beach a better place for future generations. This sense of unity is at the heart of the event and plays a critical role in cultivating an environmentally responsible community. By showing up for just a couple of hours, participants become part of a much larger movement that has the power to create lasting change.

How to Get Involved

Those interested in participating in this year’s “Pirates for a Pristine Beach” cleanup are encouraged to gather their families, friends and co-workers to make a difference. Not only will they be part of an exciting adventure, but they will also contribute to a cause that impacts the entire community.

For more information or to register as a volunteer, contact the Dania Beach Office of the Mayor and Commission at: (954) 924-6800. Extension#: 3607. Or by email at: msingh@daniabeachfl.gov. Together, with a shared commitment to keeping our beaches clean, we can ensure that Dania Beach remains a beautiful and vibrant coastal haven for years to come. So, grab your pirate hat, don your gloves, and set sail for a cleaner, greener future—Dania Beach is ready for you!

Goodman JFS Hand-Delivers Dignity & Joy To Holocaust Survivor This Passover

This Passover, Goodman Jewish Family Services (JFS) is uniting Broward County through a holiday initiative to distribute over 1,100 Seder meals and gift bags to those in need, including over 600 to seniors and Holocaust survivors like Viviane Yassur. Beyond tradition and nourishment, these visits offer a vital connection for many seniors— nearly half of whom experience loneliness—making each delivery not just a meal but an emotional and memorable experience for all. Goodman JFS, serving one of the largest Holocaust survivor populations in the U.S., is transforming these deliveries into moments of hope and holiday spirit. Each Kosher meal package includes traditional favorites and a personal note.

Quarter--The Mallah Ghetto, where essentials like bread and milk were rationed. Growing up undernourished, Viviane battled Tuberculosis and various medical conditions from a young age.

Passover runs from the evening of April 12th to April 20th.

About Viviane Yassur

Born in Fes, Morocco in 1939, Viviane’s early life was shaped by adversity. As antisemitic laws spread in 1940, her family was forced from their home in Fes to the Jewish

Most of what she knows about her time in Mallah was told to her by her parents. However, she does have memories of the darkness, consequently causing her to live in fear. She later learned that the darkness stemmed from curfews and blue paper covering the window panes to conceal their presence from the outside. To this day, she is still afraid of the dark.

Despite these challenges, Viviane’s resilience shone through. After the war, an opportunity

emerged for young people to study in the United States and return to their country to teach what they studied. Viviane would go on to earn a full scholarship to UCLA for a certification to teach English. Her time in LA was transformative, living with a Psychiatrist’s family and helping care for their daughter while going to school.

Returning to Morocco, Viviane taught English briefly before moving to Israel, where she continued her teaching career and met her first husband, an American. The marriage ended in divorce, but she later found love again in Maryland, where she worked as a bookkeeper. Viviane and her second husband eventually retired to Hallandale Beach. She has no children but remains close to her nieces and holds a rich history of memories from a life of resilience and reinvention.

This Thursday Goodman JFS leaders will personally visit 86-yearold Holocaust survivor and Hallandale Beach resident Viviane Yassur to deliver her Passover Seder meal and holiday package at Highland Park Village in Hallandale Beach.

With The Largest Land Mammals On The Planet At The Museum Of Discovery And Science

Elephants: Giants of the Desert, a larger-than-life 3D documentary film about a rare group of elephants in the Namib Desert trying to protect the newest member of their family, opens at the AutoNation® IMAX® Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) on April 4th. Created by the filmmakers of popular giant screen titles Sea Lions: Life by A Whisker and Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa, Elephants: Giants of the Desert brings the inspiring story of a resilient elephant family surviving against the odds in one of the harshest environments on Earth - Africa’s Namib Desert - to the giant screen for the very first time.

“Long revered as symbols of strength, caring and wisdom, elephants are one of nature’s most inspiring examples of survival and adaptation,” said Joseph P. Cox, President and CEO of MODS. “Elephants: Giants of the Desert offers a rare glimpse into the family dynamics of this endangered species as they navigate the harsh conditions of Southwest Africa. We invite audiences of all ages to join us for this impactful story of environmental perseverance against all odds.”

Filmed on location in the Namib, one of the oldest and largest deserts, the film provides unprecedented access to one of only two populations of desert elephants in the world, totaling close to 150 individu-

als compared to a historic population of 2,500-3,500 in the 18th century. Despite having significant needs for water, these elephants have somehow learned to thrive in this land of extremes. With a slow reproduction cycle of 3+ years and a high mortality rate due partly to the desert conditions, every calf becomes more than precious, and the desert elephants themselves seem to know it well, too.

The film’s story is driven by Little Foot, a newborn calf, as she survives her perilous and most vulnerable first year despite the odds, helped by a fierce extended family of elephants. Audiences will follow Little Foot on an epic and at times whimsical journey, getting up close and personal with the largest land mammals on the planet as they care for the smallest member of the herd. Together the matriarchal herd of aunts and sisters will brave the desert’s elements and use some elephant superpowers, from finding underground aquifers to foreseeing sandstorms. Through the eyes of these elephants, audiences will also see the hidden side of an otherworldly and formidable landscape, where a cast of iconic animals including giraffes, monkeys and lions form a unique canvas of life.

To capture the adventures of Little Foot on screen, the filmmaking crew including Paul Phelan, Tamatea Kohu and Cam Batten lived another kind of adventure

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific Soars At The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center

Broadway enthusiasts and lovers of timeless musicals are in for a treat as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific makes its way to the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) for the final production of the 2025 Broadway at LPAC series. Running from April 10th through April 27th, this iconic musical promises to captivate audiences with its unforgettable melodies, stirring themes, and heartwrenching storylines.

From the sweeping romance of “Some Enchanted Evening” to the catchy optimism of “Cock-Eyed Optimist” and the tropical allure of “Bali Ha’i,” South Pacific remains one of the most beloved works in the American musical theater canon. The show introduced some of the most enduring songs in Broadway history and its powerful narrative, based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel Tales of the South Pacific, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Set during World War II on a fictional island in the South Pacific, the story revolves around Ensign Nellie Forbush, an American nurse who falls in love with the middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner Emile de Becque. However, their love is tested by Nellie’s internal struggle with Emile’s mixed-race children. Meanwhile, a secondary romance between U.S. Marine Lieutenant Joseph Cable and Liat, a young Tonkinese woman, explores Cable’s deep fears of the social repercussions of marrying someone from an ethnic background different than his own. The musical tackles themes of racial prejudice and cultural conflict, most famously in the song “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” which remains a poignant commentary on societal intolerance even today. Michael Ursua, the director and musical director of this production, says that South Pacific’s themes of racial tolerance and the search for personal meaning are as relevant now as ever. “The story itself is beautiful,” says Ursua. “Then

there is this panorama of the South Pacific pitted against the narrow-mindedness of bigotry and the horror of the war that was taking place at that time. We see an awakening for some of the characters when they do their own introspection, and the whole idea that people are searching for something or running away from something—or better yet, running to something—is fascinating. And the show’s message on racial tolerance is as relevant as anything written before or since.”

Ursua’s directorial vision is paired with a talented cast that brings these complex characters to life. Christopher Sanders takes on the role of the charming and world-weary Emile de Becque, while Casey Sacco stars as the spunky and idealistic Ensign Nellie Forbush. The role of the fiery Bloody Mary, who plays a pivotal part in the secondary romance between Joseph Cable and Liat, will be portrayed by Marisol Morales-Dow. The cast also includes Lovell Rose as the comical Luther Billis, Collin Salvatore as the conflicted Lieutenant. Joseph Cable, Thaylin Maria as the innocent Liat, Bill Brewer as Lieutenant George Brackett and Dan Carter as Commander. William Harbison. Eytan Deray and Eli Flynn round out the principal cast as Stewpot and Professor, respectively.

behind the camera, lugging intricate production gear into the remote desert, and battling the elements despite being out of their natural habitat. Earning the trust of the elephants, especially around their little one, took patience and respect, for which the filmmakers were rewarded with a close look into the lives of these enigmatic yet endangered creatures.

“I don’t think you can meet elephants and spend time with them without being profoundly affected or changed by them,” filmmaker Paul Phelan reflects. “This is really the final seconds of the last round for them. We need to give them a voice.”

Elephants: Giants of the Desert is a family friendly movie filmed for Giant Screen and IMAX® theaters in native 3D, where State-Of-The-Art image and sound will immerse audiences in the unbelievable world of the elephants and their true story of family and survival.

They’re easy to add to a variety of recipes - even breakfast pizza - to enhance flavor and nutrition. Try them on the stove, baked, microwaved, grilled, slow-cooked or air-fried for quick and easy options that are a breeze in the kitchen.

In fact, they’re even considered a “Diabetes superfood” by the American Diabetes Association. As a natural sweetener, they give recipes that sweet flavor you crave without the added sugar.

Whether they become your favorite oftused ingredient or you stock up on the abundant veggie, Sweetpotatoes also boast a long shelf-life - up to 4 weeks if stored properly in a cool, dry, wellventilated area away from heat sourcesmeaning you can buy in bulk without worrying about waste.

Individual Sweetpotato Breakfast Pizzas Recipe courtesy of the North Carolina Sweetpotato Commission Servings: 4

• 4 Medium North Carolina sweetpotatoes (about 2 pounds), divided

• 1 Tablespoon, plus 1 Teaspoon of Olive Oil, divided

• 1/4 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder

• 1/4 Teaspoon of Onion Powder

• 1/4 Teaspoon of Paprika

• 1/8 Teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper

• Kosher Salt, to taste

• Freshly Ground Black Pepper, to taste

• All-Purpose Flour, for rolling out dough

• 1 Pound of Whole-Wheat Pizza Dough at room temperature, divided into four equal portions, 4 ounces each

• 1 Cup of Freshly Shredded Gouda Cheese

• 4 Large Eggs

• 1/4 Cup of Diced Chives

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place 1 pound of the sweetpotatoes directly onto the rack and bake them, until they are soft, about 1 hour. Remove the Potatoes from the oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes. Peel and puree flesh until smooth; reserve 1 cup. Increase oven heat to 450 F. Peel remaining sweetpotatoes and dice into 1/ 2-inch pieces. Toss 2 cups diced sweetpotatoes with 1 Tablespoon of the Olive Oil, the Garlic Powder, the Onion Powder, the Paprika, the Cayenne and the Salt and the Pepper, to taste; place in an even layer on a baking sheet. Roast until it is softened but not crisp, 15-20 minutes, stirring halfway. Remove from the oven. Lightly flour clean, flat work surface. Roll each ball of dough out to about 1/4inch thickness (about 7 inches diameter). With remaining oil, lightly coat the rimless baking sheet. Transfer rolled out dough to baking sheet. Spread pureed sweetpotato over

surface of each dough round, about 1/4 cup each, leaving about 1/2-inch border. Top each with 1/4 cup shredded Gouda. Add 1/2 cup roasted sweetpotato cubes, leaving open space in the center of the pizzas.

Carefully crack one egg into the center of each pizza; bake for 15 minutes until crusts are golden brown on bottom, cheese is melted and egg whites are fully set. Carefully remove pizzas from the oven.

Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Top each pizza with 1 Tablespoon of Diced Chives.

2nd Annual One Hallandale Family Fun

Field Day, What Will Become Of Our CRA

The West Express Ladies Flag Football athletes had a triumphant victory over our Hallandale Beach Police Department.

The Second Annual One Hallandale Family Fun Field Day was a success! With well over 1,000 attendees over the 4-hour period. Many attended not simply the resource fair but many joined in the field events. We have not closed the books, but the biggest winner is PAL of Hallandale Beach and our local children that benefit from their year-round events.

Thank you to Memorial HealthCare System’s One City At A Time for being our Presenting Sponsors. To our other sponsors the City of Hallandale Beach, Hallandale Beach Police Department, BSO Fire Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper, United Way Family Stability Program, WellCare, The Fenstersheib Law Group, Walmart, Amsterdam, YMCA, Smatt’s Tennis Academy, Sloane Stephens Foundation, West Express Ladies Flag Football, Walgreens, Chick-filA Aventura, Capital Consultation, Fancy Impressions And Vontaii!

Also thank you to the many vendors, you can find at: www.mayorjoycooper .com that provided valuable information on health services and family services. A special Thank you to Tycoon Fun Foods that gave out free ice cream and the PAL Cheerleaders that offered snacks to support their Championship squad.

BSO held its very first showing of the brand new State-Of-The-Art Rescue helicopter that held an urban training landing right on OB Johnson Park. This was the first helicopter dedicated to, passed BSO Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson that died in the tragic crash. Attendees of all ages had a chance to speak with their pilots and see firsthand the amazing technology. In addition to the Helicopter, attendees had a chance to check out high Water

Rescue Vehicle Emergency Transport and Fire Apparatus. Our Police Department came out and held a flag football tournament against the PAL Coaches. The Hallandale Beach Police Department was victorious. They then competed against the West Express Ladies Flag Football athletes. West Express had a triumphant victory over our Hallandale Beach Police Department. Led by Coach Antwon Chaney who has coached and mentored over 60 plus players who have earned scholarships to play in college, maybe we will even see some in the 2028 Olympics. One of his players is Teriyah McFadden, she is the first girl to sign an NIL deal as a junior in high school. An outstanding student athlete who we had the honor to present a Key to The City. These young players really have major skills. Sorry PD! May I say rematch next year? I even joined in the fun by allowing attendees to “Dunk the Mayor.” It was so cute seeing the kids having fun. A few

adults had fun too. My first dunk, two young children ran up and asked if I was ok. Too cute!!

Thank you to the Parks Department, Building Department, Rotary Club and especially Jonathan Carrillo and Ms. Eve Paul, We are ONE Hallandale!

I do want to give a brief update to residents on our CRA which will be a longer on-going issue over the next months. The commission held a special meeting to discuss the future of our CRA. The two-hour meeting allowed us to review a few scenarios when it comes to the future of our CRA. In two years, we must decide whether to extend the CRA, reduce the boundaries or fully sunset.

I asked staff to put together the scenarios and the State began to push to preempt all CRA from continuing. The Legislators are pushing to sunset all CRAs. They want all plans and funds to be earmarked with plans in place and executed by October or lose the funding. This is not the first time the state has gone

after CRAs so the law may or may not pass.

Even with this caveat we do have our work cut out due to the fact even if we decided to keep the CRA we will no longer have the benefit of tax dollars from the County nor the Special Districts that include Children Services Council and the Hospital District. The amount of money in an extended CRA would only include the city tax contribution which is $15 Million annual. The one major difference in a CRA is that the Property Tax Revenue must be spent within the district and must be part of an adopted improvement plan. City powers provide a board ability to do the very same thing as CRA. The major difference is the funding is at the sole discretion of the commission at the time. The majority of our Commission supports the work of the CRA especially the Neighborhood Improvement Programs, Hurricane Shutter Program, Home Improvement Assistance, Senior Programs and Affordable Housing. At this meeting it was agreed that staff would evaluate the cost of ensuring CRA staff would be retained and they were to begin to evaluate the program’s cost as part of the city budget. We also will be keenly focused on ensuring all the Current Tax Increment Funding received is allocated and stays within our CRA without having to return our tax dollars to the county. The process will be ongoing, and everyone’s input is vital. I for one want to hear about what program residents want and need.
