Cortadito Releases

First Full-Length Album

A Captivating Musical Journey By The Award-Winning Cuban Folk Ensemble

The GuajiroTriangle signifies the cultural and musical convergence of three iconic cities: Miami, Havana and Santiago de Cuba. It’s from these vibrant locales that Cortadito, South Florida’s answer to Cuba’s Buena Vista Social Club, has drawn its inspiration – and its members. The album marks the group’s first full-length release under Afro Roots Recordings, solidifying their reputation as one of the region’s most spirited and sought-after acts. With nine original compositions, The Guajiro Triangle takes listeners on a rich, sonic journey tracing Cuban Son’s evolution – from its roots in Santiago de Cuba to its electrifying presence in Miami, with Havana serving as the essential bridge. The album opens with “Aquí Te Traigo Mi Son,” a heartfelt homage featuring celebrated Cuban Pianist and Composer Michelle Fragoso. This vibrant track paints a vivid picture of the Son’s origins in the eastern Cuban countryside, setting the stage for the rest of the album’s exploration.

Cortadito honors its Cuban heritage with powerful songs like the poignant opening single “A Yemayá,” featuring Latin GRAMMY-Winning Flutist Nestor Torres. Inspired by Yemayá, the Yoruba Orisha of the ocean, this piece offers comfort and hope in challenging times. Another standout is “Guajira en la Madrugada,” a Bolero Son collaboration with GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY Award-Winner Aymeé Nuviola, celebrating Cuba’s natural beauty.

Diverging from the group’s two previous releases, the songwriting credit is shared among Band Co-Founder Julio Cesar Rodriguez, bassist Alberto Pantaleon’s father, Alberto Pantaleon Hernandez and Vocalists Humberto Upierre and his brother, Juan Upierre and Juan Carlos Valido. The album also embraces Cortadito’s big band format, featuring a septet recording lineup that includes Co-Founder Jose Elias (tres), Rodriguez, Pantaleon,

Franklin

andTony PerigoViant (trumpet).

Love is a recurring theme throughout the album. Tracks like “Son Tus Besos,” composed by Lead Vocalist Upierre, inject infectious energy with its modern take on Cuban Son. The playful lyrics celebrate the intoxicating magic of a passionate kiss. Meanwhile, “Te Lo Perdiste” explores the bittersweet longing for missed opportunities in life and love.

Not afraid to push boundaries, Cortadito presents “Sin Fronteras,” a musical glimpse into a world without borders, a celebration of unity and the freedom to pursue one’s dreams. The album also features lively party anthems like “Son Sabroso,” which spotlights the Son’s irresistible rhythms.

Alongside powerhouse collaborations with Torres, Nuviola and Fragoso, the album also features guest artist

Alaina Martin from Los Tres de la Habana. Produced by Elias and mixed by Carlos “El Loco” Bedoya; Beyoncé, Mick Jagger, Enrique Iglesias, Guillermo Rodriguez, and Kiki Valera, with mastering by Jose Blanco; Natalia Lafourcade, Grupo Niche, Aerosmith, The Guajiro Triangle boasts an impressive creative team.

Cortadito invites listeners to embark on a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of Cuban Son. With its unique blend of tradition and innovation, this extraordinary release promises to leave audiences eager for more.

Be sure to join the celebration at the album’s release party on Sunday, May 4th, 2025, 6:00 p.m. at the Miami Beach Bandshell during the “Son Del Mundo” concert, featuring Albita, Lazaro Galaraga, DJ Le Spam and more.

You Snore? Are You Always Tired?

Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!

It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea

What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?

When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.

Can This Condition Be Treated? How?

There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

Mutra Brings A Melting Pot Of Flavors To Miami

Mutra – named for Executive Chef/ Owner Raz Shabtai’s beloved grandmother and his culinary inspiration – is now open for limited reservations at 2188 NE 123 Street. Mutra, which translates to “rain of blessings,” is an innovative dining concept from the talented Israeli-born chef featuring a menu that defies easy categorization but will tempt and intrigue palates with every bite. Featuring a farmto-table ethos based on the chef’s reverence for local farmers and purveyors, Shabtai draws from great culinary traditions from around the globe, many of which can be found in his hometown of Jerusalem. One of the world’s true melting pots, Israel is also home to the flavors and traditions these immigrants brought with them – an eclectic hub for the spices, indigenous ingredients and Old World recipes. To that end, it’s no surprise that when pressed to asked to define his cuisine, Chef Shabtai credits Levantine, Galilean/North Israel, and Baladi influences. Shabtai, whose mantra for Mutra is “food is holy,” is excited to bring these diverse flavors to Miami and add a twist to beloved dishes for savvy diners hungry for something different. Says the chef, “For Mutra, we’re taking the traditional dishes that we grew up on, food that my grandmother made and we ate as kids and making something new from it. For example, my grandmother grew up in Tunisia, where fricassee was a very popular sandwich, served on fried bread like a donut and stuffed with harissa, lemon, potatoes, tuna from the can, cooked carrots, and chopped salad. What we will do at Mutra is honor the past but cook forward, if you like. For my version of this dish, I sub in the fresh catch of the day, as we work with local fishermen, and will use special techniques to elevate it.”

Currently, Mutra is open nightly Sunday through Wednesday from 6PM to 10:30PM and until 11PM on Thursdays. Everything is made in-house in the scratch kitchen, with fresh ingredients sourced from local farms. Music is curated by Shabtai to match the cuisine, lending to an overall sensory experience. The dynamic and delectable menu is a glimpse into the chef’s creative and exuberant spirit featuring dishes such as Beet 3 Ways Salad with vegan tzatziki, pickled beets, grilled beets, ribbons of torched beets, Kalamata olives, chermoula salsa, B&W Farms tiny arugula, radish, “angel

hair” scallion, black olive powder, and candied almonds; and 1 Perfect Falafel –Falafel croquette, Tahi-amba, tomato gel, Israeli salad, zaatar, pickled red onion, and micro cilantro. There is also the ethereal Chicken Liver Dreaming to Become Foie Gras: chicken liver pate, silan date honey, crunchy shallot, pistachio crumble, cornichon, and grilled bread; 1000 Layers Steak with Tahi-amba, burn salad, Anaheim hot pepper and grilled pita; and Uzbeki Seniya – lamb kebab, Har Bracha tahini, roasted red onion, sweet harissa, amba, tomato foam and Uzbeki apricot salad.

Desserts created by Pastry Chef Stav Stephanie Hayun transport diners straight to the evocative flavors of the Middle East with dishes such as Frishman Malabi –coconut custard with rose water, pistachio crumble, rose syrup, and coconut flakes –and Katayef, a deliciously refreshing taste of Issac’s lemon gelato, caramelized nuts, sumac and simple syrup.

Chef Shabtai plans to introduce new dishes as the restaurant finds its stride, sharing a new culinary masterpiece weekly.

Spanning 2,150 square feet, with seating for 60 in a spacious dining room surrounding a big open kitchen, guests get to enjoy the action whether seated at the bar, in the dining room, or at an elegant

family-style captain’s table perfect for larger groups, nestled behind a wall.

Shabtai (40) has no formal kitchen education, learning his way by watching his grandmother – first, seated on the kitchen counter as a young boy inhaling the smells and watching her work, and then by her side as he got older – his love for her and the food and nourishment she provided one and the same. Starting as a young teenager, he has worked in every aspect of the restaurant industry, working his way up the ranks both front and back of house – dishwasher, busboy, server, cold line, hot line, bartender, and liquor salesman. That translated into high-level culinary positions in Israel and New York, – invited by Meir Adoni, a well-renowned Israeli chef, to open Nur, an instant sensation in the city’s Flatiron District in 2018, followed by stints at Alenbi, Basta, Raphael, Le Relais Jaffa and other cuttingedge restaurants between New York and Israel. A stint as a private chef, servicing well-known celebrities and high networth figures, followed and prompted a move to Miami, where Shabtai saw the food landscape as ripe for innovation. He spent a year searching for the perfect location and found it with the assistance of Noa Figari, a realtor who became so enthralled with Shabtai’s vision that she now runs the operation and business

development of Gourmet Hospitality Group, Mutra’s parent company. Another integral piece of the puzzle is Michael Werzberger, a businessman from New York who initially hired Raz as a private chef and became such a fan of his culinary creations that he decided to invest. Michael is deeply passionate about transforming the Kosher dining experience while redefining an upscale yet approachable hospitality environment.

Mutra aims to deliver an unparalleled dining experience with the freshest farmto-table ingredients. With a focus on sustainability and creativity, Mutra is where the old meets the new, creating a truly unique dining atmosphere and redefining the concept of Kosher as more about healthy eating than anything else.

The central image in the restaurant is that of Mutra herself from her wedding day. “By putting my grandmother’s name on this restaurant, I am ensuring that there is no compromise, and I must perform at my best to deliver the most incredible experience I can – to live up to her memory and her cooking.”

Mutra is located at 2188 NE 123 Street in North Miami. Reservations are encouraged and can be made through Resy. Telephone: (786) 860-1213; www.mutramiami.com; Instagram @Mutra_Miami.

Miami Gardens Native Serves Aboard Navy Warship In Norfolk

Petty Officer 2nd Class Randy Rodriguez, a native of Miami Gardens, Florida, serves aboard USS Wasp, a U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship operating out of Norfolk, Virginia.

Rodriguez graduated from Mater Academy in 2020.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Miami Gardens.

“I learned from my parents to never stop pursuing my dreams and to give 100% effort all of the time,” Rodriguez said. “Giving 100% effort is important because that is the only way you grow and not get stuck.”

Rodriguez joined the Navy four years ago. Today, Rodriguez serves as an aviation boatswain’s mate (fuel).

“I joined the Navy to travel and to do an exciting job,” Rodriguez said.

Amphibious assault ships, such as USS Wasp, project power and maintain presence by serving as the cornerstone of the Amphibious Readiness Group / Expeditionary Strike Group.

Resembling a small aircraft carrier, amphibious assault ships offer the Marine Corps with a means of ship-to-shore movement, provide humanitarian assistance and support major combat operations. More than

1,000 serve aboard USS Wasp with an additional 1,200 Marines capable of being embarked.

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.

According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’sWarfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.”

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Rodriguez has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I am most proud of making the rank and leading Sailors,” Rodriguez said. “One of my goals when I started was to become a petty officer second class and I did that in three and a half years. Advancing that fast is unusual for my community, so I am proud of the fact that I now have the opportunity to help lead junior Sailors to reach their goals.”

Rodriguez serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the

nation’s prosperity and security.

“Serving in the Navy means that I am part of something bigger than myself and that truly makes a difference to me,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.“First, I want to thank God for the life I live,” Rodriguez added. “I also want to thank my wife, Autumn Rodriguez, for always having my back and for believing in me. I want to thank my parents, Raul Rodriguez and Anaily Ulloa, as well, for giving me the values and morals I use every day in the Navy. I am grateful for my little brother, Ryan Rodriguez, for motivating me. Even though he is a lot younger than me, I know he is going places. Lastly, I want to thank the friends I work with here for helping me grow and for being there for me whenever I need them.”

CITY NEWS

April 11th, Congresswoman FredericaWilson sent a letter to the City of North Miami Beach Mayor, Michael Joseph, urging the City of North Miami Beach to keep Fluoride in its drinking water ahead of their Tuesday City Commission Meeting. See the letter below.

Last week, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson also issued her support for keeping fluoride in Miami-Dade County’s drinking water. Here is the full letter text to North Miami Beach:

Dear Mayor Joseph:

Thank you for reaching out to me regarding your concerns about the ongoing debate surrounding the Fluoridation of drinking water and its impact on children and our community as a whole. I share your concerns, and I have been—and continue to be—very vocal about the risks and potential harm that could result from removing Fluoride from our water supply.

It is truly unfortunate, and even difficult to believe, that after so many years of documented success demonstrating the positive impact of Fluoridation— including dramatic improvements in Dental Health and the prevention of childhood cavities—this issue has become politicized. Decades of scientific research have consistently shown that Fluoridation is one of the most effective and affordable public health measures. It not only protects oral health by strengthening teeth and preventing decay, but also significantly reduces other costs associated with poor Dental Health, such as the

esteem.

Together, we represent some of the largest minority communities—many of whom are either unserved or underserved and lack access to convenient, affordable Health and Dental Care. Many individuals in these communities are not adequately informed about proper oral hygiene practices and lack access to the foods, toothpaste, and mouthwash that support good oral health. Opportunities to expand education and awareness around oral health, along with increased access to community dental services, deserve our highest level of continued support.

We are fortunate to have the support of our MiamiDade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, on this important issue. The Mayor recently convened a panel of dental and medical experts who refuted claims that our water is unsafe due to Fluoridation. They strongly support the continued use of Fluoridation as a means of improving Dental Health. For the good of our entire community—especially those we serve—we, too, must stand up and make our voices heard in support of Fluoridation.

Sincerely,

CC: North Miami Beach City Commission

Congresswoman Frederica S.Wilson is an eighth-term lawmaker from Florida, representing parts of Northern

Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties. A former state legislator and lifelong educator, she founded the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, a mentoring and dropout prevention program for boys and young men of color. The Florida lawmaker sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Education and Labor Committee. She serves as the Ranking Member of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee on theTransportation and Infrastructure Committee.

An Opposing Point of View

According to Dr. John Doull, Chairman of the National Research Council’s review on Fluoride in drinking water, “We’ve gone with the status quo regarding Fluoride for many years - for too long, really - and now we need to take a fresh look. In the scientific community, people tend to think this is settled. But when we looked at the studies that have been done, we found that many of these questions are unsettled and we have much less information than we should, considering how long this has been going on.”

Commissioners in Miami-Dade voted earlier in the month to stop adjusting Fluoride levels in local drinking water, despite widespread opposition to water Fluoridation bans from national health organizations. The measure passed by an 8-2 vote, but Mayor Daniella Levine Cava vetoed legislation that would remove Fluoride from the drinking water.

A Bill currently under debate in the Florida Legislature would bar local municipalities from adding Fluoride to water.

Immersive Experiences
Live Music
Family Friendly Activities

If truth is best delivered with a laugh, then Caroline Vigneaux may well be the most honest woman in comedy today. With her one-woman show In Vigneaux Veritas, the razor-sharp former lawyer-turned-comedian brings her keen legal mind and fearless feminist voice to the stage, blending personal stories, biting social commentary, and an unapologetically French wit into an evening of intelligent hilarity.

Set to take the stage at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, May 31st, 2025, Vigneaux’s performance promises to be more than just a comedy show—it’s a reflection, a reckoning, and a riot all in one.

From the Courtroom to the Comedy Club

Caroline Vigneaux’s path to stand-up stardom is anything but conventional. For years, she worked as a lawyer, donning the robes of justice and arguing her way through the complexities of French law. But the courtroom couldn’t contain her natural charisma and irrepressible humor. Trading in legal briefs for comedy scripts, she stepped into the world of performance with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how to hold a room’s attention—and how to make it laugh.

In “In Vigneaux Veritas,” that past is not just a backdrop; it’s a driving force. Her legal expertise becomes the scaffolding for her social insights. Whether she’s taking on the absurdities of gender inequality, the historical erasure of women, or the double standards in modern relationships, Vigneaux delivers her commentary with the cool precision of an attorney—and the irreverence of a woman who has decided she’s done playing by the old rules.

Part of what makes this show so resonant is Vigneaux’s candid embrace of middle age. At what she

calls the “perfect midpoint” of life—neither young nor old—she takes the audience on a reflective journey. She jokes that while she *has* aTikTok account, she also pays someone to post on it because she hasn’t got the faintest idea how it works. It’s this kind of self-aware, no-holdsbarred humor that makes her so relatable: she’s not trying to be a 20-something influencer, and she’s not lamenting the passage of time—she’s laughing at it, and inviting us to do the same.

The show plays out like a panoramic view from the mountaintop. Vigneaux describes herself as having finished the climb: she’s seen the view, taken stock of life, and now she’s ready to start the descent—with a good dose of sarcasm and soul-searching along the way. That metaphor isn’t just poetic—it’s powerful. It frames the show as a celebration of experience, a moment of pause and power where she gets to speak with the kind of authority only earned by living fully.

Feminism, Unfiltered

Make no mistake:Vigneaux’s comedy is funny, but it’s also fierce. Her feminism is front and center, and it’s anything but polite. She tackles the patriarchy with the same strategic brilliance she once used in court, weaving in historical references, legal logic, and personal anecdotes to highlight how far society still has to go—and how women continue to bear the brunt of inequality.

But there’s no finger-wagging here. Vigneaux’s gift is in making her audience laugh while simultaneously making them think. One moment, she’s reenacting a surreal courtroom scene where history has to defend itself for forgetting women. The next, she’s musing on motherhood, menopause, or the madness of modern dating. Her topics are broad, but her perspective is laser-

focused: this is what it’s like to be a woman who has stopped asking for permission—and started writing her own rules.

For those unfamiliar with Vigneaux’s work, In VigneauxVeritas is the perfect introduction. Her storytelling is tight, her energy electric, and her presence magnetic.Whether you’re there for the laughs, the insights, or the sheer joy of watching someone command the stage with intelligence and charm, this show delivers.

At a time when comedy often feels either too safe or too divisive, Vigneaux finds the sweet spot. She’s bold without being brash, incisive without being preachy. You don’t need to be a feminist, a lawyer, or even a woman to enjoy her show—but by the end of it, you might leave just a little more aware, and a lot more entertained.

Catch Caroline Vigneaux in *In Vigneaux Veritas* for one night only at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, May 31st, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. Come for the comedy—stay for the truth.

Tickets to all shows are on sale now. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. In Vigneaux’s world, the verdict is clear: laughter is justice, and she’s serving it up with style.

BarkBash 2025: Paws, Parades & Puppy Love - Saturday May 3rd – Sunday, May 4th

Calling all dog lovers: The Berry Farm is going to the dogs in the best possible way. For the first time ever, the farm is rolling out the green carpet for its inaugural BarkBash, a two-day celebration for pups and their people that promises tail wags, treats and a whole lot of adorable antics.

Set against a backdrop of radiant sunflower fields—peak bloom expected!— BarkBash invites guests to bring their furry companions along for the fun. And this isn’t just your average “dogs welcome” kind of event. The Berry Farm team has gone all out with a full schedule of pet-centric programming. Expect to see the cutest Pet Parade in town, where pups can strut their stuff in costume or au naturel, followed by a Best Dressed Contest sure to melt hearts.

But the highlight for many might just be the Dance Paw-ty, an open-air, musicfilled mini rave for dogs and owners alike. Think pet-friendly beats, bubbles and lots of bouncing tails. There’s even a Barks & Bubbles Hour, where doggie mocktails and human refreshments, of course; set the tone for a relaxed afternoon in the sun.

Treat your good boy or girl to a frozen Pup Cup, or splurge on one of the farm’s thoughtfully curated Puppy Packages, filled with toys, treats, and keepsakes.
