BCT’s Holiday Highlights
The holiday season in South Florida is a vibrant tapestry of joy, community, and unforgettable experiences. From dazzling parades to lively park celebrations, December offers a wealth of events designed to bring holiday cheer to residents and visitors alike.
Recently, thousands gathered for the 68th annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade. This beloved tradition brought families, locals, and visitors together to stroll along the Broadwalk and immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the season. Adding to the festive atmosphere, a specially decorated Broward County Transit (BCT) bus made its debut, delighting spectators with its vibrant holiday design and showcasing the community spirit that makes South Florida so special.
The celebrations continued at Light Up Carter Park, where the community gathered for a family-friendly evening filled with live music, bounce houses, and festive crafts. The beautifully lit Carter Park HolidayTree stood as a beacon of the season. BCT’s wrapped bus added to the enchantment, serving as both a festive centerpiece and a reminder of the agency’s role in connecting people to unforgettable experiences.
Capping off the holiday magic, the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade took to the waterways, showcasing 100 illuminated vessels in a breathtaking display of holiday creativity. Among the standout entries was BCT’s holidaythemed boat, a stunning tribute to the season. Built on a pontoon provided by Broward County Parks and Recreation, the boat featured a perfectly replicated bus structure fully wrapped in vibrant holiday artwork. It was adorned with LED light strips that illuminated its shape and interior in radiant Christmas colors, while LED reflectors at the front and back lit up
the path ahead. Adding to the charming realism, the boat included a pair of customized STOP lights and whimsical festive accents. The event’s TV commentary captured the significance of the moment: Broward County Transit’s participation brings the heartbeat of our community to life, showcasing the vital role transportation plays in connecting people and places. The boat’s dazzling presence high-
lighted BCT’s commitment to innovation, community, and connection, leaving a lasting impression on thousands of spectators. Across all three events, BCT celebrated the holidays and highlighted its
dedication to community service and accessibility. The agency’s participation demonstrated its ability to be more than just a transit service—it symbolized togetherness, joy, and shared experiences.

I am always eager to program unexpected and exciting works, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to present this unique adaptation, one of our boldest and most ambitious premieres since Porgy and Bess, to our South Florida audiences. Buckle up because we are all in for one heck of a ride.”
From the over-the-top heights of Cunegonde’s “Glitter and Be Gay” and the rarely heard comedic duet “We Are Women” to the stirring depths of Candide’s introspective ponderings, audiences will enjoy a provocative perspective on life’s absurdities and the enduring pursuit of optimism.
Adding allure to the premiere evening on January 16th at Broward Center, Symphony patrons are invited to attend the “Glitter and Be Gay Gala” 2025.The separately ticketed formal gala evening (held prior to the performance), recognizing community leaders and supporting SFSO’s impactful artistic, educational, and community outreach initiatives, begins at 5:00 p.m. and includes bubbles and hors d’oeuvres on the Wendt Terraces, a multi-course dinner in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom, the Candide performance and dancing dessert and dancing with the artists postperformance in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom. Old Lisbon Unveils New Aventura Location
A Generational Legacy Of Portuguese Culinary Tradition
Old Lisbon, Miami’s beloved destination for authentic Portuguese cuisine, proudly announces the opening of its newest location in Aventura. This 2,500 Square-Foot Restaurant elevates the dining experience, blending Portuguese tradition with modern elegance, while continuing the brand’s commitment to bringing the rich flavors of Portugal to South Florida. With a thoughtfully designed space that honors Portugal’s cultural heritage and a carefully curated menu, Old Lisbon Aventura sets a new standard for fine Portuguese dining.
Old Lisbon’s story is as rich as its cuisine. When Founder Carlos Silva arrived in Miami from his native Portugal in 1991, his journey with Old Lisbon began in the most serendipitous of ways. Silva, eager to connect with his roots, stumbled upon a Portuguese restaurant preparing for its grand opening. Unable to contain his excitement, he knocked on the door and was greeted by the owner, who graciously offered a preview of the menu. Silva’s first meal—a perfectly Grilled Bacalhau paired with Vinho Verde—left a lasting impression. He became Old Lisbon’s very first customer, paying twenty dollars for a meal that would eventually shape his destiny. A few years later, Carlos Silva became the owner of Old Lisbon, transforming it into the iconic Portuguese fine dining restaurant chain it is today, with three prominent locations across South Florida. Now, the Aventura location marks the next chapter in this legacy as Silva’s son, Carlos Silva Jr., takes the reins to lead this newest expansion. Carlos Jr.’s involvement marks the beginning of a new era for Old Lisbon, ensuring that the family’s passion for Portuguese cuisine continues to thrive for generations to come.
“We’ve been honored to serve the South Florida community for over three decades,” said Carlos Silva. “With my son, Carlos Jr., taking on the Aventura location, it’s a proud moment to see this legacy grow into a true family business, ensuring the future of Old Lisbon remains rooted in tradition but flourishes with new ideas.”
Old Lisbon Aventura brings the heart of Portuguese cuisine to life with a menu that celebrates the best of both sea and land. Standout dishes include: Bolinhos de Bacalhau (Codfish Croquettes with Black-Eyed Peas), the Fiery Chouriço
dishes like Camarão Ao Alho ou com Molho Picante (Grilled Shrimp with Garlic or homemade spicy sauce) and Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (Clams in aWhiteWine and Lime Consommé) offer a true taste of coastal Portugal. Hearty dishes such as the Bife à Old Lisbon (NY Strip Steak topped with a Fried Egg) and Carré de Cordeiro (Rack of Lamb with Broccolini and Punched Potatoes) reflect Portugal’s land-based culinary traditions.
In addition to its core menu, the Aventura location offers a special lunch menu available from Monday through Friday, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., featuring classics like Salada Portuguesa com Atum (Tuna Salad with Mixed Greens, Tomatoes, and Boiled Eggs) and Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (Shredded Codfish with Onions, Boiled Eggs, and Potatoes). For a more relaxed dining experience, guests can indulge in Happy Hour, available Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., featuring savory bites like
traditional Portuguese desserts like Pasteis de Nata (Custard Tarts with Cinnamon) and the rich Delicia de Fátima (a custard-based dessert with cream and Maria cookies).
Designed by architect Ricardo Azevedo, the new Aventura location marries modern elegance with timeless Portuguese aesthetics. The interior features hand-painted columns, a six-seat marble-topped bar, and an intimate dining room that seats 64 guests inside and 28 outside. The décor includes custommade plateware, Portuguese chairs, and hand-painted mosaics, all imported from Portugal, adding to the authenticity of the experience.
At the heart of the restaurant stands a 120-year-old olive tree, “Oliveira,” symbolizing the longevity and tradition that Old Lisbon represents. It greets diners as they walk in, reminding them of the deeprooted history behind every dish. Complementing this environment is a
ing the dining experience with melodies that reflect the soul of Portugal.
dise, the restaurant also boasts Florida’s most extensive selection of Portuguese Wines, offering guests an exceptional opportunity to savor the finest wines from Portugal’s renowned vineyards.
Each wine is carefully selected and stored in their floor to ceiling wine cellar.
As Old Lisbon enters this new chapter, the Aventura location not only reflects the growth of the restaurant but also the continuation of a family legacy. With Carlos Silva Jr. taking the helm, the Silva family is ensuring that Old Lisbon remains a generational restaurant, preserving the authentic flavors of Portugal for years to come. Whether you’re seeking a quiet meal with family or a venue for special occasions, Old Lisbon Aventura offers an experience that blends tradition with modern sophistication.

You Snore?
Are You Always Tired?
Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!
It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea
What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?
When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.
Can This Condition Be Treated? How?
There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine
Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

Florida’s Most ‘Sustainable Suburb’
Coral Gables Is Crowned As having The Most Eco-Friendly Vibes
As eco-conscious living becomes a growing priority for Americans, many are finding innovative ways to embrace sustainability - from adopting solar energy and eco-friendly transportation to investing in sustainable landscaping. However, some places are better suited for green living than others. While studies often focus on the greenest cities, Solar Insure, a solar and battery warranty provider, turned its attention to the suburbs--the epicenter of residential life--to uncover where sustainable lifestyles truly flourish.

Preserving The Past For A New Generation
Independent Filmmaker Starts Nonprofit Organization To Create Documentaries Which Tells Stories Of The Holocaust
Their Stories Foundation is a new NonProfit Organization founded by independent filmmaker, John Rokosny. The organization’s mission is to create films that tell stories of the Holocaust and related topics, and to educate future generations about this traumatic time in our history. The rise in Antisemitism is a motivating factor for the formation of Their Stories Foundation. “We’ve interviewed over 40 Holocaust survivors in the past year, and let me tell you, they are being retraumatized by recent events. It’s really sad,” says director John Rokosny. “We want to honor the survivors—and those who didn’t survive—with our films, and to share their stories with new generations.”
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported record-breaking levels of Antisemitic incidents in 2023, with over 8,800 recorded cases of harassment, vandalism, and assault—a 140% increase compared to 2022.
Teaching the history of the Holocaust combats denial and distortion. Without education, future generations may misunderstand or even dismiss the events entirely. This education strengthens the global movement for human rights by showcasing the devastating impact of their violation. It serves as a foundation for advocating tolerance, justice, and equality.
“This mission started 8 years ago with a chance meeting with Holocaust survivor Hanka Neiger Ablin on the Lower East Side of Manhattan,” says Rokosny. “Hanka talked and we listened.” “We” being Rokosny and his partner Andriette Redmann, who works as a lead interviewer and producing partner on the films created byTheir Stories Foundation.
This chance conversation evolved into a feature documentary called “They Survived Together.” The film went on to air on PBS and won an Emmy Award for Best Historical Documentary.
“So many meaningful experiences came from that film. We had premieres at the Museum of Tolerance in LA, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC, Miami and Chicago Jewish Film Festivals, and in many others. “We’ve met so many survivors and survivors’ children and grandchildren, and people who care about the most tragic and monumental event in history,” added Rokosny.
“They Survived Together” caught the eye of The Shoah Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg, who brought in Rokosny and Redmann to conduct interviews of
ple and family foundations to support the work financially,” added Rokosny. “We
