Teacher Seeks Community Support
“I like helping people, and I want to continue helping people.” Dustin Hurtt
As we enter the holiday season, a time for generosity and giving back, one Miami resident who has dedicated his career to transforming lives is now facing the battle of his own life. Dustin Hurtt, a beloved member of the Miami community and a passionate teacher of web development and software engineering, is fighting aggressive Cancer and is reaching out for support during this challenging time. Dustin, who has helped countless individuals change their lives and careers through his work as a former teacher at Ironhack, underwent a Pneumonectomy (Lung Removal Surgery) at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City earlier this year. Although initially thought to have removed all detectable Cancerous Tissues, his Oncologist at Mount Sinai has since discovered that a small amount of Cancer remains, necessitating innovative and

The boat’s dazzling presence highlighted BCT’s commitment to innovation, community, and connection, leaving a lasting impression on thousands of spectators. Across all three events, BCT celebrated the holidays and highlighted its dedication to community service and accessibility. The agency’s participation demonstrated its ability to be more than just a transit service—it symbolized togetherness, joy, and shared experiences.

POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance
Teams Up with Crayola Experience for Exciting New Family Entertainment
Sharon Wagner)
(By
Last year, South Florida was treated to the world premiere of POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance—an enchanting live holiday stage show and immersive experience at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, FL.
For those lucky enough to attend, it was a magical fusion of music, circus arts, stagecraft and pure imagination, all inspired by the beloved holiday storybook by Broadway director and entertainment visionary Neil Goldberg.
This year, Goldberg brought his holiday magic to Orlando, teaming up with Crayola Experience for a vibrant new adventure.
As part of Crayola’s annual Colorful Christmas celebration, POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance added an extra layer of enchantment to the festivities, drawing inspiration from the storybook series, their new Holiday Television special, and the live show.
With kids and grandkids in tow—ranging in age from 2 to 13—we headed to Orlando to experience the magic firsthand. When we arrived at the impressive Crayola Experience, we were greeted by a line out the door, a good sign that something special was underway.
Though we hadn’t visited this attraction before, we were excited to see how POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance would blend into the Crayola world of color and creativity.
From the moment we entered, it was clear this would be an unforgettable experience. Crayola Experience is a one-of-akind family destination, boasting over 25 creative activities across 70,000 square feet of color.
The space is designed to inspire both kids and adults, encouraging exploration through art, technology, and creativity. But the integration of POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance took everything to the next level.
The magic of POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance infused every moment of the experience. We were treated to a vibrant Magical Circus Adventure, blending acrobatic feats with enchanting storybook readings that captivated both children and adults. An interactive magic show mesmerized the crowd, while a parade of costumed characters from the storybook roamed the space, delighting kids with playful interactions, photo opportunities, and storytelling sessions. Everything happened multiple times throughout the day.
Everywhere we looked, there were colorful jugglers, plate-spinners, strolling magicians, and performers full of personality and charm. Characters like snowmen, toy soldiers, wizards and whimsical sprites brought the book’s pages to life with stunning attention to detail in their wildly imaginative costumes and makeup.
Some of these familiar performers returned from last year’s show, but the creative team behind POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance has clearly raised the bar, continuing to elevate this already magical experience.
Our favorite new character was RoboClaus™, a cutting-edge 6-foot robotic Santa who wowed the crowd with his modern twist on the holiday icon. Kids (and adults) couldn’t get enough of him, lining up for a chance to take photos with this high-tech Santa.
POMP proclaimed RoboClaus™ was created to help Santa grant Christmas wishes
seemed to be thousands of visitors, and some of the lines were long, but the characters entertained the lines which moved quickly and were well worth the wait. The kids also got to enjoy a Kidz Wigz salon, where they could dress up as their favorite POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance characters. After choosing their favorite crayon color, they personalized labels with their characters’ names and took part in coloring stations, picking from thousands of Crayola crayons to create their own artistic storybook masterpieces. I had the opportunity to chat with Neil Goldberg, who shared his excitement about the collaboration. “Crayola’s pre-
ful magic of the holiday season, entertains everyone and creates memories that will last a lifetime.”
For those in South Florida, there’s still more POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance fun to be had. On Saturday, December 21, IT’SUGAR, one of the world’s largest specialty candy retailers, continues partnering with POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance to present a special holiday celebration at their Bayside Marketplace flagship store in Miami from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The free event will feature a POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance storybook reading, a live circus performance, the book’s colorful characters, a chance to meet
YouTube, offering a 30-minute dose of their holiday magic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev-g9kweFZM&t=9s Looking ahead, Goldberg revealed that POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance will continue to grow, with more partnerships, live shows, location-based entertainment, products and exciting collaborations on the horizon. It’s clear that the immersive and entertaining world of POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance is just getting started— and we can’t wait to see where it goes next.

Alleviate The Burden
Treating Type 1 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease Has
While diabetes gets a lot of attention, people with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) are frequently overlooked when drug companies develop new medications.
“People with T1D and chronic kidney disease, or CKD, face significantly higher risks of morbidity and mortality if they are unable to control their blood sugar levels,” said Steve Edelman, MD, an endocrinologist and the founder and director of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating and motivating people living with diabetes. “They are challenged to do this relying solely on insulin, which is extremely difficult and is the principal therapy for people with T1D.”
An estimated 1.7 million adult Americans have T1D, with approximately 21%, or 360,000, also affected by CKD, according to the CDC National Diabetes Statistics Report 2024. Without effective
glycemic control (managing blood sugar) and other important preventative measures, patients with T1D are at a 10 times higher risk of cardiovascular disease, a six-fold greater risk of progression to endstage kidney disease, a four times greater risk of heart failure and a 2-5 times greater risk of all-cause mortality.
Consider this information to better understand the challenges and risks of complications these patients face.
Challenges with Current Treatments Impact Patients’ Ability to Reach Glycemic Goals
Diabetes management aims to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, retinopathy, neuropathy and other complications, in part by improving glycemic control while minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia.
Currently, Americans with T1D have limited therapeutic options, relying almost exclusively on insulin. There are no oral
agents to improve glycemia in adults with T1D. Despite advances in insulin therapy and glucose monitoring, most people with T1D do not meet glycemic control target levels with insulin alone. One measure of glycemic control is a number known as A1C, which is a measure of glucose control over the past 2-3 months.
The goal is to help patients achieve the guideline-recommended target of an A1C below 7% and improve their time-inrange, which represents an established metric that translates into clinically meaningful benefits for patients.
Reaching Glycemic Goals Are Key to Reducing Risk of Further Complications
By achieving glycemic control, kidney function can be stabilized, long-term disease progression mitigated and the morbidity and mortality that the cardiorenal burden puts on patients with T1D and CKD reduced.
Today, it is estimated only 23% of people with T1D achieve an A1C of less than 7%, according to research from the American Diabetes Association, and about 50% have an A1C greater than 8%. Patients who do not achieve A1C targets remain at significantly greater risk of complications associated with their condition.
“Relying solely on insulin can negatively affect a patient’s glucose control and quality of life,” said Dr. Edelman. “Doctors and patients need an oral agent to improve glycemic control in people with T1D and CKD. Therefore, we need therapeutic options that improve glycemic control and reduce their risk of kidney disease progression and cardiovascular comorbidities.”

True Holiday Spirit
The Impact of Giving Isn’t Limited to Just the Holiday Season
By Bryan Golden
Among other things, the holidays are a time of giving and receiving gifts. The question most often asked of people is, “what did you get?” Much less frequently asked is, “what did you give?” Invariably, the inquiries concern material gifts. Purchasing a gift can certainly be thoughtful and a wonderful gesture, especially when it’s backed up by your actions. However, the most valuable presents are those that aren’t sold in stores. When you give your love, your time, help someone in need, aid another in solving a problem or overcoming an obstacle, you give something priceless.
The true spirit of the holidays is giving. When you give, you receive. You can get anything in life you want by helping enough others get what they want. But only if you give without expecting anything in return. The impact of giving isn’t limited to just the holiday season, it’s
something that has value all year.
The power of giving is often underestimated. When you give unconditionally, you don’t just impact the recipient; you start a chain reaction. By brightening the life of one person you also affect all those who they then touch.
No gesture of giving or kindness is too small. Holding the door open at a store, helping someone carry groceries to their car, letting another car in front of you, saying please and thank you, and saying hello to a stranger you pass on the sidewalk, are some of the many things you can do daily.
For family and friends, your time is one of the most precious gifts you can offer. Are you there for others when they need you? Do you offer a hand without being asked? Do you help out when asked? Too often, people get caught up in their own desires, thus losing sight of the needs of others. A person who tries to get
through life by looking out for himself or herself first is invariably frustrated. Often this person views life as a competition to determine who can accumulate more.
On the other hand, those who are concerned for the wellbeing of others are happier, more content, and more satisfied. By giving without expecting, they in turn receive the things they need.
Giving is a simple concept that works every time it is applied. There will be people who don’t appreciate what you do, but it doesn’t matter. You are giving without anticipating anything in return. Besides, there will be many more who are thankful for your efforts.
If you don’t treat others well, buying a gift won’t compensate for your behavior. The recipient might like what you give them but it won’t make up for your actions. You can’t bribe someone to forgive the way you treat them with a present.
The best gift you can receive is the joy of making someone else happy. Being unselfish is a wonderful way to live. When you give with no ulterior motives, your actions are seen as genuine. Should you expect something in return, your behavior is always suspect. We all know people who do nice things only when they want something in return. Make giving a daily routine. Don’t start and end with the holiday season. Every day is a good day to do something nice. When people feel good due to your actions, you can’t help but feel happy yourself. And that is priceless. The most significant action you can take is having a positive impact on the lives of others.

Office Party Pitfalls
The Worst Holiday Party Mistakes
Revealed By Florida Office Managers
Holiday parties are a festive highlight of the work calendar - but they can also be a professional minefield. It’s the one night when questionable dance moves, overshared gossip, and a little too much eggnog can collide in full view of your colleagues - and, worse, your boss. While these celebrations are meant to bring teams together, they can sometimes lead to career-damaging moments that overshadow years of hard work. The career experts at resume.io ran a survey (3,000) of managers in Florida to uncover the most memorable mistakes they’ve witnessed in office parties across the Sunshine State.
The top 15 worst party pitfalls among Americans are:
#1 Drinking Too Much Booze
Overindulging in alcohol is a classic party misstep, say managers. Slurred speeches, embarrassing confessions, or even a stumble into the Christmas tree can leave lasting impressions - and not the good kind.
#2 Not Showing Up
Skipping the party altogether can come off as aloof or disengaged. Managers often notice who makes the effort, and an absence could send the wrong message about your team spirit.
#3 Flirting with Co-Workers
What might feel like harmless banter after a few drinks could easily cross professional boundaries. Awkward Monday morning meetings or whispers around the office aren’t worth the fleeting thrill.
#4 Oversharing Personal Gossip
Revealing too much about your private life—or someone else’s—can quickly backfire. “Remember, the office party is
not a confessional booth, and trust is hard to rebuild,” says Amanda Augustine, career expert at resume.io.
#5 Bringing Leftovers Home
Yes, the food is free, but loading up Tupperware for the week ahead sends a message that’s more “desperate” than “resourceful.” Enjoy the buffet, but leave some for everyone else.
#6 Inappropriate Dancing Managers cited inappropriate dancing as the sixth biggest party pitfall. The dance floor is no place to unleash moves better suited to a nightclub. “Keep it light and fun—no one wants to become the star of the office party’s viral video,” she continues.
#7 Bringing an Uninvited Plus-One
Arriving with a surprise guest can create logistical headaches for organizers and awkwardness for the group. Always respect the invite’s parameters.
#8 Unfiltered Opinions
A few glasses of wine can loosen tongues, but airing grievances about the company, coworkers, or even the boss is a fast track to career trouble. “Stick to neutral or positive topics,” advises Augustine.
#9 Gift-Giving Fails
Whether it’s a thoughtless Secret Santa gift or something wildly inappropriate, gift blunders are hard to forget. Aim for something simple and workplaceappropriate.
#10 Social Media Missteps
The 10th biggest festive fumble is posting unflattering photos or videos from the event—it can damage reputations— not just yours but also your colleagues.
NOTICE OF PUBLIC SALE
“Always think before you tag,” warns Augustine.
#11 Aggressive Networking
While it’s great to connect, monopolizing a senior manager’s time with career ambitions can come off as pushy. Save those conversations for a formal meeting, not the dance floor.
#12 Disrupting the Speech
Heckling the boss during their toast or making loud side comments can turn you into the office Grinch. Augustine suggests remaining “respectful and attentive during every company speech or presentation— no matter where they are held.”
#13 Cliquey Behavior
Try mingling with different colleagues throughout the night rather than staying with your usual work group. It’s a great chance to get to know people from other teams and helps everyone feel included in the celebration.
#14 Wardrobe Malfunctions
A too-tight outfit, overly casual attire, or a malfunctioning zipper can quickly overshadow your professionalism. “Aim for festive but appropriate attire that won’t cause distractions,” says Augustine.
#15 Winning Ugly
Finally, and in 15th place, whether it’s a raffle, trivia contest, or party game, or gloating about a victory can dampen the festive mood. Celebrate gracefully or lose with humor.
In addition to identifying the top 15 career crashers, resume.io’s survey shed light on the dynamics of office holiday parties - from themes that spark the most mischief to the best ways to bounce back after a party blunder.
Here’s what managers revealed:
The Mischief-Making Power of Themes
The format and theme of holiday parties play a significant role in how events unfold. Unsurprisingly, holiday parties with open bars are the most likely to encourage mischief, with 72% of managers cit-
ing this setup as the biggest culprit. Comparatively, ugly sweater contests (9%), karaoke nights (9%), and game nights (10%) lead to significantly less chaos.
Awkward Conversations Overheard
Holiday parties may bring people together, but they can also create conversational minefields. Managers shared the most uncomfortable topics overheard at office parties:
• Inappropriate personal stories: 36%
• Politics or religion: 23%
• Office gossip: 21%
• Complaints about the company: 20%
Redeeming Yourself After a Blunder
If you find yourself guilty of a party faux pas, the managers surveyed identified the most effective ways to recover:
• Apologize to the affected parties: 59%
• Make light of it with humor: 20%
• Pretend it didn’t happen: 13%
• Volunteer to plan the next party: 8%
Memorable Moments That Last Not all party moments are careerending; some activities lead to positive and lasting memories:
• Group games or competitions: 35%
• A lively dance floor: 23%
• Karaoke performances: 26%
• Speeches or awards: 17%
Avoiding Career-Ending Mistakes
When it comes to steering clear of trouble, the most popular strategies include:
• Sticking to one or two drinks max: 38%
• Focusing on enjoying the event without overthinking: 34%
• Avoiding controversial topics: 29%
Augustine adds: “Holiday parties are a great time to unwind with coworkers, but keep in mind that people will remember how you acted. You can have a good time while still maintaining your professional reputation—it’s all about finding the right balance.”

A Season Of Visionary Leadership At The Sterling Aventura Introducing Kristin Landahl, Executive Director and Community Servant
By: Joyce R. Forchion
“When you find a good person, you find someone with a great heart.”
Community service and heartfelt benevolence have centered the staff at The Sterling Aventura based on the diligent leadership of Kristin Landahl, the Executive Director since November 2023. Her love for seniors is reflected in her advocacy for strategic elder care and memory preservation. The holiday season punctuates a year that brought forth countless accolades and goal attainment for the executive team in 2024. This past November, residents and staff from The Sterling Aventura assembled to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association - Southeast Florida Chapter’s 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Nova Southeastern University. They proved victorious in exceeding their $2,500 fundraising goal by raising $5,300 during the Broward County 5K.
“The Sterling Aventura has been part of the Aventura community for over 20 years,” Landahl said. “After running multiple senior living communities in the Midwest and around the country, I must admit that there is a particular heart and passion in Aventura that is undeniable. The employees possess a sense of kindness that you can feel once you walk through our doors, which permeates through our community. The generosity is unmatched, and we hope to share the spirit of giving with even more residents, visitors, and partners.”
A sought-after five-star, resort-style senior residential community, The Sterling Aventura was recently named among the
nation’s best senior living facilities for 2024 by U.S. News & World Report. In 2023, Life Care Services– the center’s management company– became J.D. Power’s Most Awarded Brand in the history of its Senior Living Satisfaction Survey after ranking first in customer satisfaction for five consecutive years in the Independent Living category. Additionally, the company received the 2023 Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award for remarkable employee culture and engagement.
An accomplished elder care executive and seasoned business owner, Landahl has spent a little over a year at The Sterling Aventura while serving as the Executive Director for Life Care Services for the past 8 years. She obtained an undergraduate degree in sociology, with an emphasis on gerontology, from Illinois State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix. Her certifications include a green belt in process improvement in DMAIC/Lean/Six Sigma, Certified Dementia Practitioner, and Certified Director of Assisted Living. Her passion lies within her devotion to curating an assisted living community that honors the triumph of the human spirit during the most vulnerable stages of life.
“We’re laser-focused on promoting failure-free days for all the residents in order to keep them independent for as long as possible,” said Landahl. “Our team-building philosophy represents a Heart-Health Connection, and 24-hour brain stimulation, all to ensure that our residents make the best decisions to
benefit their quality of life. By using the Health and Wellness Navigation Program – along with Partnerships for Care – we assist residents in upholding selfsufficiency by working with Absolute Home Care, SOBE Rehab, and the Alzheimer’s Association.”
Residents of The Sterling Aventura benefit from a multitude of resources that enable accessible counsel and socialization, such as support groups, professional networking seminars, and international appreciation days. Landahl and her team have also assigned a social worker to visit the property to help seniors grapple with feelings associated with transition, loss, and so much more.
“Our primary program is called the 8 Dimensions of Health and Wellness, which focuses on the different levels of wellbeing for our residents,” she said. “We capture the following tenets of health: physical/exercise, emotional/support groups, environmental exposure, spiritual enlightenment, vocational support, social activities, intellectual /mental stimulation, and health services.”
Landahl and her team are uniquely positioned to reach new heights in 2025.
“Next year, we will be prepared to expand our mark of excellence in dining services while growing our clinical team, as we continue to assist our residents in embracing our signature programs and service offerings,” she said. “Plus, we will be starting an internal Management Training Program designed to empower our contributing staff to become the best leaders and community servants possible.
This past year has been incredible, and
we thank the 911 Response Team, EMT Support Network, and Aventura Police Department for its caring collaboration with our staff and incredible reliability.” On a larger scale, Landahl hopes to contribute to the national dialogue surrounding elder care and hospice services to prepare families for the inevitable realities of life. “We need to initiate frank conversations centered on hospice and end-of-life care. Our team at The Sterling Aventura aim to erase the negative connotation by redefining hospice as a resource of preparedness and prevention, forging a harmonious and comforting collaboration between families and healthcare practitioners,” she said. “Hospice provides a beautiful form of support to individuals without stripping away their identity and dignity, so we plan to enhance our in-house clinical offerings and support end-of-life care by taking our services to the next level. We realize that we have the only assisted living community in the area that leads families through end-of-life planning, so we hope to pioneer programs where seniors can stay in their homes– or age in place-while enjoying comfortable surroundings and familiar faces. The key is to end the merry-go-round and provide comprehensive strategies that specifically cater to the needs of our residents.”
The Sterling Aventura strives to provide the most commendable, socially responsible service culture in the industry. For more info on the senior residential community or to schedule a walking tour of the property, visit: www.thesterlingaventura.com

New Year, New Goals For People And Pets
3 Ways Dogs And Dog Owners Can Accomplish
A new year brings fresh opportunities for a lifestyle reboot, and as you set health goals for 2025, remember that your pet can embark on the journey to healthier living right along beside you. Whether you’re aiming to eat better, exercise more or find peace of mind, one of the best strategies for success is the buddy system - and your pet might be the perfect partner.
Consider these three ways you and your pet can work toward healthy habits together this year.
Exercise: Many people find it challenging to stick to a gym routine and get the most out of that membership. However, there are countless ways to get exercise without
relying on fancy gym equipment and working out at home means you can include your pet in the fun too. Even a simple walk or jog with your dog can be essential for vitality and well-being.
When you’re feeling ready for more adventure, head to a local park or hit the trails for an extra challenge. To keep things fun, try a game of fetch in the backyard or visit a dog park to add variety to your routines.
Diet: Eating real, recognizable and nutritious foods is essential for both humans and pets. An option like Nature’s Recipe delivers premium, natural nutrition with added vitamins, minerals and nutrients for pets at every life stage. With more than 40 years of expertise, its dog food recipes
are inspired by nature and designed for dedicated pet parents who demand the best in nutrition.
“We’re committed to our promise that every ingredient counts,” said Dr. Preston Buff, Principal Scientist, Nutrition and Animal Safety, Post Consumer Brands and Nature’s Recipe’s Pet Nutritionist.
“Pet parents can trust we use only the best to fuel their dog’s health and happiness. By focusing on premium ingredients that promote vitality, Nature’s Recipe empowers dog owners to invest in their pet’s health. We aim to recognize and delight pet parents who dive into ‘research mode’ and want healthy, nutrient-rich recipes.”
Emotional Serenity: Quality time with pets
has been shown to lower cortisol levels in humans, helping to promote calm and wellness, according to the National Institutes of Health. Whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood, playing in the backyard, a gentle grooming session or simply offering the occasional belly rub, spending time with your pet can bring a sense of peace and well-being.
As you and your pet journey together toward a healthier lifestyle in 2025, remember the path to healthy living is even more rewarding when traveled with a buddy. Tis The Season For Holiday Safety & Fun
The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and warmth. Families gather around festive decorations, twinkling lights, and the comforting glow of candles and fireplaces. It’s fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls this holiday season, the Department of Fire Rescue & Beach Safety has some tips to ensure your holidays are not only festive but also fire-safe.
Candle Caution: Almost half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles, with Christmas Day as the peak day for candle fires. Think about using battery-operated flameless candles. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns.
Mindful Lighting: Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs, or any signs of damage before hanging them. Replace damaged lights immediately. Be sure to turn off holiday lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house. Consider using a timer to automate this process, ensuring your home is not unnecessarily exposed to electrical risks. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.
Tree Safety: A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast. Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. Also, make sure your tree does not block exits. More than one in every five Christmas tree fires were caused by a heat source too close to the tree. Get rid of your tree after Christmas or when it is dry. (See below for tree recycling locations in Hollywood).
For more information on how to prevent winter fires, visit: usfa.fema.gov/holiday and nfpa.org/winter

Celebrating Hallandale Beach’s Finest & Our Hometown Hero Chief Michel Michel
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
This week I had a wonderful opportunity to attend the “Friends of Foster” Police Appreciation Day. The Friends of Foster are continuing a long history at Foster Park. Back in the days, way before I moved here in 1991, Foster Park was the gathering place for residents. It was the northwest neighborhood park. The people made the park. It was very run down by the time I became acquainted with the location. I remember back when I first moved to Hallandale Beach how neglected the area was. Foster Park had a broken basketball court with a rundown chain hoop, cracked pavement and faded lines. The building itself had to be all of forty by forty at best. Inside there were some historic pictures, an old upright piano, and a mixed match of tables and chairs. If you wanted to use the restroom, it was just that one bathroom.
I came to know Foster as the meeting place of the Northwest Civic Association after being invited to meet the residents and listen to hear about their concerns. It was more than that though. It was the place for the seniors to meet. The elders gathered to play cards, bingo or simply to talk about the local gossip or what needed to be changed. They felt unheard.
Certainly, I listened. Moving back here, I understood the huge contrast of the segregated east and west. It pained me to truly see what the other side of the tracks meant, the lack of investment in the neighborhood and sadly the frustration of not having great parks resonated. It was not that just the Northwest was lacking in investment, the entire city had a rundown park system. My goal was to change that.
Thanks to the HBCRA we had the financial tool to make sure every park in the Northwest was made over. Foster Park, BF James Park, and the Hepburn Center at OB Johnson Park. We collaborated with the community and developed the Master Plan for the community. This meant tearing the old Foster Park to the ground. It also meant that the seniors would lose their home away from home.
During the planning, we made sure that an agreement with the seniors would be memorialized. The Friends of Foster would always have their home, and they could meet at Foster Park for free. As with many organizations there are changes. Many of the elderly have passed away or moved but some remain. They along with the new elders aka seniors sixty and older are revitalizing the community spirit.
There was a bump in the road when it came to Foster. We built a beautiful facility but with regentrification, budget cuts and COVID-19 the facility sat empty. We tried to put out a request for proposal to provide programming at the center. The RFP failed to receive any viable proposal.
Originally PAL wanted to submit a proposal but was unable as they were an independent board that received funding from the city. I fought alongside like minded advocates and the PAL Board to allow them the opportunity, finally they were able to execute an agreement and run their program from the building. There was a major glitch in the agreement, PAL could not sublease any portion of the building, nor could they rent it out for revenue as a fund stream for PAL.
But what about Friends? This is where history and knowledge matter. I informed the City Manager of the agreement that the Friends could utilize that building for their meetings. It was a win -win. Friends now had access to their forever home and PAL had a new partner. They have been meeting and as a thank you they hosted this wonderful event in thanks.
While this old partnership is being revitalized the agreement between the city and PAL will be amended to give PAL the ability to enter beneficial partnerships.
FOR
The celebration recognized Chief Michel Michel, the Command Staff and all our officers for their hard work. As a surprise Chief Michel has been nominated by one of Friends’ partners for a Hero Award. Please take a moment and vote for our very own Hometown Hero.
