First Miami Restaurant From Chef Raz Shabtai To Open In North Miami In January 2025 Mutra – named for Executive Chef/Owner Raz Shabtai’s beloved grandmother and his culinary inspiration – will open its doors at 2188 Northeast 123rd Street, North Miami, Florida 33181 in January 2025. Mutra, which translates to “rain of blessings,” is an innovative dining concept from the talented Israeli-born chef which will feature a menu that defies easy categorization. Featuring a farmto-table ethos and respect for local farmers and purveyors, Shabtai draws from great culinary traditions from around the globe, many of which can be found in his hometown of Jerusalem. One of the world’s true melting pots, Israel is also home to the flavors and traditions these immigrants brought with them – a Mecca for spices, homegrown ingredients, and a true blending of Old World recipes in a modern setting. Indeed, when asked to define his own cuisine, Chef Shabtai credits Levantine, Galilean/North Israel, and Baladi influences.
Shabtai, whose mantra for
Mutra is “food is holy,” is excited to bring these diverse flavors to Miami and add a twist to beloved dishes for savvy diners hungry for something different. Says the chef, “For Mutra, we’re taking the traditional dishes that we grew up on, food that my grandmother made and we ate as kids and making something new from it. For example, my grandmother grew up in Tunisia, where fricassee was a very popular sandwich, served on fried bread like a donut and stuffed with harissa, lemon, potatoes, tuna from the

Celebrates
First Night Of Hanukkah With Unity And Hope
The first night of Hanukkah was cele brated with a remarkable candle lighting ceremony at City Hall, attended by over 500 community members, including chil dren, adults, and elders. Organized by Rabbi Beren, and his wife Rebbetzin Tobi of Chabad Sunny Isles, the event brought together a diverse group in a spirit of unity and joy.
The Chazan of Ramban Synagogue, Roee Bruchim, opened the ceremony with special prayers, including a prayer for soldiers. His powerful voice resonated through the crowd, touching the hearts of all present. Rabbi Beren then welcomed everyone, explained the significance of Hanukkah, and invited Mayor Larisa Svechin to speak. Mayor Svechin expressed her gratitude and pride in the community’s strong turnout and spirit.
Deputy Consul General of Israel Ayellet Black was deeply moved by the impressive gathering. She noted the unity and warmth of the community, especially as they honored IDF Lieutenant Yaniv Galkovsky, who has shown incredible bravery and resilience.
Tzvia Wexler, Beit Halochem’s National Development Director, thanked the audience for their support of wounded soldiers. She spoke about Lieutenant Yaniv, highlighting his story as one of the modern-day miracles of Hanukkah. Wexler emphasized the significance of seeing Yaniv stand with the community, symbolizing hope and perseverance.
Rabbi Beren proudly introduced Lieutenant Yaniv Galkovsky to the stage, referring to him as a hero of the IDF. Yaniv, visibly moved, shared his harrowing yet inspiring journey. As a platoon leader in the “Kfir” Brigade, Yaniv faced unimaginable challenges during his service in Gaza. He recounted the day when a terrorist’s explosive device caused the loss of three soldiers and injured fourteen, including himself. Despite his injuries, Yaniv’s leadership saved lives, and his commitment to his comrades didn’t end there. Through his recovery, Yaniv dedicated himself to supporting the families of the fallen and helping injured soldiers. He found solace and strength at Beit Halochem, where the supportive community and exceptional facilities played a crucial role in his rehabilitation.
my own and that of my fellow soldiers— we had to confront the harsh reality that we were not as physically capable as we once were. Even though we might appear fine and manage daily activities, returning to sports in regular gyms, surrounded by people who hadn’t endured what we had, was daunting,” Yaniv shared. “For months, the only place where I felt truly comfortable playing the sports I loved was
Beit Halochem in Tel Aviv, near my home. The exceptional facilities and staff, and most importantly, the supportive and understanding community of the basketball team—comprising individuals who had faced similar struggles—played a crucial role in my rehabilitation. They helped me reclaim my life and rediscover my strength.”
Yaniv then lit the first candle of Hanukkah in honor of the thousands of
wounded soldiers and in memory of his fallen comrades. The ceremony continued with music and festive food, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere.
This memorable evening at Sunny Isles Beach City Hall marked the beginning of Hanukkah with a powerful message of resilience, community, and hope. The community looks forward to continuing the celebration of Hanukkah, bringing light and unity to all.

Breaking The Rules
We all grow up being indoctrinated with rules that limit us. The purveyors of this information are not malicious. They are simply passing along what they themselves have been taught. You are probably aware of one or more of the following rules. Decide for yourself if you have been limited by any of them.
Don’t rock the boat
This rule encourages conformity. Conformity offers a protection from criticism. But those who succeed don’t care about criticism. They become adept at new or better ways of doing things in spite of opinions.
Nice guys finish last
According to this maxim, being nice is a recipe for failure. Therefore, if you want to succeed you may have to compromise

as desired, adjust your strategy and keep going. Virtually all achievement is the result of taking chances.
It’s not what you know but who you know Granted, networking with the right people can accelerate goal achievement. However, if you connect with the right people but have no expertise, any edge will be lost and you will develop a reputation as a fraud. You don’t have to start with connections. With persistence, you will meet the right people.
You have to be lucky to succeed Of course luck helps. But the harder you work, the more luck you’ll have. Luck determines lottery winners. Effort determines success in life. Passively sitting around waiting for circumstances to improve won’t yield any positive results.
Money is the root of all evil
your ethics. In actuality, those who consistently do the best are nice, considerate, and concerned about the well being of others.
It takes money to make money
There are so many examples of wealthy individuals who have started from scratch, that it’s odd this rule still persists at all.
t’s the way things have always been done If mankind had followed this rule, we would still be living in the Stone Age. Doing things differently leads to improvements. Ask questions. Don’t perpetuate behavior that makes no sense.
Good things never last Life has its ups and downs. With the right attitude, effort, action, and perseverance, you can have a lot more good than
bad. Take an active role in what happens to you. Don’t settle for what you don’t want.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
This isn’t necessarily a bad rule. The danger is that it detracts from your focus. Often it is better to put your eggs in one basket, and then put all of your energy into guarding that basket.
Don’t be concerned about what others think You have to do what is right for you. It doesn’t matter what others say, think, or do. Follow your own path.
Don’t take chances
Living is taking a chance. Nothing is guaranteed. If something doesn’t work out
People use this one to justify why they are not earning as much as they would like. The original statement is that love of money is the root of all evil. Money is simply a tool that can be used for constructive or destructive purposes. Money is earned as a result of one’s service to others.
Don’t daydream Dreams are the foundation for all accomplishment. Thoughts of situations that don’t yet exist are a great motivator. Dreams give a person a vision of what could be. All that has been accomplished throughout history started with a dream. Don’t hesitate to break any rules that limit your success. If a rule doesn’t help you or someone else, ignore it.

New Year, New Pet: The Joys And Challenges Of Puppy Ownership
Over the holidays, many people may have chosen to welcome a new puppy into their families. While those big eyes and wiggly tails may be irresistible, these families may quickly discover that their new addition can bring as much chaos as it does cuteness.
If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or regretful after welcoming a puppy, you’re not alone — and there are plenty of ways to navi gate this stage with optimism and success.
Dr. Lori Teller, a clinical profes sor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, shares her expert advice on how to thrive through the ups and downs of puppyhood.
From Bliss To Chaos:
The First Few Weeks
Puppyhood isn’t all tail wags and playtime. A new puppy can disrupt your routine, test your patience, and turn your furniture into their personal chew toys — all before breakfast.
“Puppies are adorable, fun, and entertaining, but they will also suck up your free time, uri nate on your best rug, and chew up your most expensive shoes,” Teller said. “In other words, expect to feel the full spectrum of emotions and to live in chaos temporarily.”
Preparation is key to setting yourself up for success. Before bringing your new furry friend home, ensure your house is puppy-proofed and stocked with essentials like a crate, chew toys, and a leash.
“Find a veterinarian before finding a puppy and talk about realistic expectations,” Teller said. “Understanding your pup py’s breed — or breed mix — can go a long way in preparing for its behavior and energy levels.”
regular meals and potty breaks can help them settle into their new environment more smoothly.
Once your puppy arrives home, be ready to dedicate significant time to meeting its needs — and soaking up all the adorable moments in between.
“If you need to leave the house or get some things done and can’t watch your
prepared puppy owner feeling overwhelmed. This phase, often referred to as the “puppy blues,” is a common challenge, particularly for first-time owners. Though puppies’ rapid development — transitioning from chaotic toddlers to mischievous teenagers in just a few months — can be exhausting, there is light at the end of the tunnel. This stage is temporary,
“They can help you tackle the more challenging aspects of puppyhood, such as housetraining, teething, and getting your puppy to sleep through the night,” Teller said. “Veterinarians can also offer guidance on managing the overwhelming moments that come with this stage.”
Teller also suggests working with a reliable trainer and attending puppy socialization or obedience classes.
Smaller breeds often finish teething earlier, while larger breeds may become house-trained faster. Knowing these breed-specific tendencies can help you anticipate what to expect and adjust accordingly.
In addition, establishing a predictable schedule can also make a significant difference. Puppies thrive on routine, and

and with patience and proper guidance, these early trials lead to a well-adjusted, loving companion, according to Teller. If the stress feels unmanageable or begins to impact your mental health, don’t hesitate to seek help from a trusted medical professional; likewise, your veterinarian can be an invaluable resource as you navigate the ups and downs of puppyhood.
“These classes are a great way for your puppy to learn good manners and for you to realize you’re not alone in your frustrations,” Teller said. “Your classmates will be experiencing the same highs and lows, and your puppy will make new friends —

Every Jewish mother secretly – and often not so secretly – adds specifics to her wish: A doctor, a lawyer, a dentist, or these days, a Silicon Valley tycoon would make her very happy. Brad Zimmerman’s mother has finally adapted to her ‘actor-waiter’ son’s career choice and financial situation: “If all goes well, I think Brad is going to buy a bookcase,” she boasts to her friends.
Brad Zimmerman has paid his dues. He spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in New York, all the while chasing a career in acting and comedy. He says he did enjoy some of the bantering he did with diners, and often tried out material on them, however there were also ‘the bossy customers who would snap their fingers to get his attention… and the health-food obsessives who elaborately customized their orders and button-holed him over ingredients.’ As he says in My Son the Waiter: A Jewish Tragedy, he was convinced his epitaph would read “I’ll be right with you.”
His perseverance and hard work eventually did pay off, and Zimmerman went on to act - he had a small part in “The Sopranos” playing Johnny Sack’s lawyerand to become the opening act for a number of well-known entertainers, including George Carlin, Brad Garrett, Dennis Miller,

Food & Wine From Page 1A
By John & Nisha Whitehead
We have become a nation adrift in a sea of government overreach, abuse and corruption. The following is a sobering account of the challenges we faced in 2024, which were marked by the government’s never-ending power grabs and relentless assaults on our civil liberties. 2024 saw a continued rise in government overreach and abuse of power. The militarization of police forces continued unabated, with local departments increasingly resembling extensions of the military. Schools, meant to be places of learning and growth, became more prison-like with the implementation of “safety” measures that criminalize minor infractions and create an environment of fear. The right to private property was further eroded, with the government increasingly empowered to seize assets under various pretexts. The plight of the homeless worsened, with cities criminalizing homelessness and implementing policies designed to make their lives even more difficult. Military veterans, once hailed as heroes, were increasingly treated with suspicion and subjected to surveillance. On almost every front this year, the government overreached and abused its powers. With every new law enacted by federal and state legislatures, every new ruling handed down by government courts, and every new military weapon, invasive tactic and egregious protocol employed by government agents, we were reminded that in the eyes of the government and its corporate accomplices, “we the people” possess no rights except for that which the Deep State grants on an as-needed basis. Surveillance eroded what little privacy we have left. The Surveillance State grew even more pervasive. Facial recognition technology expanded into new areas of our lives, with vast amounts of our biometric data collected, often without our knowledge or consent, eroding our ano-
nymity and enabling unprecedented tracking of our movements. Data breaches continued to expose the vulnerability of our personal information.
Free speech continued to be under attack. Protest laws, free speech zones, and other restrictions made it more difficult for citizens to exercise their First Amendment rights. Social Media companies, often in collusion with the government, engaged in censorship of viewpoints they deemed unacceptable. This online censorship creates an echo chamber and limits the free flow of information.
The influence of the Deep State and the military-industrial complex continued to grow. Endless wars abroad drained the nation’s resources while doing little to make Americans safer. The militaryindustrial complex’s grip on almost every aspect of American life tightened.
The president became more imperial. Although the Constitution invests the President with very specific, limited powers, in recent years, American presidents have claimed the power to completely and almost unilaterally alter the landscape of this country for good or for ill. The powers amassed by each successive president through the negligence of Congress and the courts—powers which add up to a toolbox of terror for an imperial ruler— empower whoever occupies the Oval Office to act as a dictator, above the law and beyond any real accountability. The presidency itself has become an imperial one with permanent powers.
The cost of endless wars drove the nation deeper into debt. Policing the globe and waging endless wars abroad hasn’t made America—or the rest of the world—any safer, but it has made the military industrial complex rich at taxpayer expense.
The courts failed to uphold justice. Time and time again, the Supreme Court failed to right the wrongs being meted out
by the American police state. A review of critical court rulings over the past decade or so, including some ominous ones by the U.S. Supreme Court, reveals a startling and steady trend towards pro-police state rulings by an institution concerned more with establishing order and protecting the ruling class and government agents than with upholding the rights enshrined in the Constitution.
The rich got richer, and the poor went to jail. Not content to expand the police state’s power to search, strip, seize, raid, steal from, arrest and jail Americans for any infraction, no matter how insignificant, the courts continued their practice of jailing individuals who are unable to pay the hefty fines imposed by the American police state. These debtors’ prisons play right into the hands of those who make a profit by jailing Americans. This is no longer a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.” It is fast becoming a government “of the rich, by the elite, for the corporations,” and its rise to power is predicated on shackling the American taxpayer to a debtors’ prison guarded by a phalanx of politicians, bureaucrats and militarized police with no hope of parole and no chance for escape.
Police became even more militarized and weaponized. Despite concerns about the government’s steady transformation of local police into a standing military army, local police agencies continued to acquire weaponry, training and equipment suited for the battlefield. There are now reportedly more bureaucratic (nonmilitary) government civilians armed with high-tech, deadly weapons than U.S. Marines.
Schools turned into prisons. So-called school “safety” policies, which run the gamut from zero tolerance policies that punish all infractions harshly to surveillance cameras, metal detectors, random searches, drug-sniffing dogs, school-wide
Donned in a Santa hat with a Christmas bulb necklace around her neck and Jolly Old St. Nicholas by her side, Rita Case, President and CEO of the Rick Case Automotive Group, surprised members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County with bikes as part of Rick Case Bikes for Kids. The group visited the Rick Case Honda showroom in Davie, Florida, where they found a bike tagged with their name on it. For 42 years, Rick Case Bikes for Kids has collected gently used bikes from the community.
“This has become my favorite holiday tradition,” said Case. “I give to various causes close to my heart throughout the year, but what makes Rick Case Bikes for
lockdowns, active-shooter drills and militarized police officers, turned schools into prisons and young people into prisoners.
The government waged a renewed war on private property. The battle to protect our private property has become the final constitutional frontier, the last holdout against our freedoms being usurped. We no longer have any real property rights. That house you live in, the car you drive, whatever money you manage to keep in your bank account after the government and its cronies have taken their first and second and third cut…none of it is safe from the government’s greedy grasp. At no point do you ever have any real ownership in anything other than the clothes on your back. Everything else can be seized by the government under one pretext or another (civil asset forfeiture, unpaid taxes, eminent domain, public interest, etc.).
In sum, 2024 was a disheartening year for those who cherish freedom. Yet no matter who sits in the White House, politics won’t fix a system that is broken beyond repair.
As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we are at our most vulnerable right now: the gravest threat facing us as a nation in 2025 is not extremism but despotism, exercised by a ruling class whose only allegiance is to power and money.

Welcome To 2025!
And the Reflections
On Cuba III
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
Welcome to 2025! We have so much to look forward to this year as a city. This week we will resume our regularly scheduled commission meetings. Commission meetings are on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., City Hall Commission Chambers 400 South Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. Agendas are made available 3 days before each commission meeting. The City Commission encourages citizen participation in the local government process. Any individual may speak on any agenda item and/or any subject pertinent to the City. Every individual wishing to address the City Commission is encouraged to sign in with the City Clerk prior to the meeting. Public participation during all items is limited to three minutes. Many residents have shared the long lines, months to book an appointment at the local DMV or having to travel to other cities or counties to get appointments at the DMV. With much thanks to our State Representative Marie Woodson and Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, we will host a one-day Mobile Unit Driver’s License Service right here in Hallandale Beach. Wednesday, January 29th, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Cultural Community Center, 410 Southeast 3rd Street, CCC Room 107, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. Registration is required, please contact Luetisha Clark by calling: (954) 965-3700. Or via email at: Luetisha.Clark@myfloridahouse.gov.
This week, I continue with my reflections on Cuba. After visiting the Hotel National, we went to our Hotel in Old Havana. Wonderful attentive staff greeted us. The Hotel, while modern and clean, showed plenty of wear. This was the only place where we had internet access. I am still questioning where some of the pictures I took of decrepit buildings, potholes and trash filled streets went. We
with potholes, trash and wandering dogs. I found it strange that dogs were left simply running freely eating trash off the streets. We also saw on many occasions individuals rummaging through trash bins that have not been cleaned up for over three weeks.
Our second day, we were to go to the Jewish Cemetery, but that excursion was canceled unexpectedly. We did have the chance to visit the oldest Orthodox Temple. Sadly, the day before we arrived the President of the umbrella Jewish Organization had passed away. Cuba before the revolution had a population over 15,000 Jews who left Europe during the Russian Programs and WWII. Now the population has dwindled to 410.
The Rabbi in the small Jewish quarter explained he was the only Schochet. This is a certified person able to kill animals that meet Kosher standards, who can kill animals by the Kosher Regulations. The communist government owns everything including all animals, so this was a point of pride. He was able to be able to provide meat when many people simply had to wait in line for extremely limited groceries. Due to poverty and lack of food the Synagogue does share food and services to the surrounding community. We held a question-and-answer period about life in Cuba. The synagogue reminded me very much of our Chabad here in Hallandale Beach.
We headed out to the cigar factory. The factory was as it was for years. A fourstory building walk-up, each floor was
It was fascinating and yet sad to watch the mass hand production of cigars. Living in Florida over the years, I have watched a single roller but picture fifty plus in one room side by side rolling all day for a dollar a day. It was explained that often rollers would offer to sell their cigars and that discreetly we could buy them.
The most interesting lesson of the day was why Cohiba cigars were named and became the most famous. The CIA under plausible deniability plotted to assassinate Castro. There were over six hundred attempts to kill Castro; only eight could be substantiated. One method was to make a cigar explode or simply poison one of them. Castro ordered a specific area where only specific rollers could roll his cigars to protect him from death. Hence the name “C” oh “I” b ”A.” He would give these cigars to guests and dignitaries only.
Our next stop was a tour of the Museum of Fine Art. We had a private tour of the vast collection of major arts. The museum, while impressive, was very empty of people. The museum was getting ready for its Biennial. Esterio Segura was in the process of creating his exhibition depicting some of his famous pieces and including an old classic car embellished to look like a submarine. I found his message so intriguing. He is also known for the Heart with Wings and other cars that symbolize a way of escape from oppression.
Sequra also has a series that depicted the communist oppression of religion. My favorite was a replicated sculpture of Cuba’s eternal flame in honor of Castro’s revolution. It is a large star with a flame but rather than simply a flame it included a bust of Jesus in the center. Communism is against the practice of any religion. In 1992 Castro changed his stance on religious practices and even let Catholics
join the party. He viewed the country as secular rather than atheist at that time. Ironically with the rise in Antisemitism, the Jewish people we met suggested it does not exist in Cuba but then again it might simply be there is only a little over four hundred in a population of eight million.
While this trip was being planned there was an extreme power shortage. I say extreme because it is typical for homes not to have power. We were staying in the tourist area so many of the hotels had power and were equipped with generators. The Synagogue Bet Shalom where we attended services on Friday started out services without lights.
When we arrived at the Shul, we were not the only visiting group. There was another group from New Jersey that joined in with the congregation. The Rabbi had planned for a group of young adults to lead the service. The incoming President spoke of the message to all that we can unite and conduct services without electricity as a message to all Jews.
As the youth leaders proceeded with prayers, all of them women were invited to light Shabbat candles. Picture the light of over fifty plus candles illuminating the sanctuary. It was so moving and inspiring. Halfway through the service the lights finally came on. While we felt a bit safer, we all felt a bit of disappointment for we had just come together as Jews celebrating as many throughout the globe have with much less in unity no matter what the challenge was.
