There are many Veterans Benefits available for you, make sure you get what you deserve.

More than 6 million Americans receive earned benefits for Military Service - including Disability Compensation, Education Benefits, Caregiver Assistance, Burial Benefits and more. It is critical for Spouses and Caregivers to know how Veteran’s Benefits are accessed and what could happen when or if a Veteran dies.

Consider this scenario. A Veteran has not told his Spouse much about his Veteran’s Benefits. The Veteran dies suddenly. His Spouse grieves and plans a funeral, which she pays for Out Of Pocket. The $2,500 Tax-FREE Payment from the VA for her husband’s Disability Compensation has stopped being deposited into their bank account, which her Spouse managed. Now she struggles to meet her Expenses and is afraid she will have to sell their home.

Ultimately, she realizes she must connect with the VA to try to access Survivor Benefits. As she works her way through the bureaucracy, she struggles to understand what she may be eligible for and knows little about what her husband was receiving. This can be overwhelming during the best of times, but during this period of loss, it adds more Stress.

“Anthropologist’s Delight,” Opens October 4th

ArtServe Invites Local Artists To Imagine How They’ll Be Remembered In a Thousand Years

When anthropologists unearth our present-day culture a thousand years from now, what will the artwork they find tell them about us and how we lived?

ArtServe posed this question to its local member artists and invited them to display the artwork they feel best represents themselves, their lives, family and culture in an exhibit, Anthropologist’s Delight, which opens Friday, October 4th with a FREE reception from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale.

“Humans have been creating art for as long as we’ve been on the Earth,” ArtServe CEO Jason Hughes said. “What they’ve left behind has taught us so much about human nature, what we valued back

methodology to our programming. Together, we can build a future where young people in Florida and across the United States are equipped with concrete conflict resolution skills.”

Million Peacemakers will provide training in its Nonflict® conflict resolution and peacemaking method through HLE. Nonflict® is a conflict resolution methodology outlined in “Nonflict: The Art of Everyday Peacemaking,” written by Million Peacemakers Co-Founders Stephen Hecht and Dr. Amir Kfir.

“We are excited to partner with MorseLife and the state of Florida to bring the art of peacemaking into schools across Florida, shaping a future where peace is a part of the curriculum,” said Stephen Hecht, Chief Executive Peacemaker and Founder, Million Peacemakers.

HLE uses an innovative Signature Educational Model designed as a turn-key operation that is scalable, equitable and uniform in both rural and urban settings. The HLE Learning Management System is a bundled, plug-and-play approach that includes original, professionally produced interviews and testimonies of Holocaust survivors and age-appropriate, multisensory, historically accurate documentary-style films.

The Holocaust Learning Experience

The mission of the Holocaust Learning Experience (HLE) developed by MorseLife is to educate and transform generations to end Antisemitism and combat Hate, Bigotry and Prejudice. The HLE, developed by MorseLife, has been entrusted by the State of Florida to develop, deploy and deliver lessons from the Holocaust, impacting more than two million students, grades 5 -12, in all 67 school districts. Designed as a turn-key operation through a Learning Management System, the program offers age-appropriate, gradespecific lessons from the Holocaust directly into classrooms across the curriculum. This also fills a critical gap acting as a resource for teachers who have never been trained in Holocaust studies.

Attorney General Moody Files Lawsuit

Against Biden-Harris Administration Over Refusal To Produce Documents

Detailing The Release Of Criminal Illegal immigrants In Florida

“Recently, Americans watched in horror as they witnessed the consequences of this Biden-Harris policy, as well as other open borders policies, when armed gang members took over an apartment complex in Colorado and used it as a base for criminal activity.” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody

Attorney General Ashley Moody last week filed a lawsuit against the BidenHarris Administration over its failure to produce public documents responsive to a Freedom Of Information Act Request. The FOIA Request, filed by the Florida Attorney General’s Office in March, seeks documents regarding the administration’s policies permitting the release of dangerous criminals into the United States following their release from U.S. prisons.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “In addition to flat out refusing to secure the border, reports indicate that President Biden and failed Border Czar Kamala Harris refuse to deport dangerous Illegal Immigrant prisoners into our communities once they are released from prison. On top of that, reports last week show possible foreign gang affiliated Illegal Aliens overtaking apartment complexes in

situation are often approached by agents who offer to help them with VA Benefits in return for payment. Faced with what feels

American cities. This administration has made it clear they will not turn over documents showing this dangerous and unlawful scheme in a timely manner. Now, American cities are suffering in a very public way. I will not stand idly by and allow this dereliction of duty, that is why I filed suit today.”

In March, Attorney General Moody filed the FOIA Request saying at the time, “The Biden Administration has full knowledge that prisoners from other countries are making their way into the United States through our wide-open border. Now, we are demanding to know reasons why the Biden Administration is releasing Criminal Illegal Aliens in U.S. prisons directly into the interior, rather than deporting them back to their country of origin. This reckless scheme could have disastrous and serious repercussions, and the American people deserve to know.”

After the administration failed to respond to the request, Attorney General Moody filed a complaint for injunctive relief and to compel production of documents in Federal District Court. The complaint reads in part, “Historically, when

Illegal Aliens were brought to the U.S. to be prosecuted for their crimes, it was well understood that the aliens would be deported once they have served their sentence. That was until the Biden-Harris Administration implemented their shockingly irresponsible immigration policy, pushing unknown numbers of dangerous criminals straight from federal prison into our communities and causing chaos, anarchy, and crime.”

The complaint goes on to state, “Recently, Americans watched in horror as they witnessed the consequences of this Biden-Harris policy, as well as other open borders policies, when armed gang members took over an apartment complex in Colorado and used it as a base for criminal activity. That incident represents merely one example of the destruction and chaos wrought by this Administration’s policy choices. Even so, most Americans do not understand just how reckless the Biden-Harris Administration has been behaving. By way of example, consider aliens caught on the high seas seeking to smuggle Illicit Drugs into our country. Unlike aliens who reach

land, aliens caught at sea are generally not eligible to Claim Asylum or to appear before an Immigration Judge. The Federal Government, however, sometimes chooses to bring these Criminal Aliens to the United States so the aliens can be prosecuted consistent with Federal Law and serve time in prison. But everyone has always assumed—in both Democratic and Republican Administrations—that such aliens would be deported the moment they finished their criminal sentence. Otherwise, the decision to bring a criminal to the United States for prosecution results in a benefit to that alien in the form of the right to permanently remain in the United States. For the first time in history, however, the Biden-Harris Administration has abandoned that practice…In other words, as things stand, asylum seekers caught on the high seas have been returned to their home country without even seeing an Immigration Judge, while Drug Traffickers and other serious criminals brought to the United States only for the purpose of serving prison time are being released straight into our communities to wreak havoc on our citizenry.”

like an insurmountable situation, some agree, even though paying for help is not necessary as many free resources are available to assist them.

Here are some tips to help Veteran’s prevent this type of scenario from befalling their loved ones.

Organizing Veterans Benefits Paperwork and information in a binder, and/or in a special digital folder that you share with your family. Carefully organize all the documentation related to your Military Service, your Application For Benefits, and the Decision Letters describing Service Connection. Store Paper Copies in a Fireproof Cabinet or Safe. It is ideal to scan or Photograph Paper Documentation and to also store it digitally on a Computer or Thumb Drive.

Explain your Current Veteran’s Benefits to your family. Schedule a day and time to

talk one-on-one with your family about the benefits you receive. Get out your Binder and Digital Files and explain to them how the information is organized. Help them understand the situation as it is today. Discuss what happens to these benefits after you die and what additional benefits the family may receive. Disability Compensation Payments stop after a Veteran dies. Additional Survivor and Burial Benefits may be available after a Veteran’s passing. You can learn more by checking online at: https://www.va.gov/or with a Veteran’s Service Officer (VSO). Plan ahead for possible financial shortfalls. Even if a Survivor Benefit is awarded to a widow or widower by the VA, the payment for this benefit will typically be lower than the Disability Compensation the Veteran received while alive. One way to address this income shortfall before the

Veteran dies is to purchase life insurance that will provide additional income for the Spouse. Give your family contact information for your VSO. Ideally, your Spouse should be introduced to the VSO, so the Spouse knows who can assist with applying for Survivor and Burial Benefits after the Veteran dies.

While these conversations can be tough for many, they can better inform and relieve Stress for our families in the future. You want for the people you love to be taken care of after you are gone, so do not delay having these conversations.

‘Hunger Heroes Take Action’

Feeding South Florida Kicks Off Hunger Action Month This September

Feeding South Florida – the Leading Hunger-Relief Organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties – is commemorating Hunger Action Month this September with a myriad of activities to encourage South Floridians to “Go Orange” to stand against hunger. Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America®, takes place throughout September and is designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America and inspire others to take action toward ending it. This year Feeding South Florida’s theme is “Hunger Heroes Take Action.”

Currently, in South Florida, there are more than 1.2 million food insecure individuals. One in nine individuals in South Florida remain uncertain about where they will get their next meal due to inflation, the strained Supply Chain, Rising Fuel Prices and Increased Housing Costs among other factors. Proceeds raised during the month-long initiative will allow Feeding South Florida to fulfill its mission to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to Nutritious Food, leading Hunger and Poverty Advocacy Efforts and transforming lives through Innovative Programming and Education. An online auction during the month will allow bidders access to fun, unique items while supporting Feeding South Florida’s Hunger Relief Efforts. Go Orange t-shirts and orange mustaches will be available for purchase to raise awareness about hunger. Monetary Donations will go further during September with a one-to-one match with Delta Airlines, up to $25,000. Every donation is critical as a $1 Donation allows Feeding South Florida to provide approximately four meals to a family in need.

Feeding South Florida will also host

two Hunger Relief Town Hall Meetings during Hunger Action Month to educate the public and donors about Food Insecurity and Hunger Relief Efforts. The Hunger Relief Town Hall is a pivotal initiative hosted in collaboration with Health Choice Network, Feeding South Florida, Broward Community and Family Health Centers, University of Miami Health System and Jessie Trice Community Health System, through a grant from the National Institute of Health. This gathering brings together a diverse array of stakeholders – from community leaders and healthcare professionals to policymakers and grassroots advocates – to focus on tackling the multifaceted challenges of Food Insecurity head-on. The meetings will take place on September 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus and on September 11th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Nova Southeastern University’s Rick Case Arena.

During Hunger Action Month, South Floridians can “Go Orange” by participating in various activities throughout the month including:

• Start a Fund Drive: Raise money with coworkers, friends and family online.

• Start a Food Drive: Feeding South Florida relies on the generous support of the community to host food drives to ensure it receives shelfstable, high-demand products.

• Participate in the 2024 Outrun Hunger 5K –Palm Beach County: (7:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 21st) Participants can raise funds for Feeding South Florida by running or walking during this fun-filled event taking place at the beautiful Okeeheelee Park (7715 Forest Hill Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33413). • Volunteer: During Hunger Action Month, coworkers, family and friends are invited to volunteer to sort food at one of Feeding South Florida’s warehouses or help prepare and cook meals for children and seniors at Feeding South Florida’s 5,000-square-foot state-of-the-art multi-purpose Community Kitchen in Boynton Beach. Go Orange!

Throughout the month, individuals can host an orange bake sale, government and municipalities can issue a proclamation for Hunger Action Month, hotels can welcome guests with an in-room display that showcases Hunger Action Month, schools can develop students’ skills by creating a project to promote hunger awareness and much more. During Hunger Action Month in the past, several landmark buildings including The Breakers, Miami Tower, and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood Guitar Hotel all participated in “GO ORANGE DAY” by turning their lights orange. Resume Rejections

Expert Warns That Florida Job Candidates Are Sabotaging Their Careers By Using AI

almost expected that candidates will rely on AI Chatbots to craft their resumés and cover letters. Yet, despite the widespread adoption of tools like ChatGPT, AI might actually be a stumbling block in securing that crucial job offer.

https://Resume.io/, who commissioned a survey of 3,000 hiring managers. The sur vey revealed that over one-half (51%) of Florida managers automatically dismiss resumes created using AI. “AI-generated content often contains tell-tale signs, such as overly polished or excessively detailed cover letters, and HR professionals now have access to sophisticated tools that easily identify such content,” says Resume.io Career Expert, Amanda Augustine.

the survey unveiled deeper concerns among hiring managers. A significant 78% of managers stated that they would prefer to receive a poorly written but authentic resume over a perfectly written, yet dis ingenuous, AI-generated one. “Authenticity in job applications is more valued than perfection,” Augustine adds. “Employers are looking for genuine can didates, not just flawless prose.”

using AI tools for resume creation, 31% of managers recommend that candidates heavily customize AI-generated content if they choose to use it. Another 22% sug gested using AI as a starting point and then seeking professional help. Only 21% of managers were in favor of fully embrac ing AI tools to create resumes. “The con sensus is clear: If you’re going to use AI, you need to make it your own. The human touch is irreplaceable,” Augustine advises. Ethical concerns surrounding AI in resume creation were also brought to light. Nearly half (46%) of Florida respondents believed that AI could misrepresent

a candidate’s true skills, while 24% felt it creates unfair advantages. “There’s a growing unease about how AI might be distorting the hiring process, leading to misalignments between a candidate’s

actual abilities and their AI-enhanced presentation,” says Augustine. Furthermore, the survey revealed that 62% of managers believe companies should implement policies requiring can-

didates to disclose if their resume was AIgenerated. “Transparency is key,” Augustine emphasizes. “Candidates need to be upfront about their use of AI, and employers need to set clear expectations.”

of the highest quality that kids can’t wait to go to!

An educational consulting company hired by Miami-Dade to rate after-school programs throughout the county, has rated Chabad Chayil’s program one of the best. After spending two weeks observing and analyzing every aspect of Chabad’s program, Cynthia Serure, President of A Gift for the Soul, Inc. concluded that program was exemplary. “This program scored at the top on virtually all analytical criteria including quality of staff, studentteacher interaction, and curriculum,” said Serure. “It is a model program.”

According to all studies, Jewish Education is a proven factor in ensuring Jewish involvement and continuity. We seek to ensure that every single child has access to a high-quality Jewish edu-

cation. Chabad is the place to experience Jewish enrichment classes in a fun, yet meaningful way. It’s where parents feel comfortable and where kids don’t want to miss a day!

CHAP attracts children ages 5-13 from 7 different schools and is extremely popular in the area for homeschoolers as well. There is a waiting list for some classes and Chabad is working hard to build at their own location so they can expand accordingly. Construction is almost complete and the new building should be open mid year! For Updates, See!: https:// www.chabadchayil.org/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/1461129/jewish/BuildingCampaign.htm

Transportation is provided for children coming from VABHOE (Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary School) and Bridgeprep Academy in the Skylake section of Aventura’s North Miami Beach. As far as other schools, there are many parents getting together to carpool and if

there’s enough children coming from one school, a van or bus can be arranged.

The school welcomes every Jew, regardless of religious background or level of observance. This school does not require membership of any sort as a condition for enrollment.

Chabad Chayil’s mission is to promote and strengthen Jewish Awareness, pride, and observance, by providing educational, cultural, and social activities to all Jewish individuals and families regardless of background or affiliation. One of our main programs is CHAP, whose mission is to provide affordable and effective Jewish Education to children not enrolled in Jewish Schools. Our goal is to enable parents to retain their jobs, confident that their children are safe & happy. CHAP keeps its students fit while instilling in them (and their families) a sense of warmth, pride and love for their heritage & Israel.

Helping Your Pet With Separation Anxiety

If you have ever lived in a household alongside a pet that excessively howls, scratches at the door, or exhibits an overall sense of panic when a loved one leaves the home, it can be beneficial to speak with a veterinarian about the potential diagnosis of separation anxiety.

Dr. Lori Teller, a Clinical Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, unpacks the actions linked to separation anxiety with methods of how to alleviate the pet’s stress and behavioral responses associated with it.

Unwelcome Changes

Separation anxiety occurs when an animal — most commonly a dog, though some cats may experience this type of Anxiety as well — becomes upset due to being apart from their owner or any individual to whom the pet has grown attached.

While Anxiety, in general, has many triggers and is frequently multifactorial, Teller said there are specific life-events or experiences that may contribute to a dog’s development of separation anxiety, including:

• Abandonment when young

• Poor socialization, especially when young

• Lack of training to be left alone and to entertain itself

• Divorce of a family member

• Death of a family member

• Sudden change in work or school schedules

According to Teller, a dog’s personality may also contribute to Separation Anxiety, as some dogs may be naturally more clingy than others.

Stage-Five Clinger

Because anxiety looks different for every pet, it is important to differentiate excitement or a lack of training from Anxiety.

Several identifiable canine behaviors that signal Separation Anxiety are:

• Pacing

• Whining

• Shaking

• Excessive barking, drooling, or panting

• Destructive behavior, including digging out of the yard, or urinating and defecating in the house

Cats also experience Stress when there are major changes in their lives or in the household, but they express it differently. Signs that a Cat is experiencing separation anxiety may include:

• Urinating in inappropriate locations

• Lack of appetite

• Loud, excessive meowing

If you have concerns about behaviors your pet is displaying, Teller says it’s important to discuss those with your veterinarian. Videos of the behavior can be helpful in determining what is going on.

Teller says treating separation anxiety requires more than a little “chill pill.”

“Medications alone will not resolve separation anxiety,” Teller said. “There are a variety of medications that are used to help alleviate anxiety and make it easier to institute a behavior modification plan.

“Your veterinarian will work with you to create a behavior modification plan to help eliminate undesirable behaviors and replace them with more appropriate ones,” she said.

Another way to help your pet is that when you know a big change is coming, helping them prepare by introducing activities to their routine also may help prevent Anxiety when that big change eventually comes.

“Prevention is key, and there are a variety of things that can be done to help prevent Separation Anxiety in pets,” Teller said. “Pets need to learn that it is OK to be alone and to entertain themselves, even when someone is home.”

Introducing puzzle toys, food-stuffed toys, and long-lasting chews are options that can help to replace that comfort person with a comfort item. And for sense-

safe and recognizable space without their favorite human by their side.

According to Teller, another method to potentially reduce Anxiety is to encourage your pet to exercise and release some energy prior to leaving for your day at school or work. A long walk or run or game of fetch may do. Through exercise, a dog trades morning stress-filled yelps with a morning nap instead.

Comfort In Confinement

Finally, when dealing with an anxious dog, crates can offer an enclosed sense of security in their distress.

“When putting a dog in a crate, use lots of praise and make sure the dog has a puzzle toy or chew treat when it goes into the crate,” Teller said. “As a dog feels more comfortable, you can gradually increase the amount of space it has access to — moving from the crate to a

room and then hopefully to most of the house. It is important that a dog learns from early on that a crate is a safe place. Some dogs may not be amenable to crate training until their separation Anxiety has lessened.”

Likewise, cats also need safe places, though usually not crates. These safe spaces can include a room with perches at different levels or nooks where they can hide, Teller says.

“If you notice a change in your dog’s or cat’s behavior, speak with your veterinarian, have a complete physical done, and be sure to let your veterinarian know that there have been changes in the pet’s lifestyle or household,” Teller said. It is important to recognize that separation anxiety is a medical condition and needs to be treated appropriately. By encouraging your pet’s independence, and working with a veterinarian, as necessary, owners can help instill in their beloved companions behaviors that allow them to thrive on their own.

Everyone Loves An Oreo:

Can I come live with you? My name is Oreo (ID 687718) and sadly I lost my home because my beloved owner had to move to an assisted living facility and could not take me along. I miss him but hope someone will let me spend my golden years with them. As my name describes, I’m a black and White Feline who weighs 14-pounds and I’m 11-yearsyoung. I’m easy-going, enjoy taking naps and will tell you stories for attention. Once I get to know you, we can cuddle, and I hope you can supply me with lots of soft kitty toys and a scratching post. I might be the oldest feline at the shelter currently, but I have a lot of love to share.

Hi! I’m Houston (ID 686789) and I’m a very good boy! Now let me warn you, when you come to the shelter to meet me, I’ll be bouncing around in my kennel like a kangaroo because I HATE being in a kennel, it makes me

crazy. BUT rest assured when I get out, I am a different dog completely. First, I like to listen to conversations and be a part of them. Two, I am very strict about my bedtime so don’t try keeping me up late. Three, don’t poke fun but I’m afraid of leaves. The way they move is freaky! Some other “normal” doggy stuff you might want to know is I’m friendly, laid back, although I do like to play too, I’m potty trained, know my commands, love kids and adults too. I do like other dogs, but I’m confused about what to do with them. I’m a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever Mix who is a bit “quirky!” Let’s quirk out together!

Stabilization Efforts Have Truly Paid Off

We are required by law to conduct two formal Budget Public Hearings. The first is being held this Thursday the 12th at 5:00 p.m. and the second and final hearing will be held on September 26th at 5:05 p.m. Annual Budget planning is kicked off in March by the Budget Department under directions from City Manager Dr. Jeremy Earle. The team does not just plan for one year but develops a 5-year financial projection. Our stabilization efforts over the previous 5 years have truly paid off. These unified efforts have resulted in a balanced budget with thirty-one million dollars in undesignated reserves. This has allowed us to remain true to our mission to reduce taxes while continuing to address our many Infrastructure needs. Promises Made, Promises Kept.

At our last meeting, there were still questions being raised on the budget, regarding millage and financial data. While we had a long debate, we eventually set the tentative millage rate in a 5-0 vote. Last week, I had requested to conduct a sunshine meeting for the commission to hold a policy discussion on the items that were still being questioned. This would

Get Ready for King Tides

Unusually high tides, also known as King Tides, are expected periodically through mid-December. Flooding in lowlying areas is more likely during this time of the year due to the close proximity of the moon which creates King Tides. These seasonal high tides, combined with rising sea levels and inclement weather conditions, exacerbate flooding risks. Rainfall and wind strength and direction also have a significant impact on the height of the tides causing them to come in higher or lower than predicted. With seven miles of shoreline, 7.9 miles of canals, and a flat topography, Hollywood is vulnerable to the effects of sea level rise and tidal flooding.

Based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s tide predictions, above average high tides are expected:

• September 15 - 23

• October 3 - 5

• October 13 - 22

• October 30 - November 3

• November 12 - 19

• December 13 - 16

High seasonal tides can cause lowlying coastal areas to flood. Motorists are urged to use caution and seek

allow us to hopefully get to a clear and united policy going into the first hearing.

The one main issue raised was what more we could do to provide additional relief to our residents that are struggling. Thirty-one million in undesignated reserves is over the targeted amount of 16 percent of the over operating budget. The tax rate reduction to 7.5 did not use any reserves. The reduction was in the form of cuts to vacant staff positions and reductions in the cost of employee benefits and other adjustments. The tax rate reaction will provide relief as I shared with our readers last week. The issue became the proposed increase in the Fire Fee Rate.

The Fire Fee had not increased since 2018 when it was raised to $265 dollars per residential unit. This rate is a flat fee that is calculated with a formula. It takes into consideration the overall fire costs of providing services. They are calculated and 90 percent of the costs are allowed by state statute to be paid through the fee. The cost is distributed on a per foot basis and according to the type of property. Fire Fees are assessed and utilized to pay for services rather than having all the

costs budgeted into the General Fund. Our cost of Fire/EMS Services this year is twenty-three million dollars with thirteen million allocated to Fire. The only costs allowed are those that directly benefit from the protection of property. Costs within each fire class are then divided by unit counts which can be acres, residential dwelling units, or square footage. The city has typically assessed square footage for each one hundred.

The proposed rate could have been as high as $385 dollars per residential unit, but a lower rate was recommended at $347.98 per residential unit. This came to an $82.92 increase. This is a flat rate, so it is charged equally whether you own a $150,000 home or a million-dollar home. State law does not allow rates based on values.

This means that a homesteaded property at $150,000 may see a decrease in taxes but that tax relief is lost. It is not unrealized due to the Fire Fee increase.

Every city in Broward and unincorporated Broward County charges a Fire Fee. Fees vary from city to city, the highest being $758 dollars charged by Southwest Ranches to $190 dollars. The

major cost drivers for fire are personnel, building maintenance, equipment, training, and vehicle replacement. A fire truck alone can cost ten million dollars or more. Rather than have that cost in one year the recommendation was to spread it out over the course of 5 years. We debated the pros and cons of two alternatives. One was not increasing the fee but keeping the millage rate at 7.9 then 7.5. The other was to keep the 7.5 tax rate but reduce the proposed increase of eighty-two dollars. The consensus was to reduce the reduced rate. At these meetings, no formal decisions are made. They are a way for us to meet in the sunshine setting and have open discussion to reach consensus. The actual change will need to be calculated by our professional budget staff before our hearing on Thursday.

Overthrowing the Constitution

All Sides Are Waging War on Our Freedoms

It is both apt and ironic that the anniversary of 9/11, which paved the way for the government to overthrow the Constitution, occurs the week before the anniversary of the day the U.S. Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787. All sides are still waging war on our constitutional freedoms, and “we the people” remain the biggest losers.

This year’s presidential election is no exception.

As Bruce Fein, the former associate deputy attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, warns in a recent article in the Baltimore Sun, “In November, the American people will have a choice between Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance. But they will not have a choice between an Empire and a Republic.”

In other words, the candidates on this year’s ballot do not represent a substantive choice between freedom and tyranny so much as they constitute a cosmetic choice: the packaging may vary widely, but the contents remain the same.

No matter who wins, the bureaucratic minions of the Security/Military Industrial Complex and its Police State/Deep State partners will retain their stranglehold on power.

Neither Donald Trump nor Kamala Harris have the greatest of track records when it comes to actually respecting the rights enshrined in the Constitution, despite the rhetoric being trotted out by both sides lately regarding their so-called devotion to the rule of law.

Indeed, Trump has repeatedly called for parts of the Constitution to be terminated, while both Harris and Trump seem to view the First Amendment’s assurance of the right to free speech, political expression and protest as dangerous when used to challenge the government’s power.

This flies in the face of everything America’s founders fought to safeguard.

Those who gave us the Constitution

and the Bill of Rights believed that the government exists at the behest of its citizens. It is there to protect, defend and even enhance our freedoms, not violate them.

Unfortunately, although the Bill of Rights was adopted as a means of protecting the people against government tyranny, in America today, the government does whatever it wants, freedom be damned.

In the 23 years since the USA Patriot Act—a massive 342-page wish list of expanded powers for the FBI and CIA— was rammed through Congress in the wake of the so-called 9/11 terror attacks, it has snowballed into the eradication of every vital safeguard against government overreach, corruption and abuse.

The Patriot Act drove a stake through the heart of the Bill of Rights, violating at least six of the ten original amendments— the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Amendments—and possibly the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, as well. The Patriot Act also redefined terrorism so broadly that many non-terrorist political activities such as protest marches, demonstrations and civil disobedience are now considered potential terrorist acts, thereby rendering anyone desiring to engage in protected First Amendment expressive activities as suspects of the surveillance state.

In fact, since 9/11, we’ve been spied on by surveillance cameras, eavesdropped on by government agents, had our belongings searched, our phones tapped, our mail opened, our email monitored, our opinions questioned, our purchases scrutinized (under the USA Patriot Act, banks are required to analyze your transactions for any patterns that raise suspicion and to see if you are connected to any objectionable people), and our activities watched.

We’re also being subjected to invasive patdowns and whole-body scans of our persons and seizures of our electronic

devices in the nation’s airports. We can’t even purchase certain cold medicines at the pharmacy anymore without it being reported to the government and our names being placed on a watch list.

In this way, “we the people” continue to be terrorized, traumatized, and tricked into a semi-permanent state of compliance by a government that cares nothing for our lives or our liberties.

The bogeyman’s names and faces have changed over time (terrorism, the war on drugs, illegal immigration, a viral pandemic, and more to come), but the end result remains the same: in the socalled name of national security, the Constitution has been steadily chipped away at, undermined, eroded, whittled down, and generally discarded with the support of Congress, the White House, and the courts.

A recitation of the Bill of Rights—set against a backdrop of government surveillance, militarized police, SWAT team raids, asset forfeiture, eminent domain, overcriminalization, armed surveillance drones, whole body scanners, stop and frisk searches, vaccine mandates, lockdowns, and the like (all sanctioned by Congress, the White House, and the courts)—would understandably sound more like a eulogy to freedoms lost than an affirmation of rights we truly possess.

What we are left with today is but a shadow of the robust document adopted more than two centuries ago. Sadly, most of the damage has been inflicted upon the Bill of Rights.

If there is any sense to be made from a recitation of freedoms lost, it is simply this: our individual freedoms have been eviscerated so that the government’s powers could be expanded.

So what’s the solution?

It was no idle happenstance that the Constitution opens with these three powerful words: “We the people.”

In other words, it’s our job to make the government play by the rules of the

Constitution.

From the President on down, anyone taking public office should have a working knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and should be held accountable for upholding their precepts. One way to ensure this would be to require government leaders to take a course on the Constitution and pass a thorough examination thereof before being allowed to take office.

Some critics are advocating that students pass the United States citizenship exam in order to graduate from high school. Others recommend that it must be a prerequisite for attending college. I’d go so far as to argue that students should have to pass the citizenship exam before graduating from grade school.

Here’s an idea to get educated and take a stand for freedom: anyone who signs up to become a member of The Rutherford Institute gets a wallet-sized Bill of Rights card and a Know Your Rights card. Use this card to teach your children the freedoms found in the Bill of Rights. A healthy, representative government is hard work. It takes a citizenry that is informed about the issues, educated about how the government operates, and willing to do more than grouse and complain.

As I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, “we the people” have the power to make and break the government.
