Broward County Transit Launches Campaign To Increase Ridership

Broward County Transit (BCT) recently launched a campaign to encourage more residents and visitors to use public transportation as they travel to events and other exciting destinations this fall. The Just Try It campaign focuses on motivating nonriders, particularly eventgoers, to just try transit and use BCT to get to their favorite concerts, festivals, and community events.

“There is a lot to do in Broward County and people depend heavily on their vehicles to get there,” BCT CEO/General Manager Coree Cuff Lonergan explained. “In recognizing that reality, Broward County is preparing for a transformative transportation future to provide intermodal transit options to its residents. As it

continues to advance in this direction, the Just Try It campaign will introduce more people to the benefits of the BCT system and help them discover how public transportation can easily become a part their journey to experiences that resonate the most with them.”

Cuff Lonergan went on to explain that by positioning BCT as the journey to what excites a growing share of new passengers, eventgoers will begin to view the transit system as more than just a bus ride, but the experience that connects them to their passions.

Whether that passion is music in the park or an exciting sporting event, BCT can take eventgoers to where they want to go. In doing so, the Just Try It cam-

paign will demonstrate to first timers an easy, affordable and hassle-free alternative to traffic congestion, long wait times, and high event parking fees.

BCT transports tens of thousands of passengers daily. It operates 36 fixed bus routes across Broward County, offering seven-day-a-week service to major event hubs. Passengers can plan their trips, access realtime bus tracking, obtain route updates, view schedules and more by visiting Broward.org/ BCT or contacting customer service at 954-357-8400.

A recent study by: www. MarketBeat.com reveals that the retiree side hustle economy is flourishing, with an estimated national value of around $6 Billion. Based on surveys of 3,000 respondents and analysis of publicly available data, the findings highlight that retirees engaged in side hustles earn an average of $379 per month. This additional income can significantly impact their financial stability and quality of life.

$5.3 Billion. This figure underscores the financial significance of these activities, as many retirees find creative ways to boost their earnings.

The motivations behind this side hustle trend are multifaceted. According to: www.MarketBeat.com’s study, the top reasons retirees pursue side gigs include:

• Supplementing retirement income: 47%

• Staying mentally engaged and active: 34%

• Pursuing a passion or hobby: 10%

• Building social connections: 9%

These motivations reveal a blend of practical needs and personal aspirations, showcasing that side hustles are about more than just financial gain. For many, they represent a chance to maintain an active lifestyle and explore new interests.

Types of Side Hustles

Retirees engage in a variety of side hustles, with the majority (32%) launching their own small businesses. This entrepreneurial spirit reflects a desire for autonomy and creativity in their post-retirement lives. Other popular side gigs include:

• Crafting and selling homemade goods: 30%

• Trading or investing: 22%

These diverse activities demonstrate that retirees are leveraging their skills, creativity, and experiences to generate income, whether through crafts, investment strategies, or freelance work.

On average, retirees dedicate about 10 hours and 24 minutes per week to their side hustles. This time investment reflects a commitment to both personal growth and financial health. The flexibility of side hustles allows retirees to choose how much time they want to dedicate, fitting their work around their desired lifestyle.

When asked about the most rewarding aspects of their side hustles, respondents highlighted several key benefits:

• Additional income: 34%

• Sense of purpose and fulfillment: 29%

• Mental stimulation and engagement: 21%

• Flexibility and freedom: 10%

• Social connections and community: 6%

The emphasis on financial gain is clear, but equally important are the emotional and psychological benefits. A sense of purpose and engagement plays a crucial role in maintaining Overall Well-Being.

Perhaps most compelling is that an overwhelming 76% of respondents reported that their side hustles bring them happiness. This statistic emphasizes the positive impact of these activities on retir-

ees’ lives. Furthermore, 19% of retirees are so inspired by their side hustles that they are considering transitioning them into full-time businesses. This ambition showcases a shift in the perception of retirement; it is no longer solely about relaxation, but also about innovation and entrepreneurship.

As the landscape of retirement evolves, the side hustle trend among seniors is likely to continue growing. Matt Paulson, the Founder of www.MarketBeat.com, captures this sentiment perfectly: “The retiree side hustle trend is a testament to the evolving landscape of retirement. It’s no longer just about leisure; it’s often driven by the need for financial security, along with a desire for purpose and fulfillment.” Technology plays a pivotal role in facilitating this side hustle economy. Many retirees are utilizing online platforms to sell products, offer services, or connect with clients. E-commerce Websites, freelance platforms, and Social Media channels have made it easier than ever for retirees to reach broader audiences and market their skills.

Additionally, side hustles often foster social connections, creating a sense of community among retirees. Whether it’s through local craft fairs, online forums, or networking events, these activities provide opportunities to meet new people, share experiences, and build friendships. This social engagement is particularly valuable, as studies have shown that maintaining

social connections can significantly enhance Mental Health and Overall WellBeing.

While the benefits are plentiful, retirees pursuing side hustles also face unique challenges. Navigating technology can be daunting for some, and the competitive landscape of small businesses may require additional skills in marketing and finance. Furthermore, managing time effectively between personal commitments and side hustles can be a balancing act.

The rise of the side hustle among Florida’s retirees is a remarkable phenomenon, reflecting a broader shift in how society views aging and retirement. With an estimated side hustle economy worth $5.3 Billion, seniors are redefining what it means to age gracefully. Through entrepreneurial endeavors, retirees are not only enhancing their financial stability but also finding purpose, fulfillment, and joy in their golden years.

As this trend continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how the retiree side hustle economy shapes the future of retirement. The narrative is changing — retirement is no longer synonymous with rest; it’s about exploration, innovation, and continued contribution. Whether it’s through launching a small business, crafting unique goods, or providing freelance services, retirees are proving that their golden years can be just as productive and rewarding as any other stage of life.

Condos Are Facing Major Assessments

Many Seniors on Fixed Incomes Simply Cannot Afford It

Last Thursday, Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub, Senator Jason Pizzo and I had the honor to attend a town hall that was hosted by the Hemispheres. Over the past months the Board of Directors have been working to address many building issues. The main concern was a 56-million-dollar assessment that was passed while they are still paying off a 32.5-million-dollar assessment for 2019.

Their challenges are the same that are being faced by the boards throughout our state. Deferred maintenance, 40 Year and 50-Year Building Safety Inspections 200 percent plus insurance increases, Structural Inspections Reserves Studies (SIRS), Emergency Life Safety System requirements (ELSS) and rising cost of running condominiums in general have threatened the ability of many seniors and individuals on fixed income to stay in their homes.

During the meeting, I had a chance to explain our budget and the projects that are underway. I shared the news that we have lowered the tax rate to roll back and while addressing many Infrastructure and other vital services. The most important discussion was about what role the City plays when it comes to Building Safety, ELSS and implementing the new Condominium Laws.

I made it clear our City has no control over private Condominium Boards. They are regulated by The State Department of Business and Professional Regulations. Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub championed the Condo Transparency Law here in the City which I was proud to cosponsor and that became a blueprint for the state. We do require Condominiums to file certain documents with the City to be placed on our website.

event of a Safety Report comes in with “Eminent Failure” has the authority to Red Tag a part or all of a building if the board does not take immediate action! This has only happened once in the City. It was found that a garage’s supporting beams were failing. The board immediately shored up the garage structure which allowed residents to remain safely in the building.

If the building does not address NOVs they can be taken to the Special Magistrate. The Magistrate will rule on the case and either give time to cure or issue a final order. Final orders can be heard as continuance so long as the building has filed for Permits and if moving forward addressing the issue. Our Code Enforcement is a tool for compliance not meant to be punitive. Many residents do

While completion of the old projects is underway the condominium is now faced with a 300% increase in insurance, additional cost of six million plus for pool, the SIRS and ELSS. This is what led to the 56-million-dollar price tag. It is an understatement to say residents were so alarmed they filed a petition to stop the assessment and reached out for help from the City and Senator Pizzo.

Our Fire Marshall clarified the ELSS does have to be acted on due to State Law. Many condominiums have continued putting off installing Fire Sprinklers for years, thinking that the mandate would be removed. That is not the case. The programs require that buildings begin to evaluate what their plan will include, get bids, and start the process of filing Permits. These are steps that must be

raised about the assessment, lack of access to information when the assessment was proposed and passed, what items truly need to be SIRS and the timing of the ELSS. The meeting lasted over 4 hours, so this is a very abridged version. If the assessment was passed and approved then payments begin October 1st.

There was a commitment to make sure that the Board would post and make sure all of the information asked for was sent out and posted. The new State Law has made it clear that nonresponse to records requests can be a Misdemeanor and the Second Violation will be a Felony. Another issue was that meetings on zoom did not allow participation. The Senator made sure it was clear that the board meetings must be conducted properly according to

The law helps residents and owners to have more access to records but there is limited control other than a fine if it is not submitted. Our Police Department does have the ability if there is “proof” of Financial Crime to investigate. Proof means Actual Records, Receipts and Bank Information. It does not mean speculation, hearsay, or a question of impropriety.

What the city is responsible for is making sure all of the Building and Fire Safety Requirements are met. 40 and 50 Year Building Inspections MUST be performed, and all Fire Systems are implemented. If these items are not performed the City can issue Notice of Violations! Our Building Official in the

mation

not understand that it is not an immediate process. The process can take months or more depending on the type of work that needs to be performed.

This was the case with the Hemispheres. In 2019 there was a final order for Multiple Violations including: Structural, Painting, Seawalls, Parking Lots, Roofs, and Common Walls. Since 2019 the old board has been working on many of these issues. The COVID-19 Pandemic hit in 2020, so many projects took much longer and grew in scope. Prices change as well. Most of the projects have been completed. There were major overruns on a pool project that resulted in 6.00 plus more in costs.

taken that result in building out by 2026.

Vice Mayor Lima-Taub announced that she and I will be cosponsoring a resolution to request that Broward County create a Condominium Relief Fund like Dade County. The goal is to at a minimum help those seniors on Fixed Income that simply cannot afford the assessment. Residents’ that attended the meeting hoped that the assessment would be postponed. A petition is being circulated please visit Vice Mayor Lima-Taub’s Facebook page. I will be sending out the link via email. Sign up at: www.mayorjoycooper.com

Senator Pizzo then took the floor to go step by step with the many questions

State Laws. He also made a commitment he would spend time with the manager and board to review the list of projects. I will follow up on that meeting. It is critical that all boards understand the SIRS and what changes were made in 2022. I requested that he share a summary on white paper so I can make sure it is published and shared.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas to make our city a better place. I’m reachable at the office: (954) 457-1318. Mobile/Text: (954) 632-5700. Or visit my website at: www.MayorJoyCooper.com. Working for you! Always have! Always will!
