deaths-and compared to the infamous attack more than a generation earlier on US soil. The City of Hallandale Beach was to put on An Evening of Remembrance honoring the victims and survivors of the massacre of innocent civilians including women and, especially, children last year. The event was rescheduled for a week later, October 14, to occur at the Hallandale Community Center due to hurricanes.

It went off smoothly as Hallandale Police Department ensured safety as an estimated 150 to 200 persons attended the event that started shortly after 7 p.m. and ended about 2 hours later. The event commemorated the staunch resilience of the people of Israel to survive the unprovoked violence that occurred on October 7, 2023-truly a “day of infamy” like Pearl Harbor-and the continued aftermath involving the relentless shelling of Israeli cities by missiles of terrorists, Hamas, Hezbollah and other proxies of Iran.

In particular, the event highlighted paintings of 80 Israeli children ages 8, 9

from smiley faces to rainbows to scenes of a city besieged by missile attacks. Through paintings as therapy, kids expressed their feelings. “Alongside great pain there was always room for hope,” a pamphlet noted.

An Evening of Remembrance was the brainchild of Hallandale Vice-Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub who had been born in Israel and is fluent in Hebrew. Many from the audience seemed familiar with a prayer and comprehended the Hebrew language. Doctor Gershon Fink was a special honoree who spoke a prayer asking for the safe release of the hostages.

Doctor Gershon Fink is, in fact, a medical Doctor, according to Mayor Cooper.

The event took place October 14, 2024. It had been pushed back from a week before-October 7, the anniversary date of the terrorist attack due to Hurricane Helene.

Of the Hallandale City Commission, Vice-Mayor Lima-Taub took hold of the verbal reins as moderator, often preferring to ignore a pre-written speech to speak

Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper and Commissioner Michele Lazarow.

Last March Anabelle Lima-Taub, and Commissioner Michele Lazarow personally had visited the now “Sister City” of Sderot, even staying at burnt-out homes of victims in a virtual “little ghost town” and braving the elements amid nearby missile attacks.

During their visit they presented this city with a key to the City of Hallandale Beach. Lima-Taub read a letter from the Vice-Mayor of Sderot which ended, “long live Israel. Together we shall win!”

Anabelle mentioned how proud and amazed she was at seeing Commissioner Lazarow standing courageously against imminent danger. At the Remembrance, Commissioner Lazarow advised people to “be smart” and remain safe by avoiding dangerous confrontation while expressing their solidarity for Israel.

Honored was Florida State Senator Jason Pizzo who was awarded for his steadfast diligence in support of the Jewish State. Mayor Cooper declared October 7 to be Senator Pizzo Day. She

expanded that time frame to October 14,

Senator Pizzo referred to himself as “An Italian Irish kid from New Jersey who was blessed to have a Jewish godfather.” He began by saying, “There is no generation where people have… had to hide who they are, where they are or what they are. This has never happened for another race, religion, culture or ethnicity...”

Senator Pizzo asked kids under 18 at the event to raise their hands. To the four youngsters who did so, he said, “My hope and my dream is that yours is the first generation that when you become adults, and you become parents that you carry one thing that the last generation had not been able to do-be absolutely proud and loud about who you are, where you are anywhere in this world.” He noted the significance that of the world’s 189 sovereign nations, that only one is a democratic Jewish State.

Also honored was Ernesto Ackerman, President of Independent Venezuelan American Citizens. He is the son of a Holocaust survivor who passed away in 2022 just before her 100th birthday.

Mr. Ackerman is not immune to the threat of enemy fire. As a five-year old in 1956, he was en route to visit uncles and was unaware– as then there was no internet-- of imminent danger. “Just as the ship set sail, we saw the entire city of Haifa go dark. All the lights went out and we saw Mount Carmel disappear before our eyes,” he recalled. Like others present this evening, he noted the increasing antipathy toward Israel. “And now, the attention shifts away from the atrocity as if Israel should be blamed for protecting its people from such horrors from happening again. Emotively, he continued, “We must never forget, we must continue the fight for justice for our people, for erev (land of) Israel, and may the light of those we love/lost never be extinguished.”

Lima-Taub corroborated this thought citing an example of courage where in 1982 Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin stood up to a US Senator, decrying, “I am not a Jew with trembling knees.” He and Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt was awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.

A poignant video was shown of Siberian-born Tzippy Holland, educator and founder of Bridge of Love. Born in Siberia in 1940, she’d experienced the

Holocaust. In the video, she implored the audience to stay vigilant as to the escalating Antisemitism happening worldwide, including at US universities.

“I know what is happening. The whole world thinks that it’s only happening in Israel. It’s not. Antisemitism is growing all over the world. And, in America...in all the universities in the cities, when you wake up in the morning, you can see the clouds of Antisemitism.” -- Holocaust survivor, educator,Tzippy Holland

“In all the universities in the cities, when you wake up in the morning, you can see the clouds of Antisemitism.” -Holocaust survivor, educator, Tzippy Holland.

Ms. Holland continued with stark emotion, likely sending chills and tears to those present and surely to this newspaper reporter.

“Look at the drawings of these little kids. That instead of drawing flowers and beautiful scenery, they are drawing death. They are drawing unbelievable pain. I wish for them to be happy and healthy and to be able to get up in the morning and smile and dance and draw beautiful pictures.” -Tzippy Holland

Vice-Mayor Lima-Taub offered her opinion as to the roots of Antisemitism. “What is the core that bothers people so much about ‘pesky’ Jews?” she asked. “Jealousy,” a man from the audience blurted out. Lima-Taub noted that indeed, Jews are hated because of their “success.” It seems noteworthy that as about 15 million people of Jewish descent occupy the earth, it seems a

disproportionate number have excelled in many endeavors, including Art and Science. She also noted to be alert to the term, “Zionist,” which has the connotation of “dirty Jew.”

Toward the conclusion, many people were recognized for their outstanding contribution to organizing the event and supporting Israel. Mayor Cooper thanked the legion of non-Jewish folks who are good Samaritans, who helped with the event and supported Israel. She thanks the Hallandale Beach Police Department which she lauded as stalwarts for ensuring Safety for the local Jewish population.

A line of more than a dozen honored folks were welcomed onstage to copious applause from appreciative attendees.

Capping off the evening was a performance by the Miami Ensemble Israeli Music Band.

Moderator Lima-Taub effectively encapsulated the evening’s premise as she said to the audience, “You come from a lineage of hundreds and thousands of years of survivors. This is the time to stand up. This is the time not to be quiet. This is not the time to be polite. We tried everything. Now is the time for us to stand up and speak up.”

Oh, a final thought by Tzippy Holland and then by John Lennon:

“I still believe that we have a lot of good people around and the world is still good. And, that we can still change all this hate. Everybody should love everybody.”

John Lennon famously sang, “All You Need Is Love.”

Moderator Lima-Taub said of Florida Senator Jason Pizzo: “I have been great witness to his tremendous altruism and support in many ways to the Jewish community of South Florida.”

Mayor Cooper expressed the relationship between terror attacks and the efforts of Florida State Senator Pizzo supplied to tend to their needs.

“Whereas of October 27, 2023, Hamas, the designated terrorist organization, launched an unprovoked attack on the State of Israel, causing great loss of life, displacement and terror among the Israeli citizenship, whereas the Jewish community in Florida was directly home to many families and deep connections in Israel was directly affected by this tragic event...

... “Senator Jason Pizzo has shown unwavering support for families of hostages affected by this brutal attack, standing in solidarity with them during their time of distress, offering critical emotion and logistic support and whereas Senator Pizzo’s benevolence and advocacy was extended to the Jewish families in Florida, many who have found themselves in urgent need.”

“In his dedication to the Jewish community as well as his steadfast commitment to promoting peace, safety and justice for all has been exemplary, setting standards for compassion and leadership in times of crisis.”

Also, Orit Feigelman the Chair Person of “Reut Women” read a prayer to the audience which was received warmly.

Josu de Solaun Comes To South Florida

One Of The Most Impressive Discoveries Of The Past Decade & Other Talents This November

Josu De Solaun has garnered recognition from critics like Nikolaus Frey (Fuldaer Zeitung) for his “poetic sense of sound, bold artistic vision and brilliant virtuoso skills, always and totally at the service of the works he performs.” He’s a two-time awardee of the prestigious International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) in 2021 for chamber music and in 2023 as the best soloist.

In the 2023 edition, the ICMA jury expressed: “Josu de Solaun is one of the most impressive discoveries of the past decade. Not only is he a technically impressive Pianist, but his interpretative imagination also knows no limits. His interpretations ideally reflect de Solaun’s ability to engage with works symbiotically and at the highest energy levels. Free of aesthetic dogmas, the pianist creates cosmoses of a solitary nature.”

He is also the sole Spanish Pianist to win first prizes at the José Iturbi (2006) and George Enescu (2014) International Piano Competitions since their inception in 1980 and 1958, respectively. Esteemed pianists like Elisabeth Leonskaja (1964) and Radu Lupu (1967) have previously won the Enescu Competition.

In 2019, President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis appointed him Officer of the Order of the Cultural Merit of the Republic of Romania, acknowledging his artistic work and promotion of George Enescu’s music—whose complete works for piano he recorded under the NAXOS label—and Romanian musical culture globally.

Josu, trained by Salvador Chuliá and Pianists María Teresa Naranjo and Ana Guijarro in Spain, later studied in New York under Pianists Nina Svetlanova and Horacio Gutiérrez, enabling him to exhibit his musical artistry in various forms. Justo Romero in Scherzo declared: “It is difficult to imagine a more powerful and creative pianism. de Solaun is one of

the most interesting virtuosos of the contemporary keyboard. Spanish and nonSpanish. A vigorous, wise pianism, of refined workmanship and great musicality. We are before a true colossus of the piano, a true virtuoso, in the old style, who makes use of his resplendent technique and the extroverted dramatic, his strong artistic nature to conjugate versions that combine brilliance and effusiveness, fire and delicacy, always with an intense pianistic foundation, all with naturalness, strength, power, sonorous opulence and intense expressive sense.”

Making Strides Walkathon

- A sea of 25,000 people, many clad in pink, converged at an arena in Sunrise, Florida, recently to celebrate the Making Strides walkathon, a tradition in Florida and across the country to help thwart the deadly disease, Breast Cancer.

Presented by Seminole Hard Rock, the event took place on a crisp, drizzly morning at the Amerant Bank Arena, home of the 2023 Stanley Cup champion ice hockey team, the Florida Panthers. The event ran concurrently with the Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk in Hialeah, Florida, according to CBS News Miami where more than 6,000 people attended. The goal for fundraising was to raise $1,000,000 and $700,000, respectively. To date, more than $500,000 was raised in Hialeah, Florida.

Making Strides began shortly after 8 a.m. with a vibrant rendition of our National Anthem sung by a local music sensation.” Whereby many in the audience held their hands over their hearts. The emcees were Channel Seven’s Meteorologist Vivian Gonzales and Hard Rock Classic Casino General Manager Edward Aguilar who thanked all participants and organizers as well as supplied facts pertaining to Breast Cancer.

Representatives from the medical field included The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Miller Branch at University of Miami, the Cleveland Clinic and Hollywood Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Aguilar took to the microphone, “Together, while we have no cure yet, we have a lot of hope, and we have an unconquered spirit to continue the fight with you. Today would not be possible without all the help of the volunteers today and all the amazing organizations.”

Here are pertinent facts: About 42,000 women in the United States die each year of Breast Cancer. It affects one in eight U.S. women. It’s estimated that more than 160,000 cases of Cancer are diagnosed in Florida alone, and that Breast Cancer is the number one form of Cancer

Together We Can Help Fund the Future of Breast Cancer Research

of Native Americans, according to Mr. Aguilar.

It is estimated that more than 23,000 in Florida alone will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year, of which 3,000 will die.

Breast Cancer is rare in men, accounting for about 1% of all Breast Cancer diagnoses. In the United States, about 2,650 men are diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year. Breast Cancer deaths have declined 40% in the past few decades.

2024 marks the 26th Annual Walkathon in Broward County, this year’s Making Strides of Broward County was presented by: Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood, Seminole Classic Casino, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, along with other sponsors. This is the 12th year Seminole Hard Rock has participated in the Broward Making Strides event. On this 2024 walk they presented a grandiose check—literally, a four-foot-long check--on stage for a grand sum, $100,000. Hard Rock venues present were Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Seminole Classic Casino, and Coconut Creek Seminole Casino.

Several companies and teams were thanked for generous donations. Teams that raise $2,500 or more, collectively, become members of the Pacesetters Team Club. Individuals who raise $1,000 or more are Grand Club members.

“We Believe that no people should have to fight Breast Cancer alone.” -- American Cancer Society

The Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito said, “Today is a day of fight, of commemorating the survivors and is also a day of thanks,” adding that his wife is a Cancer survivor. He extended a thank you to doctors, nurses, caregivers, family members and “to survivors for inspiring us.” Mr. Zito sashayed a bit, modeling a custom-made jersey which is to be auctioned off to raise funds for ACS.

Susan Kesmodel, M.D., of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center noted, “We are seeing a de-escalation of surgery for Breast Cancer. In many women with early-stage Breast Cancer, mastectomy is not necessary. She added:

• Surgeons increasingly look for options besides Mastectomy for Breast Cancer.

• Breast Cancer surgery is not one-size-fits-all but is increasingly tailored to the patient based on extent of the disease and tumor characteristics.

• Cosmetic surgery has improved dramatically.Women can now receive Breast Reconstruction during Cancer surgery with Lumpectomy (removal of BreastTissue) or Mastectomy (removal of entire Breast(s).

--Susan Kesmodel, M.D., is Director of Breast Surgery Oncology at Sylvester and co-leader of the Breast Site Disease Group.

Mentioned Jose M. Net, M.D., “Routine Mammographic Screening is the best way to minimize your chance of dying of Breast Cancer. Early detection can help find tumors that are smaller, haven’t spread outside the breast and are easier to treat.” He added:

• Patients need to know their breast density, one indicator of increased Cancer risk. The FDA now requires that patients receive this information. Sylvester has provided it for 13 years.

--Dr. Jose Net is the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Director of Division of Breast Imaging at Sylvester.

Lluis Morey, Ph.D., member of Sylvester’s Epigenetics Program and Associate Professor at the Human Genetics Department at University of Miami noted:

• Of a handful of Breast Cancer variants, most are not aggressive and have a 90% survival rate due to treatment. Early detection is key.

• Understanding stem cells is important because if you identify and kill them, you might stop a tumor from growing.

Are You Always Tired?

Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!

It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea

What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?

When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.

Can This Condition Be Treated? How?

There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. (BPT) - Did you know Puerto Rico celebrates one of the longest holiday seasons in the world? The holiday season lasts about 45 days, from Thanksgiving Day through mid-January.

During the holiday season, the Island is alive with colorful decorations, delicious food, authentic music and grand festivals to mark different points of the season.

If you want to have a truly magical holiday experience this year, check out these six reasons why you should consider visiting Puerto Rico this winter.

1. Festivities

Get ready to experience the party that never stops. During the extended holiday season, you can participate in several vibrant festivities, including multi day events. Puerto Ricans begin decorating for the holidays right after Thanksgiving, if not sooner, and leave the décor on display well into January.

You’re probably used to Christmas Day being the most important day of the holiday season, but in Puerto Rico, nothing is more important than Nochebuena, or Christmas Eve. On Nochebuena, family and friends have dinner, exchange gifts, go out on parrandas and maybe even attend a midnight mass.

On December 31st, ring in the New Year at a Víspera de Año Nuevo celebration. At midnight, Puerto Ricans celebrate

the arrival of the new year with fireworks over an ocean view under the moon and starlight.

Christmas Eve isn’t the only time to exchange gifts. In January, Puerto Ricans celebrate Three Kings Day, which commemorates the Three Wise Men’s visit after Jesus was born. Across the Island, you’ll see parades with people dressed like the Three Wise Men handing out presents to children. Kids also gather grass or hay in shoeboxes and place them under beds for the Three Wise Men’s animals in exchange for presents.

Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián or SanSe - the largest and most popular festival in Puerto Rico - officially closes the holiday season. The party ends in Old San Juan with a lively street festival with music, dancing, traditional food and artisanal crafts.

2. Food

One of the best ways to explore a culture is through authentic dishes, and there’s no better season to savor authentic Boricua cuisine than the holidays. Get ready to indulge in Arroz Con Gandules, Rice with Pigeon Peas, Lechón Asado, Spit-Roasted Pork, Pasteles, Tamal-like patties of Green Banana and Meat and other flavorful dishes.

No holiday is complete without a signature drink. Eggnog may come to mind, but in Puerto Rico, locals drink Coquito.

This thick, creamy holiday beverage is made of Coconut Milk, Sweetened Condensed Milk, Evaporated Milk, local Rum and Spices.

3. Music

Merry music and musical traditions are key elements of the holidays in Puerto Rico.Throughout the whole season, you’ll witness parrandas, the Boricua version of caroling. Small groups visit friends and family late at night and wake them with aguinaldos, villancicos and trovas - local folk versions of Christmas songs. As the parranderos visit homes, they’ll sing, eat, drink and spread holiday cheer all over the Island until sunrise.

4. Weather

Ready to escape the cold winter weather? Take advantage of Puerto Rico’s warm weather this holiday season! In Puerto Rico, you can enjoy a sunny festive season, with an average temperature of 70-85 degrees F from November-January.

The warm weather also means you can enjoy outdoor activities like swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and hiking in a temperate, tropical climate. So, shed your layers and trade snow for sand and chilly winds for a gentle ocean breeze.

5. Accessibility

No passport? No problem! American citizens and permanent residents can visit

the Island with just a valid ID to enter Puerto Rico.

You won’t have any difficulty finding flights to the Heart and Soul of the Caribbean. There are several short, convenient flights from the U.S. mainland to the heart of Puerto Rico, including direct routes from major cities like New York, Chicago and Dallas.

If you haven’t brushed up on your Spanish, you’re in luck because the two official languages on the Island are English and Spanish. Also, you won’t need to worry about exchanging currency. Puerto Rico uses the U.S. Dollar, so you’ll have no problem buying last-minute Christmas gifts and souvenirs.

6. Live Boricua

Boricua - the Puerto Rican identity - is more than just a name. It’s a state of mind. When you Live Boricua, you can immerse yourself in the joy of life that is at the center of Puerto Rico and shared by its people and all who visit. During your holiday trip, embrace the rich traditions, warm hospitality and festive atmosphere of the Island so you can create memories to last a lifetime.

The exhibition brings together photographs and paintings of Florida by two artists of different generations who have sought to understand its complexity and contradictions.

Samoylova relocated to Miami in 2016 where she has focused on documenting environmental threats facing flood-risked communities. This led to her first major monograph, FloodZone. Her ongoing “Florida’s” project presents a multifaceted portrait of the state’s cultural and political identity, while her Image Cities series explores urban landscapes worldwide. Samoylova’s recent accolades include a shortlist nomination for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation prize as well as prestigious awards such as the Ellies Creator Award. Her works are held in renowned collections, including those of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Pérez Art Museum Miami. For more information about Anastasia Samoylova,
